My wife and I went on our first date and heard the Cedar Walton Trio at the Four Queens in Las Vegas. It was July 1985 and we've been together ever since. So nice to see you remembering your father here. He was an awesome musician. The NPR Monday Night Jazz series was broadcasting that night. We heard Freddie at the Four Queens on another occasion. Great place to hear jazz.
Was at this show at the Vanguard ...Won tickets From WBGO and taped the first set and they made this video of the 2nd so got to see both sets. One live , one video..It was burnin'..!!!!
This footage is what reminds me whats great about humanity and the god given ability to create something beautiful that speaks to the soul. Cedar Walton and Freddie Hubbard are always Jazz Masters in my book. I'm glad to see this footage is not lost in antiquity. When I want to feel upbeat I watch footage such as this. Thanks for sharing this great footage.
He is Great Pianist, I'm Fan !!! I agree with you ! This footage makes me happy ! Specialy Cedar's Piano solo !!! You have great Father !!!! Thank you so much for your message & Thanks ! Your Father Great Cedar Walton !!!!!
Freddie can blow some of that straight ahead jazz. I had an opportunity to see him at Concerts by the Sea in Redondo Beach, CA. One of my favorite songs by Freddie is "First Light", one of his biggest hits.
Bop at its best. The only music that I can think of that musicians do that sort of thing often. Parker was the master of that, because he knew all of the popular tunes of the times. It's awesome how the greats just grab those licks out of the air in the middle of a solo and make it blend so well. I can't believe that I didn't notice that one. I think Freddie surprised himself on that one by his expression. hehe
Thanks for your reply and I appreciate the kind words. His solos take me to an undescribable place most of the time. So fresh, simple sounding yet complex. But it all seems to come together. Freddys 1st wife Brenda is my godmother. Take it easy.
It's too easy :) I remember that The Live was played at X'mas season in 1982. Freddie blrw Santa-Claus, & Cedar sketched X'mas in NY by 88 keys perfectly ! Thanks !!
I was there a couple times that week - it was the middle of the summer and hot as hell in NYC. Thats why we all cracked up when a quote from Santa Claus is Coming to Town slipped out during Freddie's solo. Christmas was an eternity away it was 95 degrees!!!
When people talk abou 0:02 t who the greatest jazz trumpet player was I have always said Freddie Hubbard. Miles couldn't cut a candle to him and before Miles there was Lee Morgan too.
@@rhythmfield Everybody knows Freddie Hubbard was a better trumpeter than Miles. That's not a knock-on miles. Miles was great for other reasons. Lee Morgan was better...Clifford Brown was better, etc.

Yes, its Fantasy in D aka Ugetsu. Love seeing Cedar work the keys. I also can't get this out of my head. Several versions on RUclips. Thanx to posters.
One of my allll timmme faves composed by my daddy Cedar A Walton Jr.
Seen him playing at Ronnie Scott's numerous times, fantastic and a great inspiration!
Explosively joyful! ... Props to your dad ...
His Rhodes work on those Muse recordings were so tasteful and smooth!

It's truely a blessing... to be able to listen to this past's beautiful moment, 7000 miles away from there and 40 years later
One of the most versatile horns of the last 50 years. R.I.P. Freddie.
I can't stop listening to this song! I'm addicted to the chords; such beauty and color.
todd merriss me too!! I listen at least 5x a month or more...
That's a great feeling seeing a well knit organised band going for it , what jazz is all about!
the whole ugetsu record from the jazz messengers is insane check it out
Be sure to listen to the original version with Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Reggie Workman in addition to Freddie and Cedar. It's just stunning!
Beautiful tune.
Cedar! Freddie Ron and Lenny---one of the best aggregations Freddie ever had!

Hadn’t heard this great gem in awhile, from one of my fav groups!
I am wild for this group!!!!!!
One of the heaviest bands EVER. And that tune!

Es war sehr wunderbar !
Ganz Phantastisch Spieler und Musik.

Thank you and his sound is etched in my inner most fiber of my soul. Thanks for listening
Oh Yeah!!! The is Ugetsu from the 1962 album by Blakey! Ugetsu means "Fantasy" in Japanese. Great composition.
@Ewerb7 ...1963.
Makes me very happy.
Anyone notice Freddie's quote from santa claus is coing to town at 4:07?? Hahaha
Paul Bailey then freddie goes "HAHAHAHAHAH!!!"
Paul Bailey then Walton drops a monk quote " well you needn't "
Geoff Bournes true! 4:45
I like how he surprises himself
At the end at 8:53 he kinda sorta quotes “The Night has A Thousand Eyes”
It's just wonderfull, but is that me or the musicians are litterally melting? x)
Your high on Hubbard.

Hi ! Welcome back again !! :))

Anyone know what happened to that live recording of Freddie playing Skydive? I can't find it on RUclips anymore.
Look up jazzfest berlin 1985. He plays it in that concert with kenny garrett on flute. Then dizzy and woody come on stage

I love this tune and this is a good version of it but it would have been even better with Billy Higgins on drums.
+vova47 ...It wouldn't have mattered.
Lenny sounds amazing on this clip!
vova47 It would be different......what does “better” even mean in this context?
@@brucescott4261 Yes it would matter a hell of a lot!
