After listening to the other recording of Bartley on this chart so many times it’s great to see him take a new solo on it. It gives the listener so much insight into what Bartley’s improvisation process actually is, what stuff stays consistent throughout his performances, what chord tones or extensions he leans to melodically, etc. Can’t get enough of these guys.
Also it goes without saying that Patrick B is blowing the lid off of the joint every time he lays it down. Every time I see his name I get excited because I know he’s going to lay something beautifully melodic, incredibly phrased, and most importantly straight from the heart. This dude is amazing!
Interesting to hear this perspective. To offer a different view, my interpretation is that Patrick delivered this solo as a "call-back" to his viral solo in the living room session. Many of the familiar phrases are the same harmonically as you stated, but the beautify in it to me is that he intentionally placed those phrases with incredible grace and artistic skill, while varying the rhythmic devices and different shape approaches in a way to make it completely unique while telling a similar story to his prior solo. So much so that I bet he could play his original solo note for note at this moment. Simultaneously he has such massive vocabulary that he could play 10 chorus' without repeating a phrase. Of course this is just my opinion and I could be completely wrong. Either way, we can both agree that Patrick Bartley demonstrates complete virtuosity over musical self-expression, the saxophone, and artistic delivery! Cheers!
@@altariabeats You shoudl check out Pat's J-Music Ensemble material/TwitchTV streams - I was struck by his amazing musicianship the first time I saw his stream (followed him for a couple of years now). The facility and musicality improvising over VGM (of all things) with each note having a life of its own and infused with groove. He's also brilliant on soprano (I often find too screechy) - highly listenable. I found Pat via The Consouls who also turn VGM into great jazz and for the last few years I have just enjoyed the vast VGM repertoire but Pat brought me to Emmet which then brought me back to straight-ahead jazz which I had not listened to for some time. Just loving this jazz universe!
Check out his own channel! I found him through my love of video game covers! I found Cohen separately. Then imagine the pure joy I felt when these two virtuosos just fell together. Cohen even has a video game cover on his channel! Ultimately this helped show me that jazz is a confluence of what we love, what we hear, who we know, and whom we love!
@@lamediamond4172The tune's called "After you've gone" and i'm assuming its about being sad after losing your girl and Patrick absolutely killed it on his solo so by killing it, it almost makes it like he's happy that the girl left
The original's lyrics have the vibe of "after you've gone, you'll regret it," while the musical vibe even then was almost more "after you've gone, I'll be partying." Here's a link to the original recording from 1918 sung by Marion Harris if you guys are interested ruclips.net/video/VW33oH_EkW4/видео.htmlsi=h8XnNH6QgIkkDGWU. Fun fact: some people claim that was the very first jazz recording, although there's plenty of other contenders for that title.
No words to adequately describe Emmet’s solo .. I think the piano 🎹 was smoking 🔥 lol.. musical genius beyond belief, and he appears to be having so much fun while playing at this superhuman level.. Patrick, Kyle and Yasushi killed it as well
OH COME ON PEOPLE! Really? I’m lookin at you out in the audience during Patrick’s solo….and y’all just sittin’ there, some looking bored! Ah man, if that don’t get you up on your feet your hearse is ready. And then there’s Emmet’s blowing - just insane, wow…….
Look Patrick Bartley's solo was out of this world on the last recording at Emmets place and not to say this solo was any worse, however Emmet was on something this performance. The stride playing combined with some of the most lyrical lines delivered all while by himself sounded beyond unbelievable. Emmet sounded like he was being possessed by a collective of his influences and idols and I couldn't imagine a better solo, Well done guys!
Holy smokes that was fabulous! EC really took us on a journey building that piano solo, from a playfully teasing start to a roaring finish. And every note Patrick plays is clean & defined, with a marvelous sense of melodic swing to it. What a great quartet!
I love how Patrick ends his solo in a very similar fashion to how he ended it from the performance and Emmett’s apartment. Ties is back to the other performance nicely.
I don't disagree but it's not just young people missing out, it's a whole population. Also, I'm not knocking any art forms but I'm staggered that these players make nothing near the money rappers make.
Kyle man. Absolute beast on the kit. I've been following his stuff for about a month now. This whole piece is killer, especially Mr. Nakamura over there.
Thoughts as I watch... "How are some people not only not staring with their jaws dropped, but not even paying attention during Patrick's playing??" "Ok, somewhat redeemed by their attention to Emmet's solo" If you were to tell me these two are playing near me? Don't tell the box office, but I might be willing to pay anything to get into that venue.
Emmet, you’re making some absolutely incredible jazz over here and it’s so inspiring to listen to man. Loved your solo on this as well as the rest of the band!
How is it possible that this video has gotten only 7.2K of likes?! This is one of the most amazing performances that I've watched in ages! Thank you for uploading it for us and God bless you, my friend!
Emmet went OFF on that piano break!!
Just One single note..
magnífico Emmet! 16:45

Patrick Bartley is one of the best altos playing today. Emmett Cohen’s solo is something I’ll be coming back to hear years from now.
You coming back?
What a great performance and band. JAZZ LIVES!
Exactly.
I’m seeing Patrick live next Saturday🔥
Now the piano community get to lose their minds transcribing this masterpiece. Fat applause
This would be so much work to transcribe
after he'd gone and done it, he's gone and done it again 😓
Well said !
Who removed the walls from Emmet's flat??? Still killing guys. Well done

That piano solo is ridiculous. I cannot stress enough, I cannot believe that's a human being playing that period, much less improvising it.
Emmett Cohen may genuinely be one of the best jazz musicians alive. I’m positive he’ll go down in history as one of the greats
Agreed
Come ON!!!! Y’all are bringing a cat to tears right now with the JOY
Peter!!!!
Speechless. That was a historical performance.
And the audience should have been hysterical - I would have been!
Historical is the best adjective to describe this!
Wow! This is jazz at the virtuoso level!
Patrick is still very exited she left

It's almost like Monk, Coltrane and Art Tatum reincarnated into one piano solo.
@@shaiguitar Agreed!!

Emmet Cohen is the best piano player in all of history after hearing that solo. IT WAS BRILLIANT.

Patrick's solo on the previous recording was so nuts Emmett had to try and one up it with this one. Crazy.
Fun "on the trail" quote at 6:39
Haha, and he did. :D
They needed to film Emmet's solo in 120p! The motion blur was insane during that solo haha! ⚡
Lets not forget the bass player is straight pounding it out! Great tone.
Emmet's piano solo is a kind of magic circus. Great recording.
Every single member of this band is incredible. There may be no better alto player on earth than Patrick Bartley.
Listening to this makes you feel glad to be alive!
makes you really appreciate how Joe builds everything up in the other video. In this one, things start so hot, they really have nowhere to go.
That’s my favorite bass sound. Mr. Nakamura bogles the shit out of it. The CATS!
I love his playing but the sound is pretty bad imo - sounds badly mic'd/recorded to me. Go figure :/
@@lukasalihein he sounds the same on all recordings, so that’s definitely the sound he’s going for

RIGHT? its so good
It's never easy on the outside. He always plays too far forward, it's borderline tiring and it hurts the swing.

that piano solo was stunning
I thought I’d heard ‘After You’ve Gone’ played before, but I was wrong. NOW I have. Thank you!
I almost cried during emmet's solo. too intense and beautiful
I swear to God this is the greatest impromptu piano solo ever played - tears flowing this is SO powerful, beautiful and life changing - THANK YOU
Emmy's the fucking truth!
Patrick sounds amazing as always... Emmet literally killed that piano break. I had goosebumps listening to it.
Such a great groove, man, I couldn’t stop my feet from tapping or my fingers from snapping
For another great groove, you might like to check out Swamp Theme covered by The Consouls featuring Pat - I can't sit still listening to it!
This cat got that pretty Johnny Hodges sound. Nice to hear!
Yes I can't understand how even old geezers like me can keep still listening to this spectacular!
OMG!!! Emmet Cohen, you are INSANE on that Steinway!!! And Patrick, WOW! Kyle, amazing as ever! Loved that bass!!
Greatest live sax solo in 2021 - INSANE energy
Check out his other version with this group!
I would genuinely pay 1000 dollars to hear this live

Je suis encore sous le choc... Je croyais que le solo de Bartley était insurpassable.... Jusqu'à écouter celui d'Emmet Cohen.... Quelle merveille !
Legitimately the greatest recording ever
Emmet and Patrick really bring so much life to the head, it speaks so clearly to my emotions. Jazz is wild.
Legitimately reduced to tears during Emmet’s solo. Wow… so powerful
Patrick... You make me smile so much. Pure happiness.
Emmett. your left hand!!! Oh my...
Solid base of Yasushi and Kyle...
Memorable
You know someone's going absolutely ape on the piano when the speed of their arms decimates your bit-rate lol
By far one of my favorite pieces
I might just like Patrick’s phrasing on this better than on the original
No. It comes close, but his original solo is the 🐐
i know what you mean by it, but calling it "the original" is funny
He has so much “dance” in this one, it’s so impressive.

Absolutely GREAT!!! Emmet's solo is BREATHTAKING!
Wow I never noticed how dynamically Emmet plays with his left hand! My phone speaker doesn't do this tune justice
I just spent 10 minutes on the toilet listening to this masterpiece
Now it is Emmet's solo that is the star of the show lol. (In my opinion, pat was still killing it like the other video)
it's sad thinking that only old people stop to listen to this music, the beauty that young people are missing is unimaginable.
I disagree, there are loads of “young” people that thoroughly enjoy this type of music and learn to play it for themselves
