    It's called a Recall because NHSA does not have an update term since not until recently in the automotive industry software and software updates are a major function in vehicles.
    In any other industry, this would be called a software patch or update.
    Most Smart Phones, computers and smart devices get software patches to address vulnerability to the system however they aren't called recalls.
    The OTA update that Tesla has released is a Recall by today's NHSA definition.

      Recall refers to a safety issue, which this is. Originally, the vehicle did have to go to the dealer for the fix or to at least be checked.

    • @haveaseatplease
      @haveaseatplease 6 месяцев назад

      Wrong! It is a recall because the issue is under investigation due to multiple accidents resulting in numerous injured drivers and passengers.

      @@haveaseatplease Wow. So the NHTSA and Tesla lied to us when they said that this was because "in certain circumstances, when Autosteer is engaged, the prominence and scope of the features control may not be sufficient to prevent the driver misuse of the SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistant feature.".
      And that the remedy was an over-the-air software update to "incorporate additional controls and alerts to those already existing on effective vehicles to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous supervisory responsibility whenever Autosteer is engaged.".
      And to top those lies off, you said there were reports of injuries caused by the software. Wow. By any chance can you provide the source for those accidents caused by the vehicle and not an inattentive driver. NHTSA doesn't list any.

    Not accurate, auto pilot does give you warnings if you don’t pay attention by looking at your phone or looking away. Maybe the older versions don’t

    What does Tesla autopilot do (not full self driving) that Toyota Safety Sense does? They are both adaptive cruise and lane centering. They both can be activated on any street.

    It is worth noting older Bolts had to have the battery physically replaced for that recall, but 2020-2022 model years only got a software "fix" to detect increased risk of failure, instead of replacing every single battery in those model years. All the car companies will try to fix recalls with software if they can, because it's easier, but that doesn't make it any less critical to fix, or any less a recall issue.

    Max and Ryan may not be correct when they assert that Autopilot will be limited to certain locations or road types. The NHTSA recall notice has a description of the changes and such restrictions are not listed. They do say that driver attention monitoring will be more stringent near traffic lights and stop signs, and other changes. Determination of road type and suitability for Autopilot use is still up to the driver, same as any car ever built with cruise control.

    • @blanketwodahs6741
      @blanketwodahs6741 7 месяцев назад +2

      Agree 200% on "road type and suitability up to driver" .. I feel that the fixation on driver attentiveness and highway or not is inapplicable as I every car for decades that has "dumb" cruise control, and "dumb" cruise control can absolutely be used on any road and absolutely requires zero driver attention. An article I read earlier quoted someone as saying that Tesla autopilot should not be allowed on "roads that have cross traffic", to which again I can point out that I have been able to use "dumb" cruise control for decades on any road, including roads with "cross traffic". Why isn't anything done about that? I can activate generic cruise control and immediately start looking out my left window, forever. Just because autopilot does lane centering and adaptive cruise, suddenly its a worse liability than "dumb" cruise control?

      Just today, I completed a 900 mile road trip, using auto pilot extensively. It is my impression that the cameras are ,indeed, actively watching the driver , and will penalize the driver for Handling the phone while in auto steer.
      Various new alerts and penalties arise. And I was concerned that the system might lock me out entirely.
      There also seem to be new bugs. For example Driver activation of the left turn signal produces a different response from a right turn signal. Try it for yourself.
      I agree that the prior system was too permissive. But the new system forces me to fear autosteer. Which is counterproductive.
      Before this week I was a big supporter of the product. Now I am starting to have doubts.
      Do Kia or Volvo do it better? Most of us EV owners will only ever drive one brand. And it takes hours and days of experimenting to appreciate the strengths and shortcomings of the various available driver assistance features.

    Hi, I enjoyed this episode. I own a Kia Telluride (2021), World Car of the Year and all that, and it has a very capable "Autopilot" Equivalent. It also has sudden braking episodes that is suggestive of being a little out of calibration--typically, a car easing into the edge of my lane, car's slowing in a turn lane that itself is a curve that crosses my path. I haven't yet had an episode of phantom braking on 4-lane highways in two years, nor on decent two-lane state highways. They are quite jarring to experience in city driving, even if I anticipate an occurrence, slowing at a rate of about 10 mph per second. I've now trained myself to hit the Cancel button on curvy roads in the city and deep rural windy roads.
    There may be a need to recalibrate the system periodically. Can it be done as a self-test or a reset? Or does it require human engagement with the recalibration process? I'll be figuring that out sometime in the next couple of months at a Kia dealership. BTW, I understand Kia's system is NOT comparable to Autopilot in design or capability, but the station-keeping of the Kia really is quite good.

    My 2018 Model 3 with FSD and it had radar that was software written out which really pissed me off! I would bet that they will stop the use of my bumper’s sonar as well! I don’t know how much I can take. The original Teslas had real rain sensors in the windshield, but Tesla could save a few dollars going with the existing cameras. Tesla is or has removed the outside temperature sensor in favor of downloading the closet weather station. I want to know the temperature of my immediate microclimate. I’ll bet that they’ll software write those out as well.

    Sorry, disagree with these views. I am not sure what update recently addressed drunk driving, texting while driving or whatever you want to do in a non Tesla. Teslas with autopilot being used is much safer than any other vehicle without driver assistance features. People that cheat Tesla's autopilot you will never end, someone will always figure out how to defeat a system. Also Tesla could deploy the "watch the road" message to autopilot vehicles since FSD you can't even look at the Tesla screen for more than 10 seconds before getting the warning.

    If you know, you know. Not a big deal.
    If one doesn’t know, apparently one over-dramatizes, tries to sow fear and anger, and simply makes up *stuff.*
    Re: AP. For the 2 ⅔ years I’ve had my M3 SR+ and use my AP - only on interstates and highways. It is an aid, not a self-driving system. Any moron knows that, it’s just that some of those morons purposely ignore that fact and abuse it.
    How does one foolproof any system designed to make an activity safer? Seat belts, speed limits, traffic signs and lights… All designed to make driving safer, and routinely abused and ignored and violated.
    In my 40,000 miles of driving, I’ve had two episodes of “phantom braking,” one minor and one that required quick reaction by me, i.e., pushing the accelerator.

    NHTSA is picking on Tesla in particular because the Tesla Autosteer is the best. My wife has a Hyundai Sante Fe with "Lane Assist" that will attempt to keep the vehicle between the lines. It can be activated in town and not just on the highway and there are no bells or whistles to remind you that Lane Assist is on. Why aren't NHTSA going after all companies? I am awaiting delivery of a Model S on Dec 20, and that date was delayed because of the software update because tesla could not sell the car without the update. Cheers

  • @robert5008

    So I have a Model 3 2022, Autopilot is so annoying I don't even bother using it. You have the most advance car on the road yet, prompts like every 30 seconds to torque the wheel going down the interstate. What is the point in the system really? I might as well drive the car myself. I have had my car since Sept 2022 and not one update on basic Autopilot. Yet how many for FSD? Truly if Tesla cares to make a safer car then it should pass down on what it has learned in FSD to the Autopilot for highway driving use.
    My pet peeve with my Model 3 is that when you have cruise control or Autopilot on the car will break to avoid an accident but god forbid the car on city streets with those systems off stop to avoid a crash. But it will make a hell of a loud BEEP just before you rear end the car ahead of you. My mother's 2018 Corolla has better driver assist features than my Tesla, at least it will stop before I plow the guy ahead of me.

      I have probably 100k miles of driving Model 3/Y autopilot .. I use it every day. I just lightly hang my left hand off of the bottom of the steering wheel and it never nags me. Its been super useful for me. I think in the end keeping a hand on the wheel is all they really expect (though unsure if it is going to actually get worse with this government interference update)

      @blanketwodahs6741 I also use the same approach to using the Autopilot. If you give a slight amount of resistance in the wheel in the line the car takes going down the road it won't annoy you. But really at that point just drive the car. Imo
