One of my coaches tells me to keep my chin down and look through my eyebrows. He told us a story of a time he let his head come up when he started out and his head got lurched really hard from taking a hook to the head.

#11: Thinking that shadow boxing can account for any more than 10% of proper preparation for a fight. Most of the challenges in a real fight (particularly guys who don't fight much) are getting past fear and (if you can do that) seeing the other fighter. If you're afraid and don't want to fight, shadow boxing can provide a false sense of preparedness. Once someone's coming at you and you feel their power and speed, all of your dancing and air punching may feel like a useless ego boosting activity and you can easily lose confidence in yourself and get hurt. You have to be comfortable with the thought that real fists are flying and operate calmly. Also, the person who wins the fight is usually the one who can better master the other fighter's rhythmic movements, energy, awareness, reactions, goals, abilities, etc. This is the real art of fighting. When you see that the other guy's trying to take your head off with haymakers or trying to take you to the mat, or trying to win through counter strikes, or what have you; that tells you a lot about how to adapt, create setups, play on his weaknesses, etc.

I agree with everything he said except the part where he said to clench your fist in shadow at about 2:44. Here is my reasoning. When hitting a solid object like an opponent it will be automatic that you will clench and 'harden' your fist anyway. So there is no need to do it in practice, infact better if you dont cause one of the reasons shadow boxing is effective is cause you get into the habit of not tensing up your arms, body etc before (and during) throwing punches and that REALLY helps with speed and power. My opinion. I know my post seems a little strange but I am convinced of this . One of the ways you learn to 'throw' your energy - through- the target is not to tense up at all and shadow boxing teaches you that. Now of course you will always tense up a little no matter what, when you hitting something, but the less you do tense up, the faster and more powerful you will be. That is one of the reasons the best punches in sparring or in a fight are the ones that happen 'automatically'.
I have a little brother who's just starting to get into muay thai but im too lazy to teach him the basics so I just send him the link of this video about shadow boxing. So far this is the best one I've seen and even helped correct some of my bad habits when shadow boxing. thanks fightTIPS!
QUESTION: When i watch the pros like Pacquiao or Mayweather shadow box, i notice they either throw those multiple fast uppercuts and also they dont fully extend their arms when shadow boxing, which is totally opposite of what you advised. Are they doing the wrong thing?
It's just because it look faster, they don't normally train like that but the media and fans love when it's fast so they do that in front of the cameras just to show up a bit.

Shane, can you make a video of how to mitigate pressure against the invisible opponent? I usually visualize my opponent pressing me, so I have a ton of work with reaching, framing away, switching to cover more ground and pivoting off of the close quarters.
I am 7 months into kickboxing. I am guilty of some of those mistakes. Full extension cause i try to punch fast, and im usually very stiff when it comes to shadow boxing. Thanks for the tips!
Everything u said is great advice if you're training to fight in a ring. I just think alot changes with any type of training that involves training to fight and defend yourself if necessary in the street. You're striking is nolonger calm and you're not so focused on technique. You're punches and combos are thrown fast and repetitive because you're face to face with someone who is trying to hurt you and end the fight as quickly as possible

I think I’m a little late to the party. But! I decided I wanted to dabble in shadow boxing as another form of cardio. I ended up getting a boxing game on the Quest. It’s super interactive, and you have someone else throwing punches at you. May be a really fun alternative to just sitting there swinging at nothing. VR is a God send in regards to fun cardio.

No, I am currently lifting 3 times a week trying to gain muscle and weight, while also doing Muy Thai twice a week and it has not had an impact on my weight, if anything I have developed more muscle in my thighs and back so I would not be concerned my friend
Spider Knows I am not going to argue with you as you clearly have your mind set on your opinion, but I will say that I have continued to gain weight by doing both weight lifting and Muy Thai religiously, and I know about 4 other people that body build and engage in a combat sport and have told me that while cardio can kill your gains as long as you balance and properly manage your different workouts and eat the appropriate amount of protein and calories you will be fine, again I'm sorry if I offended you I was just sharing my knowledge and personal experience on the matter and that it hasn't haltered my goal to gain weight. And Luq Shah you may listen to either one of us, it does not matter to me, I suggest you consult your fitness trainer (if you have one) and your coach, I would definitely listen to them over us any day. Is it beneficial to shadow box with small weights in hand? I was told you should only practice uppercuts with weights, as the weight will throw off your accuracy with hooks, jabs and straights.
about the first tip, doing moves without footwork is great for beginners cause their body will understand the movement itself and after they will learn how to do the footwork with a familiar move
I don't have a punching bag, but is it good to throw punches and kick with wrist/ankle weights? I notice my punches and kicks get faster every time I use them for that, but just looking for opinions.
