Street fighter here. Rutten is 100% correct. I knocked out one guy with a clothline landed on his nose bridge and in another incident another guy with a palm heel strike landed on his chin. In both cases, they oozed out blood. Minimal stamina is spent, unlike punching. From my experience, striking using palm is faster than fist-punching, maybe because it didn't telegraph. Ironically, palm strike is often neglected, and almost never practiced. I only used it instinctively. Perhaps I should really train myself in that skill.

Here's the problem; if Bas clothlined you like that; even if you are fully covered up it wouldn't help that much... That bag is probably heavier than me; and he crushed it... Bas is the man.
Love watching you, Baz. I am a multiple BB, but I'm 61 and disabled with artificial hips twice, 3 back surgeries, and 6 knee surgeries, so I have spent age 38-61 with daily emphasis on hands. The speed and power come from no longer using 16 oz on the heavy bag, but 3lb dumbbells with 3 min rounds. I enjoy watching your common sense videos. I've learned a lot since 14, but realize I'm never too experienced to keep learning. Thanks you. Kindest Regards, Doc.
@Cliff Scott. I'm in the same situation; 5 back surgeries (the last one left me far more disabled), elbow surgeries with one causing me to use my right elbow only as a last resort, arthritis badly in my knees etc. I'm 68 and hurting since 50. Any tips from you will be greatly appreciated! I refuse to be a victim, consequently most of my reactions are held back until someone grabs me because I can't afford to allow distance between the attacker and me. Also I'm very aware that my reactions have to be immediately disabling or lethal. Thanks 😊 in advance.
Those wrist strikes are savage. I remember watching this video when it first came out. Great refresher. Huge honor to have gotten to do a seminar with Bas.
When you know how to administer them properly, inside srike, horizontally, on the knee areas, using both the inside and out part of the bottom of foot can be dangerous, especially when you persevere with them, from both legs. on both stances. Then, when the guy is sure it is going there again, what do you think? Nasty straights on the chin! :) Chop the foundation, alright?! ;-)
I LIGHTLY tapped the bone behind my ear with my wristbone a bit. I could feel my damn BRAIN shake and my vision went blurry almost instantly. Bas is a goddamn SCIENTIST when it comes to combat sports. I LOVE listening to him talk about it! I'd NEVER, in my life attempt to try and get into a fight with that man, goddamn SCARY!

I always preferred watching Pride over UFC and much of it was due to Bas's wonderful commentary. Such a good but still deadly guy. Gotta both love and respect him.
Very good video good advice for many people. As a 4th degree BB in Kung Fu San Soo this video was just another confirmation of what I already train in and knew. The striking point behind the ear is a key point for us it can however be fatal if applied too hard and to directly. But when you are on the street it is better to be in court defending yourself than to be dead. Like Bas said no reason to hammer a drunk but if you are going up against say two guys intent on hurting you all bets are off. Again great video! Also Bas desired the way he makes this strike can easily be misunderstood I know what he is saying but maybe a better way of saying it is as follows- At the base of your palm opposite the thumb side is an egg shaped area of your palm, the right lower corner of your right palm and the left lower corner of your left hand/palm this is solid bone and much stronger than your knuckles,
If you’re going up against two guys, you run or draw your gun. You’re not fighting two guys and winning unless they are both incompetent or don’t really want to fight you in the first place.
Great video, I'll share funny experience, I was fighting a drunk guy in front of a bar, who had harassed my girlfriend and wanted to kick my ass to get with her, he even grabbed her ass, anyways, He pushed me then established a boxing stance, with both elbows protecting his rib cage, I indeed instinctively used an open hand palm strike to the back of his head, over his guard, ignoring his defense, now this was not full strength and did not knock him out at all, it certainly managed to hurt him so much that it made him very angry and confused, so he rushed me running! I simply ducked under, double legged him and next thing you know I smashed him neck first on the ground. Thanks to the palm strike that really broke his pattern, and the fact that he probably never fought a wrestler before really both worked wonders for me in this awful situation.
Salvador Cuarto Meh, his stance seems ok to me, like typical english boxing style stance although very flat footed, but he suddenly rushed me arms blazing like crazy throwing a volley of haymakers, so I was like hell no, rushed his legs, picked him up as high as I could and slammed him with all my weight adding to his neck first on the concrete. He was out from the slam so it did not go further.
+North American RUclipsr In that case I would be interested to hear, at least as much as we can understand from his description, what you would have done. The first rule is to try to avoid a fight but there is a time when you have to, and his situation certainly warranted action. Some times not fighting back is what encourages your aggressor to escalate and he needs a pattern interrupt to stop it. I think French Grappling Addict did the right thing by not kicking him after he was down.
Bas is so laid back. THAT is confidence! The guy is not just an explosive violence monster. He actually considers when and how much violence is required. That also reflects his confidence in himself. Way too many people are like crazy ass, rabid dogs, just waiting to explode on someone....anyone! Or a gun with a hair trigger! All that, comes from fear and LACK of confidence. That and watching too many movies. Anyway, great advice guys. Cheers
Bas gave a shout out to the late, great Ramon "The Diamond" Dekkers. One of the first (if not THE first) European to beat Muy Thai fighters in Thailand. Dekkers was amazing. Check out some of his fights on RUclips.
Unless your fists are heavily conditioned like those old Okinawan Karate masters, you risk breaking your fist if you hit a hard bony area of your attacker! It's best to always use the open hand in self defence!
Bas, great video, fighting smarter is always good. Sometimes in class we use a Haito, Kokenuchi, or a Koteuchi to deliver a strike to the nerve centers in the neck, or at the pivot point In the jaw bone. I will remember the back of the ear. We use Shotei on a regular basis when striking to the head, as bone on bone can hurt. Keep up the good work!
I should have posted this years ago but it's never too late. I like this channel because you bring proper technique and great foundation in a dynamic way. Thanks for referring to Bas Ruten as the legend he is. Cheers !
The O2 Trainer seems like a good device; but I'm worried about the idea that it could cure asthma. I'd advise anyone with asthma always to carry their inhaler regardless of whether or not they use the O2 trainer. Asthma could kill you. It's just too dangerous to take risks with. Please err on the side of caution. In Britain there's a similar device called the PowerBreathe, developed by a sports scientist at an English University, and is based on genuine research. I started using one this week.
I've been saying roughly the same thing as Bas for more than a decade now; palm strikes when aiming to the skull, or you might break your hand. Fists are for softer targets; the body, the teeth, the nose, the side of the jaw if you are 100% sure you won't hit the skull instead. His clothesline can hit on the skull and damage your wrist though... he really should be palm striking there to disperse the possible bone-on-bone impact. It wouldn't take much/any power away and it's actually a bit less telegraphed since you can have your arm a bit more bent and still land the shot squarely. I'm surprised he didn't mention how the angle of this attack comes in right through the blind spot of the same-side eye, where the ocular nerves attach to the eyeball. If the target is covering up in a tight guard and their far-side eye can't see your arm, they might not even see your arm coming and just think think you are making a quick stance adjustment. And we all know the shots that hurt are the ones you didn't see. Disguising heavy shots is the secret in fighting. Heavy shots are slow, because they need your full weight behind them like this clothesline. Stepping in with your attack is risky, it commits your movements fully and is easy for an experienced opponent to read. George Foreman's awkward looking punches are a good example. (He hits harder than Mike Tyson btw, by a lot. Mike's talent was in how fast his shots were while still having power, and in setting them up.) When George hit, the opponent got ROCKED. But he missed often because of the way he threw, no power ever sacrificed for the sake of speed. Heavy shots are finishers. You get the opponent off balance a bit, stunned a bit, something. During that moment, you hit them with something that's usually foolish to do, but has your full weight behind it. Fight over, usually. I love this clothesline. It reminds me a lot of a few Aikido moves.
Hey Shane! Awesome video man. Shane, do you think if you could possibly to a detailed video on how to throw an open palm/bone strike? Because I think it's a great idea to use this in a street fight, but how exactly would you use it? I know it sounds stupid, but it'd be awesome if you could man! :)
I have always had asthma....but I did breathing and lung stretching exercises as a kid, as well as played trumpet (and many other instruments). I got to the point where I could run 5 miles a day and no inhaler....or hold my breath for 1:45 mins, which is a lot for me. haha I haven't been doing that lately but I still rarely use my inhaler and I'm almost 40.
Bas is the only person I've ever seen explain the palm strike correctly! That is my go to strike. I've knocked out quite a few people with that strike.
Even Rutten didn't use that technique when boxing technique was allowed. That is just a workaround when more efficient normal boxing technique is not allowed.
Great self defence advice. Never considered using what are the most powerful points on the body. Also, squeezing fist on impact allows the boxer to whip the wrist first before making contact - super effective. Thanks.
Watching Bas hit that bag really brings home how superbly conditioned these fighters are. The fact that ANYONE could last more than 30 seconds in a ring with Bas is astonishing.
But comparing that strike to a kick is crazy. One goes almost perfectly horizontal, the other has to be at an angle since your legs are much farther down. And just because it doesnt push the bag as much doesnt mean that the palm strike is more powerful. A lot of times the ones that push more are less powerful since the energy is focused on pushing rather than causing a heavy blow. For example, a gunshot is meant to penetrate, not push the target. If it pushed the target more it would not cause as much damage as if that was focused on penetrating.
+DeagleBeagle I agree. An upper body strike can "fake" a lot of bag movement because you can keep exerting pressure even after the swing. A leg strike leaves you with only one foot as support so the bag movement is drawn from impact and not much else - as trying to push the bag can easily make one fall backwards.
Sounds interesting! But Bas strikes are definitely no joke! They made a test with a dummy and measured the force of his strikes and it was off the charts. His strikes are definitely stronger than a normal guys kicks
The high roundhouse kick takes more time to throw as well, and is a larger movement, which someone might see coming. Also, you're extremely screwed if your leg gets grabbed or you accidentally slip, which might happen, since the footwear and pants you're wearing on the streets might not be ideal for that much stretch and movement. Obviously, landing on your back is a bad idea against multiple opponents. Hence why the clothesline arm strike is an overall more effective move. Also, the push factor can be useful. If the opponent is disbalanced, you can go in with more strikes.
You're actually agreeing with Bas Ruten I think. It seems to me that he is pointing out that very thing, that although a kick is normally more powerful than an attack that uses arm strength, that the angle weakens the kick to where the arm strike is more powerful. He's saying the arm strike is the higher altitude arm equivalent of a leg sweep, just at a greater height. He's not saying that arm strikes are more powerful than kicks, but rather arm strikes at that height in that direction are better.
Same strike I've used several times with the instep of my foot. Its lands just behind the hands blocking the opponents face. Between the ear and neck stem. If.you use a ridge hand stick make sure your fingers are tight because if not it hurts like hell !
Love Bas! I’ve used his combatives combo drill audio instructional for many years in Krav Maga training. He is very entertaining to watch and makes it look easy but you will quickly learn your limitations if you try to keep up with his routines. Absolutely brutal!
busyrightnow7259 sure sure bud you got it all figured out lol the toughest fight you've ever been in is arguing with your mother, I'm confident in that Enough said.
Quodge Why is how much the bag moves not a useful metric? Because I can push slowly on the bag and move it more than any strike ever will. That push is not an effective strike. Now, if you could punch a hole straight through the bag and not move it at all, like a bullet, THAT would be an effective strike. So obviously, by that standard, how much the bag moves is not a useful metric for how hard or effective the strike is.
Quodge Why would you say that after the explanation I just gave you? NO! If you want to know what a strike is capable of, measure it in pounds per square inch. That and it's tactical advantage, things like how hard is it to block, how easy it is to conceal it etc. tells you everything you need to know. Tactically, I'd say this strike is top notch, especially applied to the right target. Power wise, I'd say it's also probably very good but I'm judging by the sound it made and how it deformed the bag, not how far it moved it.
I think you took the concept of moving the bag too literally. That's why what you said sounded odd to me. Cos yeah looks like he hammered it doesn't it.. Tactically it seems like a great sucker punch but I dunno if its too telegraphed to work for stand up? Maybe throw it later towards the end of a combo..?
Don't forget that Mike Tyson himself broke his hand knocking out an angry ex-opponent (Mike Green) who jumped him in the street. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Tyson_vs._Mitch_Green#1988_Streetfight
The palm heel strike to the neck , mandible or temple is what I practice daily on a century Bob. One hit knock out. I concentrate on speed and contact power transfer. Sensei Taiji Kase taught me this.
I know these guys are trained fighters so especially Bas is probably as tough as old boots , but if an ordinary guy tried those arm shots on the streets, would'nt it just give you a dead arm , especially if it hit another solid bone ?
If you do it on a target with some give then it won't be so bad as opposed to hitting an immovable object like a pillar then that'll prolly not feel so good. Bone conditioning can help and that's why muay thai fighters condition our shins.
wate nallace I don't doubt you are right, but in the same way as a Thai boxer Thai boxer has much tougher shins than your average guy, would'nt you need to toughen up your arm before you could do that against an opponent.
Usually I don't trust people that recommend palm strikes cauz it's sounds like shit to me compared to a good hard punch. But now it's fucking Bas Rutten that tells us to do it so maybe it isn't so shitty right ? xD I mean it's coming from a guy that has never been defeated in his career and that fought several bouncer simultaneously in a bar, he also made a guy fly through a fucking window , I thought this only happened in movies lmao xD.
Thinking about it... it does actually make sense... anyone that's boxed or fought has fucked up their wrists through poor technique or poor choice of punch... open palm your hands are a lot more solid and based... problem is practice...
***** dude i know. bas rutten is a legend perhaps the scariest white guy to ever be in the ring. Just so happens that king of queens is one of my favorite shows of all time. +Blulk Smash nice. Another oldtimer who saw the man at work during the height of his career. interesting how many that call him a legend these days only got to know him through those hilarious self-defense video sequences. even more absurd, how most of the same guys like to bash old school Ufc/Pride for supposedly being 'unskilled' and 'unevolved', unaware of how paradox (rightfully!) carrying Bas on their hands is at the same time.
Attacking the vital points in the body is known as Atemi in Judo, Aikido , Jujitsu and Ninjutsu. Judo or Karate chops to the points behind the ear are also known as "Rabbit Chops". This and Judo chops to the carotid artery can easily knock out a large strong attacker! Just specialise in hitting these 2 places. This is all a person needs to know for practical street self defence.
@Kirk Landau fr. Went out on the 4th of July for the first time in a few years this year. Walked into a bar and got stopped by a black guy who told me I had cankles. Cool story. Guy was hammered.
Interesting, but why are we talking about "illegal" and "legal" when someone attacks you in the street, which is illegal? I'm only interested in effective or useless.
jjenson2006 Since I left the army I haven't handled any. They are not commonly owned by normal people in the UK. Knives are a bigger threat, but mainly in black and middle eastern communities, although I believe Poles and Bulgarians carry meat skewers, which are not illegal because they have no cutting edge.
Bas is referring to legality in competition. In boxing and MMA competitions strikes directly to the back of an opponents head is illegal. So, he is saying that although these strikes appear to wrap around to the back of an opponents head, they are still technically legal within the context of competition. I think he has spent so much time within the world of martial arts competition that he begins to talk about it or speak in reference to it without any advance warning.

Dude shane this is my favorite video so far lol. Bas Rutten is the real MVP
Hell yeah he is! Man is jam-packed with knowledge.
Totally man. He is a real master
+fightTIPS you got to be thinking of moving up a lil

Imagine trying to get away from him with stolen possessions and then out of nowhere he takes you out with that clothesline

As a martial artist myself I have explained this to many, the open hand palm strike is so fast and so devastating to ones attacker.
:) Chop the foundation, alright?! ;-)
Lol as long she’s not looking when you slap her.
THIS IS HOW TYSON FURY BOXES WITH THAT GLOVE CONSPIRACY.
Wodinn don't suck on bas! you're pussying! fight is cool don't be afraid, it's a nice sensation when blood leaves your head and everything turns black. On the other side, better look for home Wodinn, you must be obedient at your tae-kwondo lessons... pss
I've seen footage when he uses this technique. When he connects it sounds like a gun shot and his opponent drop like dead men.
Wanted to post the exact same comment, barely 2 years late to the party
@@joseluis-wd3hi This guy is an example of why you don't do drugs boys and girls.

Good call
what the hell... I searched him up and he's like his twin brother...
The reason is that when you’re a bad ass you don’t have to worry so much.
Dead Kennedys!!
I always preferred watching Pride over UFC and much of it was due to Bas's wonderful commentary. Such a good but still deadly guy. Gotta both love and respect him.
+sleepybird09 what's pride seems interesting if you guys said its better than UFC
MobileGamer488 Pride is a different older fighting promotion
Heck yeah. Different Gracies vs Sakuraba. Good stuff.
Bas is the best of all time. I really enjoy watching his fights on RUclips.
Like a Bas Shane... Like a Bas
+Micah B. thats awesome dude :-D
His last name is ruben, not Shane, stupid.
Thanks to the palm strike that really broke his pattern, and the fact that he probably never fought a wrestler before really both worked wonders for me in this awful situation.
damn man great story, was that guy experienced in fight?
guys like him only deserve to get kicked in the ass
Salvador Cuarto Meh, his stance seems ok to me, like typical english boxing style stance although very flat footed, but he suddenly rushed me arms blazing like crazy throwing a volley of haymakers, so I was like hell no, rushed his legs, picked him up as high as I could and slammed him with all my weight adding to his neck first on the concrete. He was out from the slam so it did not go further.
French Grappling Addict oh well he got what he deserved,no one should harass a women in a relationship
Salvador Cuarto I really wanted to kick him on the ground afterwards as I was still mad, but he really seemed harmless at that point.

Sometimes in class we use a Haito, Kokenuchi, or a Koteuchi to deliver a strike to the nerve centers in the neck, or at the pivot point
In the jaw bone. I will remember the back of the ear. We use Shotei on a regular basis when striking to the head, as bone on bone can hurt. Keep up the good work!
bas is the nicest guy,but then again that's because bas is someone you wouldn't want to piss off! lol

Who is here after the Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury 2 fight?

This was 4 yrs ago. It's like he seen the fight in the future. Should get him to review the film
Iam what a shame on Tyson fury
Big ups on Mr. Rutten for caring about his asthma and sout out to other asthmatic combat artists out there!
Bas is no doubt a fight genius. The term is thrown around so much but it's only applicable to a few: Bas is truly thinking outside the box.
Most RUclipsrs have no idea how badass Bas is.. his prime was before true MMA and UFC or he would probably be known as the best ever. True legend
shane you should do more videos with bas rutten lol
bas is a veteran to listen too hands down
I've been saying roughly the same thing as Bas for more than a decade now; palm strikes when aiming to the skull, or you might break your hand.
"Swing just like a hook, and then you go.. BOOOOOOOM!"
Mas Bas por favor.
I got to the point where I could run 5 miles a day and no inhaler....or hold my breath for 1:45 mins, which is a lot for me. haha
I haven't been doing that lately but I still rarely use my inhaler and I'm almost 40.
Came in from another video Bas Rutten is legendary for the Palm Strike, those forearm bone strikes are awesome too.
Gotta love bas awesome guy great sense of humor
holy crap. the legend himself. deng ada deng ada deng
Thanks Bas, I've just knocked myself out :P
Bas is the only person I've ever seen explain the palm strike correctly! That is my go to strike. I've knocked out quite a few people with that strike.
I like Bas's style everytime he shows something new and very scientific.
El Guapo! where have you been?
No one is talking about it but I'm sure thats the punch technique tyson fury used against wilder thats why hes gloves looked flimsy
Even Rutten didn't use that technique when boxing technique was allowed. That is just a workaround when more efficient normal boxing technique is not allowed.
Oh my god, he's still a monster...
Great self defence advice. Never considered using what are the most powerful points on the body. Also, squeezing fist on impact allows the boxer to whip the wrist first before making contact - super effective. Thanks.
Watching Bas hit that bag really brings home how superbly conditioned these fighters are. The fact that ANYONE
could last more than 30 seconds in a ring with Bas is astonishing.
What you say is absolutely true!
But that strikes that he is showing is very powerful.
His words abt Mike tyson shows how much respect these legends have for "The baddest man on the planet"
This is what happens children when you piss off mr clean.👊👍😁
Same strike I've used several times with the instep of my foot. Its lands just behind the hands blocking the opponents face. Between the ear and neck stem. If.you use a ridge hand stick make sure your fingers are tight because if not it hurts like hell !
Ive alwsys wondered how people dont break their foot kicking someone in the head. My foot would shatter lol
I love this. I teach a lot of strikes that don't involve fists because it's really easy to hurt your hand.
Love Bas! I’ve used his combatives combo drill audio instructional for many years in Krav Maga training. He is very entertaining to watch and makes it look easy but you will quickly learn your limitations if you try to keep up with his routines. Absolutely brutal!

Bas is a legend, such an intelligent fighter.
Good tips, thanks, especially about striking with the wrist bone rather than the palm.
Palm strikes are the best. I've been using it since the 60's when I was just a young boy.
How much the bag moves is really not a useful metric but that's definitely a hard strike.
Why?
Quodge Why is how much the bag moves not a useful metric? Because I can push slowly on the bag and move it more than any strike ever will. That push is not an effective strike. Now, if you could punch a hole straight through the bag and not move it at all, like a bullet, THAT would be an effective strike. So obviously, by that standard, how much the bag moves is not a useful metric for how hard or effective the strike is.
But in this context its probubly good though rght?

My first video watched. I just subscribed. I wish I was in California see this guy live. Great stuff!
3:31 thank you for rewinding that for my high ass
You're welcome 😂😂
I know these guys are trained fighters so especially Bas is probably as tough as old boots , but if an ordinary guy tried those arm shots on the streets, would'nt it just give you a dead arm , especially if it hit another solid bone ?
Maybe so if you don't hit a good target. The average 'dude' gets hit in the neck he will drop
Just try it on a bag dude.
If you do it on a target with some give then it won't be so bad as opposed to hitting an immovable object like a pillar then that'll prolly not feel so good. Bone conditioning can help and that's why muay thai fighters condition our shins.
it's a lot sturdier than punching them with the little bones in your fist
wate nallace I don't doubt you are right, but in the same way as a Thai boxer Thai boxer has much tougher shins than your average guy, would'nt you need to toughen up your arm before you could do that against an opponent.
Thinking about it... it does actually make sense... anyone that's boxed or fought has fucked up their wrists through poor technique or poor choice of punch... open palm your hands are a lot more solid and based... problem is practice...
practice practice practice. It feels weird if youre not used to it.,
In early Original UFC fights guys broke their hands a lot. Pre gloves.
It's why some of them started striking with their palm. Then was it was Tank Abbot who popularized the glove?
He has been defeated. Never been knocked out though.

Interesting, but why are we talking about "illegal" and "legal" when someone attacks you in the street, which is illegal? I'm only interested in effective or useless.
The most effective is gunshot to the chest.

Since I left the army I haven't handled any.
