Guys, Stop Making So Many Aesthetics. They're All The Same.

- If you're on Pinterest as often as I am, you know that aesthetics flood your page whether you like it or not. And the more you look at them, the more you realize, wow, a lot of these aesthetics are EXACTLY the same. Why is this generation so obsessed with aesthetics, and why the obsession to make so many of them? I think it has something to do with individualism and everyone's obsession with being unique. Because, honestly, if these aesthetics didn't have different names, I would assume they are the same thing. What do you guys think?

i also hate the consumerism implanted behind a lot of these aesthetics. you cant just use whats in your closet, you have to match it completely. this means buying completely unnecessary items to fit in so you dont get hit with the "is the coquette in the room with us". (and the result of many new aesthetics to fit in)
Yea it's sad, and alot of ppl don't donate them so they end up in landfills getting thrown away smh
Also the shit that gets donated usually ends up in a landfall anyways
Agreed. So many people waste so much money on aesthetics that theyll switch up on in a few months anyways. I have an aesthetic ive been following for a few years now which i kind of made up (tropical band kid) and 99% of my room decor is handmade, from local thrift stores, and old sheet music and instruments that are very much in use!!! I know its hyperspecific, but it just really works out for my situation since in live in a coastal town and there is tons upon tons of thrift store items that fit my aesthetic.
I really wish I could find that one lady who was downright switching identities every season. Completely changing herself and her space with hundreds of dollars worth of things to completely change aesthetics. Bubblegum kawaii girl one day, goth the next, punk then vanilla and so on. Just desperately trying to stay with trends and no sense of identity...
i mean if its a noncoquette outfit and they're calling it coquette then thats that
These "aesthetics" are just beige millennial core but for gen z...
Also your hair is so pretty dude, I love the shade
Vanilla girl? Wasn't that the beige girl at one point or am I buggin?
I just searched it on pinterest and pretty much the same aesthetic comes up so basically yea lol
@@Kaysaja Jeez, give it a month and it'll be Eggshell Girl
if it was, i wouldn't be shocked if the change was made due to the recent backlash against "sad beige moms" or whatnot. kind of a "guys!! no!! im not like THAT, im ACTUALLY aesthetic!" thing.

Fuck aesthetics. Be what u want. Like what u want. Wear what u want.
Yeah, I can attest to that. I love cottage core and will build my home around that, but will still display my toy collection, which probably is also an aesthetic. And My clothes style is soemthing liek lumber jack/adventurer? At this point my asthetic is just "Hi! I'm Lonnie :3"
Very good analysis.
Honestly I hate MOST aesthetics. It was all fun and unique at first, but now it’s bland, overly specific and repetitive. I just can’t keep up.
I have a style, I’ll just stick to that and what I like without assigning a name to it. Too limiting.
Yeah, I don’t know why they want us to pick one aesthetic and stick to it. I apparently dress both grunge, dark academia and cottagecore. What am I supposed to just pick one and get rid of all my other clothes?
@@kirbthebeanby their standards apparently, but if we think logical then you do you. I’m such a mess with style and decor that so I have no aesthetic, but I’m fine with that lol.
@@N0EL-7007 Peope should just dress and decorate how they want. They shouldn’t need to feel like they have to uphold a standard for other people online that they don’t even know
Why are people taking aesthetics this hard...? There's nothing crazy about it. Its just to put yourself in a category and find yourself, its fun and unique. I'm a girly girl, and I really like coquette fashion
@@dani.1170 I think it’s just that some people try too hard to only match the “new cool aesthetic” and then that also feeds overconsumption and some people don’t want to find their own style but feel like they need to be clones.
same with makeup like the strawberry makeup, latte makeup, office siren... i mean they all look exactly the same😴😴
Nah they're different tho
@@joy0953what is the difference?
Or there are differences but they are so subtle that you really don’t need a whole new term to describe the amended look….
@@samisparkleheart strawberry makeup is no makeup makeup look that's more dewy and heavy on using blush. Latte makeup is bronze and brown look. Office siren is black and grey eyeshadow with prescription glasses and more fitting for corporate look. I can tell the original commenter doesn't even know what the makeup look like and just spewing nonsense
@joy0953 Oh, ok! Thanks, I was curious. I had heard of strawberry makeup, but not the others. I'm 37 and not on Tik Tok, so I am in the dark on a lot of these concepts. I just find the subject matter interesting.
This reminds me how there's a whole lot of different gothic aesthetics like: gothic lolita, romantic goth, cyber goth, pastel goth, nu goth, gothabilly, etc. All of them are gothic style but they are unique 😌 you don't have to follow an aesthetic to a tee to be part of that, or you can play with it!
Yeah, I personally like goblincore, which does subtly different from the other similar aesthetics. Fairycore is much more feminine and cottagecore focuses much less of nature and more on a time capsule lifestyle.
@@baileycaywood8719 this is so real
definitely play with it, thats nothing new and people shouldnt be strict with anyone about aesthetics unless they're trying to look like a certain name-bound-aesthetic
As a victorian goth i totally agree!
These aesthetics really have Gen Z messed up, don't they. The current aesthetic classes are actually the antithesis of individualism and self expression. Changing the rings you wear while dressed in a certain aesthetic is self expression. From what I can tell if you deviate from an aesthetic you have to explain to the hive mind why you think differently, and this can cause anxiety if you are insecure in yourself or are just starting to figure out what you like. Then again this view may come from me being very much into the Punk aesthetic back in the 90s. It was an aesthetic where you were challenged if you didn't dress a certain way and if did dress that way. The secret sauce was to just express yourself and not care what others thought.
After accurately naming vanilla girl I paused the video to step outside and go hang out with some real life women as a grounding exercise 👍
One of the issues is micro trends and how stuff goes “out of style” so fast. I personally love the “screw it this looks good, I like it, and it’s in my budget plus I need new clothes” aesthetic… and also I have a couple styles outside of that I like that boil down to “button down, vest, tie, jeans/slacks, hat, boots/oxfords” which works for a lot of slightly nicer situations and has a lot of mix and match potential.
No aesthetic is ready for the stupidity of my caliber
Dumbass aesthetic 🤪💫😋✨🤤💋
I’m really sad that “aesthetics” seems to have entirely replaced the concept of subcultures.
9:34 There´s a problem with people feeling the NEED to find /"have" a name for it, not them a BEING in that little box, because boxes don´t exist, everything is moving, evolving and changing my the minute. No one should force themselves to put anything in a box, because they DO change. It´s really rather about finding a name, a tag, a "brand" for their style etc.
At least I feel like that´s the case.
Same wit sexuality. Sure, people CAN put themselves in a box, for example I can call myself bi, but then a few years later I have the right to call myself pan or smth else or whatever because sexuality is fluid, it changes, you gain more experience and stuff and same for outfits.
I used to try to find my aesthetic and when I'd ask my brother like "Oh what do you think my aesthetic is" he'd just answer "It's just you aesthetic" because my aesthetic is just a blend of other aesthetics and instead of finding my very specific aesthetic I just call myself like sceneskatergrunge if I ever need to say I have an aesthetic, not everything needs a label especially something as changing as an aesthetic.
that’s just your personal style!
So basically… be yourself🫶🫶
i don’t understand the need to put yourself into an aesthetic box. it feels limiting imo
i've been thinking about the amount of aesthetics there are a lot lately, and i totally agree that there's gotta be a link between them and consumerism. however, and let me know if i'm being too out there with this one, i feel like i've also seen a lot of media that praises both maximalism and individuality. in a world that treats the word "basic" as only the most devastating of things to be, i think a lot of people have turned to accessorizing or aesthetics in an attempt to differentiate themself. it's become something not just associated with our appearance, but perhaps even something intended to define our very sense of self. there's a TON of "how to live like [insert aesthetic here]" posts on pinterest, which lead me to think this might be the case.
I'm of the opinion that the reason we have so many aesthetics is an interesting combination of striving to be an individual whilst also striving to conform.
We are in an age, where fitting in and being an individual feel like they're of nearly equal importance. Tweaking one aesthetic just a little makes you more unique, it creates a more niche aesthetic and feels closer to yourself as an individual. But you dont stand out so much its potentially off-putting.
Most people involved in aesthetic chasing are young, they care about presenting in a way that conforms to society, stands out a little, but not so much that they fall out of favor. They dont want to be an "aesthetic chaser" so they'll latch on to smaller known similar aesthetics when one begins to trend.
THANK YOU, I hate aesthetics at this point, everyone's so busy trying to be someone else
I wonder if those are real aesthetics people wear irl or only pinterest aesthetics that only exist to be looked at on influencers.
that's a good point I only ever really see the vanilla girl aesthetic irl I think because of how casual it is, but I haven't really seen anyone yet in cottagecore or like tropical girl aesthetic
me actually getting those "aesthetics" right is insane
So… there’s coconut aesthetic, vanilla aesthetic, and a few different flavour-themed aesthetics…
Can I make a Mtn. Dew Baha Blast aesthetic?
(PS, I’m saying this to be facetious; if that is an actual aesthetic, I don’t know that. And if that is the case… please don’t tell me. I don’t wanna know. XD)
As long as I get to make peach ice tea aesthetic 👀
@@Kaysaja sure; sounds way better than my idea. XD
What would that aesthetic entail? I just imagine “Mtn dew Baha blast” aesthetic as just the worst choice in every possible circumstance.

Cheered when I got vanilla girl right, only lasted 0.3 seconds because I realised I need to touch some grass
Yeah I started to realize that goblin core kinda began to look like fairy grunge and which tbh is basically like "earthy girl" core and I was confused for a bit like "if someone asks me what style I'm wearing I don't know what I'd tell them" then I realized.... I don't really care and it's not that serious 😭😭
ever since goblincore became one of the muddled tags on vinted, it does all kinda look the same. however to me, goblincore is not fashion but state of mind. it's wanting to eat rocks at a gift shop, being friends with animals general society considers ugly, and being a little feral as a treat >:3
ngl rocks be lookin mad scrumptious sometimes so I get it lol
Hey girl! First of all you’re stunning and your hair looks amazing! And great vid, great analysis. I’ve been struggling with aesthetics for a while and was thinking too much about my style, my behaviour, my room, hobbies, friends etc and whether it fits in *that one specific* aesthetic or not. I got so tired of trying to make everything about it so one day I just decided to stop it all and live freely how I want right now and I realised it’s actually great to be different every day, to dress differently and to spend time differently. I feel so much better since I stoped panicking about these aesthetics and fitting in. We really are unique, all of us, and I believe we should embrace it, mix every core we like without sticking to the only one and limiting ourselves just to be “different” while actually being so similar to each other
Thank I for ur kind words! ❤️ I'm glad u were able to break free from the trap lol it can be suffocating being one thing all the time
You're going to BLOW UP. Really enjoying your content!
vintage, dark academia and old money seem to be the same core idea plastered for different social classes or ‘seriousness’
I think some people need to just rethink their clothing choices entirely. How you dress is a reflection of you, and should reflect you. I am goth, I am a weirdo. I like dressing like a weirdo. I like telling people from a distance. "I'm not unapproachable, but I'm strange so like expect something strange to come out of my face.". I think people would do loads for themselves if they stopped following influencers entirely.
I wish I’d have your confidence 😭
@@user-oq5rm9gi5o
It's not confidence. I'm literally a weirdo. I casually mention death and murder, like...I need people to think I'm an Addams not Patrick Bateman lol.
I love your confidence so much your literally speaking facts I wish more people could hear this!!!!
OMGG FINALLY SOMEONE HAD TO SAY ITT
I understand the vintage/old money/dark academia differentiation as in vintage is like 1800s+ for me, old money is 1950-60s rich folk as seen in movies vibes, and dark academia is specifically for universities in europe is how i would understand it. Even in the pictures you showed they're so different.
As for cottage core and fairy core, well for starters fairies don't have houses, so those people should also live in the woods 😜
At this point i don't really pay much attention to aesthetics at all but sometimes i just whatever i want to wear like dress like a siren or goth or something else like the decades 60's,70's,80's etc or sometimes dress like a fictional character or just my comfy clothes that comfortable to wear
I've been fighting with myself whether to commit to the e-girl look or the coquette aesthetic. I love them both, so yea why not both!
Def go for both. I wanna see e-coquette
Love the video and ik its not really relevant to the topic but Pinterest's idea of Coquette is very inaccurate to what the actual 'aesthetic' is - coquette has been around for at least a decade and has a lot more vintage influences from the 50s and 60s mixed with more traditionally girlish elements, its not just 'pink' like pinterest suggests 😭
(Ik its off topic but I get really nerdy about fashion and types of styles/subcultures like coquette 😭)
No it's not off topic at all that's actually really interesting! I've been kinda hearing the same thing with the y2k aesthetic and that it looked different b4 than how it looks now I wonder how many aesthetics have been changed over the course of time🤔 u actually might have just given me a new video idea
@Kaysaja ur right y2k is another really good example of an aesthetic that's been watered down and changed by tiktok and pinterest, I'd love to see a video abt this topic as I find it rlly interesting!! (no pressure ofc)
Love your hair!!! 😍 So true about all these supposed different types of aesthetics I stopped watching lifestyle content because it eventually became exhausting.

This is a great video! Keep doing you girl! The comedy, and interaction, your personality I loved it all!
Aesthetics are awesome to find inspiration online, but if they transform in another form of consumerism is not that great... they can generate FOMO and low self esteem, expecially in young individuals that feel the pressure to stick completely to a specific aesthetic (I have seen a lot of people don't feeling "enough" because they couldn't afford specific items that aesthetic "required"... and it's pretty sad and concerning).
Anyway, I just found your channel and I'm going to watch all your videos now ❤ you have a new follower :) have a nice day!
The new placement of ring light give a certain natural atmosphere to the shot that ties in to the casual feel of the video. But this is the first video of yours I’m watching so what do I know

The reason it was "unavailable" is because it is a censored search. Certain searches got to gunked up with serial content, so they censored those searches. Typically girlish and more "child-like" styles and such

Let’s go another banger 😂😂😂
While I agree with your overall premise, cottagecore, goblincore, and fairycore are distinct and have different vibes. Fairy wings don’t show up in the first two. Fairycore also has more pinks and pastels and more light materials.
Cottagecore: Undyed/naturally dyed materials, aprons, baking, gardening
Goblincore: Dark colors, less emphasis on tidiness, might collect bones/taxidermy
Fairycore: Wings, pastels, _much_ more likely to involve glitter
it's where you're silly that matters. cottagecore is silly in the countryside, goblincore is silly in the swamp, and fairycore is silly in the magic forest
Honestly, I agree to an extent. While some aesthetics *are* quite distinct from each other (Dark Academia VS. Cottagecore VS. Vaporwave), many of them have themes and elements that overlap until it just becomes redundant. Aesthetics Wiki has SO MANY!!!
I say do whatever you want. If you vibe with a certain aesthetic, that's great! Just don't let yourself feel trapped within it. If you don't care about aesthetics, that's perfectly OK as well, more power to you.
Sorry that it’s unrelated, but YOU ARE SOO PRETTY!! Like I love your hair and your glasses so much girl 😭❤❤
thank you! I really appreciate the compliment u have no idea 😭🫶🏾
feel like i should clarify, im not on tik tok so maybe i don’t know the brunt of it, but i see this phenomenon of many aesthetics as just a way people like to romanticise their interests. i think it’s pretty neutral all around, but you do make a good point about over-consumption. i think some of these are more of a subculture (like cottage core) that then has more subsets within it, similar to how there’s sects within the goth subculture and different versions of goth “aesthetic”. some things like coquette aesthetic are branched off of more defined fashion movements as well which have their own subcultures.
Off topic but I really love your hair, it's so bouncy and curly🥺
first time watching your vids and you already made me laugh in the first few secs
Something that I approach with fashion & style is finding something that will last you and not sticking with aesthetics. I was deep diving into stuff, and a creator I follow actually offers some practical advice: You can dress in any style you want. If you're worried you won't look good in it, try dressing to your body lines (making sure your clothing creates the silhouette you want on yourself) and dressing in a colour range (colour seasons might be an example, not that you need to follow that to 100%) that suits your preferred tastes. Fashion is all about expression if you really wanna dive into it. Aesthetics can be a great tool to help you find ways to describe or explore your personal tastes, but it shouldn't dictate everything you do 100%.
I'm Obsessed with your videos 😂😂😂 hi from chile🇨🇱

Tbh? I am a victime of aestetics, but I didn't drown in them, when I was younger I loved e-girl aestetics, and dressed like that now I'm more in Y2k. But to say what I wanted, most of the aestetics are the same, and peoole don't get it and when pointed out, try to say taht "no, they are different" like... no, I can't do it sometimes xddd this is madness. Yeah I don’t get why people are so crazy about aesthetics, for me it’s just something I can look up in Pinterest and go “omg that’s so pretty”
nuh uh,i love to make an entire aesthetic for just one thing😭
but there's too many my tiny brain can't keep up please for the sake of my sanity 😭
As someone who has had the same "aesthetic" for the past 3 years, and has no idea what the aesthetic is called (its consistent enough to be an aesthetic but idk what it would be called lmfao), the amount of aesthetics is outrageous.
I think it's less about "individualism" (which is ironic, just buy a pre-set of aesthetic items and a whole community bought the same items), and more about trying to feel in control of your life and create your own space. build a house, but in the sense of the current year
6:37 its just a theory, a style theory!!!
I got both clean girl & vanilla girl correct…I think there is something wrong with me 😭
You've just got a much keener eye than I do lol I genuinely couldn't tell a difference
6:07 there’s lore with this one. RUclips won’t let me explain but basically Pinterest had to censor the phrase because of sickos.
ohhh I think I know what ur talking about I seen videos on it coquette and where it originated from and stuff
I think the difference in cottage/goblin/fairy is that it's also about identity and practices. Like while they're all sort of ethereal, cottagecore is about being cozy and homey, goblins are probably nonbinary and have chaotic adhd, fairies are ethereal femmes that love fantasy and dress up. While they'd all live in the woods side by side, they're pretty different types of neurodivergent 😅
It also brings me back to subcultures. Like if you look at anarchopunk, crustpunk and stenchcore, you probably wouldnt be able to tell the difference unless you look at things that are extremely identifiable to a punk for example. Same in metal and goths. But in these cases, it all stems from different genres of music rather than rooted in the esthetic alone
This is seriously the dumbest comment I've ever been exposed to omfg

While I do have preferences in things in some days. Thing is, the kind of visuals I like can vary daily depending on the mood I’m in. Best I can say is, I just go with the flow.
One day, I like pastels if I want to brighten my mood. The next, maybe I like minimalism to calm my senses. Sometimes, it may be coastal/beach themes in hot days for relaxing. Cozy warm browns and beiges in cold days. Dreamcore/Wierdcore is usually reserved for late, quiet nights. Not sure why, but it just fits for me. And dark, classy colors of dark blue and golds for late night going out to dinners.
While ain’t no shame for someone to find their own brand or style. I find it ironic that most of these people are trying so hard to be ‘unique’ , it ends up not being that way anymore. Ironic how in order to not be labeled, they are boxing themselves in.
Only time I actually wanted to go by a specific aesthetic, was when I wanted to try and dress like a fictional character in the most realistic way, and see how much I can get away with it while the style is still obvious who I’m being as.
A few years ago, Once saw a favorite character wearing blue jeans, a green puffy jacket, a magenta beanie and brown boots. So for the winter, I wore the same getup I could try to find and ended up feeling like I was having fun!

I’m guessing it’s kids posting “new aesthetics”, but I don’t know either
Why did I guess them currently
NOW THIS IS THE REAL TEA cuz wtf is goin on?? 😭😭😭😭😭
I hate the fact that anything that is light pink or white is now considered "coquette". Like, I miss the times when it was more like vintage americana, and it's just so annoying how people changed the meaning of the aesthetic and made "coquette" basically a buzzword.
Honestly, the only "Aesthetic" (idk if you can even call it that), that actually does a Good job even though it has plenty of similar looks, would be Gyaru. Instead of making it different and "new" aesthetics with minimal changes, Gyaru considers them subcultures. I genuinely think if there's only a small change or something specific about the sub style (ex. Kogyaru which is worn mainly by high school girls in Japan/based on them) it should be considered a subculture
I say let the people do as they please.
I got the first 2 right!! 100 points
My guesses for the two aesthetics at the beginning:
1- "just a mainstream lifestyle, not an aesthetic"
2- "teen neutral minimalism"
