Um why does no one care about the new Stanley Cups? | A rant on Micro Trends and Consumer Psychology

  • Remember how Stanley Cups were the biggest craze a few months ago? Well not anymore apparently. The newest cups they came out with aren't getting nearly as much hype as the Valentine's Day ones. In fact, no one even really knows about the newest cups they released. They aren't flying off the shelves like before, there aren't any outrageous lines, and no one is even fighting to the death over them anymore. It's clear that they've lost popularity, but why? And why in such a short amount of time? Well, I am going to dissect all of the things that I think Stanley did right about the Valentine's Day cups, and then pick out the things they could have done better for the new Spring Blue Stanley cup, even though I'm completely unqualified to do both. I am not an expert or a business advisor. I'm just a kid who likes to overanalyze things is all. But you should be taking notes, Stanley.

Wow okay so funny story, while editing this video I actually didn't think it would do that well because I didn't know if ppl really cared about the businessy technical side of things and I thought it would just be annoying to hear me yap😭 but it's one of my best performing vids rn and bringing in a lot of new viewers and I'm slightly confused and don't really understand how the yt algorithm works but whatever. I'm glad u guys enjoyed it anyway.
Also, the comments made me realize things like the lead in the cups as well as the boycotting of Starbucks could also contribute to the downfall of stanley, but I didn't realize these things b4 so just wanted to throw that out there.

i'm sure so many people are having moments where they are realizing they have gotten caught up in other fomo-inducing trends even if it wasn't stanley cups.
btw great vid, well made, you have a wonderful voice & style of explaining your thoughts that's easy to follow with the whole time. the subject is so important like i said, thank you for making this 🧡 you're doing great!

Undergraduate in psychology here, and I think a huge portion of what caused the trend to die down was how much backlash the initial drop for Mother’s Day had. The people who obsessed over Stanley cups are on TikTok and RUclips, and it became a very big trend to criticize the obsession that followed Stanley’s. The original drop was an unexpected boom of popularity and madness, but people came into this recent drop knowing that all eyes would truly be on them and monitoring their behavior. It was even shown in this video, people were going to stores with their phones on trying to see if anyone would misbehave so they could post it. I think it’s also safe to say many people may have been legitimately worried of being harmed for a cup that had all of the issues discussed in this video, which may have contributed to the lack of participation.

Great video, I love your presentation! I think it's probably the best possible outcome that stanley cups are no longer a huge fad the way they were, because now most of the people buying new releases will be those who actually need a new cup or have genuine interest in the brand, and not just people who want to fit in or post about it on social media. Your idea for the abstract flower cups also sounds totally cute!

Also, if I was in charge, coming from a background in illustration with a few years of work in graphic design and marketing , I would have done a springy soft yellow green color to appeal to Gen z and y2k aesthetic as that has remained large for a long while now, maybe one or 2 other colors to go along like a periwinkle blue (more saturation = less calm of the powder blue chosen) , and possibly a saturated pinkish lavender to appeal to the pink crowd, also the combination of these hues = fresh from being on the colder side of colors, and also appeals to older millennials women (big part of their market) who often seem to love spring greens, pinks and purples (from my observations at least, when they are the sort that still enjoy color).
sell and advertise accessories like a little carrier for watertok-ers flavor packets or whatever , bc I think most people who fell into the obsession have realized it may have been over consumption, or a brief obsession, but selling a couple accessories could add an extra draw in, and imply that you can mix and match with the colors ie. showing swappable color lids and straws so you can mix and match and the colors will look very nice fresh and fun together in advertisements= even more appeal.

They’re hard to fit in a backpack and I didn’t want to carry them everywhere. Plus I thought seeing these adults fighting over a cup is silly to me. The negative backlash on social media and the news about lead in these cups which didn’t help. I imagine the employees are relieved that there’s no chaos. But then it’s not good for businesses either. These micro trends are not good for the economy, it means the over supply will just get thrown away.

Honestly, I think that because of TikTok, the previous hype itself was over hyped. I kept seeing people show the same two or three videos and yet like this is a nationwide launch at thousands of stores, but people only had three videos of false wild and out and that just became the narrative that that’s just how it was, but I don’t think that’s how it wasn’t most store, think that probably would happen. This time is more like what it was at 99.99% of stores.

The hype died because tik tok users have the attention span of a gerbil and also because (my theories): 2. they collabed w Starbucks while there is an ongoing boycott against Starbucks, 3. there were viral videos of people fighting over the cops in the winter and now ppl feel corny to stand in line for fear they will be mocked in viral videos, 4. There were viral videos of people showing that their stranley cups rusting, 5. It was definitely a micro trend within a larger micro trend and now that everyone has one it’s no longer exclusive or on trend to have the cup.
They will be fine, company is established long before as you stated… but the peak of the online hype is dead unless they collab w some really big musician or pop star ect.

I work with product branding in interior and this was very predictable to me. Usually when a product goes viral or gets trendy the next trendy will be either a product in the same genre but with different functions or something opposite will get trendy. So when Stanley was very trendy they where very likely to not be trendy next part of the cycle. To benefit from the virality they should have released a different product and used the brand awereness to extend the hype to that product. But that is hard to do in a short span of time.
