My dad used the same green stanley thermos for 20+ years until i finally got him a smaller one (hes retired now, so he didnt need the big thermos anymore) about 6-7 years ago, and its still the only thermos he uses. Stanley thermoses are made to last, they are really good quality, but that should mean you *don't* need 50 of them😂
I feel like having maximum 2 or 3 is fine depending on what size of Stanley you use. You have your one you use and then you have a backup for when you're cleaning your main one (cause it's easier to just let those things drop dry)

Exactly! I also have one (I got it a few months before they went viral) and it’s a great cup. I’m really happy with the quality. However, the good quality is literally the reason you don’t need 50. People are too used to crappy fast fashion items that you can only use one or two times.
OK, so that answers one of my components in the question I posted a moment ago on the same thread. If yeti and other brands are using lead, only to manufacture the seals, if this is considered to be standard practice, and if it poses no danger, unless the seal is damaged, but I don’t understand what people are making a big deal about. It sounds like fear, mongering to me, being influenced to buy something off of TikTok is ignorant, but panicking about some thing without really understanding it is also ignorant. It still comes back to though, the part of my comment where I’m asking how obvious is it if a seal is broken? as long as it’s obvious, and as long as the label warns you about how to know if the seal has been breached, then I don’t see any problem with this practice at all. We use lead, and lots of other nasty chemicals to produce different things, and just because it’s used in the production process doesn’t mean that we’re exposed to it from the finish product. my mother actually works for the EPA, and the stupid things that people do just astonish me. For instance, people throwing away, leaded, crystal glasses, that I’ve been family heirlooms for a long time, glasses, they weren’t even using for wine, which, yes, the acidity of which can apparently expose you to lead in leaded crystal, but people who are literally just displaying them because they’re pretty, and because they weren’t important family, heirloom, suddenly throw them out because they find out their leaded crystal. To me, that is the height of stupidity.
It is the industry standard way these vacuum-sealed insulated stainless steel cups are made. The lead is in a pellet that helps with the sealing process but unless you break the cup open, you aren't exposed to the lead. I don't think the lawsuit will go anywhere. But if it does, then ALL manufacturers of this type of stainless steel cup, not just Stanley, will have to disclose that they are sealed using a pellet that contains some amount of lead. These social media trends are what's toxic and I hope more and more people start waking up and realizing that no one needs as much crap as we see on social media.
This just isn’t Stanley at this point.. it’s literally everything being shoved down our throats by “influencers” and the shop.. it’s out of hand and in 20 years, this world will look terrifying if we don’t slow down as a whole.

Yeah there are so many pretty mug shaped thermos or bottles who are really cute but this is really not the case. Obviously it has to be functional at first, but it's a thermos, you can choose between thousands and they work the same.
The lead is a small disk in the bottom and there is no exposure risk unless you open the covering at the bottom and doesn’t come into contact with skin or the drink. Some other big name cups that have the same led disk
@@IsabellaLanter definitely and none of the cup makers are going to voluntarily do it sadly. Rachloves tested the Stanley against her fav cup, forgot what it was, and the Stanley SUCKED! She put 4 or 5 different brands out in a sunny place on a warm day for several hours. They were the same temp at the start but hers was the only one that was still about the same temp. Pretty sure Stanley was one of the ones that the ice was melting in. I also heard that Stanley was probably going to be replaced by the next new thing very soon. Great coverage of the madness!! ♥️
@@kathleenking47 no, the disc is embedded in the bottom. While it is possible to get it out, it takes a very deliberate act of breaking through the bottom to get it out. The person doing the review and her husband tried to get to it but gave up because it was going to take forever
I have a few stanely cups because as a nurse it can be difficult to find time to refill a smaller cup, HOWEVER, the people rushing stores or stealing the cups is ridiculous. It's literally just a vessel to drink out of. Nobody needs 10 or more of these. I feel bad for having the 4 I have sometimes, but then I remember that I really enjoy the few colors I have, and one is always at my bedside.

4 is not too bad, it's a little much, but reasonable if you take into account dishwashing habits. The problem is when people have 10. Personally, I have 3 bottles (their not Stanley's tho.) I have two sports bottles and one stainless steel insulated flask. The two water bottles works for me because I do judo, and it's easier to have 2 water bottles at a conpetition than it is to have just the one and to try and find somewhere to fill it. In the course of warmup and about 3-4 fights, I'll empty 1 bottle and then I still have the rest of the day to go. The thermos works for when I want something to stay warm or cold. I mean, I once prepared some tea in it to drink whilst I was doing a bird survey and the tea was still really warm 8 hours later. It's a sistema bottle too, so reasonable price, good quality. There's a reason so many kids when I was a kid had sistema bottles and lunch boxes.
Lead is commonly used in vacuum sealed cups such as yetis so as someone who uses a Stanley I wasn't surprised when people started talking about the lead in the cup. It's not in the part of the cup you drink from, so you won't be exposed to the lead through regular use.
I saw a "Come With Me To Sephora" short and what blew my mind was that she brought her HUGE Stanley cup from the mall parking lot inside just to pick up like 5 items to what...maybe take a few sips? The rationale was not there, especially because it was 3x larger than her crossbody that could have easily fit a smaller sized bottle so she could shop hands free.
I mean as a chronically dehydrated person i understand the need to always have a vessel of liquid nearby. Even for a quick trip 10-15 minutes into a store
watertok/flavored water communities actually started by bariatric surgery patients! because they were so limited in drink options, they formed communities around creating different drinks that they could enjoy. i also think it got especially popular in the south because mixed/flavored drinks are really common down here lol

As someone who doesn't use TikTok, I had literally never heard of Stanely cups until saw a few commentary youtubers I follow make videos about them. That just goes to show how absurd these TikTok bubbles can be. Consumerism on social media is wild. It seems like these people's whole lives revolve around who has the newest or the most Stanely cups, while all of that is meaningless to folks like me who don't even know they exist.

When I was in middle school I had a flip phone with no Internet access. One day I got on the bus and a little 3rd grade girl sat down next to me and pulled out a brand new iPhone. She saw my phone and tried bullying me over it. I was honestly appalled by it. This was like 10+ years ago and it's just gotten worse.

Months ago I heard about the lead issue. I did two different types of lead tests on the Stanleys I bought before they became trendy. They were all negative.

The lead is a puck in the bottom of the cup and it can’t be exposed unless the bottom breaks. As long as the button on the bottom of the cup is intact you’re safe.

I hate the “just don’t give into peer pressure let her be an individual.” no. as someone who was bullied relentlessly from 6th-10th grade especially when I was being “an individual”, sometimes just giving into the popular girls demands is a survival tactic. If a name brand stanley cup is what it takes? Fine. Whatever can satiate their horrible selves. Plenty of time for the daughter to be an individual when she isn’t at their mercy.

The lead is in the solder and it is standard practice for every single double wall stainless steel brand. Yes that includes other expensive brands like swell and corkcicle. It's only in the solder sealing the vacuum that's under that circular center button. If any component of the bottom of a stainless steel water bottle comes off, throw it out. However, Hydroflask phased out their lead containing solder in 2012. So honestly I got their 30oz cup that's similar. Now does the fact that it's inaccessible mean they dont have to talk about it? No. But they're only getting the backlash because they're popular; all brands, major and "off", have been doing it this whole time.
I love researching things, but I don’t always have the bandwidth to research everything to death. The way I used to before I had two kids, thank you so much for your informative comment. I found a few others like that in this comment section. It is people like you, and me, when I have time, doing research, That have some hope of making things better. When I first started commenting and reading through these comments, I had a feeling that that other brands probably use lead, and low and behold, I’m being educated by people who have done the research, and my suspicion was correct. Although it is good to know that Hydro flask was able to phase it out, because I’ve been meaning to buy a Stanley style cup, but not that brand, and if there is an option from Hydro flask, especially one that has found a way around using lead, then that would be fantastic. @@vibrant_vision I can confirm that hydroflask listened to their customer base and changed their manufacturing! I actually learned about all this stuff from lead safe mama. Their Stanley style cup is great, I have it in the color Lupine and it’s nice. I think I may also want the light pink color. Not to mention you won’t have to stampede at target to get one!
I am in my 30s and even I catch myself ordering too much stuff. Thankfully I don't have kids, but I understand that parents who buy their kids items so that they won't be bullied at school. As someone who was bullied back in school days, it definetly crushes your kid's self-esteem and self worth.
The fact that cups actually contain led in 2024 is baffling! People at Stanley themselves say that the part that contains led can lead to exposure if damaged! Things get used and eventually damaged so it is quite unsettling to think they literally know it will happen and still don’t do anything about it 😢

What i found out is the son of the guy who created the original thermos/company went on to do financial "things." So, if you've heard of the bank/finance company Morgan Stanley, that's the same Stanley family as the cups.
Apparently a lot of the cups that are like double/triple insulated have lead. It only is exposed when certain parts of the cup breaks. Which makes me want to research aaaalll cups that are insulated.

Im not gonna lie, seeing how crazy some peoples over consumption has gotten makes me so sad. I love nature and animals, and do my absolute best to eliminate all the waste i can (so i don't impulse buy, i only buy things im sure ill like enough to use up, i don't return things, i never do seasonal/trend shopping, i wear clothes until they no longer do their purpose, etc) and i regularly pick up trash in my community, and support companies like 4 Ocean who remove 5lbs of trash from the ocean with every purchase, and they make and sell bracelets made from the trash theyve removed from the ocean. So it just makes me so sad to see people buying 50 water cups when the entire point of using a reuseable cup is to not purchase one time use plastics. Buying a ton of cups defeats the whole purpose. Idk i have a water cup and 2 warm liquid thermoses (a small one and a larger one), and other than that i just have normal cups. I dont get why people need to change their cups like they do their underwear.
I have 1 Stanley cup (it’s a sage green Target exclusive, it’s my favorite color so I was thrilled) that I use daily and I’m so happy with it. It’s the only one I need and even when the trend dies out I’ll still love it. 🥰
Am I wrong for not being that concerned about the lead in the bottle? It's on the outside of the cup, it's not on or near the surface that touches the beverage, the lips, and they have always disclosed that the bottle should no longer be used if the seal on the bottom breaks. It's an industry norm for insulated cups and water bottles, and Stanley is far from the only insulated container that uses lead in the sealing process. I think that this is a situation where, the consumer is not wrong for wanting to know, but also people heard a rumor and took it too far. There are ways that toxic materials are and can be used safely.
But here’s the thing, the idea that everyone deserves to know, is negated by people being idiots when you tell them something, and they don’t understand it. These people do have a right to know, but if they actually did any kind of research, they would already know that there’s lead in that process. What they need to know is that the bottle is dangerous if it gets damaged, that’s enough. I don’t actually blame companies for not putting the word lead right out there, because then stupid crap like this happens, and people panic. I think the average person, falls into one of these categories, not smart enough, smart, but not well educated enough, Smart, but with not enough band with to do research, and so we wind up with people, panicking and throwing away perfectly good items, because they fall into one of those previously described categories. There’s a reason that we tell people things in certain ways, or that we don’t tell them, everything, or not all at once. The information should be there if someone wants to look at it, but, You can’t count on people to use their brains. For instance, man-made, trans fats are a bad thing, the ones where you hydrogenate or partially hydrogenate a vegetable oil to make it more shelf stable. However, there are naturally occurring trans fats in meat products, they don’t work in the same way, and they don’t have the same negative properties, but they are still technically trans fats. And so, if we required, the producers of that meat to put that on the label, people wouldn’t buy it, because they’d be too stupid to understand the difference, or they’d be smart, but not have access to the information, explaining how naturally occurring trans, well, naturally occur, or they would be smart and well educated, but too busy to research to find out the difference, Because life is so complicated these days. When you go to get an x-ray, they don’t put the lead apron over you and say here, here’s an apron with lead in it, but it will protect you from x-rays going where you don’t need them to go for the scan. They’re not lying to you because they don’t tell you, and if you ask them, they would probably be happy to explain to you what it is, why it’s necessary, but if you tell the average person that, then you waste the valuable time of doctors and technicians, Arguing with them, and trying to explain to them that the lead apron isn’t going to hurt them. I’m going to subscribe to your channel because I love this video and I wanna see what other content you have, but I’m wondering, if you don’t already, could you produce a video talking about this exact problem, how people jump on bandwagons fear mongering about information that they misunderstand or incomplete understand? All of the reports and testing that I’ve seen consistently show that the lead is in the solder used to seal the vacuum insulation layer. To get good insulation, many thermos manufacturers use a vacuum layer instead of a gas or foam insulation layer. They form the bottle so that there are two thin sheets of metal with a gap between them and a small hole on the bottom, the bottle is then placed in a vacuum chamber and air removed. Once the desired pressure is reached, the hole at the bottom of the bottle needs to be filled with a material that is resistant to heat and impact while also being able to adhere to the metal the bottle is made of. Some manufacturers use glass, but most ones that market towards heavy use or possibly impact use a solder that often includes a small amount of lead. Unless you’re licking the bottom of the outside of your Stanley cup, you’re not getting exposed to lead.
I have one stanley coffee cup and one of the big ones, for water. I spend a lot of time outside and in my greenhouse, and my daughter gave me the cup so I could have ice cold water even when it’s 90 plus degrees. Both cups are in great shape and I’ve gotten so used to having cold water it’s all I want now. I still can’t imagine having more than a couple, like one is washed and drying so a person could use one more. But walls of them? 10,20,50 cups? That’s insane.
So, I was asking myself exactly how many could reasonable person need, and this is what I came up with. Maybe six? One Stanley style cup, something with a straw and a lid, it isn’t 100% leak proof, but is good for carrying around the house, and especially for sitting next to your bed at night, so you don’t have to unscrew a cap to drink, and therefore it’s better sleep, hygiene, and let you stay more asleep, one blender bottle that is insulated so you can make protein shakes another healthy things on the go, keep shaking them up to stay emulsified, and keep them at a food, safe temperature, and maybe one water bottle, even if it’s only a single walled water bottle for carrying, just that, water, that is really truly leak proof, that you can throw into a bag even upside down, and it won’t leak. And maybe a back up of each of those in case one is being washed or gets damaged, so six. or, maybe eight at most if instead, you use the same bottle for everything, but you want to change out your color or pattern four times a year, seasonally, one for the winter, spring, summer, and autumn. That would seem reasonable, not excessive, and still allow you to change things up seasonally to match. Let’s say your bag, that’s assuming you’re reasonable enough to only change that up seasonally as well. So the most I could come up with was six or eight, I can’t understand having 10 or more, let alone, 50 or more. Sorry, reread my comment, and it was not clear, I meant eight because one for each season, and a back up for each, for when it’s being washed, or if it becomes damaged. But still, six, or eight, reasonable, 10, 30, 50 or more, not reasonable.
As an epoxy tumbler maker and cup collector, I have had a love of tumblers and mugs way before tik tok. That being said I dont chase cups, if there is one I like and I can afford it i buy it. I have certain cups and tumblers for certain drinks. I can also say that lead bullets to seal the vacuum is industry standard and isn't exposed.
The lead is in the sealing dot at the bottom of the cups, it does not touch the beverages, or leach into them! Also, it's the same for relatively any stainless steel cup, not just stanley

To be fair most of the other companies like YETI and Camelback use lead the same way for their cups and tumblers. Right now there's only 3 companies that don't use the lead and that's Hydroflask, Owala, and Klean Kanteen... I find it very odd that right after Stanley got popular 2 months later gets exposed for lead... It sounds like one of the other companies didn't like the competition bought a few of the Stanlet cups, tested them out found the lead and exposed Stanley. Just my theory because I find it very odd that this is happening now. Even more strange that Hydroflask comes out with a statement about their own cups as soon as this happened to Stanley....
I bought an ecovessel after my hydroflask got stolen at a chemistry lab. Even mine has lead but they state that it is often times used for isulation to hold the heat/cold but if the disk on the bottom pops off I can send it for a replacement :). I think the main problem is that the bottom doesnt really protect from the puck at all but idk if there is lead on the other parts as well. Stay safe everyone 🥰
There isn't, several tiktokers have done the at-home testing with the kits and the only place that had a positive result was the broken seal on the bottom where Stanley confirmed the lead was.
Actually yes they *do* have lead but it can’t come in contact with your water or whatever u put in the cup I watched it on the news and actually it also said that it’s normal for the human body to take in tiny bits of lead everyday from the moisture in soil!
Owala is the OG healthcare brand. Best water bottles on the market for years. They have limited color drops. They have a true leakproof tumbler in 30 and 40 oz sizes. Best hot and cold cups I own. Stanley could *never*.
The lead thing is ridiculous. Every stainless vacuum cup has that same bead. I shoot long range rifle competitively - I am around significant amounts of lead and yet never had lead poisoning.
This is why I teach my kids about customization. That cheaper cup that you buy can be customized and still cost less than buying brand then paying for that to be customized. I was never with the crowd growing up and it's ok. There are plenty of other things people bond over that's not toxic for the body and mind.
Also one thing I wanna mention is the stanley brand supports israel. Free palestine and many other countries that are currently being oppressed by israel 🙏🏾❤️
Honestly, I'm pretty sure the likelihood of there being a settlement or an actual lawsuit regarding the lead in Stanley cups is very low. I am a licensed attorney, and I took an entire class on product liability suits like this one. Using lead for vacuum sealed, temperature controlled drinking containers like Stanley cups appears to be an industry standard, and hasn't caused major issues in the past. The lead is only exposed if the cup is damaged or used incorrectly, so I think that if anything comes from this outrage, it will just be a small notice that there is lead on the outside of the cup that could be exposed if damaged. I really think there's no need for a class action suit in this case.

Yes, precisely. I like variety, I love color, but I have rules for myself, for instance, if I want multiple colors of something, my maximum is four, one for each season of the year, and that is all. If someone can really can find themselves to their own self-imposed Framework of decision-making, having a seasonal change out for things like your purse, your bag, your water bottle, and actually make them last longer, if each item is only used for three months every year, if you take care of it, it should last in theory four times longer than if you used it all day every day until it broke or wore out. I can’t do the complete minimal aesthetic where you only have one of each thing, like one place setting for each person, a single water bottle, a single purse, but I think that my system is a fair compromise.
OK, so here is my question. So there is not lead in the actual cup in terms of the internal surface, that contacts your beverage on a daily basis. They say that is used in the manufacturing process for the vacuum seal with the double wall construction. OK, so I would like to know how much lead, And they say that it’s not dangerous unless that seal is broken, so my next question within a question would be how much lead would you be exposed to if the seal were to be damaged? And, would it be obvious that the seal was damaged? So for instance, Any double wall bottle should be discarded if the seal becomes damaged and you can tell that there’s liquid getting in between the two walls, because it can breed bacteria, at bare minimum, so if the cups are safe, unless the seal is damaged, and if it is obvious when the seal becomes damaged, then I don’t actually see a huge problem. Yes, there should be warnings about why you should discard the cup if the seal becomes damaged and the double wall insulation is no longer airtight, vacuum, tight, whatever you call it. Now on the other hand, if it is not apparent, if the seal is damaged, that is, if you can’t shake the empty bottle and hear that liquid has gotten trapped between the two walls of the cup, due to a breach of the seal, the that could be much more dangerous as you could be exposed to lead on a daily basis, without realizing that that is happening. I’ll give an example, glass, water bottles are generally very safe, and they’re pretty resistant to breaking, however, if the rim were to become chipped, it could cut your lips or tongue, but if it’s very unlikely to get chipped, and if it is very obvious when it gets chipped, so you can simply discard that bottle at that time, then the danger is very minimal. However, if there was the possibility that the glass could get, I don’t know I’m just making this up for the sake of an example, micro, cracks, or chips, that you couldn’t easily feel or see, but that could allow tiny bits of glass to be adjusted, or very small, sharp surfaces to cut your lips and tongue, that would be a big problem. To my knowledge nothing like that exist, it was just an example. I also want to know if other brands like Hydro flask use lead in the process of creating their double wall construction? if this is something that is generally considered safe and less damaged, if this is something that most companies utilize, even good reputable companies, then this sounds like a whole bunch of BS. However, if there are better manufacturing processes that can achieve the same result without using lead, if there are lots of other brands on the market that don’t use lead in this process of constructing the bottles to be double wall insulated, then there’s no excuse for the Stanley brand to be using it. But I would need answers to these questions to make a thoughtful decision on just how unethical or not this practice is.

I own one Stanley cup that everyone is hyped over. I will say that when I make an ice water the ice stays frozen I’m not joking for well into the next day so my drink is always cold. I remember when I first got it how surprised I was that the ice lasted so long in them. That’s why I use mine at least
I saw an Instagram post about a mom who had a disabled kid in middle school whose Stanley got stolen. I think it’s so sad that the trend is so important to some kids that they will steal from their classmates that can’t stand up to them. Also the fact that a reusable water bottle is supposed to be good for the environment but people are collecting them like Pokémon cards..

Honestly Im a no waste type of guy myself, if you're not going to use the cups often, put them in the back of the cupboard or something. Its not like people throw out wine glasses because they drink like once a year, why do that for a metal flask that could last at least for such a long time for multiple things?
I have TWO cups, one small and one larger, both are tumbler mugs (one I got for work !) What I cannot understand is having 4+ Stanlies because you only really need ONE maybe two if you really want. My 11-year-old wanted a Stanley Cup for Christmas, funny side story my husband thought she meant like the hockey trophy cup. I was like no babe. But I didn’t know everything about these cups. I almost didn’t even get her one because I didn’t want to use $50 of her Christmas budget on a stupid cup. And I couldn’t even find one. But at the end I had $60 left to spend on her and I found one at Dick’s Sporting Goods so I ordered it. Then I saw how big this cup was, it’s like half the size of her. And since then I figured out what the hell is going on with these cups. I still think it’s ridiculous. But I did find out that if I wouldn’t have gotten her that cup, she would’ve been disappointed with Christmas. Because that was her number one thing on her list. Now I will say she uses it every day so I did get my money worth

Stanley, as a company, has been around for years as a supplier for people who work outdoors or people who go camping or hiking and enjoy outdoorsy stuff. Ever heard of a Stanley knife? My Dad has a level that is Stanley brand. It was just a good down to earth supplier of outdoors/hardware supplies. No fancy colours. They were a pretty successful company. What I would like to know if who started the hype around Stanley products or Yeti products for that matter? Was it the company or an influencer? My daughter has a Hydroflask but she has had it for four years, took it overseas with her when she moved from New Zealand to Scotland. I have a water bottle from an Australian company (I think) called Ela and Earth and a bag from them as well. I'm almost 55 but I take my dog out for a long walk every day. My water bottle doesn't need to be seen. It's not a status symbol. That bag has room for the 1l bottle, and pockets for my phone, cards/cash, sunglasses, sunscreen, passport if I was travelling, poop bags and it's still a relatively small bag that I wear cross body. And I bought it on sale. I have another smaller bottle from Sistema but I found out that I run out of water when I'm walking and then have to find somewhere to refill my bottle which is not always possible when you're out in the bush. I take it when I'm going into town and it's easy to refill. It still gets used.
I like using different water bottles and tumblers. But I am not limited to one brand and do not go with the trends. I have a few Yetis. All of them I gotten either as a gift or at TJ Maxx. Only one I payed full price for. I also use this great one I found at TJ Maxx It has Peter Rabbit on it, which I love, and it keeps my water cold all day and then some. Plus it was only cost $13.

I only have ONE black Stanley cup that I bought at a store that sold the labeledless version for a ALOT cheaper. I like keeping my water cold in it and it makes me drink water throughout the day but I can’t fathom having SHELVES of these cause that is just way too excessive.

Especially with the germs and stuff going around all the time. I think a BPA free plastic one that is less than $10 is fine. If it is lost then it isn’t the end of the world. I just want to point out that the term "hyperfocus" is being misused here. Hyperfocusing is the act of focusing so much on a task that you lose track of everything else going on around you and is something that can be really detrimental to an individual. Just saying "focus" or "obsession" would more accurately describe this culture around stanley cups.

Hyper focus is very frustrating, it can be a benefit, or it can be a detriment, but it refers, as you said, to, focusing intensely, almost obsessively on a particular task, or train of thought, and applies to people who have, for instance, adult, ADD, or ADHD, or similar. Perseveration is different, where someone gets stuck on a particular point, echolalia is where someone repeats a particular phrase or word or noise over and over. I would say obsessive interest might be the best way to describe the phenomenon discussed in the video. Also ignorant over consumerism, but I agree that hyperfocus is not the correct term at all.

My dad used the same green stanley thermos for 20+ years until i finally got him a smaller one (hes retired now, so he didnt need the big thermos anymore) about 6-7 years ago, and its still the only thermos he uses. Stanley thermoses are made to last, they are really good quality, but that should mean you *don't* need 50 of them😂

I feel like having maximum 2 or 3 is fine depending on what size of Stanley you use. You have your one you use and then you have a backup for when you're cleaning your main one (cause it's easier to just let those things drop dry)

Lead in Stanley cups is only exposed if it gets damaged. Yeti cups also have lead, among with others.
OK, so that answers one of my components in the question I posted a moment ago on the same thread. If yeti and other brands are using lead, only to manufacture the seals, if this is considered to be standard practice, and if it poses no danger, unless the seal is damaged, but I don’t understand what people are making a big deal about. It sounds like fear, mongering to me, being influenced to buy something off of TikTok is ignorant, but panicking about some thing without really understanding it is also ignorant. It still comes back to though, the part of my comment where I’m asking how obvious is it if a seal is broken? as long as it’s obvious, and as long as the label warns you about how to know if the seal has been breached, then I don’t see any problem with this practice at all. We use lead, and lots of other nasty chemicals to produce different things, and just because it’s used in the production process doesn’t mean that we’re exposed to it from the finish product. my mother actually works for the EPA, and the stupid things that people do just astonish me. For instance, people throwing away, leaded, crystal glasses, that I’ve been family heirlooms for a long time, glasses, they weren’t even using for wine, which, yes, the acidity of which can apparently expose you to lead in leaded crystal, but people who are literally just displaying them because they’re pretty, and because they weren’t important family, heirloom, suddenly throw them out because they find out their leaded crystal. To me, that is the height of stupidity.
It is the industry standard way these vacuum-sealed insulated stainless steel cups are made. The lead is in a pellet that helps with the sealing process but unless you break the cup open, you aren't exposed to the lead. I don't think the lawsuit will go anywhere. But if it does, then ALL manufacturers of this type of stainless steel cup, not just Stanley, will have to disclose that they are sealed using a pellet that contains some amount of lead.
These social media trends are what's toxic and I hope more and more people start waking up and realizing that no one needs as much crap as we see on social media.

The lead is a small disk in the bottom and there is no exposure risk unless you open the covering at the bottom and doesn’t come into contact with skin or the drink. Some other big name cups that have the same led disk

@@IsabellaLanter definitely and none of the cup makers are going to voluntarily do it sadly. Rachloves tested the Stanley against her fav cup, forgot what it was, and the Stanley SUCKED! She put 4 or 5 different brands out in a sunny place on a warm day for several hours. They were the same temp at the start but hers was the only one that was still about the same temp. Pretty sure Stanley was one of the ones that the ice was melting in. I also heard that Stanley was probably going to be replaced by the next new thing very soon. Great coverage of the madness!! ♥️

@@kathleenking47 no, the disc is embedded in the bottom. While it is possible to get it out, it takes a very deliberate act of breaking through the bottom to get it out. The person doing the review and her husband tried to get to it but gave up because it was going to take forever
I have a few stanely cups because as a nurse it can be difficult to find time to refill a smaller cup, HOWEVER, the people rushing stores or stealing the cups is ridiculous. It's literally just a vessel to drink out of. Nobody needs 10 or more of these. I feel bad for having the 4 I have sometimes, but then I remember that I really enjoy the few colors I have, and one is always at my bedside.

4 is not too bad, it's a little much, but reasonable if you take into account dishwashing habits.
The problem is when people have 10. Personally, I have 3 bottles (their not Stanley's tho.) I have two sports bottles and one stainless steel insulated flask. The two water bottles works for me because I do judo, and it's easier to have 2 water bottles at a conpetition than it is to have just the one and to try and find somewhere to fill it. In the course of warmup and about 3-4 fights, I'll empty 1 bottle and then I still have the rest of the day to go. The thermos works for when I want something to stay warm or cold. I mean, I once prepared some tea in it to drink whilst I was doing a bird survey and the tea was still really warm 8 hours later. It's a sistema bottle too, so reasonable price, good quality. There's a reason so many kids when I was a kid had sistema bottles and lunch boxes.
Lead is commonly used in vacuum sealed cups such as yetis so as someone who uses a Stanley I wasn't surprised when people started talking about the lead in the cup. It's not in the part of the cup you drink from, so you won't be exposed to the lead through regular use.

I saw a "Come With Me To Sephora" short and what blew my mind was that she brought her HUGE Stanley cup from the mall parking lot inside just to pick up like 5 items to what...maybe take a few sips? The rationale was not there, especially because it was 3x larger than her crossbody that could have easily fit a smaller sized bottle so she could shop hands free.

The lead is a puck in the bottom of the cup and it can’t be exposed unless the bottom breaks. As long as the button on the bottom of the cup is intact you’re safe.

The lead is in the solder and it is standard practice for every single double wall stainless steel brand. Yes that includes other expensive brands like swell and corkcicle. It's only in the solder sealing the vacuum that's under that circular center button. If any component of the bottom of a stainless steel water bottle comes off, throw it out. However, Hydroflask phased out their lead containing solder in 2012. So honestly I got their 30oz cup that's similar. Now does the fact that it's inaccessible mean they dont have to talk about it? No. But they're only getting the backlash because they're popular; all brands, major and "off", have been doing it this whole time.
I love researching things, but I don’t always have the bandwidth to research everything to death. The way I used to before I had two kids, thank you so much for your informative comment. I found a few others like that in this comment section. It is people like you, and me, when I have time, doing research, That have some hope of making things better. When I first started commenting and reading through these comments, I had a feeling that that other brands probably use lead, and low and behold, I’m being educated by people who have done the research, and my suspicion was correct. Although it is good to know that Hydro flask was able to phase it out, because I’ve been meaning to buy a Stanley style cup, but not that brand, and if there is an option from Hydro flask, especially one that has found a way around using lead, then that would be fantastic. I am in my 30s and even I catch myself ordering too much stuff. Thankfully I don't have kids, but I understand that parents who buy their kids items so that they won't be bullied at school. As someone who was bullied back in school days, it definetly crushes your kid's self-esteem and self worth.

What i found out is the son of the guy who created the original thermos/company went on to do financial "things." So, if you've heard of the bank/finance company Morgan Stanley, that's the same Stanley family as the cups.
Apparently a lot of the cups that are like double/triple insulated have lead. It only is exposed when certain parts of the cup breaks. Which makes me want to research aaaalll cups that are insulated.

Im not gonna lie, seeing how crazy some peoples over consumption has gotten makes me so sad. I love nature and animals, and do my absolute best to eliminate all the waste i can (so i don't impulse buy, i only buy things im sure ill like enough to use up, i don't return things, i never do seasonal/trend shopping, i wear clothes until they no longer do their purpose, etc) and i regularly pick up trash in my community, and support companies like 4 Ocean who remove 5lbs of trash from the ocean with every purchase, and they make and sell bracelets made from the trash theyve removed from the ocean. So it just makes me so sad to see people buying 50 water cups when the entire point of using a reuseable cup is to not purchase one time use plastics. Buying a ton of cups defeats the whole purpose. Idk i have a water cup and 2 warm liquid thermoses (a small one and a larger one), and other than that i just have normal cups. I dont get why people need to change their cups like they do their underwear.
I have 1 Stanley cup (it’s a sage green Target exclusive, it’s my favorite color so I was thrilled) that I use daily and I’m so happy with it. It’s the only one I need and even when the trend dies out I’ll still love it. 🥰
Am I wrong for not being that concerned about the lead in the bottle? It's on the outside of the cup, it's not on or near the surface that touches the beverage, the lips, and they have always disclosed that the bottle should no longer be used if the seal on the bottom breaks. It's an industry norm for insulated cups and water bottles, and Stanley is far from the only insulated container that uses lead in the sealing process. I think that this is a situation where, the consumer is not wrong for wanting to know, but also people heard a rumor and took it too far. There are ways that toxic materials are and can be used safely.

But here’s the thing, the idea that everyone deserves to know, is negated by people being idiots when you tell them something, and they don’t understand it. These people do have a right to know, but if they actually did any kind of research, they would already know that there’s lead in that process. What they need to know is that the bottle is dangerous if it gets damaged, that’s enough. I don’t actually blame companies for not putting the word lead right out there, because then stupid crap like this happens, and people panic. I think the average person, falls into one of these categories, not smart enough, smart, but not well educated enough, Smart, but with not enough band with to do research, and so we wind up with people, panicking and throwing away perfectly good items, because they fall into one of those previously described categories. There’s a reason that we tell people things in certain ways, or that we don’t tell them, everything, or not all at once. The information should be there if someone wants to look at it, but, You can’t count on people to use their brains. For instance, man-made, trans fats are a bad thing, the ones where you hydrogenate or partially hydrogenate a vegetable oil to make it more shelf stable. However, there are naturally occurring trans fats in meat products, they don’t work in the same way, and they don’t have the same negative properties, but they are still technically trans fats. And so, if we required, the producers of that meat to put that on the label, people wouldn’t buy it, because they’d be too stupid to understand the difference, or they’d be smart, but not have access to the information, explaining how naturally occurring trans, well, naturally occur, or they would be smart and well educated, but too busy to research to find out the difference, Because life is so complicated these days. When you go to get an x-ray, they don’t put the lead apron over you and say here, here’s an apron with lead in it, but it will protect you from x-rays going where you don’t need them to go for the scan. They’re not lying to you because they don’t tell you, and if you ask them, they would probably be happy to explain to you what it is, why it’s necessary, but if you tell the average person that, then you waste the valuable time of doctors and technicians, Arguing with them, and trying to explain to them that the lead apron isn’t going to hurt them. All of the reports and testing that I’ve seen consistently show that the lead is in the solder used to seal the vacuum insulation layer. To get good insulation, many thermos manufacturers use a vacuum layer instead of a gas or foam insulation layer. They form the bottle so that there are two thin sheets of metal with a gap between them and a small hole on the bottom, the bottle is then placed in a vacuum chamber and air removed. Once the desired pressure is reached, the hole at the bottom of the bottle needs to be filled with a material that is resistant to heat and impact while also being able to adhere to the metal the bottle is made of. Some manufacturers use glass, but most ones that market towards heavy use or possibly impact use a solder that often includes a small amount of lead. Unless you’re licking the bottom of the outside of your Stanley cup, you’re not getting exposed to lead.
I have one stanley coffee cup and one of the big ones, for water. I spend a lot of time outside and in my greenhouse, and my daughter gave me the cup so I could have ice cold water even when it’s 90 plus degrees. Both cups are in great shape and I’ve gotten so used to having cold water it’s all I want now. I still can’t imagine having more than a couple, like one is washed and drying so a person could use one more. But walls of them? 10,20,50 cups? That’s insane.
So, I was asking myself exactly how many could reasonable person need, and this is what I came up with. Maybe six? One Stanley style cup, something with a straw and a lid, it isn’t 100% leak proof, but is good for carrying around the house, and especially for sitting next to your bed at night, so you don’t have to unscrew a cap to drink, and therefore it’s better sleep, hygiene, and let you stay more asleep, one blender bottle that is insulated so you can make protein shakes another healthy things on the go, keep shaking them up to stay emulsified, and keep them at a food, safe temperature, and maybe one water bottle, even if it’s only a single walled water bottle for carrying, just that, water, that is really truly leak proof, that you can throw into a bag even upside down, and it won’t leak. And maybe a back up of each of those in case one is being washed or gets damaged, so six. or, maybe eight at most if instead, you use the same bottle for everything, but you want to change out your color or pattern four times a year, seasonally, one for the winter, spring, summer, and autumn. That would seem reasonable, not excessive, and still allow you to change things up seasonally to match. Let’s say your bag, that’s assuming you’re reasonable enough to only change that up seasonally as well. So the most I could come up with was six or eight, I can’t understand having 10 or more, let alone, 50 or more. Sorry, reread my comment, and it was not clear, I meant eight because one for each season, and a back up for each, for when it’s being washed, or if it becomes damaged. But still, six, or eight, reasonable, 10, 30, 50 or more, not reasonable.
As an epoxy tumbler maker and cup collector, I have had a love of tumblers and mugs way before tik tok. That being said I dont chase cups, if there is one I like and I can afford it i buy it. I have certain cups and tumblers for certain drinks. I can also say that lead bullets to seal the vacuum is industry standard and isn't exposed.
The lead is in the sealing dot at the bottom of the cups, it does not touch the beverages, or leach into them! Also, it's the same for relatively any stainless steel cup, not just stanley

To be fair most of the other companies like YETI and Camelback use lead the same way for their cups and tumblers. Right now there's only 3 companies that don't use the lead and that's Hydroflask, Owala, and Klean Kanteen... I find it very odd that right after Stanley got popular 2 months later gets exposed for lead... It sounds like one of the other companies didn't like the competition bought a few of the Stanlet cups, tested them out found the lead and exposed Stanley. Just my theory because I find it very odd that this is happening now. Even more strange that Hydroflask comes out with a statement about their own cups as soon as this happened to Stanley....

I bought an ecovessel after my hydroflask got stolen at a chemistry lab. Even mine has lead but they state that it is often times used for isulation to hold the heat/cold but if the disk on the bottom pops off I can send it for a replacement :). I think the main problem is that the bottom doesnt really protect from the puck at all but idk if there is lead on the other parts as well.

There isn't, several tiktokers have done the at-home testing with the kits and the only place that had a positive result was the broken seal on the bottom where Stanley confirmed the lead was.

Owala is the OG healthcare brand. Best water bottles on the market for years. They have limited color drops. They have a true leakproof tumbler in 30 and 40 oz sizes. Best hot and cold cups I own. Stanley could *never*.

The lead thing is ridiculous. Every stainless vacuum cup has that same bead. I shoot long range rifle competitively - I am around significant amounts of lead and yet never had lead poisoning.
This is why I teach my kids about customization. That cheaper cup that you buy can be customized and still cost less than buying brand then paying for that to be customized. I was never with the crowd growing up and it's ok. There are plenty of other things people bond over that's not toxic for the body and mind.
Also one thing I wanna mention is the stanley brand supports israel. Free palestine and many other countries that are currently being oppressed by israel 🙏🏾❤️
Honestly, I'm pretty sure the likelihood of there being a settlement or an actual lawsuit regarding the lead in Stanley cups is very low. I am a licensed attorney, and I took an entire class on product liability suits like this one. Using lead for vacuum sealed, temperature controlled drinking containers like Stanley cups appears to be an industry standard, and hasn't caused major issues in the past. The lead is only exposed if the cup is damaged or used incorrectly, so I think that if anything comes from this outrage, it will just be a small notice that there is lead on the outside of the cup that could be exposed if damaged. I really think there's no need for a class action suit in this case.

Yes, precisely. I like variety, I love color, but I have rules for myself, for instance, if I want multiple colors of something, my maximum is four, one for each season of the year, and that is all. If someone can really can find themselves to their own self-imposed Framework of decision-making, having a seasonal change out for things like your purse, your bag, your water bottle, and actually make them last longer, if each item is only used for three months every year, if you take care of it, it should last in theory four times longer than if you used it all day every day until it broke or wore out. I can’t do the complete minimal aesthetic where you only have one of each thing, like one place setting for each person, a single water bottle, a single purse, but I think that my system is a fair compromise.
I guess I'm to poor to even fathom how one could throw away several expensive, pefrectly fine cups, just to buy more of these cups...
OK, so here is my question. So there is not lead in the actual cup in terms of the internal surface, that contacts your beverage on a daily basis. They say that is used in the manufacturing process for the vacuum seal with the double wall construction. OK, so I would like to know how much lead, And they say that it’s not dangerous unless that seal is broken, so my next question within a question would be how much lead would you be exposed to if the seal were to be damaged? And, would it be obvious that the seal was damaged? So for instance, Any double wall bottle should be discarded if the seal becomes damaged and you can tell that there’s liquid getting in between the two walls, because it can breed bacteria, at bare minimum, so if the cups are safe, unless the seal is damaged, and if it is obvious when the seal becomes damaged, then I don’t actually see a huge problem. Yes, there should be warnings about why you should discard the cup if the seal becomes damaged and the double wall insulation is no longer airtight, vacuum, tight, whatever you call it. Now on the other hand, if it is not apparent, if the seal is damaged, that is, if you can’t shake the empty bottle and hear that liquid has gotten trapped between the two walls of the cup, due to a breach of the seal, the that could be much more dangerous as you could be exposed to lead on a daily basis, without realizing that that is happening. I’ll give an example, glass, water bottles are generally very safe, and they’re pretty resistant to breaking, however, if the rim were to become chipped, it could cut your lips or tongue, but if it’s very unlikely to get chipped, and if it is very obvious when it gets chipped, so you can simply discard that bottle at that time, then the danger is very minimal. However, if there was the possibility that the glass could get, I don’t know I’m just making this up for the sake of an example, micro, cracks, or chips, that you couldn’t easily feel or see, but that could allow tiny bits of glass to be adjusted, or very small, sharp surfaces to cut your lips and tongue, that would be a big problem. To my knowledge nothing like that exist, it was just an example. I also want to know if other brands like Hydro flask use lead in the process of creating their double wall construction? if this is something that is generally considered safe and less damaged, if this is something that most companies utilize, even good reputable companies, then this sounds like a whole bunch of BS. However, if there are better manufacturing processes that can achieve the same result without using lead, if there are lots of other brands on the market that don’t use lead in this process of constructing the bottles to be double wall insulated, then there’s no excuse for the Stanley brand to be using it. But I would need answers to these questions to make a thoughtful decision on just how unethical or not this practice is.

My 11-year-old wanted a Stanley Cup for Christmas, funny side story my husband thought she meant like the hockey trophy cup. I was like no babe. But I didn’t know everything about these cups. I almost didn’t even get her one because I didn’t want to use $50 of her Christmas budget on a stupid cup. And I couldn’t even find one. But at the end I had $60 left to spend on her and I found one at Dick’s Sporting Goods so I ordered it. Then I saw how big this cup was, it’s like half the size of her. And since then I figured out what the hell is going on with these cups. I still think it’s ridiculous. But I did find out that if I wouldn’t have gotten her that cup, she would’ve been disappointed with Christmas. Because that was her number one thing on her list. Now I will say she uses it every day so I did get my money worth

Stanley, as a company, has been around for years as a supplier for people who work outdoors or people who go camping or hiking and enjoy outdoorsy stuff. Ever heard of a Stanley knife? My Dad has a level that is Stanley brand. It was just a good down to earth supplier of outdoors/hardware supplies. No fancy colours. They were a pretty successful company.
What I would like to know if who started the hype around Stanley products or Yeti products for that matter? Was it the company or an influencer? My daughter has a Hydroflask but she has had it for four years, took it overseas with her when she moved from New Zealand to Scotland. I have a water bottle from an Australian company (I think) called Ela and Earth and a bag from them as well. I'm almost 55 but I take my dog out for a long walk every day. My water bottle doesn't need to be seen. It's not a status symbol. That bag has room for the 1l bottle, and pockets for my phone, cards/cash, sunglasses, sunscreen, passport if I was travelling, poop bags and it's still a relatively small bag that I wear cross body. And I bought it on sale. I have another smaller bottle from Sistema but I found out that I run out of water when I'm walking and then have to find somewhere to refill my bottle which is not always possible when you're out in the bush. I take it when I'm going into town and it's easy to refill. It still gets used.
I like using different water bottles and tumblers. But I am not limited to one brand and do not go with the trends. I have a few Yetis. All of them I gotten either as a gift or at TJ Maxx. Only one I payed full price for. I also use this great one I found at TJ Maxx It has Peter Rabbit on it, which I love, and it keeps my water cold all day and then some. Plus it was only cost $13.

I only have ONE black Stanley cup that I bought at a store that sold the labeledless version for a ALOT cheaper. I like keeping my water cold in it and it makes me drink water throughout the day but I can’t fathom having SHELVES of these cause that is just way too excessive.

I don't know or understand what a Stanley cup is or have any desire of owning one.
And no kid needs a Stanley. They will get beaten around and damaged before the school year is over. I work at the elementary school level and a handful of kids have one. When I was a kid we weren’t even allowed water bottles at school and had to drink out of fountains. Now while, I like kids having water bottles, I don’t think they need a brand name. Especially with the germs and stuff going around all the time. I think a BPA free plastic one that is less than $10 is fine. If it is lost then it isn’t the end of the world. Have you seen the middle school teacher in California who lost her Stanley cup and put out posters around the school to try to find it? She never did and eventually someone bought her another one. It’s sad.

I just want to point out that the term "hyperfocus" is being misused here. Hyperfocusing is the act of focusing so much on a task that you lose track of everything else going on around you and is something that can be really detrimental to an individual. It's not simply an extreme focus - I think it's important not to co-opt terms that neurodivergent and mentally ill people need to describe their symptoms and experiences. I know not everyone feels the same way about it, but I'm not downplaying the absurd actions of those participating in this culture around stanley cups. Hyper focus is very frustrating, it can be a benefit, or it can be a detriment, but it refers, as you said, to, focusing intensely, almost obsessively on a particular task, or train of thought, and applies to people who have, for instance, adult, ADD, or ADHD, or similar. Perseveration is different, where someone gets stuck on a particular point, echolalia is where someone repeats a particular phrase or word or noise over and over. I would say obsessive interest might be the best way to describe the phenomenon discussed in the video. Also ignorant over consumerism, but I agree that hyperfocus is not the correct term at all.
I bought a knock off stanley from TikTok shop and honestly it works just the same as the actual cup so I at least saved money 😂 but I could never own a whole collection of cups or go crazy at the store over one
