Brandy Melville: The Most Basic Brand With The Most Loyal Fans | A Look Into Value Perception

  • A documentary about Brandy Melville came out earlier this year, and although I haven't watched it/ I wasn't familiar with the brand until just recently, I was still curious as to the controversies of the brand. And after doing the research, I was surprised to see how many things they were under fire for. And yet, they're still a successful brand with millions of loyal shoppers worldwide. So when I looked into what they sell, it's really nothing special. It's your average teenage hotspot for trendy clothing that you could literally get anywhere. So what's the allure? What's so amazing about this brand that customers are willing to overlook the MANY horrible things the brand has done, even though they could get similar clothes elsewhere? Today I, once again, analyze a brand from a business perspective to find out what Brandy is doing right to keep their fans loyal, and it's the popular marketing tactic of raising "Value Perception". This was all pretty interesting to me, and hopefully it will be to you too.

    As a reminder: Burlington, Ross, and the like sell specifically lower quality/purposefully separate lines of Polo, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, etc. They’re legitimately from the designers but they’re made specifically for those stores. There are the random bits like super crazy sneakers that might pop up, but there’s a definite quality difference. Like I’d say the vendors and stores that represent the levels of the brands would be: Ross, Outlets, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth.

      Ahh that's interesting I thought they just gave those clothes aways cus they didn't sell well I never even noticed a quality difference in the brand items but then again I don't really shop luxury cus I'm too broke for it lol

      That makes sense, there are a lot of brands that are semi-high end but still realitively accessible to middle class people, but then they also have some items and lines that are SUPER high end and ridiculously expensive to appeal to the types of people that only thinks a brand or item has value if the singular item is multiple thousands of dollars. Like the people who won’t buy anything that doesn’t have a 4 or 5 digit price tag because then that would be “cheap” I guess.
      I mean it’s hard to imagine people actually think like that but it makes sense brands would have multiple levels and tiers of items.

    • @JustaFairyStory
      @JustaFairyStory 2 месяца назад +9

      I know there’s also the growing trend of people searching for brand name items at those stores and then re-selling for higher prices, essentially preying on other people and getting them to pay for the name. So learning that those items don’t actually have that high a perceived value from the designers themselves makes that even worse.
      I get times are tough and people are in the grind. There’s nothing wrong with reselling things you don’t use but buying things just to make a profit on it despite not putting any of the work into the item comes off as super sleazy to me.

    If something/someone cultivates a reputation of being good/desirable, people will mindlessly want it too. It has a lot to do with cultivating an instagram/social media following, selling their products as a lifestyle. Like the Stanley Cups and whatnot, people associate those products with influencers and a desirable lifestyle. On an unconscious level, they want it because other people want it.
    Shein and other fast fashion labels suck, too. Social media fuels overconsumption.

    its a type of symbolic self-completion theory, " i buy brandy therefore im skinny/ apart of the in-crowd". you can buy the same thing in a forever 21, but anyone can shop in a forever 21. we shop this "exclusivity" to build ourselves up, we want the image the item/brand gives us. that being said it can be applied to almost anything, ironically lots of "alternative" sub-cultures fell flat on their faces with it in recent years, "you're not apart of this sub-culture if you don't *purchase* x things", "Im alternative because i have this and this." yet the culture is a set of beliefs and not purchasable; you can't buy culture.

    Ok I'm definitely a coquette girly, I've been in love with the aesthetic for years (not the gross parts, I'm a chubby lesbian black woman who will actually d1e if one more old man flirts with me on the bus and actually really enjoys my body type) and I like the look of some brandy melville clothes but like, their whole store is kind of a joke to me lol. I don't think I've found anything my size from there but I also have literally never looked. If I'm gonna support an evil mega corporation there are multiple places I could get the same top in my size for MUCH cheaper. It's the same reason I don't rlly shop at like, kohls, like why would I spend 40$ on what is essentially a plain white t shirt. I can go anywhere else and buy a better version of that for 10$ or less. And if I'm gonna buy an expensive luxury item, I'm either gonna get it from a small business/ethically sourced place or at least only get something from a company I know makes quality products that won't break in two weeks. All their shit comes from the same sweatshops and ends up in the same landfills, I'm not paying the price gouged amount for a label that's not even actually high-end.
