How did you go about tuning it/which ecu did you have, my friend has a 5sfe celica and i wanna help tune it, but i dont know if you can do anything to the stock ecu
Hey, I’ve just gotten a 1990 ST184 celica with the 5sfe. I’m looking at doing stock intake porting and later down the track; a full AF exhaust. You mentioned in another comment that you use the stock ECU, is there anything that needed to be tweaked on the ECU? This is the first EFI car I’m gonna tune and the whole computer thing is very nerve wracking
I love the 5s even on stock performance they sound aggressive in mid range rpm. They have ok reliable power but they need to be on a light chassis otherwise there power to weight ratio kills their performance. Great engines regardless, strong as fuck.
turboing your mr2?? i hope you got deep pockets. to do it right it's costly. had budgeted 8k i was way under budget. but i also bored mine out.40 and stroked it for better torque, and it sounds much better than your typical 4 cyclinder. all in all payed 4500 for mine and i got close to 14k in upgrades and still not done. ohh and it took me 4.5 yrs to get it running.got a few videos up, hey good luck on the build your going to need it.
I am not an expert, however from what I have read in the groups and forums, at that level of power you are going to be doing a bit of work to any engine. Better headgaskets, head bolts, aftermarket ECU, and a bunch of other work.
I thought they may be Webcams! Id love to get some myself but they only have direct phone number contact I believe. I live in Australia so that'd be an expensive call. I've been asking a few buddies in the community to be middle men for me but no one has seemed too eager on it so far. Was the process to get the 294 grind: send them stock cams, they weld and grind and then send them back? Do you remember the total cost? Thanks for your time
$1000 seems reasonable. My situation is I have a toyota celica with a 5sfe and the stock ECU isn't tuneable so if I were to get new cams id need to spend the money on a new ECU also. Which isn't an issue, but I plan to import an ST205 GT4 celica next year and the money id spend on cams/ecu and tune would go much further being put into the 3sgte. Ill be keeping both cars anyway, so I'm sure ill eventually go ahead and do this final thing for my slow daily girl, I think she deserves it. Which ECU would you recommend?
I don’t know which ECU to suggest. I am researching that right now myself. I did not have to tune my stock computer. I took out the old, put the new in and off I went.
Yo what, a camry makes that power stock of the same generation so either you got no gains from modding or an mr2 with the 5s fe in it literally makes less power stock than a camry which i fins hard to belive
The exhaust manifold bolts on. Same bolt pattern. You will need to route oil and coolant to the turbo. You will need to source the intercooler and pipes. You will need to figure out a way to control the spark. If not you will bend a rod. To many people have tried to to make it work with out and fail every time. Max boost would be around 5-8 psi on stock internals.
I am hoping it will be good. I have limited experience with turbo cars and I really like my N/A engine. It could be a case of not knowing what I am missing.

Didn't know the mr2 sw20 even came with a single cam interesting to know
@@carguynewb7856 it didn’t come with a single cam. All were double over head cam
@boofighter so the toyota camry and rav4 from the 90s also had a dohc?
So the 5sfe is nothing like the 3sfe
Just got my mr2 and trying to figure things out....keep this up...I subscribed because your videos are very interesting...
+Manuel Fuentes thanks.
If you need any advice, I’ve had one for a few years so ask away
+Daniel Meeraz thank you.
Why is it that the 5s sounds slightly like an ej20
I never noticed that. Interesting observation.
What were the upgrades? how much difference did it make? I have a 1998 Celica 5sfe and I'm definitely interested in custom timing.
I believe I listed them at the start of the video.
How did you go about tuning it/which ecu did you have, my friend has a 5sfe celica and i wanna help tune it, but i dont know if you can do anything to the stock ecu
By tuning it, all I did was play around with the distributor. To actually “tune” the ECU you need to have an aftermarket one.
Nice. Still need to Dyno The MR2. Going Coil On Plug first.
+GoProErthang thanks, it was a cool experience.

I never touched the ecu.

What did you think about the hub dyno? I’ve never used one before.
This was my first ever time putting a car on the dyno. I think that I was happy with how it went.

+Full Throttle I have watched a few of your videos
boofighter right on love watching other mr2 builds and some honda builds as well.
Wow, $14K is a lot of money but I am sure that's not all in the engine or am I wrong?
The Marsh about 8k in the motor
So how much power does it make now? That price is so high it makes wonder how strong the engine is and how much abuse can it take?
Cant hear anything how much hp did u do
125
Is that the standard cams that u had regrind?
Yes.
I also have the '91 mr2 5sfe but idk what mids i can put i wanna get about at least 400HP on it
You will need to do an engine swap to get 400hp. Sorry.
@@therealboofighter that's fine with me actually i don't mind that at all i have a stock engine.
David Rosabal yeah, the 5s is a fine engine for what it is but is not a good platform for high HP builds.
@@therealboofighter what engine is best for it?
I am not an expert, however from what I have read in the groups and forums, at that level of power you are going to be doing a bit of work to any engine. Better headgaskets, head bolts, aftermarket ECU, and a bunch of other work.
Hey man, what brand cams? Or grind I should ask
The brand is Web Cams. The grind is 294.

You are correct. I think all in it was around $1000 Canadian.
Just to be clear, this is for the 5sfe engine

125hp at the wheel or crank?
Wheel
Well, hub, if you are going to be exact, since this is a hub dyno and not a rolling drum.
what turbo kit are you going with? i just got a 92 sw20 and i’m looking to turbo it
I am planning on using the 3sgte turbo.
@@therealboofighter so you can just use the 3sgte turbo manifold and other parts on the 5sfe??

@@therealboofighter that is so helpful thank you!
I am going to see what I can get out of the engine with out a turbo first. If you check out my latest video you can see what I am doing.
Is a 5sge 2.2L engine rwd?
In the MR2 it is. In the Celica it’s front wheel drive. In the RAV-4 it can be front wheel or All Wheel drive.
Thank u, I’ve looked all over the internet for this anwser
The engine code is 5sfe
Is this on the stock ECU?
Yes.
Not bad for a 5sfe with some mods.
I was happy to make at the wheels what the stock engine was advertising at the crank.
Are you still planning on turbocharging it
Yes, I have been procrastinating though.
Its a big job but will be so much more fun than NA. I’m working on building the other 5s motor still. Just got too many other things to do right now
I am hoping it will be good. I have limited experience with turbo cars and I really like my N/A engine. It could be a case of not knowing what I am missing.
did it have enough power to turn the dyno wheel?
Good luck with the build, bro!
I put down a blistering 125hp!
My mate recons his 5sfe na makes 280hp🤣 can you confirm that’s cap
Well, I don’t know what is in his setup, but I would say that it would be very unlikely to be hitting those numbers. Unless HP stands for horse poop.
Stop beating around the bush and go turbo. You'll then unleash the power of that 5SFE
Perhaps one day.
my camry makes more power no way
@@ItsPainnz that may be true, but you’re still driving a Camry. 😉
