The reason we can't have that emotional experience anymore isn't just because the game lost its touch (which is definitely has), but the sole reason it was such a phenomenon was because it was a virtual social hub with a side of fantasy rpg. What I enjoy from vanilla wow is the journey it took me to level my character up and getting to know all these areas, that was the most fun for me. I play retail until the story is done and then I basically quit. I wish they added more world content and by this I do not mean worldwuests but just more areas, more exploration. Getting a random green from opening a chest or killing a rare man, that was so good. Currently in wow you just get bombarded with blue and purple items for just talking to npcs, it is boring leveling is so fucking easy.

    • @Darthmerl77
      @Darthmerl77 Год назад +1

      The experience you have playing the game expresses to me, that you are one person playing the game, a loner. MMO's are based on the players who want to experience the game with others, who may share the same interests. Let me tell you something, you can not make everyone happy, long enough, in the game. My fun in the game is experiencing the game with others who share the same goals as I do. I know I can play alongside these individuals; because they are great people to be around with. As a leader of a guild, you have to decide what to do with the time that is given to you to do, for them. Finding good players is easy. Getting them to communicate, coordinate, collaborate & work together as a team through some team speaking app, is the challenge. No matter what happens, what pain we face, and in death, the Wheel keeps turning. Always.
      Sad will be the day when every man is absolutely content with the life that he is living, with the thoughts that he is thinking, with the deeds that he is doing. When there is not forever beating at the doors of his soul some great desire to do something larger, which that he was meant and made to do.

    Classic is nice because you start as a nobody and as you level you truly feel like your character is developing. The fact that you’re a random citizen of your capitol city who is now forced to get stronger by fighting wolves, raptors, panthers, etc. Every piece of gear makes you truly feel like you’re growing in power. And eventually you get strong enough to take on monsters, elemental lords, dragons, and more. It’s true rpg.
    Retail starts you as a god. Being able to pull 20 mobs and wreck them easily. You get everything handed to you. There’s no reason for community. BOA gear makes obtained gear feel like nothing. You get a free mount right off the bat. No true rpg elements imo.

At the same time, you have the the fact that MMORPG simply isn´t that overly popular that it was 15 years ago. Back during 2004-2010 WoW was a massive phenomenon because there weren´t any real alternatives and the genre was super popular.
      Now-a-days you have the league of legends, fortnites etc that draw alot of players.

On that private server I was playing on, you could make a name for yourself, especially when it came to pvp. And Alliance and Horde were beefing 24/7 always fighting each other over turfs or invading the main cities. You could literally organize raids by yourself with random people without being in a guild, and you could also organize pvp parties with no problems. Not to mention that there were always discussions on the forums about who's the best hunter or warlock or tank on the server etc. When I came to retail everything kind of felt lifeless. 15:00 Exactly this. I hope to God they do this. They need to spice things up for all the people spamming multiple hardcore chars learning and mapping all the safe and best paths. It takes the thrill out of it. Ignite the MMO and change the mob pathing - add a few random elite rares around the world and buff the mobs like Asmon said so the people expecting it to be the same classic to be reintroduced to the true classic hardcore. They could make it feel like a whole new world which is the most important aspect for an MMO. It could ignite a whole new genre of WoW if they do it right. Don't just copy off the players add and build off it - billion dollar franchise after all.

    Classic WoW really felt like an adventure it also forced you to interact with other people, both Horde and Alliance in a way that really emphasized the MMO part of MMORPG. You spent most of the time walking until you got a regular mount at 40, but even then it forced you to actually interact with the world rather than just flying over it. Quests were difficult, leveling was SLOW, STV was a nightmare of ganking plus the size meant that especially at lower levels you often died making it feel exciting. Later WoW felt like an RPG that happened to have an online component. They speed leveled you through so all previous content and zones became obsolete, they added a ridiculous amount of races, mounts, armor, etc. etc. Before it felt exciting and like an adventure last time I played it felt goofy and lonely.

    2:28 Asmon, I relate too much to what you say here. I've always been a WoW fan, probably since I was a kid, but never had the money or the courage to join the community. When Corona hit, I had nothing better to do than try WoW (I've played it before on various private servers, but didn't feel like it should) so I took a shot to try retail. My first impression was out of words, couldn't even grasp the huge world that I had yet to experience catching up with the previous years I was playing on private servers. I played for approximately 2 years until I got burnt out. I'm almost in my 30s with a white-collar job and a wife, I do game from time to time, but what you mentioned there about being fast-paced, complicated, and getting more and more difficult is what hit deep into my heart. It's been over a month since my sub expired and I decided not to continue, at least for now. My pleasure it's to enjoy every single bit of existing pixels, but I feel rushed up, forced by the masses to hit the end game and be part of the elite (which I never intended to nor tried). I will compare here two other games that I play on a regular basis, Modern Warfare 2 and Hell Let Loose. One it's a fast-paced, energy-draining shooter, and the other one it's a strategic WW2 simulator that requires tactics and patience. There you have it, retail vs classic. Maybe for some people, the new patches lack activities or content, but for me, they're way too fast dropped and by the time I get to enjoy some new mechanics, they're already obsolete and I'm 2 updates behind already. Make this game more enjoyable by taking away the dumb-down mechanism. (Yada-yada, go play classic, yada-yada) Really want to play Dragonflight with less complicated tricks, that's just it.

    Alow the lvling to be as slow as classic imo for people that want it. Lvling is still fun because of the experience, it was nice wandering around (the newer features like not having to pay for a flying mount also help alot because you can just move on with the experience).
    Reducing the amount of servers and allowing for cross-faction content for raiding might help.
    Plus there´s the constant factor that will just get worse each expansion which is the increasingly bigger and bigger world. Right now, if you are a new player and you want to lvl you can lvl in kalimdor, eastern kingdoms, outland, draernor, pandaria, zandalar, shadowlands...there is like 5000 zones, for returning players it might be w/e, but for newer player it makes sense for the player to experience all of these expansions (if there was an actual sense of story progression..)
    EDIT: I do also agree that in earlier expansions, doing low lvl dungeons for more than just experience but for gear felt alot more rewarding because you could feel the difference in the world with lvling becoming easier which is missing.

This was the longest time I had not played Wow at all. I logged into my character and first thing I saw was that my bags were full of shit and I have no idea anymore what any of this is or if I can throw it away. The new UI creeped me out and I still hate it. Leveling on the dragon isles was very fun but now at max level I'm very overwhelmed. So many currencies, factions and collectibles. I don't know where to start or how. I used to love collecting mounts (got the 400 achievement just before quitting) and seeing the hundreds of new mounts which I have no idea how to farm all stresses me out tbh. I always loved collecting in Wow but this is just too much. I also got a taste of how it must be like to be a new player. I leveled a character from 50-60 via dungeons with my sister and we got shit on all the time because we didn't make as much dps as the others (I didn't read a guide yet I just wanted to play) and didn't know everything. The tanks and healers also got shit on all the time if they made just 1 mistake and many people left the group after 1 wipe. I don't remember people being *this* hostile in the low level bracket. The bloated content combined with the rude playerbase it doesn't surprise me that new players don't stay for too long. I will still play a bit though until it gets too boring or too much.

    Shortcuts is what happened to WoW. Shortcuts to leveling, to making gold, to complete raids/dungeons, to finding groups, to traveling the world. I think thats the main problem. You must have to invest the time to achieve things was the heart and soul of WoW which was destroyed by shortcuts.

    i disagree with a lot of what he said. DF is the best expansion to date. The mythic affix tweaks going to make S2 mythic plus a lot more enjoyable and what was annoying is gone (for the most part) the Raid fights in vault were not very difficult IMO and had decent encounter design. Dragon riding is fucking awesome. Im used to having it so much that NOT having it going to old world feels bad but I see this as a permanent feature by the time DF is over. I did not do PVP so I can't speak for it but the story and questing all felt nice/fun. I have time for few hours each night so maybe not playing 8h/day is preventing me from getting burned out.

    I am someone that never played wow back in the day; the first time I tried wow seriously was during the login campaign during the wow movie, and I only started playing the game more at the tail end of Legion.
    I can say with 100% honesty that Classic Vanilla, TBC and Wrath have been WAY more fun than retail, and Classic HC has been even more entertaining. it's not just nostalgia

  • @nulltheworm
    @nulltheworm Год назад +2

    11:00 - It's not just nostalgia for "the way things used to be."
    A lot of older MMORPG games, perhaps World of Warcraft most of all, had a fundamental change in design philosophy that affected new and old players alike.
    In making the game too easy to grow in and too easy to attain max level, game developers made it too difficult to "get into."
    Or maybe better stated a different way: in making it so easy to level up and hit max level, game developers made it too difficult to care about your character and the world that you're supposed to feel a part of.
    So, when you hit max level in Classic WoW, you feel like you did back in the day when you hit max level. It took time. It took patience. It took cooperation with other plays. You had to learn, and grow, and figure things out. You were challenged. Other players helped you out, and you helped them out. You got to feel a part of a larger world, meet more characters, hear more tails of the legendary lore characters of the game, and so on. In modern WoW, you can get from 1-60 or even 1-70 in just a couple of days as a new player. And you'll be referred to be all sorts of titles along the way: "Champion," "Maw Walker," or even simply "hero." But it all feels hollow, because you never accomplished anything, and you never really felt like you were a part of the world over those 50, 60, 70 levels.
    In Vanilla, TBC, and Wrath Classic, I went through dozens and dozens of different regions, towns, cities, and dungeons just to get to level 50, another several to get to level 60, another several to get to level 70. And I felt like I was in a 'real' living world, that my character's actions and growth mattered, and that the people I met/helped along the way were a part of this story too.
    I don't give a damn about my modern WoW characters, because they're just sitting at max level having not really done anything except for just my first character. And even then, I only marginally feel more a part of the world. (Having started in BFA content right as Shadowlands launched as a new WoW player.)

      You quite obviously cant use multiple ranks of a spell at 1 time. You train multiple ranks of the same spell but only use the rank in which you place on your bar. Like why would you even place multiple ranks of the same spell on your bar hahah
