Sound design was so good back in the early years of the game. You could hear every little grass moving, every footstep, every breathing, every little detail.
Nowadays everything is drowned out by deafening music, or background noise, or your own character grasbing for air for no fucking reason.

Well people call them DbD like because everyone thinks this type of games copy from DbD like Identity V,Evolve ,Home Sweet Home or Friday the 13th but it's not actually true

    • @Wanderer_of_Sol
      @Wanderer_of_Sol 3 года назад +5

@@moonwalking_sir9662 My problem with calling it asymmetrical horror is that it's too vague. Like, there have been several of Asymmetrical horror games before dbd, but they weren't like dbd in gameplay. And there still are lots of asymmetrical horror games that are nothing like dbd.
And there are games very much like dbd that aren't horror at all. Like, I was joking about Tom and Jerry Chase, but it's mechanically a 2d platformer dbd. But it's sure as hell not horror, so we can't lump it into the asymmetrical horror genre. Do we just call it a dbd-like?
Personally I don't really like giving dbd a whole genre named after it, and I feel like X-likes are kind of over played. Roguelikes became a thing because Rogue was the best of it's genre and really defined it, even if it wasn't the first. dbd isn't the "best" by virtue of quality, so much as it's "the longest surviving". I feel like a better game might come along when someone does what Jund says in this video, and we'll look back on dbd the way demons/dark souls fans look back and go "Holy shit King's Field was a mess!", and the genre will be defined.
Until then, I think cat and mouse is a great descriptor for dbd, and many other games that follow it. And you could define dbd as a "horror cat and mouse", and I think that would fit fine. But cat and mouse fits really any back and forth chase game, regardless of the visual aesthetic.

For me, the 2 big reasons why i sunk 2k hours into the game eairler on was the innovation of killer concepts, and the overall better community back then as compared to now.
I started playing the day it came out on console, but i had watched a ton of videos and streams of people playing prior to that point. Seeing killers go from pretty basic "run after survivor, hit survivor with swing/chainsaw" type gameplay, to where doctor came out and has a sort of AOE affect (ik not really but it was the first of its kind), then huntress had the first ranged attacks, etc, really drew me in. I was always excited to see how far they could push the basic concept of "chase survivor and hit them".
And then there was the community, which was BY FAR 100× BETTER THAN CURRENT DAY. I played a lot of survivor and would always sit at rank 1 (not a brag, i get it isnt THAT hard, but at the time before there was a lot of tutorial type stuff for people to actually learn in a structured way, it was something worth noting). Id run into familiar faces all the time, it got to where we'd send friendly messages back and forth like meeting an old friend, or meme in games with people we recognized, etc. And at least in my personal experience, a lot of those high rank people just played with some "etiquette" you dont really see anymore. People were more altruistic, t-bagging still happened but not as much as i see it now, not as many people went out of the way to "bully killers" (which the rise of people like no0b3, ayrun, other survivor mains that thrived off that kind of content probably helped popularize), and it just seemed like a lot of people could clearly see the game was unbalanced so people wernt as toxic. Again, thats my personal experience, im sure others have different stories or whatnot, but the community back in the days of like huntress' release was just better imo.

Learning that Resident Evil was coming to the game brought me in. But watching content creators and even coming to appreciate all the interesting original characters has kept me playing. And as someone who use to play LoL a lot, I will say that the typical length of a game in DBD is also a great bonus for a PvP type game. If the match is going bad for you, it's not like it will drag out to potentially an hour long like many games of LoL can. It's over relatively quickly and you can move on to the next game.

I think the simplicity is one of the biggest factors. During Mclean's streams he talks about it a lot. How they want perks, powers, killers, and UI to be as simple as it is possible to be, and using the least amount of buttons possible and that idea is at the core of their design. I tried to watch a HSH:S stream and was immediately confused at what was happening, what the goal was, what the player was doing. DBD on first watch is simple "Oh, they did a generator, the number went down" That simple progress is very easy to immediately grasp and understand.

DbD also has really good visual cues. Without even knowing what generators do, you can tell that you should interact with it as a survivor. Likewise you can easily tell that running to a window may be a safe option when being chased, even if you haven't learned how to loop well. Same goes to killer hooks, etc.

One thing you didn't explicitly say is the diversity of characters (survivors), their characteristics, their lore, even their "exclusive" perks makes us identify with at least one of them. And when you think about survivor horror this is so important, even back then Resident Evil let you play different campaigns with two different characters. They're not you but you can see yourself in them. They could make you able to create yourself as a character but the feeling you're living a story and that are a lot of stories you can "live" help you, the player, to connect with the rooster of characters.

That is the one thing I have noticed aswell while I played HsH Survive for the first time, which is also kind of my main gripe, the killer in DbD always feels powerful to a new player you feel like you are controlling the match and that survivors can fear you, in games like F13 and HsH you have an active defense against the killers and that just removes control from the killer.

As killer learning how a survivor plays just as playing as survivor you learn how a killer plays just kind of like Manhunt mode in Assassin's creed where 4 players were Pursuers (attack/killer) learn how the Targets (defense/survivors) hide; Targets learn how Pursuers moved/hunted

In regards to survivors being able to attack killers, since you mentioned Deathgarden, I just wanted to say that in the Bloodharvest version, Scavengers couldn't attack Killers in that either. The closest thing was being able to shot them with your arrows, which just made a slight dink and a small screen shake, no slow or stun. Could be very annoying, but not dissimilar to a Survivor spamming a loud noise notification in Dbd. Just thought I'd bring that up.

Some good points that I mostly all agree with, but one thing I think was missed was that DBD has a cohesive story that gives their survivors and killers more personality which appeals to "fanatics". You've seen people who "main" a survivor or killer because they like their aesthetic and story, and I think appealing to fanatics that get attached to video game characters with a story is what allows the game to keep players even during its' darkest patches.
The DLCs further compound this by using characters with pre-written backstories that people have already grown attached to.

  • @bingdiggus8579

I think some of the big issues with the "attack the killer" games is that the survivors hold more offensive actions than the killer. My first game of HSH was filled with random stuns, fast survivors, and weird fights. Once I managed to kill a survivor, it got a bit easier but I found out that they come back after a certain amount of time. I think if a game allows survivors to take offensive actions, it should have more risk than rewards. Dead by daylight does this in a much better way than the others because while the survivors can be offensive (instigating chases, flashlights, head on, etc.) they are also bringing a lot of risks on themselves and possibly their whole team. I think other games should reconsider the roles of the killers and survivors, to try to create a more level environment for their playerbase

in friday the 13th yes the survivors in that game can beat up jason but jason can also block to avoid being stunned. and on top of that if survivors just beat up jason too much he will enter rage mode much faster then hes supposed too and he will be completly unstunnable in rage mode from melee attacks with the exception of shotguns (which only 3 can be in a map and most newer players just waste them) and bear traps but they take time to arm. oh and also weapons break often depending on your survivor stats.
