Thanks for the video! We recently bought a 74 Super Beetle and the lever is missing on the driver's side and the barrel nut is missing on the passenger side. Your video is going to be a big help when I get under there to set this all up.
One thing to add--if the engine is already in the car and you need to that triangular, friction-fitting nut on to the heater box stem, it is a tight fit. I taped the nut on a 1/4" 10mm socket, placed it over the heater box stem and used a large screwdriver to wedge the nut on to the stem. It worked. (It is much easier to do this step with the engine out of the car. . . . , next time.)

My levers move less than 1/4 of an inch. Is it possible that something was modified? it just doesnt seem like its moving the flap when the latch moves. It wouldnt move at all with the lever on it so I took it off.
Hmmm... mine move like 3 inches at the lever cable junction. The flap part itself does not move far. I can measure the ratio if you like. Sounds like something isn’t right in yours.
So I'm back....the part at the top that the lever attached to only pushes up and the lever barely reaches. I had my engine rebuilt last summer. Is it possible that the part that moves the flap is bent a different direction? I'm stumped. Both sides are the same way.
I think there is a little cap on the end of the flap shaft. Is that the one you mean? I’d have to crawl under mine right now to see, but I think I remember that.

I used one pair of vice grips to hold the little spring near the gap, then slid it onto the pin, it wasn't too tricky
Stuart Camenson good way to do it. Next time I install heater box levers I’ll try it :)
They sell a cir-clip plier for those little clips. I got one a Harbor freight .
Probably worth the investment! My nearest is 90 miles and I live in the middle of nowhere. Next time :)

I heard that one should do this inside a box or a bucket to keep the clip from flying off into space.

Boy, not sure. I’ll get under mine and look but I think it just grabs the end, just like 1/4 inch.
What "Kit" did you purchase?
Might have been from CIP1. It had the levers and all the clips. The cables were separate.

The levers? No. But the hood heater boxes can be. Try and find good original if you can. Much better heat exchange.
