    I own a '71 Super Beetle, and I have just removed the Fresh Air Box, not to repair it, but to gain access to the Electrics behind. But there was one job that needed doing badly! The Speedo Needle had started to get some jerky movements at lower speeds. With that large plastic box removed, it is easy to undo the Speedo Drive. Then, I lubricated with about 5ml of Singer Sewing Machine Oil, mixed with finely powdered graphite. By gravity, and over a short time, the lubricant will go through the whole cable. So please remember your Speedo Drive!

    Great vid. My 68 had its fresh air system in pieces when I bought it; still working on rewiring. So, once I get to it, I'm going to use this as the template for how my system should be set up.

    Excellent video-the Volkswagen Beetle was a high quality and very enjoyable car when it was built and should not have air leaks, poor heating, or fuel smells as so many of them do-parts like the seals and vents you have covered age, and when you put them back in proper working order, it makes owning and driving a VW much more enjoyable. Not having cold air blowing in on you from the vents and having a working defroster are pretty simple tasks to do right, but are often over looked or improperly done

    While you’re at it, remove your wiper motor and rebuild it! The thing will desperately need cleaning and lubrication. I did mine and was amazed at how much dirt there was and the grease was hard and not doing anything. Now works like new!

    Instead of heating the retaining pins, I just cut them off. I then drilled small pilot holes in each pin and used small large head screws to put the top back on. Works great for future disassemblies.

    Thank you so very much. I now know how to rebuild mine and to where to go to get the foam pads Mine is a '73 and all those lines are off and stuffed up in the corners. Do you know where I can find a diagram to show me what line/hose goes where? Was the large circular seal also from Wolfsburg?

      If I remember right everything came from Wolfsburg. Remember, supers had a different box.

    I have a big problem with my '74 Super. It has a water leaks which results in water dripping to my driver side floor mat. It drips from somewhere around the steering column. I'm guessing those front grills in front of the windshield is to blame. Do you have a solution for this? It is bothering me for such a long time now and I don't want to keep a bucket in the car anymore :)

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  3 года назад

      The air box on the super is similar. Pull out the drain hose on that bottom and make sure it isn't plugged and there isn't debris in the bottom of the box. If it's OK, check your hood seal and make sure there aren't any holes between the hood and the interior of the car. But, your problem might be the windshield seal if it is original. They shrink over time and water gets in. If I drove my Bug in a rain water came in the corners of the windshield. I replaced it and all is well now.

    What are the black plastic corrugated tubes that are on each side of the air box you rebuilt and going behind it? You pointed to one and said you "snapped it". (they are loose in my car under the hood and not connected to anything)

    Hi, here someone that doesn´t know anything about bugs but just got one. Where does that hose drains the water out of the car? The drainage one that you have under the carpet? I do not have those parts on the bug I got, it´s a 1977 model but, the prev. owner removed all of the ventilation system, he just left the fresh air box, so I put some tape to avoid the water getting inside. My idea is to restore all of that back to original. (I do not live in a place where I have to worry about snow, but we do have a lot of rain)

    Good video, but was really wanting to see how to install the vents, what gets clipped into what, firmness, especially how to insert the air/windshield vents. Its a shame, it was all there to show the exact install, but was not included.. I said NOOoooo!

      The passenger vent, how difficult to install around/behind the windshield wiper motor..? - wanted to see that...

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  3 года назад

      I didn't have to do the center on mine. The vent outlets all go in from the top or front, and the vent itself are all in the trunk. I imagine taking out the radio, fresh air box, and wiper motor would make it easier to get to the vent. I had to glue in the left and right vent housings because the double sided foam tape was just gone.

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  3 года назад

      I saw a video where someone used flexible exhaust tubing. It’s metal so it can be worked down in there easier. The hard part is getting all the old paper off.

    • @brianw8963
      @brianw8963 2 месяца назад +1

      It’s not easy, and you cannot use the flexible stainless pipe unless the 1/4 panel is removed on the outside. Get the original 36 mm from Wolfsburg west metric, and it is still a struggle, but doable with patience. As the man said,the hard part is getting the old stuff cleaned off the pipe at the bottom. Took me three days of laparoscopic surgery to do just one side. It will definitely test your patience. 👍👍🇺🇸

    Sorry for the down mate, but you wasted my time. How to get those bl**dy elbows out of the darkness and airtight back into place is of more importance (no information can be found on the web) than stating the obvious someone not clumsy will gather anyway before he lays hands on and those who are should not try anyway... • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  7 месяцев назад

      Are you talking about the ones that come from the heater channels? The only information I’ve ever seen shows people just cutting a hole inside the car to get down there. Then replace them with the stainless steel, flexible, exhaust hoses, 72 mm I believe. That was really not the title of my video, I’m just focusing on the heater box.

Unless you really don't know that the tubes right and left leading to the vents the fresh air box is connected to eventually are called that due to their shape.
