amazing job! been looking 4 scuh a tutorial 4 weeks. Greetings from Germany
Danke! Hope the video will help you. I love Germany, I was at Spangdahlem for 3 years.
Great video. well explained.Im from Canada and worked for a glass company for 18 years. If i may just add two more comments of help to your video when you put the door glass back inbetween the scrapers at the very top of the back chanel that would be closest to back wheel. at the very top of that channel give it a light spray of clear spray silicone to the bottom of channel just before it goes inside the door then you can apply heavy spray down channel to the very bottom ( the silicone will run down the channel ). until you see it just start to drip out. and then same on front channel makes it so much easier to roll up and down and give the gears on the regulater a good dose of lithium grease help keep it lubed. and at the end before the door panel apply a heavy piece of plastic back on the door. keeps any moisture that gets past the scrapers from letting moisture get to the cardboard door panel which can cause a musty smell inside car plus not warp the panel from getting wet and drying out over and over. Hope this helps all you people out
Hey Todd, thanks for the tips. I'll try the silicone. How's the bug scene in Canada? I'm a big Rush fan. 😁
Lots of experience in manoeuvring items out and back in, thank you for the details.
Thanks Shadi. I've done a few of them. 😁
Suggestion ; you mentioned adding the 3 clips from the old scraper to come up with a total of 7. If you have a really old OEM scraper like mine it had 7 clips so I decided to take out the new clips and use all the old 7 clips. I almost made a BIG ERROR as I THOUGHT I had to drill out the strip to remove or add clips to the new scraper. Just in time and by staring down the new scraper, I realized I just had to squeeze the clip together and I could remove it !!! Whew. I DID NOT need the drill. Hopefully this will help someone not make the error I almost did. I liked and used your video for my project above all others I reviewed. Thank you.
Nice demo on the door panel /arm rest removal and the clips for the felt channel.
✅Seeing the arm rest and clips up close.
It's all about the details. 😁
Excellent video and you make it easy to follow with nothing missed out. You’re a gentleman!
Thanks Anthony. Hope it was helpful.
Thanks for the guide! Just got some doors that need scrapers replaced
Thank you.
Much better than the JBubs video; thank you.
Thanks Professor!
Thank you for for your video. I was able to change my window scrapers and felt with ease thanks to your video
Thanks Matthew, glad it helped.
You show and tell very good. Easy for this 63 yr old newbie to see and understand. Please do more self Bug improvements when you can. Thank You from SC
@campion05 Thank you, hope this was helpful. Got a few more videos I'm working on.
Good morning ☀️ and ☕️ I join your channel and of course I enjoy watching your video.. very beautiful job to do on this car! Tell you … YOU are lucky to use YOU TUBE to learn more about VW.. In the past I had to use books.. Thank you for your post!
Yep, social media platforms have completely changed the "how-to" world.
Thanks for the tutorial. It's very well done. I am working on my 1975 La Grande Bug/Superbeetle. There are a couple minor differences but your video was more than enough to help me get everything apart. I discovered rust under the outer window scraper so I'll be doing some touch-up paint before I put everything back together.
This was the most clarifying video I ever watched about how to dismantle the door. Well done, mate
Thank you!
Excellent tutorial
Thanks Otto. Glad it was helpful.
Your the man. Thank-you for not only the great content but love the clips and style. I’m a 39 year old and your helping me build my child hood dream Baja bug, thank-you
Thanks M&F. Glad you enjoyed it. Stay after it on that baja!
Looks real easy hoping to use this to install mine thks
Hope the video helps.
It is really clear without short cuts, a learning experience thank you
This is the BEST video I've ever watched for my beetle. Thank you SO SO much for taking the time to explain the details.
Thanks, glad you liked it. I gotta put some more out there. 😁
The video helped me figure out how the felt in removed and installed again. Thanks for making the video.
Hey Jay, thanks for the refresher. I did mine some forty-five years ago when I was in my early twenties. The originals lasted about 13 outside years of hot California summers, and the replacements almost four times as long garaged in Oregon. It's time I replaced them again.
My wife is a fiddler and makes like she's going to open the windwings but I don't let her since I haven't operated them since the late seventies. It's a 1963 Bug.
One thing I'd mention - as long as the panels are out, clean out the weepholes at the bottom of the inside. They get plugged up and will cause rust. Also, you didn't have a clear plastic (visquine) between the door and the door panels? The plastic keeps moisture away from the cardstock panel.
Finally, I love German engineering! Even in a low end product they pay Porsche quality attention to the details. Everything fits with precision. Thanks for sharing.
Daniel, yes I always clean inside the bottom of the door, just didn't mention it. I get in there with a vacuum and even knock dirt loose with a screwdriver if I have to. Yeah, I could have replaced the sheet of visqueen but didn't have any and old ones were brittle. Thanks for sharing.
You’ve owned the bug since new? It must be a real gem. How many miles?
@@AndyHinkson , no, not the original owner. I bought it from my cousin. I drove it for about ten years, then gave it to my parents who took it up to Oregon. My mom gave it back to me four years ago, when they stopped driving it.
It’s a fun vehicle to drive around in, especially since so many people want to stop and chat about it with me. Cheers 🍻
THANK YOU,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,LONG LIVE BEETLES
This is a fantastic resource, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. I noticed the outside scraper at the back had a curled edge. I had this same anomaly with my Wolfsburg West “German” scraper. Also, when you had the wing window out, that was a good time to adjust (usually tighten) the hinge/pinch bolt at her bottom of the window. This keeps it so the wind won’t alter the position of the window. Snug, but not so tight that the window won’t turn, lol.
Yes, that curled or bowed out rubber in the corner really bugged me. I parked the car in the sun and put a piece of masking tape on it to hold it against the window. It helped a little but still noticeable.
Thank you for the video
You're welcome.
Thank You! This is the video I needed to see! My little '72 is getting the same treatment. ✌😀
Thanks Mark, hope the video helps.
@@JayDubCustoms Indeed it does.
This is a GREAT video !! I am going to be following this step by step... thank you !
Thank you!
very well explained
Thanks Jerry!
thanks...I appreciate the way you demonstrate
Nice Video Jay,, a nice example of smooth teaching,, some I new about already from my 64 bug but now I'm fully Restoring a 67..
Thanks James, hope it was helpful.
I'm with Gomer.😆 Shazam... I didn't realize the rubber scraper was gonna be on a frame.
LOL!
I love what you did.My 68 VW needs this,,probable replacement the vents on boths door. I enjoy your video.
Thank you Jacky.
Terrific video! There's a lot more to this job than I expected. I recently purchased a 1970 Beetle. The previous owner had the windows tinted and some of the tinting on the driver's side window has scraped off. The scrapers seem ok and the passenger widow tinting is fine. So I'm not sure why the tinting on the driver's side is damaged. After watching your video, I think I'll just live with it until the scrapers need replacing.
Hope the video was helpful. I've always thought it's easier to take the windows out when tinting. Maybe do it at a time when you're replacing window rubber.
Best most thorough video I’ve seen. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, thank you. Just what I needed to replace the scrapers on my 1972 Super Beetle!
Excellent video. I replaced the outside scrappers and window channel on my super last summer. I ended up spraying silicone lube on the new window channels. It really helped.
Thanks Jeff, I'll have to try the silicone.
Thank you, great tutorials! Keep those videos going!!!👍
Thanks Chester.
Nice video (A ''cross'' Tip is called a Phillips and a ''Flat'' tip is called a standard)
Great video. I have to replace my scrapers soon. This will help so much. Thanks.
Thanks Steve!
Very nicely detailed video. 30 minutes went by fast!
Thanks Super Bear!
Great step by step instructions.thx
Thank you!
Enjoyed the windsheild video as well, thanku for taking the time to share
Thanks Jason, hope they were helpful.
Doing my scrapers this weekend, did you happen to cut scrapper at wing window, so the rubber is flat at glass? Prolly would not have taken on this task without your video, thanku again for another fine video.
Thank you, great detailed explanation. It will certainly help me.
Glad it was helpful.
Thank you for the quality of your videos! They are the best ones to learn "how to"
Also vent window bolt the difficult cross screw, I used a impact gun on worked like a charm, and my hardware had never been touched, hope this helps someone.
Thanks Jason.
Excellent video!
Thanks Owen, hope it helped.
fantastic video and nice teacher .. thanks
Great video and information
Thanks Ron!
Good video! Nice delivery!
Thanks Jed, hope it was helpful.
Awesome! I was anxious about tearing down the door to do this project, your video has broken each part down with great detail. I just got a 1970 and thought all the interior knobs were sun rotted plastic. When I went to replace them I noticed I had wooden knobs for everything! Never knew bugs had wooden accents, but I see all your knobs are wooden too! I sanded and varnished and they look great now!Subscribing and will be back for the next project. Great job, and thanks.
J.P. Glad you liked the video. Yes, those wooden pieces are aftermarket add-ons. Mine were on there when I bought the car.
Thanks I need to do this to mine
Cool, I hope the video will help out.
The inner plastic weather shield should be installed; at least tell the viewer.
Excellent video and all done at a good pace well done
Thanks David!
Learned a lot,Thank you
Thanks Jay, it’s big help.
Glad it helped Trini
Excellent job on the instructional video. 👍👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks, I wish I had a Video of the proses for my year..
Well done- thank you!
Thanks James.
Thanks for the tutorial! Great job.
Thanks ErosRoy!
I did truly enjoy your vid. and learned a lot also !
Great job !
Thanks for the info. Very good video.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you, so informative.
Thanks Margaret.
Thank you
Very nice video. thank you for the way you detailed the process.
Thanks Richard... appreciate it.
Great video thank you so much!
Thank you.
Great video! really helpful
Thank you.
Well explained, very details as I ever saw here. Great job, I immediately subscribed.
James, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the sub!
The scrajpper rubber should be trimmed/cut, to butt against the center guide, so that the rubber will contact the sliding glass.
Good point, I'll take another look.
Thanks man, also love that color 👍 it's just like my 70. I don't know what to call it when it reaches this shade, so what about race-rust-red?💡
Thanks Judith, just seeing your comment. 😁 Yes, race-rust-red will work.
Definitely appreciate the video, GREAT JOB!! Issue I'm having is when I roll the window down and then back up, it's getting caught behind the outside scraper; what would you recommend for a fix? Is there anything to apply to assist the window to move up/down easily? Really enjoyed your video. Thank you again.
Thanks Angel, you may have to drop the window glass down (5:45) then press on the scraper with your fingertips and ensure the clips are snapped into the door. And maybe even roll the edge of the soft metal away from the glass towards the inside of the door. Then position the glass all the way up before tightening the bolts (29:40).
It did help somebody thanks
Awesome video, well explained
Thanks! Hope it was helpful.
O have to do the same to my 1971 super beetle. It’s missing the inner one.
Bravissimo, è un video molto molto utile!
Really helpful thanks
Thanks Banksy! Glad you liked it.
Good job
Outstanding video !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Sandfleez!
fantastic! thank you sir!
You bet!
Thank You!!!
No problem.
I would like to know how long does this job take from beginning to end?
Excellent video very informative and interesting,
I've done quite a few, so about an hour per door if all goes well.
@@JayDubCustoms I would probably take me about 3 hours per door not counting the problems that appear a long the way.
very well done informative video
Thank you!
Nice video Jay, the newer bugs, guessing 73" up have fewer clips. Thanks for your tips.
Thanks Doug!
This is a great tutorial for replacing the window scraper. We got all of it done until the window separated from the window sash trying to roll it back up. The sash was all rusted out. Waiting for that so we can finish the job. Any suggestions on getting the window to roll a little easier? It’s so tight with the felt and scraper.
Thanks, hope the video was helpful. Yes, I know what you mean with it feeling tight, and it'll be that way because everything is new. Only thing I can suggest... loosen the 2 bolts that hold the glass to the regulator, roll it all the way up ensuring it's aligned properly then re-tighten the bolts via the two access holes.
Wow I did not realize it was that long ago that I made a comment on your video I'm just about done with my 67 I just got German scrapers inside. and outs for my doors ordered I do need to clean my regulators they're just a little grungy but they're okay I was trying to save my original outer Scrapers but by the time I got into them they were in pretty bad shape they looked okay on the outside but where the felt goes they were pretty cracking beat up I should be getting them on June 19th..
Hope the video helps you out.
Awesome video great details on assembly👍 I have a 71 Super. I would imagine it sets up and works the same to install??
Yes John, supers and standards have the same doors.
European cars usually use 10, 13, and 17 MM That is what I like most when you need to use..
Nice video. Very well explained. Thanks. I subscribed.
Thanks Blake, hope it helped. Thanks for the sub!
Great job what about a convertible thanks Joe from Exeter New Hampshire
I’m actually restoring a 71 Super Beetle convertible. I’ll do a video on the scrapers.
Thanks I'll be on the lookout again excellent informational video
Isn't there usually a spring behind the door panel right where the window crank is?
Yes there is. It keeps the panel against the crank so no gap. I should have put one on it.
Reading the comments are so so helpful to! ! I also subscribed.
Thanks for the video‼️❤️
Would you recommend using white lithium grease (or any other product) to keep the rubber from drying out?
Rob, the lithium is more for metal and plastic parts like the window regulator. Keeps it lubed. Never really thought of putting something on the scraper. Maybe some Armor All occasionally or another dressing for rubber.
Thanks Jay for the great explanation. Is the process exactly the same for a 73 Type 3? Also how do you replace the knob on the quarter vent window?
Paul I've never wrenched on a Type 3 but I would imagine it is very similar to the Beetle. The vent knob involves a rivet. I'm working on a video about all windows for a 71 Super Beetle convertible. Hope to get it posted soon.
I’m gonna do the same to my 1971, but I don’t want to add the chrome trim around the window. Can it be done?
Don't think so... the trim and the rubber are made as one piece. The trim is what actually holds everything in the window. One option would be to black it out.
What about recovering inside of door with plastic ?
Tim, yes I should have covered that step. But it's basically to keep the back of the door panel from getting wet if driving a lot in the rain, or from a car wash.
Great videos. Any idea what size those phillips screws are for the scraper and the vent window inside the top?
The small one in the scraper is a #1. The larger one holding the vent window is a #2. That one is usually tight, so put some upward pressure on it when turning it to avoid stripping it out.
The only thing crucial that you're missing would be the plastic sheeting To keep your door panel from getting wet Just FYI..
Yeah I went back and added it, just didn't do it during the video. Yes, key to keeping the door panel dry.
Hi, Jay. I am in the process of restoring my 1970 Beetle and I noticed that mine doesn't have the vent wing. I'm not sure what to do with the scrapers and felt channels, do you have any advice?
Love the videos, super helpful and informative. Keep it up 🎆
Suzette, Someone probably removed those to install a "one-piece" window. They are primarily for looks. I suggest you find a pair of vent windows and put them back in. They keep the bug original and are nice for directing air into the car when driving in warm or hot weather. The stock scrapers will not fit correctly without them. You could most likely find a pair at a VW show and swap meet. I might have a couple, I'd have to look. What state are you in? There's 3 shows coming up this Spring in the TN and NC areas.
Unfortunately I am in South Africa so not going to be possible 😂 but I will check if there are a few options on my side. Thank you so much for your help
I just replaced the scrapers on a 63 beetle, the inner scraper uses the wire style clip. Can you use the newer style like you used in this video?
I believe it's a 65 and newer version with the ones you used in this video.
@goldentrunnell7450 I know what you mean with the wire type clip. I've never switched them out, but I imagine the rectangular holes in the door are the same on both early and late models. I'd have to look. If that's the case, either clip would work on the door. The newer style seems to be softer and more flexible when snapping into place. I just don't know how you'd remove the wire clips from the scraper and then attach the new type.
Hey Jay.I was wondering about the parts that you ordered from Wolfsburg. Did it come in a whole kit,or did you have to order each part separately? Thanks Darren.
Darren, it's 4 separate parts. Here's part numbers: 113853321D, 113853322D, 111837475B and 111837476B.
Saved me time to look up parts, thank u
Nice vid, in the uk we call the event window the quarter light. But more importantly having real difficulties with the winder mechanism. Any ideas ?
David, are you referring to the winder for the main door window? If so, I use white lithium grease to lubricate the track. If it's rusted bad enough you should take it out of the door and put some lube on it like WD-40 and wind it up and down until it moves easy. Then the lithium when you put it back in. Also, sometimes the 2 bolts at the bottom of the window glass come loose and then it will bind up in the felt channel causing it to feel tight. Check that too.
Hi yes it's the winder mechanism. Am on my second new track , lubed up as you say but I wonder if the door edge track is out of place ? Through rust etc . I have the window in after 3 days but it goes up ok but struggles to come down without a push from the top. Got rid of the fancy wonders now have the correct splined original black handle.
What are the part numbers or links from Wolfsburg west?
For 65 to 77 Bug outside scrapers is 113853321D for left side and 113853322D for right.
Put the Brazil kit on my 71 squareback and they suck" Scrappers do not even touch the glass.
Mine to" Junk ..........!
hi there... I know this is a stupid question... But can you please show me how to put in the rear view mirrow. Mine keeps falling out...
Armand, watch my windshield video at 20:35. I put a mirror in. It twists in to the right. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/BNB7CyVEVnI/видео.html
Great stuff. Got it.. I wish I have somebody here near me to help me restore my beetle...
