When you’ve got the rod pulled all the way forward to the back of the apron, you can angle down far enough to go under the apron. It’s a tight squeeze but it will come out. I’ve done a few.

What were you looking to get done on it?

That one doesn't have trim rings, it's a chrome wheel with hubcaps.

I think you're talking about the 67 with the white wheels?? It's just a standard 15" beauty ring for the Beetle. EMPI dealers carry those too.

@@sparlin88 If you can, get the Imecal brand outside scrapers. They're made in Brazil and much better quality. VW part numbers are 113 853 321D and 322D. If you buy from an EMPI dealer, it's 98-1048-B and 1050-B. Those fit 65 and later Beetles. I have a set on-hand.

I've never done a 78. And I know there's a lot more stuff behind the dash of a SB. Just jump right in and keep track of how things are removed. 👍

@CMSgarage96 The cable does function without the tube, but like I said it's a pain to fish it down the tunnel. It wants to fall to the bottom of course and then get wrapped around the many other things that are in there, like heater cables, etc. Plus the tube protects the cable from rub and wear from touching other parts. You can install a tube but it requires opening the bottom of the pan, which is another big task.

@@JayDubCustoms Thanks for the info! I kinda figured the cable might rub on other components causing wear. Currently my Autostick works great, just looking into options up the road if it fails. I thought about installing a tube by drilling a few large openings in the side of the tunnel to help feed it through and tack welding it in. Just don’t want to weaken the tunnel either.

@@JayDubCustoms I would take the clutch servo unit attached to the transmission, the control valve that sits in the top left part of the engine bay would be a good start.

@@JayDubCustoms Also wondering if you still have that Autostick emblem on the back where the Volkswagen logo usually is. Honestly, anything related to the autostick that you think is usable I would be interested in.

I'm restoring the same car now.. 71 Super vert. Almost done with it, just needs the top upholstered. Mine didn't require replacing the pan. Your call on selling vs restoring... they're neat cars to work on and a vert will be worth $$ when you're done.

@goldentrunnell7450 I know what you mean with the wire type clip. I've never switched them out, but I imagine the rectangular holes in the door are the same on both early and late models. I'd have to look. If that's the case, either clip would work on the door. The newer style seems to be softer and more flexible when snapping into place. I just don't know how you'd remove the wire clips from the scraper and then attach the new type.

Yes, pretty much the same procedure. The only difference might be the part that starts at 17:00 minutes. That might not be done on the earlier Bugs. I’m not 100% sure. That’s a 70 model I’m working on.

The small one in the scraper is a #1. The larger one holding the vent window is a #2. That one is usually tight, so put some upward pressure on it when turning it to avoid stripping it out.
