I was a bit nervous to do this. I have a'73 standard, and decided to take the plunge. My only advice is to remove the glass before drilling. I did a little scratch on the glass. Not as good as you and your dad Chris. LOL Your video was really easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom restoring VWs. Ciao
I am digging the music! Weird? NO, it's awesome surf! I originally came here looking for a "how to replace the handle on my '63 vent window", but got side tracked. Glad I did, I learned some new stuff.
+Josh Briggs You'll need to stand in line. I have been praying about a convertible top video but I asked and I know Chris outsources those... sad day for me. ;-) (I love this channel especially when something new is posted.)
Very nice video. I'm working on replacing all the seals on my bay window vent window and I'm trying to find out what is the actual name and where I can locate the proper flaring rivet tool like the one you utilized. Thanks for your time and help.
Did you use a generic "pop-rivet" for the vent swivel?? I'm doing the same to my '71 Bay window vent and it came with a specific rivet and washer but I don't have the correct tool to install it! Any "insider" info you'd care to impart?? Great music in your video BTW!
excellent video on the windows, a question what substance do you apply with a small brush to the tube that protrudes from the bottom base of the window ???? Cheers
well usually a new knob comes on the chrome lock arm, and that has to be riveted inside the chrome frame. So if you go that way, then yes the glass has to come out.
Just what I was looking for. Need to replace my rubber and a lot of the rivets have broken already. Looks like I'll need one of those press tools to get them flush.
Chris, do you think you could show us how to do the earlier stuff? I've got a 59 project that will need seals and wondered what was different about the procedure
Chris, you have guided me through my old 73' Beetle restoration (until a tree fell on the roof - no real fix for that) and now it's replacement a 72' Super Beetle. When replacing the window scrapers I decided to replace the vent seal. The parts are from MAMWorks so they're quality. I have struggled for many hours trying to get the main seal to seat in the wing frame. Any trick I'm not catching in your video ?
+Chris Vallone yes - trying to follow the instruction video exactly...using liquid wrench silicone as shown. I'm afraid of pushing too hard and ripping the rubber. Perhaps not pushing hard enough. I'll keep trying because I need the window . I've thought of sending it back and ordering from CIP1.
Thanks Chris! This could not be more timely as this is on my to-do list for this winter. I have a 1965 convertible and the passenger side doesn't really align well with the windshield with the door closed. The driver and passenger side are both somewhat different. Is it possible that someone replaced the original with wrong year? Or is my problem something else? Thanks!
They appear different. I have not measured them but one has a round handle for opening and one has a lever. I thing the driver side is the original and the round handled one on the passenger side is a different year. With the door closed, there is a substantial gap between the vent window and the windscreen post.
+Matt Jackson I replaced the broken handle part of my vent window latch '77. Bought a new latch, removed (tapped out) the pin that holds the new handle to the new latch base and installed only the new handle on the original latch base. Just keep the vent window in place. The new handle is a looser fit but it works. Might make for a nice vid, how to replace broken handle of vent window latch without removing latch.
This video helped me a lot. I started taken the door apart already and figured I would tackle the Vent Windows. Quick question Chris, What size rivet did you use for the pivot? Or do you use something else now on the later vent window pivots?
CHRIS. CAN YOU SHOW HOW TO INSTALL THE SEAT RESTBACK CABLE?. I HAVE A MEXICAN VW 1985 AND HAVE THE INNER CABLE UNABLE. THANK YOU, leonel. I BUY IN Cip1 but their not response positive respect of these cables.
hi Chris, How do you install the small rivets for the window latch and the vent window hinge? got a broken window latch. Do you have a vid on installing the 1/4 window glass to the frame, Gonna have to do this to replace the latch unfortunately.
What if the seal that hols the actual vent glass to the chrome and the handle has rotted and separates? I cant find that seal to install it anywhere. Please help!?
Great chris! I guess the only way to.replace the seal is to drill the rivet? For example if we cut the rubber at the rivet point? Its a pitty to waste a good original rivet.any way to buy an identical.aftermarket rivet! Thank you for your time, you are always helpfull!!
do you ever install the accessory vent shades on the doors? bought some for my car but the instructions are vague and I cant find any how-to on them...
Hi Chris, New Beetle owner... Its actually my "Lady's Bug" - groan, but question about the rivet for the top of the vent window attaching to the frame. I see you're using a "pop" rivet here (7:06). The local Beetle shop got me one closer to the one I drilled off. At a loss as to how to put that on exactly? Any ideas? I feel like I'm missing the back or something? 1970 VW bug
Chris. I know this is entirely off-topic, but settle an argument for me. You more than anyone could answer this one. As a thought experiment...would it be possible to build a Beetle from ground up using only after-market parts? I know that probably the toughest parts to acquire would be the floorpan and steel body parts, but do the last Beetle manufacturers in Mexico still use their body and floor stamping tools for spares? And could one get hold of such parts? Just wondering what your take on this is.
Hey Chris. Great videos! Just getting back into air cooled after a long hiatus. Picked up a 55 beetle. Someone ruined those beautiful ribbed doors with one piece windows. Have you ever successfully put the wing windows back into a cut door? I’m handy with a welder and enjoy fabrication. Thx. Keep the awesome videos coming!
Hi Chris, I'm trying to find out if my bug is a 1960 or 61. I only have the vin for the chassis # 3957203. Seller has paperwork showing 1960 but my info is showing 1961. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance!
I put a new main rubber seal. It’s seated as it should but the glass won’t sit flat against the frame when closed . What’s causing this as been fighting with it all day ! Thanks Chris

I miss my 1965 bug when I was 19.. very sorry to sell it.. wish I had YOU TUBE, then I might kept bug longer… well, thank you for post..
These type of videos are so helpful for the DIY community! Thank you and keep up the awesome work!!!

This was great! Cn you recommend a glue for bonding the last felt runner in???
I've also been looking all over, what to use!? gorilla snot?
on the vertical window felt on a 69 what do you used to cut it to the right length? Help please!
Metal clippers
excellent video Chris! you should consider doing a video like this for earlier vent windows
+Josh Briggs I have, it's in the 300+ videos I made.

Dan Johnson haha he is my vw source of intelligence
What is used to secure the wing bracket to the top of the door inside the window track?
Like a 5mm screw threads up in there.
What do you do if you don’t have the plastic slider piece in at 4:01 of the video? Mine were brittle and broken
You might be able to source one used or new on a site like cip1

Yep, you can use a generic one
@@classicvwbugs thanks Chris. This will move me along on my project nicely.
@@classicvwbugs So any pop rivet that fits will do the job? A heavy duty rivet is not needed?
@@SDsailor7 the best one you can get that can fit in that hole. the stronger the better.

I got my seals from JBugs and they pretty much fit like crap. Me or common ?
Very common. it is like this across the board tho, not just with jbugs.
Chris, another great video! What do you charge for labor to do a pair of vent windows like that? Thanks!
Well usually a few hours work x 125.00 an hour
Chris: What is the spec on the rivet? Aluminum dome head, 1/8" x 1/4"? Aluminum Mandrel (nail?)
1/8" x 1/8" aluminum
It's a 5/32nd hole size.

+Chris Vallone thanks!
Is it more or less the same process for a convertible?
Kind of, still a bit different.
