  • Hey Volks,
Here is a short tip on removing, inspection, and installation of the big box air blower for those 70s super beetles. This bug came in for repair today and they said the air did not work in the car. Upon inspection we noticed it was just disconnected, but for a reason! The motor squealed like a lil pig. So in this video we take it out and inspect why it was making noise. An easy fix for this one.
Just a spur of the moment video and I decided to film it for you guys.

We need to get back to this. Parts that can be taken apart fixed and re used again, saving resources and energy back in the 70’s!

The fresh air box 2 speed fresh air fan switch on the "71" dash was an option on the sedan 111. I just this past winter pulled mine and refreshed the entire assembly. I have just recently posted the materials used "how to" on TheSamba. Look for 1971 Super Beetle Fresh Air Box Refresh. My motor was whiny also that was fixed with a few light squirts of Marvel Mystery Oil followed by compressed air to force any residual oil out. The two rubber deflection flaps were traced and cut from black rubber toe kick strips from HD and then small bolted back in. The metal directional flaps were sanded and painted and covered with Dr. Scholls shoe inner soles held with traditional contact cement. The four rubber clad vibration absorption mounting nut and bolts were cleaned and fixed with rubber tub seal drain ring from HD. The cowling horseshoe seal was 3/8" Frost King real rubber door seal. Works like a charm. Thanks for the great productions guys!

Thanks for posting . I have my wiper motor assembly out and my heater box (and most of the dash) and I couldn't remember which goes in first. LOL

Glad to see a SB video. I own a 73 SB and although they're different interior-wise this may apply. I own a 67 as well and I like to say that driving my SB is very much driving a 1970s car while the 67 is like driving a 1940s car.

I just bought a 74 Sun Bug restored in 1995 and featured in VW Trends magazine in 98. All of the wiring and vent hoses were brought under the "New" regular car-style dashboard.
How do I get the fresh air box to close on a 73-74 type?
There no access to it as its under the slats at the base of the windshield.

Wish my '68 had a fan in its fresh air box instead of just relying on passive airflow. Also happy to see that Pops is doing well! 👍

Good video. I did this to my ‘71 SB last summer to clean the box and lube the fan. Also put new foam seals around the air box connections.

Hi, I know this is an old comment, but I was wondering where is the switch for the fan? I have a 1972 Super Beetle that I'm trying to restore and I'm still learning where everything is. I just took off the fan box to clean it and check the motor.

my 73 super has a blower motor located under the rear seat where the channel come into the cab on the drivers side. it looks stock but could be an early add on. I'm not sure if i have a motor in the dash like what you have. i will say that it doesn't work... like any other bug heater

I just took apart the fan box on my 1972 Super Beetle to clean it...that was a royal pain! Why couldn't they have just used screws to put it together?? Why clips? So annoying.

My daily driver is a 72 SB. What is that Chrome bar that goes from one side to the other? I'm guessing it's to improve handling.

Did you know WD40 is not a lubricant. It stands for Water Displacement formula 40
