  • I thought about not posting this video because of some dumb comments I've been getting lately about doping, but I've decided not to change what I post for the people who don't get me at the cost of the folks who do. Flattering as it is to be accused of riding so fast that it can't be real, if this or anything I've done looks doped to you, you're really just admitting that don't know anything about me and you don't know much about cycling. The truth is I'm not even that fast, I was rarely more than a role player in the WorldTour, there's lots of clean riders who could drop me (and did), and this is a very attainable effort to beat if you put in the work for ten years like I did.
    For folks who are new here, if you want to learn more about me, my feelings about doping, why I got my CLEAN tattoo, and be entertained with some funny stories, I’ve put that out a long time ago in three excellent books available in stores on my website. I'll even discount the books so I'm not making money on these--one week only, BOOKS code gets you $5 off. www.philsfondo.com/shop
    Do me a favor: don't name any trolls in my comments here and there's no need to argue with them on my behalf. I know who I am and the best way to have my back is to unfollow them and starve them of the drama they want. I'm pretty sure it's just one guy with 50 fake accounts and too much free time anyway, so if you don't know what I'm talking about with any of this, consider yourself blessed and move on. Willunga video coming next!

      is this all about that guy from down under who creates controversy and click bait videos to get views? He also said Ritchie Porte was slower on his Emonda because the disc brakes made it heavier, (true sort of) but both versions would have been the same weight to meet the UCI weight limit, meaning no weight difference between that two for a UCI race. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    You got really close, Phil. Great job! One of the things I sometimes forget is that the Pro's have the advantage of racing on a closed course. And in De Ghent's case, he was in a group the whole time. You no longer have that luxury and yet you still manage KOMS! Or at the very least; you hold your own against guys still in the game :)

    Awesome vid Phil! I'm from Adelaide and we are truly blessed to have so many beautiful climbs like this right on our doorstep. Reason there are so few cars is that there is a kind of unwritten rule of Norton.... bikes get New Norton Summit rd and the cars take Oldl Norton Summit Rd.. they both end up in the same place! In reality this happened as the cars get sick of being stuck behind the bikes on the new rd but hey as a cyclist who's complaining!

    Phil, someone may have mentioned this already, the trees by the side of the Norton Summit climb are Eucalyptus... Koala's love to hang out and chomp on the leaves. Incidentally, you will see a ton of Eucalyptus trees in SoCal. I did a gravel ride out of Temecula a few weeks ago and was blown away by the number of imported Eucalyptus trees I spotted along the route.
    Massive kudos too for your effort. I cut my cycling teeth on Norton Summit way back in 1991 on gearing I would never ride today, ha! Hopefully, you can return to try your hand at some other climbs in Adelaide during another visit. Corkscrew is one (Pro Tour has been up it) and Coachman Road... both are short but steep little buggers!

    Hey Phil how do you deal with cramps (or prevent them)? I've noticed that occasionally when I do a really hard effort I will be prone to cramps (mainly hamstring) for several hours afterward, especially in the winter when I'm not riding as many miles (and also not drinking as much while on rides). Would love to hear your thoughts on that.

    • @jonnythelegs2597
      @jonnythelegs2597 5 лет назад

      Include a 10-15 warm down (no effort just spin the legs and shake them out a bit ie relax the muscles and wiggle your knees in and out) at the end of the ride. Drink more (electrolyte mix), add some stretching and massaging of your hamstrings post ride. You can stretch mid ride without stopping too, stand out of the saddle straighten one leg and push your heel down as far as you can and hold for a few seconds then do the other leg and repeat. If you do that here and there when out it should help a fair bit. I do plenty of century plus length rides in shitty and cold weather and these things definitely help me.

    I haven't tracked the drama Phil is talking about but IIRC, his 2nd book casually mentions throwing down 467W for 14 minutes at 147lbs (I can do that for about 90 seconds at 170lbs!) when he was still a pro. 455 for 11 is off his peak form.

    How much drafting assistance is provided by camera bikes, commissaire bikes, team cars etc. during a World Tour race? I'll wager that it's a significant enough amount which in turn enables many of the KOM's taken by pros in the breakaway. So unless you can simulate all that, it's bound to be hard to beat those times. In light of that, considering that Phil has beaten such KOM's is proof positive that he's a beast!

    • @worstretirementever
      @worstretirementever  4 года назад +1

      I think the riders’ draft is more of a factor, and having both sides of the road. Of course I get to come in all fresh and rested on a silly light bike :)

    Why are there so many naysayers? Phil was a pro for years, and the ability for him to put down a sub 15 minute effort with higher power than during the ultimate climb in a stage race is easy to understand: as (a) he only focuses on one effort and not the entirety of a stage, and (b) his training can be done so for specificity, i.e. training for climbs. It does not take rocket science to ascertain that simple fact. His capillary development and training know-how are still there and thus he is uniquely apt to lay down these efforts and produce epic videos for our entertainment

    Dear Phil, it's quite clear to me that you are showing the outstanding capabilities of genetically gifted and hard working *clean* athlete. As someone who follows cycling for many years I, unfortunately, can tell when extremely gifted athletes are crossing the human capabilities with outrages performances during brutal races (especially 1990-2013). Your achievements are far beyond of us ordinary people but quite modest compared with the top juiced gladiators of cycling.
