16:32 Hahaha! 7 + 997 = 1004 ≠ 1000. The altitude must be getting to you, but I can relate. Math skills at altitude are always less than optimal. Great Video! love the humor, and the tour around the Big Bear area. I can't wait to move back to Southern California, and this definitely made me miss it in all the right ways. Thanks Phil!
Thanks, Phil, for sharing your knowledge of the roads and restaurants in and around Big Bear--and for explaining how you did altitude training there. And now I may have to eat like a local and make a big pancake or two for breakfast in the morning.
Best travel review ever! Phil should seriously do more videos like this reviewing all cool places to go riding plus the best places to eat. You can use cookies instead of stars for your ratings.
Just 2 hours away from where I live in Norway we have a race up a HC climb called nibberittet. It’s usually the second weekend in June. It starts at sea level in Geiranger and goes up to 1500m over 21km. 1st place gets 5000NOK plus an additional 10000NOK if you set a new course record , which is currently just shy of 1:04:00. You should come and have a crack at it Phil. You could end up with a big strava KOM and some prize money (about US$1800).
Im 90% i threw up and got a coffee from that cafe in Angelus Oaks. I hiked most of the way up San Gorgonio Mountain felt the altitude, got a headache and felt nauseous and then threw up at that cafe on the way back to San Diego.
Funny thing. I used to live in BB. I managed a bike shop in town. When I was looking for good training, I went to Yosemite. I could ride to 10,000 feet. You can't do that in BB.
Phil for best retirement ever come check out the Garret County Gran Fondo next June. The longest route is 126 miles and 15000 feet of elevation gain, including a KOM competition. The cookies at the rest stops were excellent. And just a hour or so south is Spruce Knob, WVs highest point and the segment is currently held by Joe Dombro. Hope to see you out here
Big Bear is fantastic. Tour de Big Bear HC is the best fondo (almost a race) I've ever done. Going down 38 through damnation alley isn't even fun let alone going up it.
Wattage Cottage looks amazing. My wife keeps saying she wants to come to CA when I travel overseas there with work. I need to divert to Big Bear for a couple of weeks and bring my bike :)
I once saw a guy and his bike completely melt and disappear into the asphalt in Damnation Alley. Or maybe I was hallucinating from the heat. If you need a sugar shot on the way to Onyx Summit, the store in Angelus Oaks often has Mexican Cokes.
If you think bread with mac 'n cheese is lots of carbs, you should come to Scotland. Pretty standard to get a portion of fries with your mac 'n cheese here.
Hey Phil, where would you recommend staying (neighborhoods, roads, etc) so you can sleep at altitude? I'm trying to find something on AirBnB that's at altitude. Thanks ... love your channel!
Haha my house! Bigbearwattagecottage.com. It’s a small city though you can’t really go wrong. Big bear lake is the fancy side. Closer you can be to that the better but fawnskin is nice and my place is in big bear City
Phil Gaimon ha ha, that’s too funny. I’ll look into it for the spring. Hoping to find somewhere warm at altitude in February or March. May have to look south of the equator.
lol, after you up to 5000 feet it gets better :) That's assuming you don't puke around 4000 feet. Driving up to big mountain to ski is hard enough, let alone climb up.
Phil, this is the best Big Bear bike tour guide/info piece ever. I love it. Thanks for putting this up. I'm inspired to visit now!
Thousand Oaks minus Seven Oaks equals 997 Oaks?.... Ummmm 😳 Must be the altitude
English major...
Wish these episodes came out weekly 👍
when would I sleeeeeep?
Ex pros don’t need sleep. 🤔 Keep up the great content my friend 👍👍
Love this! Big Bear used to be my stomping grounds in the 90s when I was racing downhills and some XC.

He thought about the 3 beside the seven oaks name
Dude I can’t believe that Phil’s channel is still so small. He is so funny and the videos that are editing good are amazing.

You know how some people have "an infectious laugh"? Phil has an infectious deadpan.
Also Nikki Sixx is a male mostly.
Just started following because of the upcoming PV switchback ride . This is awesome, keep breaking KOMs and making these great videos!

Yay, a useful video! Thumbs up, esp. for including food reviews.
Thank you, for all tips and pointer around Big Bear. I'll be camping and biking their next month.
Enjoy!

I grew up about an hour from Big Bear but never went, so this is a cool look at an area I'd like to go to someday

Very fun ride! Although climbs out there arent really comparable to the big climbs elsewhere. Very beautiful though.
Great episode Phil, thanks for the content
The Chamber better be giving you some kick back for this. Might have to visit.
That was a good watch, man.
The Oaks Restaurant in Angelus Oaks is SUPER bike friendly. They'll get you a pitcher of ice water if you're thirsty... And good cornbread.
Big Bear is fantastic. Tour de Big Bear HC is the best fondo (almost a race) I've ever done. Going down 38 through damnation alley isn't even fun let alone going up it.
One liners were killer.
Hey Phil enjoying the Feed commercial on bike racing you did.
I’m going to big bear this weekend for my 30th to ride this! Can’t wait
Enjoy!
Nikki Six is a guy, now he will challenge you to his Gran Fondo but it may not involve bikes.
Wattage Cottage looks amazing. My wife keeps saying she wants to come to CA when I travel overseas there with work. I need to divert to Big Bear for a couple of weeks and bring my bike :)
Do it!

There is a fun road on the back side of Lake Arrowhead, goes down the back side towards the desert to a dead-end, never any cars.
"there's a sneaky little watering hole that only the locals know about"
*proceeds to disclose the exact location of the watering hole*
You’re welcome
cemetaries often have water access points too.
It was cool to see the 🍪 mini Cooper at the tour de Big Bear. Also 2018 champion are you.
You should definitely visit New Zealand, and race K2 and then try the climb up Turoa ski field
would love to see you cycle up to the Madonna del Ghisallo church and museum in Lake Como!
...minus one because they blew that one up... lol!
As someone who’s extended family has a house in arrowhead I’m occasionally allowed to use, this video is awesome.
Thank you!
The only place.... Haleakala, Maui. 35 mile road goes from 0 feet to 10,024 feet and there are houses up to around 6500
If you think bread with mac 'n cheese is lots of carbs, you should come to Scotland. Pretty standard to get a portion of fries with your mac 'n cheese here.
This was just awesome
Merci for the infos Monsieur Gaimon !
Absolutely brilliant! Endless cookies for you Phil!
This is fantastic
8:14 Nikki Sixx the bassist for Motley Crew? Not a she.
Haha my editor told me I was going to get hell for that one but we left it in 😂. Not my genre oops!
You spelled Crue wrong
looks like one...i'm gonna go with Phil on this one lol
you forgot the heavy metal umlauts
Glad you left it in, love the humor in your videos.
It is funny, the observatory and landscape looks almost excatly like the one in the indie game "Firewatch" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewatch)
"I just said Nikki Sixx bc somebody told me that she's there." Lol

"...Rim of the World road...the view looks fake" *[intense smog]*
No that...looks very real
Ah yes please. I like some comedic relief with my bike videos.
Nice food at Himalayan Restaurant at the top of Pine Knot.
Nikki Sixx. SHE'S out there. Problem is, he's so deadpan I can't tell if he's messing with us.
You give me too much credit. I’m not up on that genre of music 🤣
Not that it matters, but Google gives the elevation of Redlands as 1358 feet.
how do u like that crazy saddle u use?? better than Specialize Saddle's?
Green Valley Lake is a fun climb, decent is fun
I went back and paid them and they were like "whatever" LOL!
That girl at 9:47 has the same caad 12 as me! Love that purple color.
Surprisingly entertaining. :)
Yo I want to live in Cali so bad rn
Good stuff
lol, after you up to 5000 feet it gets better :) That's assuming you don't puke around 4000 feet. Driving up to big mountain to ski is hard enough, let alone climb up.
Keep doing the Lord's work... Crashing Chris Horner.
997 + 7 ≠ 1000
What snow?
Keller Peak sounds like Mont Ventoux \//\
Clip in and ........pedal, eat, drink, repeat
lake is drying up lol
Ah the Best retirement ever!
Ah looks like a sweet place :)
The production value is not your best... Would be ok if I was from Cali and could get there without spending 3000$
Hahaha Nikki Six!
#factcheck. 1000 - 7 =993 :}
Nicky six, a she hahahah
