    The first time I went up a hillclimb in france a car pulled up alongside me, rolling down the window. I was already clinching my buttcheeks, preparing myself to get yelled at - the next thing you know they cheer at you to go harder. What an experience. Really sad that you have to go to another country for such an experience. It happens quite a lot here actually. (You don't wanna get close to city traffic with your bike though)
    I grew up in germany and as everyone knows, this is autoland so don't you dare use my Straße, du Fahrradhippie

    My wife and I love cycling however we choose to travel away from our home country Australia to do most of our cycle touring due to the belligerence of the motorists. We felt safer riding through Bangkok in peak hour traffic than we do riding down a a suburban rode in Australia.

    come to western massachusetts. its a rare, and disappointing day when you don't get a wave or a cheer from a passing motorist. you just have to deal with the shitty roads, the shitty winters, the non-existant bike shops and the absolutely NOTHING at all to do. but the motorists are very encouraging!

I have to find a hill near me that is around 10% and is non-technical (i.e. fairly straight) in order to ''rest'' on the way down. Now, THAT would be a good video for you to make big guy!! Can you do it in under 12 hours? (I'm aiming at 20)

  • @ringperm

    How many seconds to you think you loose by having to restrict yourself to riding in one lane, compared to the «WT train» who can use the whole road? A few of those outside turns (is that the correct term) looked mighty wide.

    No need for excuses Phil, Richie Porte knows a thing or two about climbing.

  • @chrisvanbuggenum871
    @chrisvanbuggenum871 5 лет назад

    I'd be curious to know what Richie porte's average watts were when he KOM'd it, or even his w/k. I think 487 watts is bloody impressive.

    • @bilwit
      @bilwit 5 лет назад +1

      CyclingTips has an article breaking down his numbers when he did it last year in 2018--his KOM was set in 2015 though but still it gives us some idea. Richie is much smaller than Gaimon so comparing absolute power doesn't translate. They said for the last 3kms he averaged 7.08 w/kgs for seven minutes with his initial attack at 10.37 w/kgs for one minute, which means if Gaimon skipped the rest of the stage and showed up at the bottom of Willunga last year, he might have won that day lol. It's worth pointing out though that the pack was together for the first 1.8kms of the 3k climb, so due to race dynamics it's not like a strava segment snipe where you pace max effort from start to finish.

    Porte was 11% faster, 11% more watts puts him at 8w/kg for almost 7mins - which is without other factors conservative. Thats so outlandish i don't even know what to say?!
