  • Well. Technically there are a lot of people who play Stellaris, but it could have been far more if it wasn't for steep learning curve and heavy DLC pricing.

No Man's Sky and KOTOR met mine
I had realistic expectations for NMS based on its early trailers. People who closely followed interviews and every breadcrumb about it pre-release got overhyped.
The Endless franchise (Endless Space, Endless Legend, Endless Dungeon, etc.) has an interesting universe.
Horizon Zero Dawn also blew me away with it's sci-fi side, though the primitive culture worldbuilding was weaker.

Stellaris is indeed amazing. The only thing I wish it had is a deeper space and much deeper ground combat. Paradox gets a lot of hate, but the amount of changes to even their base game that their custodian team makes, along with the new content additions a few times a year is the perfect way (imho) to continue to fund a game's development. I just bought the latest paragons expansion just to support the devs even though I haven't fired up Stellaris in a few months. I hope they continue to be profitable so we have clear examples in the gaming industry where reasonable monetization for hard work is possible for continued development and enhancement of products. I also hope the cash grab DLC monetization (without any real meaty additions), gamble boxes, NFT ideas from other studios continue to fail miserably also so we (as gamers) set the right precedent on what we are willing to fund.

Stellaris is one of my favourite games of all time. Yeah admittedly it does have a bit of a steep learning curve too it because of all the mechanics involved but once you get a handle on it the game's potential expands massively. I get what you're saying about the sheer scope of the game being its own problem as it's daunting to newer players but given the community based around the game, I still think it's in a very healthy place.

Something that should be noted: in the multiplayer, only the host needs the DLC in order for the lobby to have that content. Don't know if you want DLC x? find a lobby with that DLC, and test out the stuff in that DLC. or just have a friend that you can leech off of.

Stellaris is one of the best game I ever played. You can play short, mid and long sessions, you can play only for the first phase and stop, because the game is separated in different phases.
All DLC gives different mechanics that get worked on, origins, races and all of this.
Stellaris is literally one of my favorite game ever made. The massive space empire simulator I ever wanted.

I bought this recently and i agree with all these points, all the times I had played it before , the steep learning curve got me to refund, i think that happened almost 4 times. Each time I took like 20 minutes making a civ, get frustrated cause i cant make the civ i want cause dlc traits and then i would start and not know wtf to do without being overwhelmed. Now that I have experience with x4 foundations and other sims I have a certain threshold of overwhelming that I can handle now , and its why this last time I bought the game I could play it and enjoyed it a lot. But I'm not even an average gamer, I like strategy , ive fallen in love with space sims, and even then look at the difficulty I had.

I would like to add, if you have friends that play this game and have all of the dlc's, if you play a multiplayer game with them you also have all of the dlc's during that game.
Something you can do, is you can make a save from that multiplayer game, and then play that save on your own. You still keep all the *instance* of the game meaning you have all of the dlc's for that game.
I don't complain much when it comes to games (kind of hard to in my opinion) but stellaris is amazing from the overall world building and story perspective.
Think about your favorite empire after they hit interplanetary travel. You control the fate of that empire. From the heroes that discover new planets to colonize to the admirals that control your fleets. Those *heroes* come from your planets, you could have a scientist pop that turns into a R&D leader that then gets lost in an anomaly only to show up 20 years later in your game and immortal? that then turns into the leader of your entire empire.
Like just that simple fact of the STORIES you tell after a stellaris campaign is just...insane nothing can beat it.
Its the customization you can add to everything to make it feel like something YOU did, but it actually requires imagination to pull off. You want to make mutants from Xmen? Abduct pops from pre ftl empires, modify their traits and stick them all on the same planet(colony ship + gaia world + forced migration / growth)

I get it. They cut the game apart, but if you listen to the community, follow guides, and advice. You can purchase the DLCs that really matter and download mods to get the full experience. As someone who grew up playing risk, star trek, and WH40k this game is perfect.

  • @gimme88
    @gimme88 Год назад +4

The fact there is so many DLCs is a healthy sign for the game, they are investing time and work into it. The community is very optimistic in general. The DLCs get bad reviews, but everyone buys them. A small content addition is packaged as a DLC. Ordinary mods made by players are much larger than the DLCs in what they add. But i have no problem funding Stellaris. Its a great game. Makes you think and strategize. Spacebattles look good. Every weapon looks different. I have over 4500 hours in Stellaris all in solo single player mode. I use a few mods to expand civics and ethics options. The only issue i have is the late game lag. In all of my 45oo plus hours i have never reached the end game. I mostly like to restart the game after a short play of a few hours. To reach the end game i think you would need to devote days to a single play through. The lag in late game slows the game down and apparently its because it is heavy on the processor of your pc. You can use some mods to tweak graphics and things like make the AI unable to spam construct habitats, but at the end of the day, the galaxy is large and every population you have is being processed by your PC and in the late game it gets slow even if you have lots of RAM. i am doing a test with playing on a 600 star galaxy instead of my usual 1000 star to see if it gives a performance boost or not. I play this game every day and i feel really optimistic about the future of this game, i think it will be played for many years to come hopefully. It sort of requires some willingness to use your brain to play it.. Strategy. And some reading of text boxes. you can play it while chilling at the same time. Great game very relaxing.

the fact that there is som many DLCs is an unhealthy sign for a game. because each and every DLC is designed to be independent of the game and independent of eachother. so, essentially, you just get a bunch of modules added thats closed off from the base game and closed off from eachother, essentially making it a shallow, wasted potential.

When going into games you sometimes need a certain mindset
Planetside: I suck and will die often, don’t get mad over it
Stellaris: I know nothing and need to be patient and curious to learn
Factorio: I will be very bad at the start and need to be patient enough to restart a system from scratch for improvement
It’s the games with the most aggressive learning curves that have some of the best gameplays behind them. Always keep an open mind because you will never be good at a game on first play.

Tbh Stellaris has always felt like a game with a bit of an identity crisis, and all the bloated systems are interesting… in concept, but in execution are way too simplistic in their interactions. Also despite the amount of choices when making your empire, pretty much every game goes the same way. I’ve played it for a while and never thought it was too complicated personally, I stopped because it just felt too stale and the same events etc kept cropping up. Looking forward to the co-op update tho.

The biggest problem stellaris has IMHO is that every game sort of feels the same way. Starting at empire creation most of the choises you make there for traits, civics, ethics, ... are just percentage modifiers that don't change the way you play and just make one aspect of the game slightly better or worse. Every run ends up beeing the smae, with maybe 2-3 diffrent ways to play.

  • @WhenDevilsDuel
    @WhenDevilsDuel Год назад

Yea, if you look into stuff about space you'd be amazed how it coincides with Stellaris. All of the mega structures are actual theoretical things scientists have come up with, the lore of the game follows the most popular theories, such as the big bounce, and it even manages to deal with current day paradoxes - such as why haven't we found aliens. And so much more, for a 4x strategy game it's actually surprisingly deep rather than only strategic.

    • @WhenDevilsDuel
      @WhenDevilsDuel Год назад

Even the crisis thing that you do, is an actual thing already thought up by scientists and IS theoretically possible to do.

Stellaris still suffers many performance issues, and their devs only keep pushing DLC instead of adressing these.
It is understandable how big this game is but everyone rather see them create a new game, or revamp their engine to resolve this issues then them sticking more code onto it.
And it is sad because i really love this game, But even with my Ryzen7 AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT and 32GB of ram it is very stuttery in the end game borderline unplayable.
    Good alternatives are:
Endless Space 2: More of a turn based approach to empire management, awesome factions and empires to pick each with their unique playstyle
Distant worlds 2: Stellaris on steroids, This has to be the biggest game i have ever seen, runs amazing even on massive galaxy sizes (Real time Strategy)
Galactic Civilization 4: Basically Sid Meier civ but in space also manages better on huge galaxies then stellaris.
Hope the devs will fix their broken game or at least we get super computers or some stuff because unless you have 6GHZ single core performance you aint having fun on the end/late game

Sadly im not playing it anymore. It is good that devs are actually responding to the player base but it has also dowsides. For mé personally im not playing it anymore (im sure im not the only one) because it is too complex in many things. In limited free time I have Ive spend weeks learning it and I was at finally getting grasp on things when som other mechanics i didnt pay attention to bit me in the ass. So i štarte learning it. But now comes the downside. They totally reworked fleets and combat. And that was killer for me. Dont get me wrong, im not dissing the game. It is just not for People with limited Free time to finely learn the such complex mechanics, just to len olnd ones again because they changed something... It is amazing game, but sadly not for me

My problem with Stellaris is, unsurprisingly, its dlc. From the boardroom, It's clearly a platform for selling hundreds of dollars in DLC.
Meanwhile, I prefer the equally well thought out and fully modable Distant Worlds 2.
The DLCs are what they, and the complexity they imply definitely isnt the hold back for me... As an indie dev, a grognard, and a tightwad, I'm not willing to support that or at least not that level of shenanigans by a group as large and pervasive as Paradox.
Really though, I'd much rather play X4 or Distant Worlds and mod it to do anything under in the multiverse.
That said, I am glad you get so much joy from it, and I understand why, its just a personal preference.
Maybe if I could literally respawn, I'd give it a shot, but until then, YoLo! 😂

Great video mate. I normally play Paradox historical games, but I do have Stellaris that I bought ages ago. And I did have a great time with it, but stopped playing games for awhile. I am back now, playing Civ V - but this video is good to know that I can still play the base game (I do have Megacorps, got it super cheap one day...).
    Thanks 🙂

The only expansion I recommend at purchase is Distant Stars. I have all of them. I love all of them. I've been playing since launch and I truly do love it when new people pick up this game. Paradox makes awesome games and their DLC release system is one of the friendliest to consumers on the market. Stellaris is not the same game that launched in 2016. It is so much more now.

Stellaris can feel overwhelming to approach for sure. Heck, it can feel overwhelming to come back to after taking a break. But the amount of hours of quality in this game make me feel the price for entry isn't that outrageous. And the devs are very passionate, releasing lots of content even after all these years.

I hate to say this because I don't disagree with you, but this video is a terrible argument.
Your two main critiques of the idea that stellaris is inaccessible (that the breadth of base game mechanics and volume of dlc should defy player expectations) are presented as self-evident.
There is little substance to explain where the ideas ideas come from or why they are wrong; these are catastrophic omissions because your target audience for this argument is presumably people who have decided not to play Stellaris and this audience will inherently need those questions answered.
On the matter of target audience, the video title doesn't reach out to anybody in particular; I personally clicked on it because I wanted to know which game "can not be played" and why, expecting an interesting answer about some obscure game that can not actually be played, rather than a game that I do play that I already know has a lower barrier to entry than it seems.
There is some explanation for why players should be satisfied with the base game, if pain points are assumed to be invalid, which is better arguing than other parts of the video.
Overall, the argument needed less repetition of supposedly self-evident points and more evidence to support them. Perhaps a title change too, like "Why can't new players get into Stellaris?"

Have they added the private sector (vs just the state) yet? Is the AI less dumb yet? Can I trade systems with the AI again? Can demilitarized zones be established in diplomacy?
Is the combat less awful? How heavy handed is the combat meta now?

ngl the biggest thing that always turned me away from stellaris is how often they fundamentally change the game and I have to relearn how to play again, also wars are tedious AF and not really all that fun compared to wars in EU4 or Hoi4 even Vicky 2. With the ship building meta making wars even more tedious annoying and a headache to relearn every time you hop back in.
none of the youtubers who do grand PDX campaigns ever take it to stellaris for a reason
I like stellaris as a concept and it's roleplaying and my love of sci-fi, but it certainly feels like a knock off of EU4 in space after all these years with a lot of it's mechanics

Amazing? I think not. It’s boring and full of nonsense. Example: I started a war with a neighbor empire. I beat all their fleets, I took over all their systems and yet I couldn’t win. I had to settle for a tie/truce because the AI would not give up. When doing some research, it turns out I needed to put troops on all planets (even though I glassed the surface of every planet).
The AI cheats for the sake of challenge or “balance”. I even set up a custom game where the AI would be in full disadvantage and still it was similar level and fleet power to me. Not playing it after that.
