I remember reading a comment on another video about this same topic that he basically invented the current Italian language as we knew it. If that's true, then he was such a good writer he created Italian as we know it today.

Hell is full of people the poet likes and respects. Even his personal enemies. See, IE, the description of Farinata degli Uberti, among the heretics. While Dante, the character, mocks him, because Dante was a Guelph, and Farinata the leader of the Ghibellines, Dante the poet describes him with the uttermost respect, as someone that's not bent even by the pains of hell, and even there is more worried by the destiny of his city than his personal one.
@@Pioneer_DE You do understand that Dante's Inferno is not a religious book, right? He was a poet and a politician, not an apostle. This is something often debated in the Christian community. I don't think babies go to hell. Let's not forget that the thief who was crucified with Jesus and went to heaven with Him was not baptized. ULTRAKILL is based on Dante's inferno (you go through the 9 layers of hell, killing demons n such), so thats why theres a bunch of people referencing it. Also this video references it ALOT
Ultrakill is a video game. The main character is a robot called V1. The game centers around V1 going to Hell because, due to humanity going extinct following a catastrophic war (that it was built for and fought in), they no longer have a source of blood (which is their fuel source). Thus, they go to Hell, so they can use the blood of its residents to stay alive. The game itself is a shooter. Described as "a fast-paced ultraviolent old school first-person shooter" on its Subreddit, it is a rather difficult one, as the game's mechanics are focused around the player being both super-mobile and constantly switching weapons to maintain a point multiplier (and because there's usually bunches of enemies attacking you at once).

I love how Divine Comedy is basically just fanfiction where Dante places himself as the main character and gets complimented by famous poet Virgil Also the Ultrakill references
That's a satirical take made by someone that never read the comedy, that unfortunately many took as a real essay. Dante doesn't place "himself" as the main character. He placed a "Dante" character that Dante the poet never miss an opportunity to describe as weak and clueless, and Virgil scolds him many times. MUCH more times than complimenting him. He did simply because "I did", "I saw" had a more powerful impact that "Mario did", "Mario saw". Also hell is full of people the poet likes and respects.
Note: The King Frederick the Great (of Prussia) portrayed at minute 4:56 is not the king referred to in the video; Frederick the Great of Prussia did not live until around 450 years after Dante's Inferno was written. Actually, the Holy Roman Emperor King Frederick II (of Sicily) was meant, who died about 50 years before Dante's Inferno.
Fun fact: The Divine Comedy is called a comedy because, back then, a comedy means any story that has a happy ending. The Divine Comedy ends with Dante viewing the highest heaven.
I believe you are partly incorrect about that. "Comedy" in that time period actually meant it was written in language of commoners, not just that it has a happy ending. A fictional but historically accurate novel, Inferno, by Dan Brown, mentions this in page 82. "In the fourteenth century, Italian literature was, by requirement, divided into two categories: tragedy, representing high literature, was written in formal Italian; comedy, representing low literature, was written in the vernacular and geared toward the general population... The Divine Comedy was written in the vernacular- the language of the people." No hate to you sir, just something I found interesting.
I couldn’t imagine the amount of suffering that would come from being simultaneously boiled and drowning for all of eternity with the feeling of neither ever going away.
After so long you would actually enjoy it strangley enough, the human brain cannot comprehend time at an infinite scale, after let's say 7 billion years you would only see that existence as bliss
What do you mean "Everything that feels good is bad?". Most things listed for dantes inferno is like murder, fraud, rape, etc. I dont think there is anything that makes you feel good in that sense
9:10 Just wanted to point out that the whole "Ulysses fell off" thing is very inaccurate. At the time they actually thought of earth as round already, in fact, when Lucifer was cast out of heaven and tossed on earth the land that moved away from him (creating the crater that is inferno) shifted to the other side of earth and created a mountain (purgatorio). What Ulysses did was encouraging his crew to get past the pillars of Hercules which signaled the end of the known world and of where man "was allowed" to go. All this because according to him "Fatti non foste a viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza" that is basically "You were made to seek virtue and knowledge, not to be savage and stupid". They made it beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and sailed south until they saw the mountain of Purgatorio right before being hit by a storm and dying. This canto is fairly important as Dante himself sinfully seeks knowledge and wants to trascend human limits. The whole journey through inferno, purgatorio and paradiso is a way for him to purify his soul from sin.
@@mariuszmiroslaw2290 I don't think so. Limbo is reserved for those that lived before Christ and therefore couldn't be truly christian, but still virtuous like a christian would be. Virgil belongs in limbo for example, but Ulysses is guilty of the sin he's assigned.
There usually two explanations for this. The brutal one: you go to hell The one with sugar coding: this was all a divine test and you failed Regardless you go to hell for being depressed
_Inferno_ by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is a science fiction retelling of _Dante's Inferno_ . Definitely worth a read. There was a sequel published something like 30 years later called _Inferno II: Escape from Hell_ .
Great video! 😁 If I were to change something about Dante’s inferno I would change the “eternal punishment,” because being punished for eternity teaches the souls nothing. Punishments are temporary so that you learn from them.
5:43 I don’t normally write comments, and I know I’m probably going to get a lot of harassment for my thoughts, but I need to get this out of my head As someone who has had to deal with suicidal and self harm tendencies since I was around 10, this is extremely messed up. And yes, I know that Dante’s Inferno isn’t actually what’s in the Bible, but because so many people actually believe this is what hell is, I feel the need to say this stuff. These people do not have ANY kind of understanding as to how mental health/illness works, and that is blatantly obvious due to how they victim blame the people who has these thoughts. Now, I’m not talking about people who cause harm to other people, because even if I don’t believe in a god, I do agree that they need to be punished… but making someone who has suffered enough in their real life suffer even more, that is straight up cruel. Like, say someone who has a SH problem and who is very susceptible to outside intervention is shown this kind of rhetoric. They will probably live the rest of their life in fear as to something they have no control over. It’s actually horrible, and I don’t know how people defend this stuff. And, these people will say that god is all loving and all knowing, but if he was why would he put these people through such stuff? And if it’s for a sort of "trial", he’s supposed to be all knowing, right? Wouldn’t he already know how we would respond to such trial? Anyways, sorry if this is worded very weirdly, I’m not the best at wording things in an easily understandable way. But if anyone wants me to expand on something, I’m happy to try my best at doing so! :)
Dante would have been called a Gary Stu if it weren’t for the fact that the dude keeps fainting every five minutes and Virgil has to drag his ass onwards.

My man just neglects them and throws them on one of the worst layers. MFs botta experience eternal physical suffering and every type of disphoria
Almost every philosopher has taught that suicide is a morally wicked act that incurs in some type of punishment. It is not lawful for a man to commit suicide in order to avoid any sorrow in this life, because the ultimate and most frightening evil of this life is death itself, as Aristotle demonstrates (Ethics. iii, 6). To inflict death upon oneself in order to avoid the other ills of this life is to choose a greater evil over a minor one. It is never acceptable to do an evil deed in the hopes that some apparent "good" may result. Furthermore, suicide violates natural law, since everything inherently desires its own good, which means that everything naturally maintains its existence and opposes corruptions to the greatest extent possible. As a result, suicide goes against the inclination of nature. Moreover, it is illicit because each portion is integral to the whole. Now, every man is a member of the community, and hence he belongs to it. As a result, killing himself harms the community, also according to Aristotle (Ethics v, 11). Finally, from a Christian perspective, suicide violates the Law of Love, which states that every man is bound to love himself for the sake of God since he was created in His image and likeness. Additionally, life is a gift from God to man, and it is subject to His authority, "Who kills and makes alive" (1 Samuel 2:6). As a result, everyone who commits suicide sins against God since he usurps judgment over an issue that has not been committed to him. HOWEVER, someone who commits suicide on account of extreme mental confusion and mental disorder is very probably not to be imputed any mortal sin on account of the fact that mental disorder diminishes or extinguishes completely culpability. That which man himself does not do is not imputed to him as a sin. Now "that alone do we seem to do ourselves, which we do with the deliberation of reason" , as Aristotle says (Ethic. ix, 8). When reason does not have a free judgement, there is no sin.
@@tiagotantini My man, do you think I give a shit about what philosophers that don't have the knowledge on mental health we have today thought about suicide? Like, I know it's bad, you don't need to tell me that, but the point is that there shouldn't be a punishment. The person who commits that act was already suffering anyways, punishing said person even more because they are going the "easy way" or whatever bullshit people who think that they are morally supeior make up is just stupid. I didn't need you to tell me what the reasons for it to be sinful are, I already know them, but I also know that they are bad reasons. I don't give a fuck if it breaks the "natural laws", the lack of empathy you need to have to decide to punish someone who only hurt themselves because of your idiotic way of viewing morality is worst than many sins. "Every man belongs to the community" that's a fucking cult. People are individuals, they are themselves, they are not just a part of something greater, that's the mindset of a cult. "If mental health is a reason" oh yeah, cuz I would otherwise be killing myself for the fun of it! Man, if you want to explain why your religion and faith is always correct and try to defend all the stupid, self-centered and disgusting things said by people in the past with to much autoity do it somewhere else.
I never understood why the people who unalived themselves ended up in hell. Like you have suffered in your life and only committed s×icide because you wanted to come to peace, and here you are - even more suffering! It's super unfair!
wish i could repost comments cuz this is an ACTUAL TAKE, it's moronically ironic how they force the people that want to stop the suffering to suffer more
I guess the reason is because some people would commit *self-assasination* in order to avoid getting punished on Earth, or because the "You shall not kill" commandment also applies to yourself... But yeah, I get it, it would make more sense for them to *at least* go to Limbo or to an specific place only for them, where they have to overcome their trauma or whatever made them take that choice to ascend to Heaven
The idea, according to Dante, is that in killing oneself, one is running away from a life that was burdensome. Although (and most just read the Inferno), in Purgatorio, the first spirit you meet is Cato the boatsman, a foil to Charon. He takes Dante to the shore of the mountain; and he was also known by Dante to have committed suicide. It may be hard to fathom why killing oneself should be punished in modern ethics; but we would still be wise to consider the matter from Dante's perspective. To be more open minded and at least consider new ideas.
@@judoaj738 Well according to the bible it could mean just that, since you're rejecting god by throwing away his gift of life. generally suicide is a sin, but I'm not sure if immature children would be counted into it.

2 real
ULTRAKILL is based on Dante's inferno (you go through the 9 layers of hell, killing demons n such), so thats why theres a bunch of people referencing it. Also this video references it ALOT
its like doom, you go to hell and kill demons. The robot you play as needs blood to stay online, and every human died, so there is only blood in hell
They are both masterpieces

I love how Divine Comedy is basically just fanfiction where Dante places himself as the main character and gets complimented by famous poet Virgil
Also the Ultrakill references
That's a satirical take made by someone that never read the comedy, that unfortunately many took as a real essay.
Dante doesn't place "himself" as the main character. He placed a "Dante" character that Dante the poet never miss an opportunity to describe as weak and clueless, and Virgil scolds him many times. MUCH more times than complimenting him.
He did simply because "I did", "I saw" had a more powerful impact that "Mario did", "Mario saw".
Also hell is full of people the poet likes and respects.
Yeah you noticed too!
I was about to comment the same. or maybe dante just had great foresight...
Yeah I was wondering about that too, since by the 1700’s a war between the Pope and the Emperor would be ridiculous
I can’t with the ultrakill references, bro you are the LAST person id expect to make a ultrakill reference in a video, more than once too 😭🙏
Fun fact: The Divine Comedy is called a comedy because, back then, a comedy means any story that has a happy ending.
The Divine Comedy was written in the vernacular- the language of the people."

Betraying and murdering people feels good?
Anyway. Bad assignment. Should have been Limbo.
@@mariuszmiroslaw2290 I don't think so. Limbo is reserved for those that lived before Christ and therefore couldn't be truly christian, but still virtuous like a christian would be. Virgil belongs in limbo for example, but Ulysses is guilty of the sin he's assigned.

5:43
I don’t normally write comments, and I know I’m probably going to get a lot of harassment for my thoughts, but I need to get this out of my head
As someone who has had to deal with suicidal and self harm tendencies since I was around 10, this is extremely messed up.
holy yap
Dante would have been called a Gary Stu if it weren’t for the fact that the dude keeps fainting every five minutes and Virgil has to drag his ass onwards.

The angel coming down to the gates of Dis is such a great part of the story. Because thought the book we hear they are on a mission of God, Virgal has said so constantly and we need to just believe they are. Until the heavenly angel comes down and says so. Now we have concrete proof.

I only noticed the ultrakill references after i got into the game, awesome video bro.
We NEED 1 hour long videos I love these.
0:43 IS THAT AN ULTRA KILL REFRANCE????!!!!
YES
🗣 DIE!! 🔥🔥🔥
PREPARE MYSELF!
WE ARE BEIJG JUDGED!
JUDGMENT
the king has post again🎉🎉
Here are all the clues if not all the clues I can find in order
1. Minos: features Minos prime
2. Second layer // lust: most likely a reference to the levels names of the ultrakill choices, is actually a level too.
3. Sliding (we won’t count this as 3 because it’s subtle and might not be ultrakill related 1:08)
3. Dante’s comedy: feature v1 on the cover art
Gluttony start: features v1 in physical form now, featured in many scenes of gluttony.
4. Railgun weapon thingy: ultrakill weapon (supercharged)
5. Gluttony part 2: Gabriel is featured while talking about perfectionism, Gabriel the prostate of hell is actually a real angel but this uses video game depiction.
6. Wrath: wrath in the background has the endgame robots behind the sword and gun
7. Wrath 3 minutes: includes ferryman
8. Wrath 4 minutes: include Gabriel again, also includes dialogue from Gabriel in ultrakill (using WILL OF GOD)
9. Violence: includes v1 and the death robots at the end game mission fighting.
10. Fraud: v1 sliding
11. Fraud 2: features mindflyer and Sisyphus (game versions)
12. Fraud 3: features endgame robots again.
13. Treachery: v1 at the start
And finally
14. Treason 2: we see v1 again saying “yo”
Bonuses: during the word judgement day we see a tiny Minos, another bonus includes “[+ultra fried]) which is “combo” text lingo
Another bonus is in level 8: fraud gimoniac is holding a scroll with a picture of v1
Another bonus includes tiny text with the screams which are also combo lingo
Probably the best video about ULTRAKILL that never mentions or even slightly hints towards ULTRAKILL (Besides the obvious tiny references)
Uncountable Ultrakill references and a single Rain World reference at 5:58
I noticed it looked like the rain world fruit

5:45 God on his way to give people who commited suicide worst punishments than murderers:
I really don't understand why in christianity and works based of it god just decides to give a terrible punishment to the people who were already suffering when they were alive. My man just neglects them and throws them on one of the worst layers. MFs botta experience eternal physical suffering and every type of disphoria
Thats why im an ex christian
This isn’t actually what any Christians believe this is just some fan fiction from many years ago
@@Splinky0.
This was so informative.
I never understood why the people who unalived themselves ended up in hell. Like you have suffered in your life and only committed s×icide because you wanted to come to peace, and here you are - even more suffering! It's super unfair!
wish i could repost comments cuz this is an ACTUAL TAKE, it's moronically ironic how they force the people that want to stop the suffering to suffer more
Yes the fact you had to fucking censor suicide 😠
@@Being6457 RUclips doesn't like such kind of words, so the comment might be taken down
I guess the reason is because some people would commit *self-assasination* in order to avoid getting punished on Earth, or because the "You shall not kill" commandment also applies to yourself...
6:07 imagine not liking living, and then god says, “Ok ok ok, I bet you REALLLY won’t like THIS.”

The thing that's overlooked here is that after crossing the gates of hell, but before the first river that takes you to Limbo, there's a place where all the people who didn't do anything with their life reside. And Dante(or Vergil I don't remember) says that living a pointless life is even worth that a life o sin. Gow are they punished.
