He placed a "Dante" character that Dante the poet never miss an opportunity to describe as weak and clueless, and Virgil scolds him many times. MUCH more times than complimenting him. Fun fact: The Divine Comedy is called a comedy because, back then, a comedy means any story that has a happy ending. The Divine Comedy ends with Dante viewing the highest heaven.
I believe you are partly incorrect about that. "Comedy" in that time period actually meant it was written in language of commoners, not just that it has a happy ending. A fictional but historically accurate novel, Inferno, by Dan Brown, mentions this in page 82. "In the fourteenth century, Italian literature was, by requirement, divided into two categories: tragedy, representing high literature, was written in formal Italian; comedy, representing low literature, was written in the vernacular and geared toward the general population... The Divine Comedy was written in the vernacular- the language of the people." No hate to you sir, just something I found interesting.
Note: The King Frederick the Great (of Prussia) portrayed at minute 4:56 is not the king referred to in the video; Frederick the Great of Prussia did not live until around 450 years after Dante's Inferno was written. Actually, the Holy Roman Emperor King Frederick II (of Sicily) was meant, who died about 50 years before Dante's Inferno.
What do you mean "Everything that feels good is bad?". Most things listed for dantes inferno is like murder, fraud, rape, etc. I dont think there is anything that makes you feel good in that sense
I couldn’t imagine the amount of suffering that would come from being simultaneously boiled and drowning for all of eternity with the feeling of neither ever going away.
After so long you would actually enjoy it strangley enough, the human brain cannot comprehend time at an infinite scale, after let's say 7 billion years you would only see that existence as bliss
_Inferno_ by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle is a science fiction retelling of _Dante's Inferno_ . Definitely worth a read. There was a sequel published something like 30 years later called _Inferno II: Escape from Hell_ .
Dante would have been called a Gary Stu if it weren’t for the fact that the dude keeps fainting every five minutes and Virgil has to drag his ass onwards.
9:10 Just wanted to point out that the whole "Ulysses fell off" thing is very inaccurate. At the time they actually thought of earth as round already, in fact, when Lucifer was cast out of heaven and tossed on earth the land that moved away from him (creating the crater that is inferno) shifted to the other side of earth and created a mountain (purgatorio). What Ulysses did was encouraging his crew to get past the pillars of Hercules which signaled the end of the known world and of where man "was allowed" to go. All this because according to him "Fatti non foste a viver come bruti, ma per seguir virtute e canoscenza" that is basically "You were made to seek virtue and knowledge, not to be savage and stupid". They made it beyond the Strait of Gibraltar and sailed south until they saw the mountain of Purgatorio right before being hit by a storm and dying. This canto is fairly important as Dante himself sinfully seeks knowledge and wants to trascend human limits. The whole journey through inferno, purgatorio and paradiso is a way for him to purify his soul from sin.
@@mariuszmiroslaw2290 I don't think so. Limbo is reserved for those that lived before Christ and therefore couldn't be truly christian, but still virtuous like a christian would be. Virgil belongs in limbo for example, but Ulysses is guilty of the sin he's assigned.

The angel coming down to the gates of Dis is such a great part of the story. Because thought the book we hear they are on a mission of God, Virgal has said so constantly and we need to just believe they are. Until the heavenly angel comes down and says so. Now we have concrete proof.
The thing that's overlooked here is that after crossing the gates of hell, but before the first river that takes you to Limbo, there's a place where all the people who didn't do anything with their life reside. And Dante(or Vergil I don't remember) says that living a pointless life is even worth that a life o sin. Gow are they punished. 5:43 I don’t normally write comments, and I know I’m probably going to get a lot of harassment for my thoughts, but I need to get this out of my head As someone who has had to deal with suicidal and self harm tendencies since I was around 10, this is extremely messed up. And yes, I know that Dante’s Inferno isn’t actually what’s in the Bible, but because so many people actually believe this is what hell is, I feel the need to say this stuff. These people do not have ANY kind of understanding as to how mental health/illness works, and that is blatantly obvious due to how they victim blame the people who has these thoughts. Now, I’m not talking about people who cause harm to other people, because even if I don’t believe in a god, I do agree that they need to be punished… but making someone who has suffered enough in their real life suffer even more, that is straight up cruel. Like, say someone who has a SH problem and who is very susceptible to outside intervention is shown this kind of rhetoric. They will probably live the rest of their life in fear as to something they have no control over. It’s actually horrible, and I don’t know how people defend this stuff. And, these people will say that god is all loving and all knowing, but if he was why would he put these people through such stuff? And if it’s for a sort of "trial", he’s supposed to be all knowing, right? Wouldn’t he already know how we would respond to such trial? Anyways, sorry if this is worded very weirdly, I’m not the best at wording things in an easily understandable way. But if anyone wants me to expand on something, I’m happy to try my best at doing so! :)

wish i could repost comments cuz this is an ACTUAL TAKE, it's moronically ironic how they force the people that want to stop the suffering to suffer more
I guess the reason is because some people would commit *self-assasination* in order to avoid getting punished on Earth, or because the "You shall not kill" commandment also applies to yourself... But yeah, I get it, it would make more sense for them to *at least* go to Limbo or to an specific place only for them, where they have to overcome their trauma or whatever made them take that choice to ascend to Heaven
The idea, according to Dante, is that in killing oneself, one is running away from a life that was burdensome. Although (and most just read the Inferno), in Purgatorio, the first spirit you meet is Cato the boatsman, a foil to Charon. He takes Dante to the shore of the mountain; and he was also known by Dante to have committed suicide. It may be hard to fathom why killing oneself should be punished in modern ethics; but we would still be wise to consider the matter from Dante's perspective. To be more open minded and at least consider new ideas.

The suicide one is just so cruel. Punishing suffering people with more suffering
dante’s inferno isn’t biblical
it’s not an accurate description of the biblical hell
kinda crazy ur forced to be born just to suffer if u go in the wrong place
The reason Dante said is they are the tree that stopped growing, I think that makes sense, everytime I’ve thought of it I’ve then came back and grown into a better person, we aren’t as powerless as we like to think
It's weird how it is seemingly viewed as being worse than violence against another person
@@elliethejellie Making suicide a sin is meant to prevent people from killing themselves. Yes it's through threat, but the intention is suicide prevention. There is nothing horrible about that

I love how Divine Comedy is basically just fanfiction where Dante places himself as the main character and gets complimented by famous poet Virgil
Also the Ultrakill references
That's a satirical take made by someone that never read the comedy, that unfortunately many took as a real essay.
Dante doesn't place "himself" as the main character. He placed a "Dante" character that Dante the poet never miss an opportunity to describe as weak and clueless, and Virgil scolds him many times. MUCH more times than complimenting him.
He did simply because "I did", "I saw" had a more powerful impact that "Mario did", "Mario saw".
Also hell is full of people the poet likes and respects. Even his personal enemies.
See, IE, the description of Farinata degli Uberti, among the heretics. While Dante, the character, mocks him, because Dante was a Guelph, and Farinata the leader of the Ghibellines, Dante the poet describes him with the uttermost respect, as someone that's not bent even by the pains of hell, and even there is more worried by the destiny of his city than his personal one.
Great video! 😁 If I were to change something about Dante’s inferno I would change the “eternal punishment,” because being punished for eternity teaches the souls nothing. Punishments are temporary so that you learn from them.

0:44 Minos' design is the Prime soul version in P-1, he aldo says his iconic line "Thy punishment is death".
0:56 The Corpse of King Minos is seen in the background.
1:09 V1 is featured in and is also on the cover of my comedic hell journey by Dante.
1:37 Gluttony opens with V1 staring at the weather conditions in the layer.
1:44 V1 is seen holding his shotgun and being alarmed by Cerberus.
2:14 Minos Prime appears again in front of the judgement day text at the bottom.
2:19 Gabriel the archangel appears and says "The light is perfection!", One if his in-game taunts.
2:47 V1 and V2 can be seen battling in the background.
3:00 Benjamin is seen behind the knife. The Violence text is also a nod to 7-1 or the Mannequins.
3:24 Phlegyas' design is the Ferryman from the same layer.
4:13 Gabriel makes an appearance to allow Dante and Virgil passage into the City of Dis.
5:06 The guy choking the guy on the floor could resemble the mannequins.
5:08 The illustration for self-harm is the main tree of blood in 7-3. It is also the art for the soundtrack of that level, Danse Macabre and Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves.
5:40 The speech bubbles contain style bonuses above the text inside.
5:47 The speech bubble contains the bonus [+CHLORO-KILLED], which is not an actual bonus, just a little somethong by the artist.
6:02 Same thing happens here, with [KARMA-KILL] showing.
6:12 V1 is seen battling the 1000-THR Earthmover /Benjamin in the background.
6:27 The guy getting burned by the sand on the floor mentions a style bonus [+ULTRAFRIED] which is a nod to an actual style bonus which is [+FRIED].
7:06 V1 is sliding at the right end of the trench.
7:24 V1 is on the get out of hell free card.
8:02 The designs for the sorcerer and the seer are the Mindflayer and Sisyphus Prime respectively.
9:17 Benjamin returns as a sower of discord.
9:18 Benjamin is in the background looking down on the battlefield again.
9:45 Something Wicked This Way Comes
10:01 V1 is seen again and this time the layers are shown in a manner that resembles how ULTRAKILL shows you which level you are descending to before it starts.

*The IDEA that
@@shadesilverwing0 Hell itself is just an idea, stop being annoying.
The Divine Comedy was written in the vernacular- the language of the people."
No hate to you sir, just something I found interesting.
This was so informative.
Yeah you noticed too!
I was about to comment the same. or maybe dante just had great foresight...
Yeah I was wondering about that too, since by the 1700’s a war between the Pope and the Emperor would be ridiculous

Most of Dante's literature is literally just him saying that, "you're my opps, you deserve to suffer"
Anyway. Bad assignment. Should have been Limbo.
@@mariuszmiroslaw2290 I don't think so. Limbo is reserved for those that lived before Christ and therefore couldn't be truly christian, but still virtuous like a christian would be. Virgil belongs in limbo for example, but Ulysses is guilty of the sin he's assigned.

I don’t normally write comments, and I know I’m probably going to get a lot of harassment for my thoughts, but I need to get this out of my head
As someone who has had to deal with suicidal and self harm tendencies since I was around 10, this is extremely messed up.
