There are so many mechanics I didn't have time to mention in this video but Stellaris is a TITAN of the grand strategy genre. You can pick it up for a great price and it will keep you and your friends entertained for YEARS. And that's before we even look at DLC's or Mods. Already a fan of the game? What would you say to someone wondering whether they should give it a try?

Bought it on console (me having an Xbox). An excellent decision. Takes some time to learn, but the vast amount of tips and tricks videos on YT helps, and when you get going it's fascinating stuff.
The crazy thing is, it plays pretty darn good on console too despite being an RTS, so if you have Xbox (and maybe PS?) but no PC you are still in good hands.

    • @twiglets2

@@amuroray.1690 wow that is unexpected! I had assumed it would be a nightmare on console. I guess you spend your time scrolling through menus?

@@twiglets2 On Xbox, the left and right triggers let you scroll quickly down most longer menus, and once you get to the general vicinity you use the D-pad.
Not quite as good as a mouse, and maybe it's because I never played it on PC, but it doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.

I finished a single playthrough in Stellaris and I can describe that experience with a single word: EPIC. The late game battles all over the galaxy felt like a real war with many actors, all this while playing the diplomatic game in the galactic government, in my own federation (inside which I was dethroned) and trying to manage multiple ties with my allies and vassals. It really felt like managing a huge galactic empire and the stress and joy during some of those moments were real. I can still remember myself sweating irl while trying so hard to win some of crucial fights against superior enemies and the sheer amount of panic when all hell broke loose in the end. If you want a wild roller-coaster ride of emotions this game is for you. However I'm not sure I have what it takes to do a second run. It was very fun and at the same time very demanding and felt relief when I finished it.

I have only 30 hours in. Already have most of the big DLCs I got for cheap on Instant Gaming, so I have quite a lot being thrown at me 😂 My approach to Stellaris is purely reactionary. I don’t have much of a strategy, I don’t aim to win the game, I just try to make the best out of whatever situation the game throws at me. Suprisingly this way of playing is quite fun. So my advice to new players is to watch some short tutorial here on RUclips to learn bare basics and then just play the game, don’t overthink it and when something comes up just hit whatever option you feel it’s alright.

    • @twiglets2
      @twiglets2  Год назад +1

@MartinSurych That's such great advice. It's easy to think "how should I play this game?" When the fun is to play it however the hell you want to!
Out of curiosity what would you recommend in terms of dlc? Specific ones that are best for players to get first?

    •  Год назад

@@twiglets2 That is hard question as I bought them all at once so I don't really know what they do individually in great detail. So far I have these:
      Utopia (must have)
      Nemesis (I wanted Espionage)
      Federation (better diplomacy options)
Overlord (got it for super cheap, I haven't explored it yet much, I am aware that some people don't like it)
      Ancient Relics (adds to atmosphere)
      Leviathans (interesting encounters)
      Apocalypse (fun events, depends :-D)
Distant Stars (can stir things up quite a bit)
Synthetic Down (easier to play, fun to p*ss off)
I am aware that Paradox DLCs often get fair amount of criticism but I highly recommend at least some of them as they do add flavor. Vanilla game is nice but mid and especially late game can get a bit hollow without. I understand that people get p*ssed after spending 15 dollars for DLCs that doesn't have a good release or doesn't have much to offer to fit their playstyle, or in general. Do what I did, get it cheap from Instant Gaming, I've saved almost 2/3 of the price there :-D What DLCs from what I don't have yet would you recommend?

It creates a sense of wonder few games have made me feel. Also I believe that among all the Paradox games, this one is the easiest to learn, since thing are evolving organicaly and there is a logical path for everything you have to do, And lastly of course the base game itself is more that enough to give you a good time, but if your have the money consider buying the DLCs. I was curious about this game as I will be acquiring a steam deck in the near future and have a history of enjoying 4x space games (even though they weren't called that when I started playing them). I appreciate how your review gives good information for decision making (especially the never pay full price bit) and is going to play a role in whether I ultimately decide to get this game. Based on your review it seems like a modern iteration of Malfador Machinations Space Empires IV. That was the game I grew up on and this seems like a modern version that is simplified in some areas and expanded in others. If you have never played Space Empires IV and are not seeking graphic based entertainment it might serve as a lighter introduction to this genre. I say that as it is much easier to step away from Space Empires IV and come back when life allows it. It would also be neat to see you do a review of Space Empire IV as a look into the past video. It is still available on Steam. Thank you for your review, if I decide to play Stellaris it will likely have been influenced by how you presented this review and its information.

I have only played Space Empires IV gold edition. If I recall correctly that was the peak of Malfador Machinations game design, there was a reason I didn't get the 5th edition (not that I can recall it over a decade and a half later). And if I do purchase Stellaris I will come back after getting some time in on it, so that it isn't a surface level reaction. Thanks for the interaction.

I am a long time off and on player of Stellaris. Maybe once a year I download the updates and play it a little. All the "depth" usually distills down to many hours of play only to find you lost fifty moves ago but didn't know it. There are a few bugs they never seem to fix either. Like one of the most basic mechanics of fleet combat can suddenly start reporting incorrect battle results. Or you load a saved game and all the numbers in your empire are screwed up and your formerly balanced economy nose dives into revolt and rebellion. Sometimes the jobs on planets get randomly shuffled around and creates unemployment where there was none before. After seeing these ancient bugs still there I sadly put the game away and wonder if it will be fixed next year.

Overall a Positive take on stellaris, more informative than opinionated which is not always a good thing for a review, after all you WANT the perspective of the reviewer, aka to know thier true opinion. However a balanced review is not bad. As a stellaris content producer (you tube content) and long time player, i do agree with most of this review. DLC could definitely be priced a little lower in most cases. Though once i got dlc i could no longer play the vanilla experience unless i was making a video on it. At this point being handed Stellaris for the first time and expecting to get some enjoyment from playing it in less than 2 days hard learning is like being handed a 7 dimensional Rubik's Cube with 37 to the N faces existing in 42 to the N planes across 12 dimensions, It has mechanics inside mechanics hidden in sub menus inside sub menus. Some of which are vital - others are not. No real way of knowing which is which.
Luckily I got it when it first came out and my on-boarding to this state was gradual. But I dare not leave the game for longer than 6-8 weeks because if I do - there is no way I could pick it back up again without that learning overhead. And I'd probably not bother.

I really enjoy Stellaris, but... The game is constantly evolving. Stellaris as it stands now is vastly different from the earliest version, and the Developers continue to tweak and refine game mechanics as time goes on. That means that the Stellaris you know you enjoy may be rather different after a given patch or DLC, possibly requiring you to relearn the game, or even altering elements with which you were comfortable. I suggest new players interested in but uncertain about Stellaris watch some recent gameplay, to get a feel for how it feels. That said, Stellaris has enormous depth and replayability, so assuming you decide to give it a go, you may expect to get a lot out of it. =^[.]^=

One thing I didn't like is they did away with distinct "Generals" for ground forces, and "Admirals" for fleets and instead just have "Commanders" for both now. To me that's kind of unfortunate. Also spreadsheet sim isn’t fun to me, and from my experience if you want to not bother about economy you can kind of get away with it.
I’m a bit disappointed tbh bc in my head , yeah I’ve built a slave empire, treat this civ as livestock, but all I see is ‘green food icon go up’. I’m left to imagine everything else myself. There’s no rebellion or popup. Battle thralls, livestock, indentured servitude, chattel slavery: all these options but what do they matter/how are they different beside a number on the list?
Espionage straight up does nothing, interesting techs are locked til the end game meaning most games you don’t even get to them Bc like CK late games becomes tedious and laggy with a whole empire.
Also disappointed in religion. Coming from CK where it’s such a big part, I feel like they could add a whole religion system to Stellaris that could impact your culture and values, but as it stands materialism vs spiritualism is just so bland.

What you have here is a 19 minute and 47 second ad for the game and a large number of Paradox paid people claiming its a good review. Stellaris is a crappy board game placed in space. The game is full of bugs, game ending glitches, and events that destroy game play. After overcoming the silliness of having space highways in the void of the galaxy you will expand and may even fight a small war or two before everyone joins up in massive alliances that basically prevents wars. Then if a war does break out between huge alliances war exhaustion will end the war at status quo before ever finishing. Therefore, the game just becomes a boring slogfest of research and building, waiting for the "endgame" event... which will be the biggest anti-climactic thing in any game. It is usually defeated before it even reaches you, or before you can help fight it. Waste of money, and this is even before the Paradox modus operandi of creating a half-finished game and then selling you the rest in multiples DLCs. Cost you over $100 just for a base game that sucks. You were warned.
