Anno 1800 has a lot to offer a wide variety of gamers. It's advertised first and foremost as a city builder, which it is but I would argue the economic side of the game is more prevalent. It can also be confusing trying to work out how much military / RTS the game contains and how far the multiplayer possibilities stretch. This is a chunky video but I hope it answer your questions. If not, just leave me a comment to ask questions and if you already own the game, let us know what you think!
That's one of the best Anno 1800 reviews I've seen and one of the best game reviews I've ever watched. And I've watched a lot of them! Thank you!
@@timbader898 thank you for the kind words sir, I hope you found it useful!
Suggestions for other games to review are always welcome as it's difficult to know which one to choose next!
you should mention the whole alternative starter game window and more to deal with the DLC compadablity issue. I and many others got victimised by this.
Is Anno 1800 Worth It? Maybe if they remove Denuvo it would be worth buying and playing.
Best game ever, also one of the only games recently to go back to its roots and actually build upon what was great. 10/10 for me.
@liammorris1018 Glad to hear you're enjoying the game! Do you have any recommendations for DLCs that other players should try?
@@twiglets2 All of them add something great, can give the decoration DLCs a miss but the rest add really interesting mechanics, new islands and product chains.
The funniest thing is in my honesty opinion if it had all the different regions simple had on the same map it would have been even more amazing but oh well I just love my old school some Anno 1602 style these trade routes and multiple maps are annoying imho
@@dog209 I just forget about the other maps, concentrating so hard on the new world map while my old world islands are being taken over without me realising...oops!
13/10 for me!
I really like how you actually answer real questions that come to mind when looking into a game instead of just meeting some youtube algorithm or whatever. Good review!
@TheRealFoop Thank you, I hope it was useful!
If there are any other games that should have a similar review please let me know!
I urge anyone who hasn't already to play this game. It is AWESOME.
@ghostlightx9005 Agreed!
I'm actually scared to play 10-14 hours without breaks again like I did in Anno 1404 T_T
Is this better than age of empires 4?
@@user-MFTIyes
I'm more of a Total War kind of guy, though. I like to focus on combat and less on city building.
One thing that Anno does so well that any other game falls short is really simulate on a basic level society in general. The more complex you make your society the more complex their needs are. Once you start growing your society you need more, and more, and more and you need to keep growing, consuming more, building up to grow. It really puts into perspective how society compounds on top of each other and how demanding it is to grow.
@thomasjames9678 it makes for the perfect challenge!
Great review, loved the 60 second TLDR!! Gave me enough info to know I wanted to know more. The whole review was value added.
@catsanddogsplaytime2914 Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful, that's exactly what I was aiming for.
Yes thanks
Really nice review. I like the way you've laid out each section, tldr, DLC, gameplay. Very useful.
@NunSuperior Thank you, I'm glad it was useful!
Hey, this is a great way to structure a game review. Much superior than massive channels that should know better! Keep it up!
@neithanm Thank you! I hope you found it useful my friend
Your description at 15:40 is absolutely lovely and I couldn’t agree more. I just got back into this game and I’m messing around with the creative mode as I’m more of a city builder than an economic player. It’s been so great and enjoyable. A work of art really.
@aoaoldian6742 I'm glad you agree! Such a flexible game and so accessible to a variety of players. They did a great job!
@@twiglets2 yes and I’m just now discovering the beauty of it in my own way. A secret you express well in your video.
I love how you organized your video, everything about it. Wonderful review!

A highly effective and useful review. You gave me the vital information I need to make a decision. And while Anno 1800 is not for me, I'm looking forward to watching your other reviews. Thanks!
Just watched this video which is one of the best most concise informative looks at a game I've ever seen. I immediately subscribed if your other content is even remotely close to this. Well done.

This review is really awesome. All my questions are answered here! Thanks!
@rimara14 you're welcome, I'm glad you found it useful! Did you decide to purchase in the end?
@twiglets2 I actually already had the game, I got it for free from epic store years ago. I just got the time to play some game. So I dug through my game library and try to find chill builder game. I'm not really sure if anno is what I'm looking for, reading and watching some reviews didn't really help me and I don't want to waste hours watching people's game play just to know what the game is about, until I watch your comprehensive review. Really help me understand what countless hours of my time would be spent for. Once again thanks!
1st time here. Your review was awesome i was a bit leery on 22 mins but as i watched was captivated the entire time. Thoughtful and introduces the idea of waiting for a sale some folks cant wait and its nice to encourage folks to save. Any who im now a subscriber and have an opportunity to purchase at the 75% off mark. I love me a management game
@blestplays Thank you my friend I hope you found it useful! Gotta love a sale and saving a bit of money, especially on a game as good as anno 1800! Let us know how you get on with it
I dont usually comment on videos, but the way how you're crafted this video, with every detail and every question that comes to someone mind who plans to play this game, is absolutely perfect. Youve earned a sub my friend! Please keep these comprehensive reviews up, they really do help us fellow gamers out a lot.

Great video. Informative and well organized. Thanks!
@Disco_Dan i hope you found it useful! Will you be making a purchase?
Great review. I mostly used this as a reminder how to play the game as I am getting back into it and there is a lot to learn. I felt that you hit all the main points.
@fission2392 I hadn't considered it as a returning player refresh before, interesting! Glad it was useful!
What an amazing video, you completely sold this game to me! This video should have way more views. Everything from gameplay to tips to explaining who would enjoy the game, was so well thought out and executed. Great work Twiglets! (PS, you should make a Crusader Kings 3 video if you haven't already)
@tetzy3882 Thank you! I'm glad you found it useful.
Funny you should mention Crusader Kings 3, I've been struggling to decide what my next video should be (after Detroit Become Human) and CK3 is very high up that list. Your PS is incredibly helpful - so thank you!
I had to like and subscribe because of your great description and what to expect within the first two min and you make me want to try this game out!
@McCology thank you my friend I hope it was useful! Anno is a great game, very relaxing to play
I’ve just purchased this on steam for £12 as it’s on sale with 1 day left, I’ve always been intrigued about the anno games as I’ve played civ 6, total war, and cities skylines which I never massively found user friendly however this looks great and I’m excited to try it!
@Brandonyves Exciting! Let us know how you get on
Love the content style mate, straight to the point.

@alexpoole3549 You're welcome! I hope it was useful
great indepth info! ty for posting
@voilettenaturals Thank you for watching!
On a sale I would definitely say the Seasonpasses are worth buying. Most of the DLCs add lots of content - and even the smaller ones (like Bright Harvest) add interesting new mechanics to the game.
That said though, the base game alone is enough to get a good feel for the game - People who haven't played any Anno yet and are looking into this series might want to consider just buying the base game, it has lots of content to offer by itself and is a "complete" experience in a sense that you get to know and experience all the major mechanics tha game has to offer. The DLCs basically just add onto this experience and expand the mechanics to add more challanges.
Considering the building part of the game: Anno 1800 has lots of freedom compared to its predecessors, the game uses new mechanics (that were introduced with Anno 2205 I think?) which lets you design your city more freely. You can built very beautiful cities that are still super efficient without having to rely on perfect layouts, it's worth looking at some screenshots from players to see what amazing looking cities you can build - if this is what you like you should also consider buying some of the Cosmetic DLCs because those add some nice stuff to decorate your cities. On the other hand, if beautifying your city is not your thing you can totally go for a factorio-like playthrough you optimize your islands to the last single tile available in order to maximize production, profit or population numbers.
And by the way: Anno 1800 has very good mod support, the last 2 updates added a modloader (which was made by modders and in cooperation with the Devs added to the game) and a mod-browser that makes installing mods insanely easy. The modding community is VERY talented - some of these mods can be considered DLCs by themselves, adding new population tiers, many new houses, decorations and production chains. If you don't want to buy the DLCs you might find lots of new content for the base game with mods.
@-force-2339 That's very interesting regarding mods, thank you!
From what I can tell the DLC's can help each player tailor the experience to their liking. It's not often you find a game that has a very solid base game experience and a nice mixture of reasonably priced DLC's. And don't even get me started on the soundtrack!
Yeah I wanted it but didn't want to pay 80 for it. Now it's 20 CND so I'm stoked to play it.

The Only series in the modern gaming industry that improved and excelled on almost every aspect from the last generation of Anno games instead of regressing in nearly every single way like so many other franchises ESPECIALLY STRATEGY ONES, I swear Anno is a diamond in the ROUGHHHH
The series other than Anno 2205 has been good. This is easily the best one for me which is rare to say in any series today.
As someone looking for something new in the colony/logistics/automation, you convinced me! What helped is that it explained what the game is and isn't. Songs of Syx + Farthest Frontier will be others i might play in the near future :)

Any anno fan knows that complex supply chain management boils down to introducing a central hub and then introduce large storage in order to get inertia. Then you just expand production on that good. That way you always got enough without stress
Thanks for your clear, rational and easy to understand explanation.
@G-Man01 you're welcome! I hope you found it useful. Have you decided to purchase the game?

I have owned this game since the beginning but kinda never understood the process or what it was. As a result, became intimidated by it. After your review...I realized this is the perfect game for me. You answered all my questions for this game. Love the review thanks.
@Jonathan02937 I'm glad to hear it - happy gaming!
A thing I never liked with Anno is the tendential necessity to use optimal building management. In the beginning you just start out the way your problems appear but you soon realize that you cannot build the way you want to if you want to reach higher levels.
Sure you can build the way you want, thats the most plezant thing in this game, for me? I cant find any citybuilder game so beautifull as it visual is, you can also build on your own speed, best series ive seen in years👍
@@-force-2339 I enjoyed being able to create good looking cities while still keeping them somewhat efficient (I'm sure others would hate their inefficiency!) Not a huge fan of following templates to min/max, though I understand why others find it appealing, but I did have to do it in the latter stages of the game to stop me from drowning!
EXCELLENT video structure. **Standing ovation**
@HarmfulMorgy *takes a bow* thank you! I hope it was useful :)
If you want good DLCs, grab Sunken Tresures for sure. This gets you a massive OP island, and diving for treasures. Then get Season 4. Season 4 basically improves the New World, which is a major part of the game, and also introduces the mail system and airships. Everything else is more zones, and more features that are more quality of life than they are necessity. Sure if you can get bundles on sale, then go for it. But overall if you want to start, get Sunken Treasures, most of Season 4, then expand from there if you want to
@braize6279 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the DLCs, very useful!
You can unlock all dlc for free with dlc unlocker :) look it up on yt
Currently on Steam sale (until 28 Nov) for $15. I've played many Anno games, including Anno Online, so I was very interested in this video. I just want to see if it's just The Same Old Anno before I buy.

As an Anno lover (my first anno game was 1701 physical copy of which i still have) I gotta say Anno 1800 is probably the best one so far, I only wish we could have armies like in 1701 where you can fight opponents, destroy their buildings, take over islands that way, but apart from that it's a perfect game. :)
@kingjasko Glad to hear it from a long time player! I've heard mixed opinions from those who have played anno games for years but it's good to hear anno 1800 has been generally well received.
Maybe a dlc that lets us fight with armies? My fingers are crossed!

i do like this review, nice explanation of what the game is really about by a player who is experienced, i feel like it's a little cities skylines and tropico factory's management in one game, i decided to buy the game and dlc's on steam sale.
@mo0shii I'm glad you found it useful! Let us know how you get on, especially with the DLCs
I remember seeing Anno 1602 at Walmart when I was a teenager and I wanted the game so bad. I asked my mom if we could get it and she said no. When I went in again all copies were gone. Eventually she got the game and I was super excited that I haven't felt the same way ever since. I think she mostly got it for my younger brother as he got super into it as well and we ended up sharing the same CD at the same time. The person without the CD didn't have access to the music but you could still play multiplayer by taking the disc out and giving it to the other person to launch. The game looks exactly like Anno 1602 but better fidelity graphics. The buildings are the same artwork. Unfortunately, I won't be getting Anno 1800 as I am all Annoed out and the futuristic games just ended up boring me.
got it earlier this week. It's interesting how it is super slow paced, taking hours and hours to get a town done, but also pretty stressful at the same time, because you're constantly balancing resources to meet the demands. Definitely a fun game if you're into that strategic supply/demand production chain building, with fun decoration building on the side.
I'd emphasize that the game does need some spare time like all these sandboxy games, 20-minute session really isn't enough.
@Feuerex good points, I do like how they have a creative mode to take the stress out of the game. I appreciate the balancing resources aspect but considering how good looking the game is, it's fun to just build.
Great video, great channel
@ryguy037 thank you!
This is one of the few games (if not the only one) I regularly buy the DLCs and updates. Worth every penny invested. Hours and hours of fun. Top 10 games ever.
In your opinion, is it similar to CivCity: Rome, if you know this game? Because from your review, I found many shared aspects between the two games, and I am really into this genre of video games. Also, I would like to know breifly your opinion on camparing this game to Banished, because I want to buy the modern city-building game and I want to pick between Anno 1800 & Banished.
Lastely, thank you so much for this detailed and useful review. You truely addressed all important aspects when it comes to purchase a game.

@ThrottleFox no problem, I'm glad it helped! Let us know how you get on with the game! I have a tips and tricks video for beginners that you may find useful too.
My farmer residence populations are stuck on 10/13, so I can't upgrade to workers. Basic needs show "perfect." What do I need to do? Thanks.
Very good video. But to be fair the music section should have been 16h long instead of about a minute - Dynamedion really delivered on that front. After playing Anno 1800 for 500 hours I have some small additions:
* Multiplayer: you can play "against" each other as separate factions but there is also coop where you manage the same "island" together as one with up to 4 players. One of the main ways of playing the game for me.
* Expeditions do not only result in items to make the island more attractive via zoos and museums. The mechanics of changing production chains, population needs and ship capabilities via items is super important - even more in late game.
* Regarding the DLCs I'd recommend to try the base game and if you like the gameplay just buy all seasons when discounted.
@anteaters4455 Thank you for the additional info, exactly the sort of thing I like to see!
The music is glorious and I have many of the tracks on the playlists I listen to while I work. There is some filler on there of course but its also masterpiece after masterpiece!
You can unlock all the dlc’s for free with dlc unlocker! Saved me a lot of money, love the game so far
I think the only drawback is to have to micro control the island to island share goods manual, too much micro control at late time. should be a general pool between island option through some special building, related to ship quantity to assign based in good requirements to move. or something like that.
@inakidb 100% agree, that would be way more fun
If David Attenborough were to ever review video games. Excellent and detailed review! Sub'd!
@Lonewolf-YYR Thank you! I hope it was helpful
Good job! The heart of ANNO games is logistic and space well used. Money and population are just consequence. ANNO 2250 routes system turns that version bored because there's no way to use our initiative to create good solutions. This why yet I do prefere the 2070 version. Also, the flying cars of harbors in 2070, well used, brings another aproach to ANNO games! I'm not yet well suited with ANNO 1800.
If possible, a video about ANNO 1800's routes and logistic should be interesting. I'm using the concept of "distribution centers" from where ships with a type of good per slot feeds the city islands. Manage more than 5 great islands is impossible without that (we are reaching our 7th large populated island and should be reaching 150.000 citizens until 2024, for example). Seems that this ideas can be used in ANNO 1800 but I'm not yet so sure about it.
Anyone know what the difference is between the base game , Year 5 Gold Edition and Definitive Annoversary ?? All are on sale for another 6 days and I'd like to get the best bang/game product for the buck. Thanks for any input.
@giguy2002 I believe the year 5 gold edition includes all 4 season passes and the deluxe pack, whereas the definitive annoversary is literally everything.
So I reckon that means the gold edition doesn't include some of the cosmetic packs. Hope that helps! If not, there are a few websites that break them down for you
Great 60s summary
Thank you!
@dmitripopov8570 Thank you!
How do you go into first person view on ps5? Awesome content btw!
@LightningCube7 Apparently you have to press a bunch of directions on the d pad which seems strange. On pc they mention it in the list of controls so might be worth a look there?
One of my absolute favorite games! Absolutely worth it!
@Narxes081206 Glad to hear it! Are there any DLCs you would recommend to players?
@@twiglets2 definitely Docklands and Sunken Treasures to start. Docklands will really help with some of the resources management and Sunken Treasures because of a Crown Falls, giving a large island for building.

Such glowing reviews on a review… after watching I understand. I wonder if there is a way to brand your style of review… comprehensive? Deep dive? Like mortismal’s “100%”. You have a great review style.. i wonder what it is. “What it’s like to play?” Players review? Ok im done brainstorming. Gonna buy the game now
@purpleAiPEy Haha I've tried calling it a few different things. Comprehensive is the word I currently use, but the theory behind it is after watching the video you know what it's like to actually play the game, what you actually do etc. I find many review videos just give their opinion and vague detail which I find unhelpful as we all have different tastes. Thanks for the brainstorm!
@@twiglets2 When you said what it's like to play during the review I said "Finally! Someone who gets it!"
And wow the reception to your review shows that you're doing something right. But I guess the next question is, do you reaaally want to make reviews to become a "content creator"? I mean, you could, but would you want to.
Good luck with it either way and thanks for the review.
...Maybe "What's it like to play X: A comprehensive review" I wonder if What's it like fits into a title preview. W.I.L.P.
Lol. hmm maybe not. Alright brainstorm over thanks again.
Glad I watched this. Looks good but I don't think this game is for me.
Btw, excellent review! Very thorough and informative. Subbing!

Darn, I can't believe I've ignored this game for so long just on the basis of it being an Ubisoft product. This seems right up my alley. I'll pick it up on the next Steam sale.
@caspertrog1046 I doubt you'll regret it!
I wish you could place curved roads like you can in Tropico, that's my only complaint so far! Game is amazing!!!
@snookamusss agreed, that would be a cool feature!

@marklammers7863 such an amazing game! Have you picked up any of the DLCs yet???
I got them all. I have played now for more then 2000 ours in the game. But i still find the game fun to play. i have now a safe with more then 4 mil pop. without using docklands for trading or using mods.@@twiglets2
Incredibly well made video! However absolute shame what happened to this game, I bought it on launch and couldn't get a single person I know who's played Anno before to buy it. I honestly don't think it's an understatement to say that in 20+ years of gaming, I've never seen a more disastrous decision for a franchise to make than adding the seperated maps. Noone who tried the game with me in on trials could stand it, and this was the eventual decision for me to quit it and never come back. I got 55 hours (barely anything for an Anno game) out of this 60€ Steam pre-order game and despite the DLC's having always looked interesting, I don't think I'm ever reinstalling it :( Just watching the occasional video out of curiosity. Massive shame and hopefully they don't do the same thing with the next one, if there even will be a next one :/
@spehsdandy1507 I do find the separated maps difficult to deal with, but I didn't realise long time players of the Anno series would feel so strongly against it.
Do any other elements of Anno 1800 put you off, or is it just the separated maps?
@@twiglets2 It's a fantastic game otherwise, it had many issues at launch but they were all ironed out over time. It is purely the map switching, you need to keep the maps in your mental space at all times without being able to simple glance over (can't just relax and build), in addition sending ships out of map for an extended period of time to travel between the maps is very jarring. Maybe the best way to describe it is, after 55 hours for me it got so tedious that I didn't have it in me anymore.
The friends I did get to try it all agreed the main map gameplay was really fun aswell. Even if they sacrificed say 30% of the graphical quality in order to fit all maps into 1 giant map, this game would be the best Anno ever and nothing would come close (to us at least).
Base game is on sale now at 75% off which is a cheap entry point. However if I don't get the complete edition(-55%) now, it will cost me 20% more to add in all the Season Passes. I have played other city sims but not Anon. Decisions decisions. :(
@darrentan7958 the base game on its own is big and a very decent game. The DLCs are great but certainly not a requirement so you could always get the base game now, have a great time then pick up DLCs later!
If you like managing production chains and playing tetris, Anno might be the game for you =P
Knowing the optimal combinations is only half the battle, fitting them all in on irregularly shaped islands the other half XD
@danjal87nl You have hit the nail on the head for me. I would spend 10 minutes finding the solution to a problem, move the buildings around and then find I've created 3 new problems! I quite enjoy it really
My Anno 1800 looks different in campaign mode. But great game thanks for the Vid.
@Bounty_Hunter84 You're welcome!
great video
@raiyyan8514 Thank you! I hope it was useful
CAN SOMEBODY please tell me why its not a good idea to mix Anno 1880/Any anno economics gameplay together with American conquest like military RTS gameplay?. Because for me that will be LEGENDARY. Imagine managing your countries economy to the level Anno games allow and at the same time using what ever economic prowess your empire has to fund your armies which you can control at the level of American Conquest/Divide nation.
This plus more diplomacy and politics (think Tropico) would be amazing, but sadly nothing like that exists so far.
Thanks
Lets go, just bought this game
@CfspottedNL Excellent news, let us know how you get on!
