      Substituted for a year and honestly I saw my role as being a glorified baby sitter. I'd go in, write out the lesson plans on the board, and tell them they could listen to music w/headphones, talk quietly, and have snacks. They behaved well and did their work; even the so-called "bad classes" rarely gave me issues and if they did, I simply just left a detailed note rather than yell and fuel the fire. Substitutes lack the same level of respect as actual teachers and just seeing substitutes acting like they're tough both as a working adult and remembering from my time as a high schooler, it just never works

    I was the cool substitute. Let kids eat, talk quietly, and listen to music. Amazing how when you treat young adults as young adults, they respect you. Once substituted for a strict teacher that wouldn't let his kids go to the school food store they had on Fridays to get snacks. He left in his notes that they were not to go yet some tried to ask if they could. Told them they couldn't, BUT if they needed to go to the "restroom" then they could go. Didn't take them long to get what I was saying

    • @BulletTheEnforcer
      @BulletTheEnforcer 3 года назад +42

      Amen to that. I substitute taught for 2 years. I didn’t just sit in the classroom; if I could, I would actually help the kids with their homework. I felt that I was too soft or that the kids were trying to pull a fast one on me because all of the other teachers seemed to have trouble with this “bad class” but I didn’t. Obviously I must’ve been doing something wrong because how could I have better classroom control and a better rapport with the students than a certified teacher? An older teaching assistant who was working with me at the time pulled me aside one day and said “The kids aren’t lying to you. They actually like you because you listen to them and treat them with respect. She is horrible to them when you are away. I know because I’m in class with her.” The other teacher whom I was working with, horrible one, chalked up the kids liking me to them thinking that I was “attractive.” I’m a male. This teacher kept constantly making comments about how “attractive” I was and that’s why the kids were into me. She told me that I had a knack for teaching, but she knew better because she had been teaching for 30 years. I took her at her word, but after a while I started to do my own thing. Why? Because I was getting better results. I don’t say that to be arrogant. I was literally having other teachers compliment how well-behaved the students were when I was in class. I simply treated them the way that I wanted to be treated.

      I agree. Subbing in high school is different from subbing in elementary school and middle school. Students in elementary school and middle school are often excited about tickets, the 7-UP game, the 4 corners game, passing out papers, etc, but in high school, the students don't care about things like that.
      When people sub for 11th and 12th grade classes, they typically don't have as many problems with students throwing paper balls across the room, throwing paper airplanes across the room, and running around the classroom. Throwing paper balls across the room, throwing paper airplanes across the room, and running around the classroom are behavior issues that are common among elementary school kids, middle school kids, and high school freshman. Throwing paper balls across the room, throwing paper airplanes across the room, and running around the classroom tend to decrease by 11th grade.

You adjust like you do with any job and you have days where it is apparent early on you're just getting through THAT DAY. My goal is basically to not end up as one of these folks who detonates on a kid, so I know myself and my limits...which is to say no more middle school because I'll literally end one of those kids. I do agree with you how older high school kids act differently than elementary school kids, middle school kids, and younger high school kids. Behavior issues such as throwing paper balls across the room, throwing paper airplanes across the room, and running around the classroom are common among elementary school kids, middle school kids, and high school freshmen, but those kinds of behavior issues decrease by 11th grade. When people sub for 11th and 12th grade classes, it's typically not common to have behavior issues such as throwing paper balls across the room, throwing paper airplanes across the room, and running around the classroom.
      Elementary school students and middle school students typically like passing out papers, taking attendance sheets to the office, getting stickers, getting tickets, etc, but high school students typically aren't interested in those kinds of things.
