  • Auto bed leveling is an excellent upgrade to any 3d printer. In this video, I go over how to install and setup the new Creality CR Touch auto bed leveling kit on an Ender 3/Ender 3 Pro with a Creality 4.2.2 mainboard, the process is the same if you have the 4.2.7 mainboard. I walk you through all parts of the process, including installing the hardware, upgrading the firmware, and making the necessary changes in Cura to allow it to run at the start of each print.

I am a 76 year old retiree who likes to tinker and I bought my (now 13 year old) Grandson an Ender 3 for Christmas 2 years ago. It was a big hit and he has done very well with it. I decided to buy one for myself to entertain him on his visits down to our house and he helped me assemble it and we printed a couple of things before he went home. I decided to upgrade a couple of things to enhance the printing capabilities and thinking now that I would have left well enough alone.
I first upgraded the extruder feed from plastic to metal at the suggestion of my grandson (no problem with this). Then I upgraded the bed to a Creality Glass Bed and replaced the springs with the
“upgraded” Springs from my Creality Kit from Amazon: ( Creality Upgrade 3D Printer kit with Metal MK8 Gray Alloy Extruder + Capricorn Bowden PTFE Tubing(1M) + Bed-Level Spring 1.75mm Filament for Ender 3/3 Pro/CR-10 Series/10S/20/20 Pro Printers). I have had leveling issues since I installed the glass bed upgrade and the new springs, but instead of beating my head against the wall trying it over and over, I purchased the CR Touch Auto Leveling Kit. That is how I found you. I watched your YT Video: CR Touch Install Guide - Complete Walkthrough! and there are a few things I cannot wrap my head around:
1.) How do I know if the Firmware got installed. I really don’t know if there is a difference in the descriptions under “About Printer” after my (two) attempts at downloading to the Micro SD and turning the printer on after putting the MSD card into it. Unfortunately, I did not take notes about what it said BEFORE I attempted to update the CR Touch (without Filament sensor) Firmware. I will say that it threw me off when I went to Creaality.com/downloads and found that it was a totally different look than what you showed in your “Walkthrough, but I figured out how to eventually find it on the NEW LOOK web page and later realized you did a YT Video on that too. I THINK I downloaded it correctly and followed the instructions, but when I got it back together, and went to Auto Home, the Extruder Head ONLY went tot eh Left Front Corner and did not go down in Z position. 2.)
2.) I was thinking that since I disconnected the Z-Stop wires on the motherboard (as instructed), how does the head know where Z HOME is?? IN the Video, your printer head proceeded to the middle of the bed after homing in on the left right corner AND it went down in Z. My Printer just stopped after reaching left front position at the same height the I had it set when I was working on it with the steppers disabled.
3.) Is there I way I can verify if I got the Firmware installed properly?
4.) One of the YT Videos I watched said NOT to install the “Upgrade” leveling springs (Orange) and that the original springs work better. Not sure what to believe at this point, but I seemed to be closer to getting it leveled BEFORE I installed the glass bed and Orange springs. That said, I could never get a perfect print on the Test Print download pattern
5.) Thank you for ANY Tips you might have with answers to my questions would be MOST appreciated. I will keep studying your Videos to see if I am missing anything, but my Ender 3 (least expensive one) is not acting like yours after I install the CR Touch.

VERY HELPFUL VIDEO. I followed it step by step. However, an issue arose for me when calibrating the Z-axis. I do all steps verbatim, but when it comes time to save the settings, I get a loud beep, (different from the one heard in the video), and nothing appears to update. My original Z was set to 9.7 and I calibrated it to +001.5 which was paper thin. I then calibrated my Z-probe offset to match this, stored settings, but when I hit level bed, the nozzle rose way higher than normal. Trying to run a test print kept the nozzle at the same, higher height and just wasted a bunch of filament. Any help would be SO MUCH appreciated. I'm about to shred my engineering degree. Thank you for the detailed video! Your good explanation helped working through all the steps. However, I installed my CR touch on an Ender 3 Max and it was a little different to yours.
The fan shroud does not need to be removed and - as already mentioned in the comments - the z-Stop connector was glued down with a lot of gloop, so I disconnected the end, which is directly at the z-stop instead. Also, as mentioned by other comments as well, the gantry bumps into the z-stop mount, if the bed is not lifted sufficiently. The springloaded screws need to be almost completely up.

Given the Z switch is often glued in on the board, and there seems to be some discussion about whether it should be removed or not, I found it easier to remove that cable at the switch end. This way, you can easily reconnect / disconnect it without having to take off the bottom panel, and you never have to battle the glue.

    Excellent introduction, really appreciated!
I followed every single step in video to complete my CR touch installation: set and saved Z offset, then bed leveling and saved again, all completed without problem. But when I ran the bed level test (CHEP_bed_level_print, the one with squares), I noticed that nozzle was at least 2-3mm from bed. I also tried to create my own test with slicer. After bed leveling before print, when it was drawing the straight line on left edge of bed, I found the nozzle was too close to bed at the beginning, then continously lifted. It seems the bed was tilted. I even tried to loose 2 front leveling knobs, still no luck.
I've done many times the whole setting adjustment procedure, still can't solve this problem. Have you ever seen similar problem? Many thanks.

Zishi looks like we all have the same problem, I thought it was just me.
When we install the CR Touch, We need to leave it plugged in on the mother board and just disconnect it on the Z Switch and remove the switch, This way it makes it MUCH easier when you have to go back to using the Z switch, Just disconnect CR Touch,, Mount and plug in the Z switch, Install firmware with NO BL or CR Touch in it, Manual level, THEN PRINT again- Finally.
My CR Touch worked great for 12 to 14 prints, NOW I cant get it to print right, Don't know what I did.., While printing with CR Touch my nozzle would slowly raise up to 0.77 all by itself from 0.3, CR Touch on sale $15.00.---- SOLD that was quick, SO I took a 25 dollar hit.

Just gave it a shot, though nothing appeared to happen once I put in the SD card with the BIN file on it. Checked it over to make sure it's the same exact BIN required for my base Ender 3 based on if it has a filament sensor (i've never heard of such a thing, so I assume it doesn't have one) and the HW and SW versions. Everything checked out, so now I'm wondering if my SD card is the reason, like you mentioned, it isn't working. It is the basic MicroSD that came with the printer (which has had some trouble recently, sometimes giving me a "SD INIT FAILED" and requiring a quick and unfortunate reformat when it is connected to my computer) so i'm going to go ahead and buy a new one and see how it fairs. You make it look so easy but I ran into so many problems that you didn't. I installed the sensor and flashed the firmware easily but then the problems started. I measured the z offset as you did except following the Creality instructions I did it cold and got -0.7, entered it and moved to doing the bed level routine and the probe was off the edge of the bed. After some digging online and getting some support from a 3DP discord I'm on I set the X offset to -44 (from the -30 it was set to) and the Y offset to -9 (from the 0 that it was set to). That brought the probe onto the bed and it was able to run the leveling routine. My first test print had the nozzle SMASHED into the bed so hard no filament could extrude. I measured the z offset again and it was the same, -0.7, but I decided to start walking it up anyway. A few more tries with no improvement and I finally warmed everything up to try and measure the z offset that way, this time it was +0.3. That's a BIG difference. Well, that was also very wrong as I ended up with the opposite problem and a terrible first layer. I started stepping the z offset down and didn't get a good first layer until I got to -0.3. Good grief, none of this is making much sense at this point. I got a successful test print but then the first full model I went to print had a failure to adhere in the center of the bed near the front edge. How could this be? These sorts of issues are exactly the reason I bought the CR-Touch to eliminate! After all of this I'm just about ready to pull it and go back to manual bed leveling.

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  9 месяцев назад

Hi. What firmware are you using? The offset should be -44 and probably -7 or -9 for x and y but having a positive z offset is a huge red flag. That means that the probe is higher than the nozzle when engaged which cant work. I would try to rebuild the firmware and make sure to clear eeprom.

Thank you for the video. I recently picked up the Ender 3 Pro and the CR Touch. The hardware install part was helpful-thank you. One thing I would suggest is just to disconnect the cable from the z-stop switch, and not from the board. There is so much hotglue that I spent a good 15 minutes trying to remove it from the board, and I probably ended up damaging something in the process. It does not look as nice from cable management perspective, but after looking at the instructions, this was not a step mentioned.

If you stare at the middle of the arm you can see how the arm starts to move up and down with the motor being on the left side the right side does not move as quickly or as much. this can't be good for prints because it is pretty noticeable. Hi, when I try to install the firmware for the cr touch, nothing happens. It restarted once, but when I went into the "about printer" setting, I did not have bilinear leveling. A few of my settings are in different places than yours. What could be the issue?

@@3DPrintscape No I do not. I actually accidentally flashed the firmware and now just have a blue screen error. I tried to get new firmware from: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1W3Ed91h_GtFX0gpw1lHDAy3wYvpkzEmG and still no luck. I needed the "Ender-3 Pro_4.2.2_Firmware_Marlin2.0.1 - V1.0.1.bin". When I put the sd card in the printer screen wouldn't change from blue, it shows no signs of new firmware. The sd card is formatted to FAT32 and I've even tried changing the file name, starting with "firmware".

Hi, I like your explanations but I am confused about where I am with regards to firmware. I have an Ender 5 Pro with a 4.2.2 board and a CR Touch installed. My current Marlin is 1.1.1. I see a bin for the mainboard and another for the CR Touch titled Ender-5 ProMarlin2.0.6HW4.2.2ALTE137.
Do I run the mainboard firmware first and then the CR Touch firmware, or does the CR Touch firmware include the mainboard firmware?
    TIA

I have a 4.2.2 mainboard on my Ender 3 pro, so I used that firmware. I see that it installed from the SD card in the About Printer section. But now the Z axis won't move. And sometimes when I click auto home I get a major error message "homing failed - restart"
I tried unplug / replug the cables, but that doesn't seem to solve it. Sometimes when I click auto-home, the x and y axis movement happens, but there is no z-axis movement. Also the CR Touch seems to be glowing a proper blue LED light inside. The probe is like 2 inches above the bed surface.
I'm thinking maybe the cable connection is not great.

Hi. If the z stop is disconnected, try connecting it. There was a couple builds creality had that needed it disconnected for some reason but recent ones and marlin builds expect it to be connected.

      seems ok - stored settings
Auto Homed - this brought the nozzle down to just above the bed - it then retracted about 12 mm up and stopped

      Move Z - was at 10.0
reduced to 0.0 but extruder still 1mm or so above plate
Set Z-offset to -3.5 (thought that would bring it down to touch the plate at least)

Leveled bed - probe was lighting up about with extruder 1mm or so above bed
      Stored settings
      Tried to print the dog
      Bed & Nozzle heated
Extruder moved to center about 12mm off plate
      E Heating ( but was at 200/200)
      Nothing else happened….
      Stopped
Tried to print a bed level that had Auto level code
      Heated up
Probed 9 points - was stopping about 2 mm off plate
Started print but extruder was touching plate
Tune - went to 5.00 entered

Hi. It sounds like the z offset isnt set right or something may have movement (like the carriage) that shouldnt. I would clear setting and start back from the beginning. Also, its worth mentioning that the autohome should leave the nozzle at +10 from the bed in the center.

    • @randallpatrickc

@@3DPrintscape When I set the Z offset, should the nozzle move? Or is it just when starting a print?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  Год назад

@@randallpatrickc When you are setting the offset, the nozzle will move down that way you can get the right gap between the build plate and the nozzle. When you do an autohome afterwards it will ignore the offset and go to +10. The only time the offset comes into play is when you start a print.

Firstly. I did not like the feel of the CR Touch cable plugging into the mother board. My mind was saying, somethings wrong. There was no click feel when it seated. I had to put a bright light on it to be sure it was seated. I deal with equipment every day that uses electrical connectors like that.
Secondly. I noticed you did not cover the topic of firmware. I'm going to look into if mine needs an upgrade with this add on. I did notice it has Marlin V 1.01 in it. Did I hear/read right? You made a video of the install with the Marlin OS? I'm looking for it. I don't want to crash my nozzle into the bed damaging both. Lastly. Why can't the Z stop switch stay connected and be employed as a last ditch safety switch should the CR Touch fail?

I've just completed putting together my 3v2 with BTT filament sensor and CR touch probe. I have installed the Creality firmware for BL touch and filament sensor and, separately, also tried the Jyers firmware. Both firmwares were for the 4.2.2 board that is in my machine.
My problem with both of these firmwares is that my autohome position is X=154.0 and Y=117.0. What might I have done wrong? I cannot find a way to convince the printer that home should be at the front left !! It's driving me nuts, any help / suggestions very gratefully received.

Hi. Are you sure your v2 has the 4.2.2 board? I thought they all came with the 4.2.7 one. If you are using the wrong firmware, that could explain the issues you are seeing.
