The hard fact is, elogs have not done one DAMN thing to prevent accidents. In fact accidents have went UP since elogs were mandated even though they were supposed to lower the number of accidents. So the FMCSA's position is "Elogs aren't working, we need more elogs." That is EXACTLY what you would expect from government sticking it's nose and it's ass into something it knows absolutely nothing about. The only way to stop this harassment is a nationwide shut down but there are too many cheese eaters out there for it to work. Years ago I had a leaflet on my windshield that was asking us to boycott certain states. Make your deliveries and pick-ups but do not buy anything in that state. No fuel, food, no tires or parts unless it was necessary like if you had a blowout. If you did have to buy fuel get just enough to get out of the state. And that was a genius idea but the one thing it takes for it to work is participation. At the time it was boycotting Cali and Illinois. I went along with it but there's just not enough people doing it to do any good. Imagine truck stops losing 80% of their fuel sales. I understand you pay to drive through the state if you don't buy fuel but I'm talking about the profit the merchants of the state make and the sales tax from everything you buy. It would work if enough people started doing it. The proof was in Jackson, Mississippi. The Petro there put up toll booths when they got the bright side of charging us to park there. There were some PISSED off drivers. I was one of them. About a month later I came back, went through the booth got my ticket made a U turn and scanned it right back out. I wanted them to see the times and that I bought nothing. It went on for a couple of months and I went back and they said the toll booths didn't work. Lol. Right. I got fuel again and left. A couple of weeks later I went back and the toll booths were gone. I asked what they took them out and they said they couldn't get them to work right. 🐴💩. They took the mf'er's out because they pissed off a buncha drivers and they stopped coming in there and their sales hit the hard rock bottom. There's your proof that it works. Also the Ohio turnpike. The speed limit was 55 for trucks and a very high toll to go across. So, many drivers started taking the 2 lane roads. The speed limit was the same and it was free. Their toll money dropped off the charts and what did they do? They raised the speed limit to 65 and lowered the toll. PROOF that participation in a boycott works. And these weren't planned boycott's. It was just a bunch of pissed off drivers that didn't know each other that had the same idea.

You say accidents have gone up (true)...but I think you fail to realize that the amount of drivers on the road has gone up more...the miles traveled accident rate has significantly been reduced over the years...proving that ELDs actually work (along with lane departure systems, collision mitigation systems, and adaptive cruise).

I feel the ELDs are the reason for parking availability where drivers are forced to park wherever they can find a spot and is why the truckstops fill up so early and why drivers take their 30 minute break on fuel islands. Pre ELD trucks where on the road 24-7. After ELD trucks on road mostly during the day and at night the teams and the few truck that don’t run ELD. I also feel that the 14 hour rule causes drivers to drive more aggressively because they are more concerned about not being in violation of the HOS and less on safety. Pre ELD drivers gave each other more respect and courtesy. Example on CB radio ( hey driver come on out and get around that slower truck). Just my thought and opinions. Stay safe out there drivers.

    Comment:
Changing the rules over and over again puts a burden on small trucking companies like us. The FMCSA came out with the ELD. We invested a lot of time and money to adapt to this rule and be in compliance with it while still being able to run safe and profitable. It would be nice if for once, the government could stop coming up with new regulations all the time, trying to fix a problem ( truck accidents), without going to its source. The ELD exemption is not what makes it dangerous out here. The problem is that we have more and more unqualified drivers out here, that are put under an ungodly amount of stress every day. Maybe the FMCSA should start looking at the source of the problem instead of trying to patch it up and punish those who have millions of accident free miles to show for. - stop giving in to the mega carriers demands about lower the minimum age and make it easier to obtain a CDL! - redesign the CDL test to where you can assure that only the highly trained and qualified people can pass - stop buying into the lie that there is a driver shortage. There is no driver shortage! There is a shortage of people that are willing to spend their lives out on the road for no money! And that’s why the mega carriers run out of drivers and push constantly for lowering the qualification standarts! Raise them and you would be amazed how the industry would change for the better and accidents would go down without new mandates! Today, the unqualified, not enough trained, stressed out driver in these trucks is the biggest danger. Change that!

I said the same unpopular sentiment. The ELD is not the problem. The quality of driver and the basic experience and common sense that is needed to be safe is very reasonable. The fact that government officials and the like think they can fix the issue of accidents by how they currently are approaching it is proof how out of touch they are. Invest in training and trade tech schools to provide too notch training. Virtual simulators and hours of actual behind the wheel training before someone can be left on their own to drive a truck. Look, accidents will happen. It’s the fatal accidents that EVERYONE wants to prevent. But, the Ivy League graduate who works for the government and the city and state official who probably has never driven over the road let alone a semi is dictating what you and I do for a living.

@@johnnyvivenzio9982 I worked for the top CDL school in the greater Kansas City, KS area. I was an instructor for over 3.5 years there. The school does a good job and attracts carriers who have good training programs to make new drivers successful. I too saw students at the CDL school who had no reason to be in a truck. But, they passed the CDL exam. It’s not all on the schools and that’s what I get frustrated with. It’s the schools responsibility to train the student to pass the exam requirements. It’s the trucking companies responsibility to properly train, evaluate and then release the new driver to their truck solo. It’s all about profit and how much should you invest in a new driver before you either let them loose or you keep training them until they are ready to be let go solo. Then there is the background someone comes from. Black, white, ethnicity, privileged or poor. Then theirs common sense. I could go on and on. So you see it’s a lot of factors that come into play but I do believe that a good trucking company insists to a new driver that if they are not ready then they speak up and say something. But, a lot of people are in a “rush” to get out and make money. Why? For many reasons. That’s what gets them to make mistakes. Sometimes very serious mistakes.

FMCSA needs to step back at look at all the statistics,
1 out of 35 CMV Crashes that are actually a Driver's fault is ELD Exempt.
The other 34 are ELD Complaint and still screw everything up.
ELD's have done nothing but put a strain on 75% of the Drivers since 2012.
Companies have been pushing Drivers to run has hard as the can with threats of being fired if they don't, yet FMCSA still doesn't enforce anything to help Drivers out on that end.
Companies will fire Drivers over just about anything that goes against what the company wants done and then list it on their DAC report keeping those Drivers from going to a Good Company.
The Government either needs to step up & help protect the Drivers & their equipment & Pay or back off and let us run the way we need to without ELD's.
If a Driver violates HOS Rules then Suspend his License for 6 months, If a Company fires a Driver because the Driver won't break HOS Rules then that Company needs to be fined so much that the Driver won't be scared to report them, & make half of the Fine go to the Drivers as a Reward for Reporting this Companies.
