  • The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time) book review
No, this is not a Lord of the Rings book review, you silly thing, it's The Wheel of Time.. that book came out in the 1990s, the Amazon Prime Show came out in 2021 and more people are interested in this book in the past month than two decades. Ain't that swell!
Book one, The Eye of the World sets up Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
Also, is it just a Lord of the Rings pastiche?

Book one is just introduction, to the characters, the world, the politics, to cultures.
It's only after reading the second book that the curtain fully comes up.

14 books plus a prequel. 😂 Definitely a fair review. I enjoy it, but I can absolutely understand why many people don't. To me it's a middle of the road series. Great review!

It's funny how different people feel about the length of the series. There were ten books out when I got into the series, and seeing how many books there were was actually a huge selling point for me. I love the slow, methodical pacing; I even like all the walking. I'm also a big fan of travelogue/quest narratives, which typically fall into the "go somewhere, something happens, repeat" cycle.
I will die on the hill that this book is way less of a LotR copy than popular internet culture claims, especially in light of the Arthurian references that a lot of people seem to disregard. And like you said, basically every fantasy writer is drawing on Tolkien at some level; it's unavoidable.
I'll always love the series, but I can absolutely see why it doesn't work for some readers. But don't watch the show if you want to experience the real Wheel of Time story lol.

The Eye of the World and The Way of Kings. Gardens of the Moon next? It's way better to read a good fantasy series.

I’ve only read the first book, but for me the Tolkien comparisons are particularly egregious in this, because the similarities in some of the language used made me feel like I was reading LotR fanfic 😅
And in my opinion, world building is partially about the actual descriptions of place, but also in the explanations of how the world works. Can I understand how society works? What about the magic system? Does that feel internally consistent, or does it constantly contradict itself based on what the story needs?

When you consider that it takes 15 books to tell the story, the first two books is really just about meeting the majority of the people and getting a feel for the world. If you really just had tons of time to at least dedicate to reading (or listening to audio books...) and can make it past book three, then you can start seeing more adventure... so yes I am saying read 4 books just to understand the world, places and relations with each other, the lore, how the magic works... It is honestly a great book for teens as the main characters are, while I love the series and have reread the books myself it is because you realize when you are in the later books just how important some of the minor characters who you just met in passing are latter on.

Today you’re reviewing fantasy. Tomorrow your self-publishing your very own fantasy series. It’s a slippery slope, my friend ☕️

This series has about as much to do with Lord of the Rings as Fellowship of the Ring had to do with the Once and Future King. There is some overlap in style but only about the first 100 pages or so even look close to the LotR books. The next 10,000 pages of the series have next to nothing in common with LotR. I find it very confusing when people compare a small but popular trilogy to a 15 book series. Might as well compare Harry Potter books to the Jack Reacher books and say they are similar because they both speak English. That's about how much sense that makes.

Coming from a lifelong fantasy fan, this book is a fucking slog. Jordan definitely has a certain...pace that he tends to stick with. The entire series seems to be plotted and paced the way in which most writers would plot and pace a single book, but zoomed into every conceivable microcosm, which resulted in the 14-book, 4-million-plus word final product. It makes the minute-to-minute experience of reading his stuff really, really, really goddamn slow. It makes for huge payoffs when they come about, but holy god is it unclear whether making it there is worth the time and effort.

Also, I'd like to suggest you to read Malazan Book of The Fallen. Some clame It to be a post modern critic to fantasy, because of It's complexity and for not following any obvious fantasy formula. Personaly, I think It's a nearly perfect series, although the first book doesn't appeal to most people

I'm really curious if you planned to read the entire series if you had liked it!
To answer the question in your thumbnail, WOT - no, EOTW - sort of, otherwise Jordan wouldn't have got a publishing deal to explore the ideas he actually wanted to. I bailed after Book 2 - couldn't stand any of the main characters and Jordan's writing style was painfully drawn out.
Oh the 'worldbuilding' is such a pet peeve of mine.
2/10 - same as Senlin! Formal protest.

I picked this book up way back when I was in middle school and it was like 800 pages long and the print was microscopic. I looked it up and saw that there were (at that time) like 12 books and the series was still going and I was like, "Nah. I think I'm good." XD For me, life's too short to spend that much time reading the same damn thing. XD

Bloody good review man ! As someone who is making his way through the series I totally get your gripes. As for the world building, you tend to recognise that right away, it’s usually cultures or people not making any sense or having a magic system that really has no effect on the world (like GOT has great world building as you can see how although dragons are gone, they had greatly impacted the world before they left) Bad world building I’d use Divergent as an example, as that series goes on the world it takes place in makes no sense what so ever
