    Rosamund & Daniel practically carried the show by themselves.

    • @MrMezmerized
      @MrMezmerized 2 года назад +14

      They did and that exposes a big flaw in the show imo. The writer invented this whole "Who is the Dragon Reborn?" mystery, and then put the main focus on Moiraine and Lan instead. Particularly the boys and especially Rand are underdeveloped imo.

    • @cyc20976
      @cyc20976 2 года назад +33

      @@MrMezmerized I thought the mystery was quite cleverly done, it gave new viewers a storyline that was understandable, and for book readers a new take on the story with kept to be interesting. I do not agree that Rosamund and Daniel were the only ones carrying the movie, all of them and the extras did a very good job, even the trollocs stuntmen.

    • @MrMezmerized
      @MrMezmerized 2 года назад +6

      @@cyc20976 The easiest to understand is Rand being the DR as early as the book reveals.
      And I think the change degraded the story quite a lot. Rand is badly underdeveloped, For instance all we got from his internal struggles were a few flashbacks, and almost no channeling. Perrin is mopey, useless, and beyond hints nothing about his wolfbrotherness. And there wasn't a lot left of Matt after Shadar Logoth. All great book stuff.
      Another good book element is the fact the Dragon Reborn WILL go mad and wreak havoc. In the show there's a 2/5 chance none of that happens. And it seems the vast majority of non-readers thought it was either Egwene or Nynaeve. So hey, no biggy.
      Limiting it to the boys would have at least given more freedom for storytelling.
      And like I said, the writer could have done more with the Five and the mystery, if they had had at least the same amount of attention as Moiraine and Lan. With 10 -12 episodes I would have probably been fine with the Stepin thing.

    I love love love this show and I hope that Amazon's corporate mindset doesn't believe in all these fanboy snowflakes going on and on about the skin colour of the actors or why so many scenes were cut. The series by itself is amazingly shot, acted, written. Make up and costumes are gorgeous, and Rosamund pike just carries her scenes like atlas carries the world. All the other actors are also really really good. True, the show can be cheesy at times but I really love that about it. It doesn't try to be GoT but finds its own tone.

      Exactly! I loved the show so much that I had to read the books.
      I've just finished The eye of the world and, while I'm not a big fan of some of the cut characters and plotlines, I totally understand why they did so.
      And if those people thought the show was "cheesy" is because they've not read the book, it's even cheesier and cornier.
      And that's not a bad thing, it's a very good fantasy world with very a well-thought-out magic system and rules and Jordan is basically the master of foreshadowing.
      Can't wait for the season finale next friday, hopefully they'll fix that controversial ending of the first book.

    It is a good show as an original show. I had to stop associating it with the books I read and love. It is too divergent from the source material to be considered an adaptation. Plot points, characters, important elements from the books, etc. have been fundamentally altered to the point of making it its own thing. It does not make it a bad show, but it is not the WoT.

      My main issue with this show by itself, is that the writer forced this "Who is the DR?" mystery in there (which I have issues with), and then put the main focus on Moiraine and Lan instead. Particularly the boys are underdeveloped. And this is creates more problems down the road. End of season 2 they are supposed to be good or even experts with their preferred weapons. Rand can barely hold a sword, Matt has shown no staff proficiency. And the writer already made sure none of them get decent practice. Perrin is a pacifist, Rand and Matt are off alone.

      Still reading the books, but I've heard that's actually pretty darn in line with the WOT lore. When the world was broken, the world was sent back literally thousands of years (that includes technology).
      Also...not to be that guy...but...Wheel of Time is NOT MEDIEVAL FANTASY. If anything, it's the renaissance. Swords do not equal medieval. So having a Forsaken in a tux really isn't anachronistic (I mean, if fantasy can even be anachronistic (if you want historical accuracy, probably read historical fiction (or historical fantasy!) instead)).

      It's a 600+ pages book crammed into 8 episodes. What did you expect? A line per line adaptation would've taken at least 2 seasons to even reach the Eye of the world and probably another 3 episodes to deal with the ending.
      I agree that we don't get to see and care as much for the two rivers gang and their relationships. Thankfully the actors have some amazing chemistry between them and their friendship is very believable even if we don't get to see as much of it during the first episode. I also agree that the Dragon reborn is never established as a threat during the series, but this was meant as a way to keep the mystery alive for newcomers, that's why some thought that Nynaeve, Perrin or Egwene could be the dragon.
      But being fair, the show has some amazing companion animated shorts that expand on the book lore, there's one that explains the Breaking of the World and another one about the Steddings and Ogier culture.

      @@alastorcorvus I agree with some of your points but adding the shorts is not something I can accept. If it's not in the series then it shows a lacking in the writing or producing to get that information across
      Plus they had 8 episodes which is very short but they wasted so much time on filler that was unneeded and sometimes new characters not in the books or event that didn't even happen in book 1.
      I never asked for a word for word adaptation but an accurate one would be nice. Moraine isn't the intelligent wordsmith we know, Mat was never a thief or heavy gambler like this, Mats parents were great people, Tam was a bladesmith not some guy who can't kill 1 trolloc alone. The chemistry from Nynaeve and Lan was never there and logically you can't see why Lan would be attracted to her. Perrin is some vegetarian wolf lol Egwene being the worst gf/whatever I've seen. Rand and all the boys being the most cowardly I've ever seen.
      The friendship is only really shown in episode 1 but after that nothing much. And the story IS about the two rivers bunch, so having us not care about them as much is nonsense. Even the threat of the Dark Lord is not really felt, the trollocs and fade stop being a menace from episode 4 and in episode 7 we only see 1 trolloc, so laughable since they always in groups. They even messed up the ways and how anyone can use it not just needing the 1 power.
      What they did is want to do a few big reveals and action scenes and stunts and forced the plot instead of a logical path that builds to the reveal. They had their destination and forced an unbelievely dumb path towards it regardless how much they mess up things

      @@nmbalo how can it be a "lack of writing" when those shorts were produced and written by the exact same people who wrote the series? That's just nitpicking to pointlessly antagonize the team behind the series, just watch them and decide for yourself.
      Like I said, I agree that the whole season has pacing and budget problems and I agree about the filler-like feeling, specially of episodes 5 and 6, but those episodes gave us a much deeper understanding of Lan and Moiraine's relationship, the overall politics of the Aes Sedai and the bonds between them and their warders. We got to see Logain early which does help build that threat of the Dragon, we see Logain is powerful to take on like 5 Aes Sedai and their warders without even flinching... and he is a FALSE Dragon. So they go out of the way to state that the real deal is going to be even more powerful than Logain, and it's safe to assume that the Dark one is pretty OP too.
      I do have to agree that they pushed themselves into a corner with the Ways, the Ogier and all that stuff, but it's understandable since they needed a way to keep Mat out (since the actor quit by ep 6) and to keep Moiraine occupied and concentrated enough to not notice Rand channeling and give Nynaeve the spotlight.
      Speaking of Mat and Moiraine... idk, Rosamund Pyke is perfect as Moiraine and while she doesn't has the same sort of cunning presence, she feels more of a leader and a powerful wisewoman instead (they kinda buffed her powers in the Trolloc attack and subsequent escape but then got rid of her more ludicrous spells... like when she became giant). I also like that her chemistry with Lan is amazing and, while Lan is more relaxed and warm than in the books, captures their relationship from the books perfectly.
      Idk man, I liked this version of Mat... yeah. Maybe it sucks that they protrayed him as a thief and gambler but they also showed a more nuanced side. He does it for her sisters, he cares about his friends and this version values his friendship with the rest of the 2rivers gang because they're better than his own parents and had helped his sisters in the past too. It makes Mat much more relatable instead of a prankster and comic relief like on the books.

    • @nmbalo
      @nmbalo 2 года назад +1

      @@alastorcorvus @J. Alfredo Martínez-Tapia you say all that about Mat but in the show they say he has evil inside him, the same evil that drew the dagger too him. So all this nuance is lost and my point valid, they messed his character up. Mat has no need to steal and gamble in the books since his parents are decent people.
      The series having shorts, for me personally, is a failing in their budgetary control and I won't accept any information they have there. They wasted valuable time and money on politics and warder business which isn't needed.
      The politics doesn't add anything to the overall story and is a waste as is the warder part because in the books you get to see the effects a death of a warder or aes sedai has on their partner.
      I do have some bais against the actress playing Moraine but I still think she has the acting proficiency to do better.
      Now about Logain, fighting 3 aes sedai and only killing 1, dude that's not powerful or scary at all, even for a false dragon. Because they didn't show the true dragons power as in the book prologue, we have no idea what scale of destruction he capable of. To make logain weaker than Nynaeve is so bad as well when we know he much stronger in the books.
      Plus how come aes sedai can't tell when there is a woman who can channel? They cut so many small bits that they lost so much nuance. Oh and if being the Dragon is so scary, why do these kids not react when told one of them could be the Dragon? It's the lamest reaction I have seen.
      They don't even explain what a Taverin is or what evidence Moraine had in book 1, before even meeting the kids mind you, that they are Taverin.
      I say forget the shorts because the televised version is what they pushed out, all those who don't know about the shorts are left with so many questions. Like buying a game but having to buy the dlc later every month or so. That sadly is the norm now but it still a terrible thing. They wasted time they didn't have on things the story didn't need
      Lan crying has to be the worst thing for me. The strong man who has lived with death since he could remember and had such powerful lines about it in the book, is now kn his knees for some random guy who he wouldn't know too much since Moraine is hardly ever in the tower or with other sisters.

    The show has only a few similarities to the books of the series. The dragon can only be a man in the books. That's why they mainly hunt for male users of magic. The fact that Moiraine loses her magic is not mentioned in the book, but Siuan Sanche and her assistant are appeased or lost their magic as punishment during the rebellion in the white tower. Another book series that is destroyed by the Amazon streaming service, just like Netflix did with the Witcher. Such a shame that people who don't have the creativity to write original work themselves have the opportunity and the power to destroy the beautiful work of others.

      A show doesn’t have to be exactly the same as the source material. Eg. The Boys is different from the comic books. The Harry Potter movies had some differences from the books too. It’s not abnormal for the books to differ from live action.
      If it’s exactly the same then you can guess the ending which makes it boring to watch and also it seems more inspired by the books than it is a photocopy of the books onto the screen.
      Also if you don’t like the show then you’re not the intended target market and it’s okay to not watch it. Everything won’t be made to appease your sensibilities, and if you go around in life with that mindset then you’ll always be disappointed.

    I want to be objective here. I love the actors and I'm happy there are different nationalities playing characters. I can over look this part, even though it's not entirely accurate to the story. But the rest of the story is not accurate. Sexualizing Moraine was completely unnecessary. Why does the show need to know her sexual orientation? I read the books 20 years ago and it provides no hint whatsoever and her sexuality is virtually non existent or is it a significant part of the story. Which is why it feels like this was force added to the story. As a RJ fan, it's really not worth watching since the books are so much better.
