- The Electronic parking brakes can scare some shade tree mechanics off but let me show you how to deactivate then reactivate the parking brakes so you don't cut off a finger while doing a rear brake job on a Ford F150

I did not realize this was a thing before removing the rear caliper. When I did the power to the truck shut off and the truck is totally dead. I did not compress the caliper but I cannot get power in the truck to engage the maintenance mode now. Thanks to Ford for make a simple process complicated.
Unfortunately they all are making it very difficult to service them on our own. I was a Volvo technician in the 90s and they were simple but safe and reliable cars. We had a Volvo big wig come in for s study at the dealership I was working at and he told me they were in the process of making things harder to work on for independent shops and shade tree mechanics. They didn't want anyone but dealers working on them.
Very helpful and you explained it step by step very well. Thanks
Thank You
It is nice when you have a shop like this where you can get the vehicle elevated! It is a back killer when having to do everything at ground level!!!
It really is. I am blessed to have it for sure.
Might wanna put a bungee cord or something on that caliper instead of letting the hang by the brake line
Thanks for the tip
That’s the “danger, let me show you” he was referring to in the thumbnail lol
Rebar Tie Wire aka Baling Wire gets the job done for me. Yah if you let them hang by the hoses you will never be sure you aren't causing a hose failure some time in the future.
I just finished replacing all brake pads in my 2018 Ford F-150!. Had no issues doing the change out but had to have my left rear rotor turned due to severe damage from uneven wearing of the respective pad (not sure why these pads wore so unevenly?). Only 43K miles 3 pads about 30-40% remaining with left rear 0% remaining and into the metal eating into my rotor. By the way the caliper piston can successfully be compressed with a large c-clamp! I used an old pad to protect rubber piston while using c-clamp. With vehicle in maintenance mode caliper piston compresses very easy!!!
You can also put the e-brake in service mode with a free program called "Forscan". You need to buy a OBDII/USB dongle though. Honestly, by the time you get your computer out, hook it up and boot it, it's probably faster to do it as shown in the video.
Great Video. Getting Ready To Put Brakes/Rotors On My 2015 Lariat. Was Wanting To See About That EPB, Thanks
I just did my 2022 ford escape, everything went great except when it came time to take the car out of brake maintenance mode, Nothing worked, I had to have the car towed to the ford dealer and they had to call ford computer tech guys to get it out,, Don't be like me put your car in maintenance mode and back out before doing the brakes just to make sure it works,, buyer beware
Thank you so much. I never would had known about e brake and not using a c clamp. Seems I got crappy ford pads on my new 2021 150 the squeal and they're not counting it as a warranty issue. May as well as do it myself. Gal at service desk says it's a known issue with ford.
every car or truck i've owned i had to change the front brake pads first can you tell me why the rears would go first or is that a ford thing
Some makes and models do that. Most wear the fronts first. Fords are special like that lol
I just changed my rear brakes on my 2020 Ford F150 and did not put it in maintenance mode. Is it going to damage my truck?
I don't know. I never tried it
Hanging the calliper by the hoses, that’s a no no. No lube on the pad sliders, dropping the pad on the ground but not checking to see if you cracked it and finally no torque wrench on the bolts. Is this a how not to video?
@DaveS987 thanks for watching lol
I just did the back brakes on my 2017 . Wasn’t hard at all. Got it in maintenance mode and out of maintenance mode no problem. But the funny thing is the back brakes had to be changed before the front brakes. That’s weird
Yeah, very weird, I have 4,500 miles on my 2018 F150 and the rear brakes are shot, I’ve never seen that before on any of my other vehicles.
I have the same problem, I thought the front brakes would go first, I wonder if it has something to do with the electric brake system, applying to much pressure, causing it to wear out faster
@@donroy4787 ditto. rear brakes are metal on metal lol changing them out today (2019 f150)
Just did my pads at 35,000 miles. The fronts were probably only about 50% used up, but the rears were almost down to metal and I caught them just in time. I think it has to do with the electronic stability control, traction control, and trailer sway control when towing.
Hi
Does sombody have electronic park breakein system diagram for F150 2018? I just bought f150 from 2015 with destroyed rear axle and buy new one but with electric brake system. I need help to conect this new axle with electrick park brake system to my 2015 f150 with traditional brake system.
Regards
Dariusz
Great information, thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you.
You can still use a C clamp. There's enough space to not clamp the electronic brake motor. I did it yesterday.
I used a flat head to compress the piston. They didnt give a reason why, that tells me it was the only scare tactic left make me think i cannot. I know alot of people who cant, not knocking your work at all brother.
Just did my 2019 today, went easy, easy to get it in and out of maintenance mode
Thanks for stopping by my channel. Hit the Like and Subscribe to help me grow. Thanks for watching.
lot of stress on brake lines... should have supported Caliper then did the reset on piston.
No worries 30 years and have never hurt one doing a brake job. Some heavy calipers I do support but some just don't need it.
My 2016 F150 LARIAT 2.7 ecoboost is showing Brake malfunction service now, Service advance trac and smells like wire burning coming out of the passenger side compartment. please help
Need to have a scanner that can read the abs system.
Don't know if it makes much difference but I pulled out my caliper pins out cleaned and added new grease to these to make sure calipers wear evenly!
That's a good idea. I definitely do that when needed.
Question: i replaced rear brake pads on 2019 SE Escape and used the brake toolkit that rotates the piston to allow it to open enough to install new pads. No activation or issues occured. Was i lucky? Am i ok? Now soon ill do front brakenpads. Should i , now that im aware, really enter it into the service mode before i do the front.? It seems to be a safety requirement or does it also have more than one purpose? If so what are those purposes. Thanks
Without doing some research on your car I'm not sure it has electric parking brakes
@@HotRodDave yes. There was an electric motor on the rear calipers. How is the best way to document owner repais so they show up on carfax records? Any ideas or experience in that area. My warranty just rolled over 60k.
And what might be the negative result of using a C clamp or the Screwdriver method? I have zero intention of buying tools I don't really need.
Just don't damage anything
@@HotRodDave that's the idea, I was just curious if they actually had a reason why not to do it that way.
Usually when I use a C clamp, I use the old pad to distribute the pressure across the piston.
What if you left the battery on
I only know this way. I don't know what would happen.
What year of truck, did this application start in? I have a 2016 XLT Sport 4X4, and I'm unsure if this is just on a particular model/year of F150?
I am not sure the exact years and if they all had them . I have only ran into a few with them. I bet a quick Google search will get you your answers. It is easy to identify the calipers that are electronic. They will have an electronic connection on them.
I can't get mine to get into service mode I just turned off electronic brake didn't get into service mode what do I do now?
I have not ran into that. I am sorry but I don't know how to help you. If it isn't working you should try a scan tool with the function for servicing the brakes
If I replace only the break actuator, should I put the car on maintance too? and/or Unpluging the battery is the same thing?
I am not sure what you mean
@@HotRodDave I'm replacing Ford Expedition parking brake actuator. Can I replace without remove the whole break system? and 2nd question about putting the car on maintenance, is the same thing if I disconnect the battery?
I am pretty sure if you have the electronic parking brake you need to put it in service mode before any repairs are made. It's been a few years since I have had to work on one so please check with a professional and or a Ford service manual
@@HotRodDave thanks for everything
Atlanta, Douglasville? I live between the two.
Good video thanks much.
Canton
lug nut to hold disc in place helps
Do you have to leave the car in the on position while you service the rear rotors or does the disabled electronic parking brake stay disabled if you turn the key to off?
When put in service mode it should stay until you take it out of service mode if done properly
@@HotRodDave so if you see service mode on the dash, you can turn the car off while you work on it. Then just need to reenable when you are ready and done replacing. Just wanted to make sure as I’d rather not leave the truck switched on while I work on it
@@scottweber5964 that's what I did
I have a brake malfunction now
I had to use the computer with IDS
i recently had to do one just like this, i started out with a mac scan tool to deactivate but 2 things happened the caliper did release pressure but the scan tool "enter maintenance mode" failed although the you were able to hear the caliper motor work. once i got done putting on pads on i wasnt able to exit maitenance mode after the fact by scan tool i had to do it with the pedal and epb switch
I have only done a few and all done this way with no problems. I really don't like the way fors did that but what can you do
If you unplug the battery will it take you out of maintenance mode ?
I forgot service mode now it said brake failure what do I do????
I don't know. I've never done that.
Didnt grease the slide pins?
If I didn't they didn't need any
YOU CALL YOURSELF A MECHANIC AND PUT ZERO LUBRICANT ON THE EARS OF THE PADS, ZERO ON THE SLIDERS... ZERO ANTI SIEZE BEHIND THE ROTORS...BRO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARN THE PROPER CLEANING PROCEDURE BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL NOW DO HALF FAST JOBS AS WELL WATCHING THIS. PUT MORE EFFORTS IN CLEANING THE BRACKETS AND EVERYTHING
Man you seem angry 😠. I do inspect brakes and do everything I feel necessary. I have been at this along time and worked for many Dealerships and owned my own shop for 18 years. Most manufacturers I have been around don't goop on tons of lubes and anti sieze from the Factory so if I inspect a low mileage vehicle and everything is moving free and smooth I don't over do it with lubricant. Alot of time it causes more problems than good with Brakes because dirt and brake dust get stuck all in it or it just gets blasted out by the first jet car wash they run through.
You really think he didn't do that grease
Ever the quest to complicate the operations of a vehicle. Why do that do that?
I do not know. Engineers always trying to reinvent the wheel
Agree they make things more complicated than necessary but to be honest, they do it so they can eliminate the entire parking brake pedal assembly as well as the cable from the pedal all the way back to the rear wheels (and the splitter). When designing a vehicle, it's easier to run a wire to the rear brakes than figure out how to route a cable back there. Also, parking brake cables fail (either break or seize). So, it's a tradeoff. And they can put the parking brake switch literally anywhere they want without having to worry about routing a cable from a pedal. That is why they do it.
its in the service mode now
👍
Not even kidding I disconnect the wiring and detatch the motor, manually wind the pistons in because using the scan tool or the mainenance mode results in weird things happening, Electric park brakes are a joke , theyre just another annoyance to work around IMO.
gd morning do you have to rotate the piston back in
On a normal caliper no. I have not had one of those calipers apart so I have no clue. Sorry man I just don't know.
You can yes. I know this because I was a dumbass and accidentally pushed the piston out of the caliper on accident and had to put it back together (brake fluid EVERYWHERE) and yes it spins clockwise into the caliper.
Only 14k on my 2018 needs rear brakes only 3mm front are 10mm
Do you pull a heavy trailer?
@@HotRodDave no I don’t
@@richardwhaley7497 that's not very good life
@@HotRodDave you got that right.
So my mom in law got new brake pads on her 2013 f150. That was done at a tire shop, not a mechanic. When she moves the truck, as she let's of the brake a noise comes from the rear driver side. It sounds like the brake is sticking. Makes a squealing grinding sound. Seems to go away as she gets moving. Only makes noise when driving slow or just starting. She has had it back to the tire shop cause she thought she had a stone. The kid took it for a test drive and pulled the front tires off and found nothing. The sound comes from the rear wheel anyway. She had the work done six months ago and rarely drives the truck. I advised her to let a mechanic look at it. Any thoughts before she spends more money.
No sorry. Will need to be inspected by someone who is qualified
Mine does the same thing. Not squeaking just rubbing
the piston came out on the break caliper can it be put back in
its in the service mode now but the piston is hard to push is
I don't know. I have never done that before. I would say probably but not sure. I guess I would try if I had one come out. You should probably go slow and make sure it goes back in straight. Or buy a new caliper.
Danny! Where you able to put calipers back in?
@@dannyanderson9923 same here i got it back in by using pressing tools, but now i got a park brake limited function on my fucking screeen, im so mad rn cause i let someone who said knew what to do do it for me and now i got problems dude
can you help me on this from danny
What help do you need?
@@HotRodDave i f up and the piston came out to far on the caliper rear driver side
@@dannyanderson9923 do you have if in the service mode? If you do you maybe able to get it back in. If you don't and it came out you may need a new caliper. I have never had a piston come out of one of those calipers so I really don't know how to point you in the right direction. Sorry.
Excellent instruction video! Made this job a breeze.
Thank you and glad you liked it.
I just went through this crap today. What a pain in the ass. Had no idea the truck even had electronic parking brakes.
Yeah they are always adding more bells and whistles
