When Rick, early in the pod, mentioned how he tried to interview the players on the team earlier in the year and none of them wanted to talk that just tells me they still have that culture of silence mentality. Even now when all the teams and players and whoever else they're coming out and saying they support Kyle and they need to do better as a hockey culture, I can't help but be skeptical and think they're only saying that because it is the "right" thing to say. 1. Great interview guys. Awesome of you to work to go further than just the leafs problems. As someone who works in mental health and sees victims of sexual assault and PTSD symptoms regularly, thank you for exposing your audience to this issue who probably are not aware of male sexual assault. Its estimated 1 in 6 males have been sexually assaulted and most never tell anyone. 2. Who are the Dbags that downvoted?
When the media was silent, you guys spoke up 👏 thank you to the sdpn team, Rick, Tsn and everyone else who kept the word out there when no one else was talking about it. It always surprised me Why EK’s gambling garnered more media attention than this. Both important issues, but this one was seemingly being ignored by the media
I'm glad someone finally put it into words about an issue I've been thinking about for a few years now. OBVIOUSLY not the focus of the interview but I feel like someone needed to say what Rick says an 44:00. Why fans often ignore problems with sports or at least start paying them less attention and lip service, that it is an entertainment activity, that is is escapism and because of that, it can be very taxing to the common viewer to deal with the issues in their lives, job, personal, whathaveyou, and then try and come home to enjoy sports, and see stuff like this everywhere. Having to turn your precious entertainment indulgence into another dose a reality. It's not Right, by any means. But it happens and I think at some point or another we're all guilty of just wanting our damn sport, whatever it is, without the drama. I'm glad someone actually put words to something I've been trying to explain since the NFL kneeling during the anthem stuff was at it's peak. I think it's a severe contributor as to why issues like this are able to be swept under the rug, because there are millions of people desperate to just get back to the game, and that's usually what the organization wants and takes advantage of.
Kyle was so emotional in the interview. It is clear the experience was traumatic, that includes being ignored and having help refused to him. Please continue to be vocal in your support, because at any time a survivor can spiral into a loss of hope and control. Kyle needs to know we support him.
Rick asking about could we see a player doing the free Tibet thing in the nhl? An example of someone trying something like that, that comes to mind was Tim Thomas. Thomas refused to go to the white house based on the internet legislation that was in the process of being passed that would allow the US government to shutdown websites that weren't hosted in the US and that the founders weren't born or currently located in the US. Thomas believed that was a blow to free speech and he didn't get behind it. So he didn't go to the white house in protest. No one got his back. The Bruins turned on him. The players turned on him. The fans turned on him. The League turned on him. For a peaceful protest. People started saying he was racist. I don't think there's anything wrong with a player being a family man first, or in this case a citizen of a country first. But that's how this league is. If you stand out too far you are going to get hammered back into line or you are going to be gone. The NHL wants all of it's players to be mindless drones. It's frustrating. And of course in this example Tim was right. That version of the legislation went away but another version came to pass and it's the stuff that has seen a bunch of websites get pulled down and a bunch of site owners get prosecuted when in the country they were operating in and hosting from they weren't doing anything illegal. It's a huge abuse of power and it does have all kinds of implications about freedoms of expression online.

Just a fantastic job by all of you guys, sticking with this story. If only the rest of this hockey world had as much ferocity and passion about truth and compassion as you guys do. I very much appreciate your coverage of this topic. Thank you . You spoke to peoples media responses. Kyle has been the only person to apologise with any sort of emotion. He is the only one who shouldnt need to. You spoke to Paul Maurice. He had no skin in that. I feel he responded with a heart. Not word salad
I want to say that was a absolutely terrific podcast. I will always give a truthful opinion on each show. The biggest difference in this show was a little less judgement. I have been through something like this and I was always more open to talking with people who were listen to me and asking me questions and not making their judgement on the person who committed the act. If you are continually talking about the wrong doers and nothing about the victims or just very little all the power is given to the perpetrator. The other reason I was able to watch was because you all were very professional. I think that is why I get upset with your swearing is because when you have a guest on your show, and especially if it is another journalist, you conduct yourself very differently. So I was happy I could watch this episode because it was a very informative podcast. So I will congratulate you gentleman for a informative podcast and I would hope I could watch you regularly again. Let’s hope!
The only motivation to block deposition is to prevent that deposition from making the official record prior to the beginning of settlement negotiations. If this individual's testimony has extremely damning information, it stands to reason that it can have a significant impact on the amount of monetary damages that a) the team is liable to pay, and b) the degree to which the plaintiffs can demand specific monetary damages. The owners are "committed to doing the right thing" so long as it doesn't cost them too much money. At this point money should not be a consideration at all in the teams thought process if they genuinely want to compensate and as best they can make Kyle Beach whole from this entire ordeal.
one of the most important, and serious journalistic endevours you guys have done. kudos to everyone involved. the story about the lawyers text to beach and kyles reply.... man.
Great job. Thanks for talking about this. I hope Kyle continues to heal and that Rick gets the recognition he deserves for making sure this never "went away".
Rick, thank you for all the time and hard work you’ve put in to bring this story to light. Kyle, and John Doe #2, I hope this coming out and the outpouring of support from the hockey community helps you heal. Always remember, you are not alone. People will listen.
Sadly the end goal for the Blackhawks organization and the league is clearly damage control, its amazing that this podcast has been giving this situation the coverage that it needs and I cant wait for the day that sdpn becomes a competitor to major sports networks such as TSN and Sportsnet.
Unfortunately Steve is employed by Sportsnet, so he would have to quit first. Bardown from TSN and Steve from Sportsnet are my favorites to watch though.
Kyle Beach is a hero. Now, he’s not alone. But as far as the respond from other players, Robin Lehner is one of the very few to explicit said that he supports and got in touch with Kyle. Taylor Hall said some interesting things like the hockey culture needs a big change because of all the secrecy. Brent Sopel, Nick Boyton and Alex Debrincat, who was not on the team back in 2010, somehow manage to say a decent statement from the situation unlike the other players of the team
Kyle deserves better. He is so courageous coming forward. The Blackhawks staff owners managers should be ashamed of how they are trying to wiggle out of it and not give Kyle all that he needs. Poor Kyle.
He's a hero and he's going to get better wait and see how big of a law suit settlement he going to get out of this he probably won't ever have to play another hockey game in his life he didn't want to
Perhaps the NHL should ask Kyle to help them set up a system that will address the needs of players who are faced with abuse, sexual or physical, or verbal. IF the BH organization had pursued Aldrich, taken him to court, supported Kyle, then any number of people would not have experienced the assaults Aldrich was enabled to commit later.
The over pouring love from the Hockey community as a whole has been incredible. I really hope this tragic story of Kyle Beach will give those silenced a voice
But we as the community cannot stop talking about this until we get the answers we but most importantly those who were affected deserve. Shame on the Blackhawks and the NHL
Just to add to Rick's Norwegian soccer story, that individual upon learning about the human rights issues challenged the Norwegian FA and actually made the members vote on whether Norway should boycott the 2022 WC
Have been a Blackhawks fan since the age of 5. I am 60 now. I was a season ticket holder from 2007 till 2016. I got out because I knew McDonough was an egomaniac and a coward. He did nothing for the Stanley Cup run but certainly took credit. I felt similar about Stan. Built nothing but took credit. The Chicago media glorified both Stan and McDonough. . I called both sports radio stations and expressed this but every radio show would say "No look at what both these great executives have done" I called ESPN Chicago in July about this situation and could not get passed the producer. They said, "we are not talking about that." What I want to express is both Chicago radio show do not cover hockey. And when they do it's a 5-minute segment and it's all giggles. Even this morning ESPN radio mentioned that Sopel and Boyton may have an axe to grind that is why they are saying all teammates knew about this. But Not Toews and Kane and a majority of players knew and used slurs towards Beach. That is why I listen to your podcast and other Canadian sites. I want to thank Rick and your podcast . I was A Blackhawks Fan. Thank You guys
Mad props to Rick, Katie and the SDP crew who decided it was better to put people over profits. Too many public figures talk about the morals of our society, and when it matters they have zero ethical standards. People who really care about others demand justice at the moment of the wrongdoing, not after it becomes favorable or profitable to do so. This is a long overdue reckoning for hockey, and hopefully it continues to reverberate throughout the enrite hockey culture. This is a massive task to try and get people to really change, but this is where it starts. Keep up the pressure and stick to your principles, because you know thats what the people on the other side of the line fear the most. Respect and solidarity!
For how the NHL handled this, it is sadly endemic to how most western organisations would also have handled it. To name just a few, think of the abuses at Activision-Blizzard, Aaron Hernandez, banks that caused the 2008 crash, or the abused Team USA gymnasts. Organisations ALWAYS try to wash their hands of any responsibility and accountability. All in the name of protecting "success" or "the brand". On top of deflecting, denying, and doing their utmost to keep things like this all "internal" with perpetrators allowed to "resign" or worse "re-assigned" elsewhere in the company. The biggest tragedy of all is, the lessons are never learned, and governments never try to make them learn.
I have questions. Here are only just a few. What is being done regarding the players who harassed Kyle Beach? What is being done about the player who chased the one victim on the ice and called me that horrible F word? Why aren't other news outlets speaking more about Duncan Keith's refusal to be interviewed and the lie that he wasn't approached? What is going on with Brad Aldrich right now during all of this? Where is Chicago's AG in all of this???
I’m really worried by what Rick is saying starting around the 43:00 mark in response to Adam’s (long) question. This story really doesn’t feel like it’s as everywhere as it should be. There’s too much quiet around this on social and mainstream media. It’s not enough engagement, the views are too low. This needs to be everywhere, all the time. Our ability to process the news has been eroded to a truly frightening level.
As far as the court case, I think the Blackhawks are trying to prove that they never recommended him for future employment because that is a big factor for the case with John Doe 2.
They amended that part if I recall this correctly. The fact that he was kept with the team for weeks after, let uim celebrate with the team and then have his own cup day is an implication that he was still considered a respected member of the team. And that's an indirect approval? Idk how a civil suit works but I know the burden of evidence is slightly less than a criminal one? Idk though if that'll stand.
@@nationalhamleague5352 Yes, I read that the day with the Cup is what they are considering the recommendation... Aldrich assaulted an undergrad student at University of Miami Ohio before going to the high school. Why didn't the high school know of what happened at Miami Ohio, OR do a little digging on why Aldrich wanted to volunteer at a high school when he should be able to work anywhere. What about Aldrichs own family? They knew what he was up to at least by the time he assaulted the undergrad student at Miami Ohio.
The blackhawks ruined his career and buried him in the minors after knowing everything that has happened to Kyle and so many of us in the hockey world and in the non hockey world. They buried him in the minors so he’ll have a smaller voice for if and when this horrible information came out. Now I think they owe him a lot for not letting him take the next step to the NHL just because of this.
Blackhawks should have their 1st round pick taken away. Imagine how much of a PR disaster Shane Wright going to the Blackhawks would be? The nhl can't have that.
The sad thing is there are probably more players in hockey who have had this happen. I hope kyles bravery inspires them to talk and bystanders within the sport to never sit idle when they know about something as serious as sexual harassment.
The many ways in which the system failed this guy is incredible. A $2 million dollar fine for the Blackhawks isn't nearly enough and I hope the fine goes to a group that helps survivors of sexual assault. The fact that the Blackhawks NOW want to remove the predator's name from the Stanley Cup is ridiculous. They allowed his name to be put in there in the first place! This whole situation is sickening.
The thing I am most impressed with is that the main reporters who wouldn’t let this go did not go after the players affected by this to drag them into the spotlight. Poor Kyle….I feel so sorry for him….he will punish himself for the rest of his life for what happened to that kid. It’s not his fault.
Hockey players can play with broken noses and punctured lungs, but few are as brave as Kyle for coming forward. Thank you Rick for keeping on this until it finally saw the light of day.
The blackhawks have committed to a settlement. But not all settlements are equal. If you hurt beach’s court case, you can negotiate a very modest settlement since Beach would have little legal recourse. But if Beach’s team has a strong legal case, he’ll have a much stronger negotiating position. So yeah, Wirtz committed to a settlement but…he doesn’t want to pay a lot.
Every front office personnel and player who knew about this has to go. What Kyle beach had to suffer from the trauma of this abuse for an additional DECADE should not pushed aside. It's the cover up that should have permanent bans being handed out. This is the NHL'S version of Jerry Sandusky and Penn St. Their silence lead to molestation, and more abuse, and 3 nhl organizations are in chaos. I know it won't happen, but professional sports needs their own version of the (NCAA) death penalty
Great episode. Heroic work - as you say the NHL just wand this gone, but I’d be amazed if this was an issue that occurred in isolation. As a Uk hockey fan it’s easy to see how the system leads to a culture of silence. The establishment holds all the cards - owning a players rights to play in North America means that players and coaches toe the line or they are ostracised. There are more players than spots. Jarrod Skalde is now coaching my local team here in Wales. I always though it was odd we got him. Now I can see why.
I recognize that these are two different sports but if Pete Rose gets a lifetime ban from MLB for betting on games how is there no lifetime bans for any of the people in charge of the BlackHawks who failed to do anything in response to what Brad Aldrich did to Kyle Beach.
To fulfill that “obligation” I suggest the beginning of each podcast, upload, or whatever term is wanted to use that time to acknowledge the sexual assault, racism, etc cases in the NHL. Make it a part of the format. Your reach has been proven by this interview, use it as leverage for what is right.
The Blackhawks being worth $1.09 billion being fined $2 million is the equivalent of someone with $60k being fined $110 for covering up a sexual assault. Fuckin imagine.
I take issue with Steve characterizing Maurice's statement as word salad. What he said was: "You know, the lowest man on the totem pole is the easiest to get rid of," Maurice said. "Had there been anything close to on gathering what was decided upon with the other men, then that decision would have been easy and simple for the league. So, I'm relieved for Kevin and for his family, because I believe him in what he says and I believe in him." "There'll be members of the media and there will be people out there and say, 'Why didn't everybody go?,'". "Because it wouldn't have been right, because they look, they investigated and they looked through and they talked to everyone they could. And at the end of it, serious people who brought down serious consequences said, 'No, it shouldn't happen here. That wouldn't be right.' And I trust them." You think that this is word salad and not valid? You can disagree with it but you shouldn't dismiss it. This from a guy who made his name with epic rants on LFR. Sometimes a situation like this deserves nuanced and thoughtful responses from all view points.
Kyle Beech is a hero. I love the support he's getting and it's 100% deserved, but let's keep this energy for all survivors guys. Seems like women get the "they just want money/attention" reaction. Let's give them all, men and women, the same support were giving Kyle.
It's sadly more so they act as a player's union when it comes to money. Otherwise they seem useless af, they fucked up this issue among many others with the CBA negotiations and such.
There's a good reason though why Cheveldayoff was not punished. It's because Gary Bettman calculated Bowman and Quenneville as the minimum he could do that would satisfy the public.

Then dig in on those names..and if those players are found to be culpable, you write them a fat ugly ticket and reduce sopel's and boyntons.
Cause this train wreck definitely violates the Labor Act on multiple levels
i love you guys for handling this so compassionately, so honestly, and with the gravity it deserves. thank you
Thank you for the great show. Love the work you do. I found you guys by pure accident almost a year ago and haven't missed an episode since. Keep up the great work Adam, Steve and Jesse. And awesome work by Rick. We need more people like you in this world.
Kyle Beach is a hero and not only deserves to have his name on the cup but also have an NHL Award named after him.
Name on the cup? He didn't earn that.
@@JPMadden I think precedents are irrelevant in this case.
Not on the cup but I hope his name is a recognized one in the hockey community
Or he deserves for justice to be properly served and have the NHL support whatever it is that is required with this breaking.
@@robangles neither did the Blackhawks 🤷♂️ ( in 2010)
Kyle was so emotional in the interview.
This was a tough listen. I'm so proud of kyle. So proud of rick. Great podcast guys this is amazing work
54:20 Exactly!!! THANK YOU RICK!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
And thank you guys from sdpn!!! Without you i would have heared at all. I am German and here NOBODY is talking about it!!! There arent even a lot here in Erfurt, who know. I am very grateful to have found this channel!!! So thank you guys as well!!!
Same here, Switzerland instead Germany. Great show to keep up with all NHL news!
@@fabianniederer6711 Ich feier die Jungs richtig hart. :)
Thanks boys!! Always covering the hard stuff aswell as the fun. Excited, anxious to hear Rick because i know it will be hard hitting but the truth. ✌
Facts. I don't buy for a second that guys like Toews and Kane didn't know.
Thank you for doing this. Seriously. This last week has drastically increased my respect for you three. Keep on, his advice, follow the stories. Keep up. Maybe a segment or something. Maybe not all fans, but a lot of us, really do care about the players. We want them to be healthy and safe. That sounds trite but I mean it.
Thanks for doing this episode. It’s an important topic for everyone to try to understand.
Gents - Rolled this and the prior 'casts this morning after being away last week. Know others have UNDOUBTEDLY said the same. REALLY. WELL. DONE. Definitely appreciate (a) this being on your radar earlier than others, (b) giving a voice to lines of thought and questioning that others haven't (and perhaps, as rightsholders, I dare say can't or won't?) and (c) your pledge that it will remain on your radar, after it fades from others' headlines. Wish you continued success in growing the offerings and audience of the channel.
Just a fantastic job by all of you guys, sticking with this story. If only the rest of this hockey world had as much ferocity and passion about truth and compassion as you guys do. The real hockey culture should be inherited from this. Sad that so many cowards see themselves as tough and accountable. THIS right here is real accountability
Deserves a journalism award wish he would be modest and say it's about survivors
Thank you for the good work and for covering this - please don’t let this story go away, because there are more we don’t know and everyone deserves to be heard and believed. Appreciate you guys.
Thank you for this, all of you are amazing ❤️
Great video guys!! I appreciate great content 👌 look forward to the next video.
one of the most important, and serious journalistic endevours you guys have done. kudos to everyone involved. the story about the lawyers text to beach and kyles reply.... man.
Great job. Thanks for talking about this. I hope Kyle continues to heal and that Rick gets the recognition he deserves for making sure this never "went away".
Luv watching these guys grow their own network, while also keeping their integrity. Thanks for talking about important issues and entertaining us.
Thanks to all involved to handle this with such care and tenacity. Phenomenal journalism! And Kyle is extremely brave. Super proud of him.
Rick, thank you for all the time and hard work you’ve put in to bring this story to light. Kyle, and John Doe #2, I hope this coming out and the outpouring of support from the hockey community helps you heal. Always remember, you are not alone. People will listen.
Heavy, heavy episode. I wasn't quite sure I could sit through this one quite yet. I'm glad you guys continue to talk about this.
@@yankees2864 Unfortunately yes and in that case I cant wait for the day that employees at Sportsnet try to make a move to work for sdpn
Sdpn are already getting there as it is
damn.. you boys actually did such a good job with this one. Good questions and opportunity to spread this important story.
Great Job Mister Westhead! Also Thanks SDPN guys on following that story closely and doing another full show on that horrible issue.
Kyle deserves better. He is so courageous coming forward. The Blackhawks staff owners managers should be ashamed of how they are trying to wiggle out of it and not give Kyle all that he needs. Poor Kyle.
He's a hero and he's going to get better wait and see how big of a law suit settlement he going to get out of this he probably won't ever have to play another hockey game in his life he didn't want to
Been waiting on this one all day
Perhaps the NHL should ask Kyle to help them set up a system that will address the needs of players who are faced with abuse, sexual or physical, or verbal.
IF the BH organization had pursued Aldrich, taken him to court, supported Kyle, then any number of people would not have experienced the assaults Aldrich was enabled to commit later.
"It doesn't matter if you're first. It matters that you're right." Wow! Thank you for that, sir!
How I wish that was the standard for ALL journalists.
Great job helping spread this message guys. This is terrible and it needs to be talked about NOT hidden. Great work boys.
If the NHL wanted people to think they're taking this seriously, Aldrich's name should have been removed from the Cup first thing Tuesday.
This is the best podcast in sports. Keep it up!
Guys, you have gained such legitimacy over the past 18 months, we DO come here for this
Rick and the entire sdp. You guys are awesome thankyou. We stand with kyle 🙏
Thank You guys
thank you so much for this
Mad props to Rick, Katie and the SDP crew who decided it was better to put people over profits.
Kyle Beach is a god damn hero. So much courage in the face of so much pain and darkness that he didn't deserve to feel.
48:00 I could imagine a player like PK Subban stepping up and doing something like this
Blackhawks should have their 1st round pick taken away.
You are so right. Its happens alot.
Everyone involved in this is a stain on the true fans of Chicago hockey. I am so disgusted by a team I once loved.
Have you chosen a new team?
The many ways in which the system failed this guy is incredible. A $2 million dollar fine for the Blackhawks isn't nearly enough and I hope the fine goes to a group that helps survivors of sexual assault. The fact that the Blackhawks NOW want to remove the predator's name from the Stanley Cup is ridiculous. They allowed his name to be put in there in the first place! This whole situation is sickening.
Rick is a gem, Kyle is a hero, and I am thankful you guys have been talking about this. Thank you 🙏
The thing I am most impressed with is that the main reporters who wouldn’t let this go did not go after the players affected by this to drag them into the spotlight. Poor Kyle….I feel so sorry for him….he will punish himself for the rest of his life for what happened to that kid. It’s not his fault.
2 of my new heroes: Kyle and Rick and his wishing for better health for his son 🙏
Hockey players can play with broken noses and punctured lungs, but few are as brave as Kyle for coming forward. Thank you Rick for keeping on this until it finally saw the light of day.
Thank you Rick Westhead
The blackhawks have committed to a settlement. But not all settlements are equal. If you hurt beach’s court case, you can negotiate a very modest settlement since Beach would have little legal recourse. But if Beach’s team has a strong legal case, he’ll have a much stronger negotiating position. So yeah, Wirtz committed to a settlement but…he doesn’t want to pay a lot.
Really sad. Wish him the best with recovery.
I agree with another commenter, the NHL should consider an award for personal courage named for Kyle Beach.
Literally every member of the NHL player or otherwise that didn't support him before we knew who it was or after has failed Kyle/ Jon Doe two.
The real hero in this story is Rick Westhead.
You're not wrong
Does James Gary get to keep his medical license? I am a health care professional and I know my association would void my license.
The Blackhawks being worth $1.09 billion being fined $2 million is the equivalent of someone with $60k being fined $110 for covering up a sexual assault. Fuckin imagine.
rick weasthead is a hero and desveres to be in the hockey hall of fame
I take issue with Steve characterizing Maurice's statement as word salad. What he said was:
"You know, the lowest man on the totem pole is the easiest to get rid of," Maurice said. "Had there been anything close to on gathering what was decided upon with the other men, then that decision would have been easy and simple for the league. So, I'm relieved for Kevin and for his family, because I believe him in what he says and I believe in him."
"There'll be members of the media and there will be people out there and say, 'Why didn't everybody go?,'". "Because it wouldn't have been right, because they look, they investigated and they looked through and they talked to everyone they could. And at the end of it, serious people who brought down serious consequences said, 'No, it shouldn't happen here. That wouldn't be right.' And I trust them."
You think that this is word salad and not valid? You can disagree with it but you shouldn't dismiss it. This from a guy who made his name with epic rants on LFR. Sometimes a situation like this deserves nuanced and thoughtful responses from all view points.
Kyle Beech is a hero. I love the support he's getting and it's 100% deserved, but let's keep this energy for all survivors guys. Seems like women get the "they just want money/attention" reaction. Let's give them all, men and women, the same support were giving Kyle.
Thank you. 🧡💛🧡
Panarin and Lehner are those kind of guys who can speak for themselves
The NHLPA acts as a player's Union in name only. They need a major overhaul and/or new leadership imo.
It's sadly more so they act as a player's union when it comes to money. Otherwise they seem useless af, they fucked up this issue among many others with the CBA negotiations and such.
KYLE BEACH!!!
There's a good reason though why Cheveldayoff was not punished. It's because Gary Bettman calculated Bowman and Quenneville as the minimum he could do that would satisfy the public.
