There is something that is lost in this. Carolina did not get respect. The play of everyone in front of the zamboni driver won this game. No Leaf could move, pass or shoot the puck. It was perfect reaction from a team that had to face this situation. It was the Leafs from the last game. I would love to have heard the Carolina coach in the second intermission. Carolina stood up.
It was equal parts great defensive play from the Canes, and equal parts the Leafs tripping over their own two feet the entire freakin' game (in Marner's case, literally).
Update: If they play like they did in front of Ayres, like they did against the Rangers, the Canes are going to be a real serious threat to win the Cup. And if they do... *Give Ayres a ring.*
The Leafs have no respect for their goalies. It's not surprising that they leave them out to dry. Even the fans always blame the goalies when they lose. It's awful to see.
Watching this after they blew it against the Canadiens in the playoffs and the dialogue is IDENTICAL. The narrative hadn't changed a bit about this core.
Many non-Leafs fans warned Leafs fans about the core being too soft in the playoffs. It became very blatant against the Canadiens. And then the Leafs fans make excuses AGAIN and still trash the Habs about their run. I'm still angry at Greg Wyshynski for writing that BS article about how the Canadiens were gifted a sweep when Evans got injured. Absolutely disgusting behavior.
Watching this episode nearly 2 years later and hearing them talk about how they shouldn't make the playoffs and then knowing they get embarrassed by PLD just makes me feel worse for these guys but makes me laugh even harder at the Leafs
27:00 Disregarding the playoff format... Toronto placed 3rd in the Atlantic, 6th in the Metro was Columbus - tied with 81 points, but the Leafs ended up with more wins.... but we all know how that head-to-head worked out. Good call.
Watching this 3 years later for the LOLs. Some interesting things here though. Steve inadvertently predicted Zach Aston-Reese to Leafs three years early. Also, when talking about Jett Woo, the question was asked "Who names their kid Jett"? We have had two goalies play in NHL this year named Jet.
Food for thought. The Leafs have a grand total of three players on their roster 30 years of age or older: Spezza, Muzzin, and Andersen. Between the three of them, they have an average of 62 games of Playoff experience, that's a minimum of two good Cup runs worth of games. That's great. But excepting those three guys and like, Tavares and Barrie, you're talking a group of 22 to 25 year olds still. Hyman is 27 and feels like an elder statesman on this team. They're inconsistent because they're immature, and Patrick Marleau was such an influence on this team, way more than he's given credit for. This team needs grown men as much as anything else.
11:24 When thinking of embarrassing regular season losses, the only other one in the same league as the David Ayres game that comes to mind is Detroit beating Montreal 11-1 in Patrick Roy's last game for the Habs
Somethings wrong with it though. I looked up the Pickering Panthers all time roster and anyone named Dave or David, none of them were born in the early 80s.
(0:29) I'll be editing this comment, as the pod goes along. But I'm not even thirty seconds in, and the look on Steve's face has me 💀 (43:10) Adam is bang-on, here. That was a major red-flag moment for me, as a fan of Matthews, Dubas, and the team. And then Steve sums it up by pointing out they wouldn't have done this to Lou (48:14) I disagree with Adam's take, here. Two areas where Dubas definitely fumbled, were: 1) not addressing the need for a stay-at-home defenceman, who ideally had a right-hand shot. Barrie was not it (even though I assumed like every other Leafs fan, that he'd improve what we had) 2) Taking way too long to address the back-up situation (both with Sparks, and Hutchinson). Dishonourable mentions could also include the high-level contracts; also, and I might be one of the few who lament the loss of this player, but what Hainsey brought to the back end, and the room, was not filled. I will never understand acquiring Ceci, while letting Hainsey go. Hainsey as a bottom pair D, would've been great. (49:34) Also--I don't think enough has been made about the roster turnover, in the summer. I think that directly relates to Steve's point. That's on the mgmt. Talent and skill matter the most, but 'character' is something that all winning teams have. It hasn't been there, this year, for this team. (57:45) As a big fan of Kasperi, what are you hearing, Steve? You can't just drop a nugget like that, and not elaborate. I would be sad if they traded him (but recognize his potential value as an asset) Are there in-room issues? Thanks for doing this, fellers...been waiting all day, for it
Completely agree about the 43:10 point. I think Dubas and the organization will never forget what Matthews did after how they gave him exactly what he wanted. I think that makes him the most expendable, plus you get the most back for him and clear the most cap space.
APisceanSlant Also from an outsider perspective (Hawks fan) the guy you wanna get rid of is Mitch. I think that his management team is toxic and I think that spreads through the locker room. Some examples are dissing the Matthews contract as soon as it was signed on the radio, the whole negotiation throughout the summer, and just his attitude. To win in this league you need 2 stars and a great supporting cast. Hawks have Kane and Toews, Pens have Crosby and Geno, Caps have Ovi and Backstrome, and the Kings have Doughty and Kopitar. I think Willy can fall into that Top6 supporting role nicely, be like a Hossa or Sharp. If you trade Mitch you can add 2 5 million dollar players. Sorry if this is a bit hard to follow it’s very late and I’m tired but I’m just trying to give my opinion.
I like what Adam said. So many of us as children who grew up watching the Leafs would have *died* to play for this team to win the championship. So many of us, who just do not have the talent of these players, dreamed of it. I know for a fact Steve, just like myself, would DREAM of lifting that Stanley Cup at centre ice in Maple Leaf Gardens and listen to that crowd, how proud they would be that we finally brought it back. The players during the pandemic break really need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask "am I just in this for the money? Or do I want to actually win?"
I saw that tweet about Nylander being the only one (besides Mikheyev) practicing today and instantly thought about how Jesse was going to spin it into a crown, lol
also christ I feel sorta bad for Dubas because he made a roster that looks great on paper and is just absolute shit in practice. and so many of the leafs don't care!!!! marner talks about how dogshit he was and then doesn't put in the extra practice
I think this has been the most brutal season of the decade for Toronto, no other season could top this one in this regard. That loss against Carolina was the cherry on top.
Marner priced himself out of The Leafs long term picture with a contract negotiation that wreaked of entitlement, fully on board with trading his ass out of here.
If I may offer my own thoughts on the cancellation of the practice Sunday. Everything that happened from Saturday to today, I’m reminded of a similar situation with Edmonton. It was either the 08/09 season or the 09/10 season, but there was a game IN Edmonton where the Oilers played the Buffalo Sabres. They (Edmonton) got SMOKED 10-2. Everyone in that organization was let off the hook for that performance, thus resulting in 0 accountability. What happened? Loser mentality gets let in, nobody is held accountable and the Oilers stink for another 5-6 years. Fast forward to the 16-17 season. 3rd game of the season, IN Edmonton, and Edmonton loses 6-2 to the Sabres. On top of that, the day AFTER the game was one of Edmonton’s CBA mandated days off. Further on top of the that, the day AFTER the day off, the Oilers have a date with the Hurricanes. After the loss to Buffalo, Todd McLellan RIPPED the team in the media availability. Just ripped the team and the players. Call out the performance and stressed the need for them to re-establish a work ethic. So what happened after that? The Oilers practiced ON THEIR MANDATED DAY OFF (something they were later investigated for) and as a result, they won 5 of their final 6 games in October. The fact that Keefe cancelled the practice and Dubas was fine with it, should send up red flags throughout Leafs Nation. And if I was the GM, I could care less if the trade deadline is the next day. Bag skate these entitled kids who think that giving sad sack excuses like “I lacked the will-power” is somehow holding yourself accountable.
The difference between the raptors and leafs is where the players come from. Siakam, Lowry and van vleet were all later round guys or undrafted. They had to work so hard to become the stars they are and it shows with their work ethic. But with the leafs Tavares Matthews and Marner were told from the age of 10 that they can do no wrong and destine for greatness. They never had to work as hard as the raptors stars to get where they are.
Coming from a Stars fan who has to put up with them losing to St. Louis and Detroit in the playoffs annually and them not being able to score (but still supporting them) this game just about made my day and season. Go Stars!!!
Best Leafs game I have seen since I moved to Toronto from Montreal. It proves that on any given night, any player can have the game of his life - that’s the beauty of sports. Congratulations to Dave Ayres for playing his heart out for the pure love of the game. Leafs should never have traded Frank Mahovlich.
He stopped 8 out of 10 shots on goal - not bad for an emergency substitute goalie with no NHL experience. Can you imagine how much concentration that takes in a real game situation?
"It's the guys who score that matter." Oh man, you're totally right. Hey y'know who sucks and always has because he doesn't score a lot of goals? Joe Thornton. 🙄🤣
I give this coach and management until the end of next season. If they have not addressed perceived issues (the blueline) and changed the mentality of this group, I will 100% believe it cannot be done with this group. This season, I don't care how it goes. Scrape in, miss out, does not matter. This season is lost. Start today with moves to get better and actually start getting better so next season is actually that next step and not whatever this season has been.
I'm old enough to remember that on Jan. 18, 1964 , The woeful last place Boston Bruins beat the Leafs 11-0 in Toronto. The Leafs were of course a formidable team in the 60s. That was for me the worst debacle in Maple Leafs history. Just sayin. I love the brutal honesty of this particular podcast. I will add that Marner has been "sloppy" all season. Still if Andersen stops those 2 soft Carolina goals in the 3rd period, I really believe the outcome of the game would have been different. Andersen is not a very good goalie despite flashes of elite play. I've been saying this for the past 2 seasons.
No you havent. Because he's been elite by virtually every goaltending category for the past 3 years, you havent been saying that. He's been awful this year, but was the opposite for the past3 years
Just for Steve: Andersen, Barrie, & Clifford to Carolina in exchange for: Reimer, Bean, TOR 2020 1st, & conditional pick if CAR makes the playoffs / wins rounds. Leafs' get their pick back, Steve gets his boy back and maybe we keep Steve from having a massive coronary. Win-win-win.
"Find me a more embarrassing loss in NHL history." I propose the Minnesota North Stars losing 8-0 at home in the deciding game of the 1990-1991 Stanley Cup Finals to Mario Lemieux's Pittsburgh Penguins.
No, the North Stars were in the Finals against a damn good team. How do you lose TO A ZAMBONI DRIVER?? This year's Blackhawks are terrible but they haven't lost to David Ayers
I'll say it again this episode should have been called "A Comedy of Ayres".

Well done.

Ironically its not Leafs success that brings us all to watch, it's the colossal failure of this team's season that has created the buzz.
well now we have a new most anticipated podcast
There is something that is lost in this. Carolina did not get respect. The play of everyone in front of the zamboni driver won this game. No Leaf could move, pass or shoot the puck. It was perfect reaction from a team that had to face this situation. It was the Leafs from the last game. I would love to have heard the Carolina coach in the second intermission. Carolina stood up.
Very very true. They played incredibly well in front of him, and that deserves a spotlight too.
It was equal parts great defensive play from the Canes, and equal parts the Leafs tripping over their own two feet the entire freakin' game (in Marner's case, literally).

after watching the way the canes played defense for Ayres makes me really mad at the leafs for the way they left Kaskisuo out to dry in his debut
The Leafs have no respect for their goalies. It's not surprising that they leave them out to dry. Even the fans always blame the goalies when they lose. It's awful to see.
Literally been refreshing for the last 20 minutes waiting to see this podcast
Please invite Urinatingtree on the podcast, i want to see how that would go

ontop of loss to Blue jackets and 3-1 montreal. So Keefe was there for all this yet leafs still think they’ll win😭😭
