Indigenous Teacher here. I can tell you that Residential schools are no longer glossed over at the high school level in the places I've taught, which were in Manitoba, but I don't know how much it's affected education elsewhere. But I also remember barely touching on the subject when I was in high school. Also the guy you were thinking about at 1:43 or so was Chretien. He was head of Indian affairs under Trudeau and drafted the White Papers, which looked at amending the Indian act/dismantling residential schools. His white paper, however, called for the end of Indian status and dismantling the reserve system, which enraged enough Indigenous Canadians that resistance organized, spurring the National Indian Brotherhood (now called the Assembly of First Nations) to publish the Red Paper, which later morphed into their document Indian Control of Indian Education (ICIE for short). ICIE was a big influence on the 94 calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation commission in 201, among other things.

I first heard about residential schools last year through the CBC podcast Missing and Murdered. I highly recommend listening to it. Really opened my eyes to the struggles that the Indigenous are going through as a result of going through the residential school system. Absolutely horrific
People forget that Mikheyev was being talked about for the Calder last year. I believe he is a really good player with offensive upside. But he has become what he was told to become. Last year he filled in on the first line and second line a lot and did very well. This year Keefe played him as a 3rd liner and a penalty killer. He had 23 goal season in the KHL before he signed with the leafs. I think he has a lot more upside then we think. Minnesota would appreciate him with Kaprizov
Thank you for speaking about Canada’s history in regards to residential schools, it has been a heartbreaking and eye-opening week learning just how horrendous these schools were. It sounds eerily similar to the Stolen Generations here in Australia. Something we also weren’t really taught about at school either and the true horrors are only being revealed in recent years.
Just want to say bravo! and I tip my hat to you guys talking about the residential school thing and it was so well in depth. Very good reminder that hockey’s just a game.
I am happy that you guys talked about the residential schools, i grew up on a reserve and have been to many throughout Manitoba and you can see how there all still affected by what happened, and it sucks so damn much.
The Canadian gov continues to fail that minority. I am from Sarnia and they turn a blind eye to pollution into a reservation for decades until the affects were so noticeable a state of emergency had to be declared.
A captivating reading touching on residential schools and rediscovering one’s lost culture is Keeper'n Me. I read in university and loved it. Highly recommend it.
I will preface this by saying I'm a B's fan. I've been here for months and enjoy the coverage no matter what the topics happen to be from episode to episode. The chemistry that the three of you have is what keeps me here. Love the content, and keep it up!
I also didn't know my grandfather's stories about surviving Shubenacadie residential school until about 20 years ago. Some of my cousins almost ended up in that hell, but their parents fought tooth and nail to keep them from suffering the same fate. My late sister, who was a musical playwright, took the issue by the horns and worked hard to raise awareness. She starred in Children of God, which premiered at NAC in Ottawa in 2017. It was about a Cree mother who fought to see her children, who were incarcerated, and the scars the surviving children dealt with as adults. A moving musical which hopefully will go back on the road after the Pandemic. She had worked tirelessly on her own musical with her partner Leslie Arden, called Starlight Tours, which had a successful run-through at Sheridan's program (where Come From Away was also workshopped) on the day she died.
I think it’s important to remember how Matthews and Marner scored their goals. So much about coaching is about matchups, and once our captain went down we were unable to dispatch two first lines and get them playing against lesser talent...even if just for one or two shifts. I would’ve given up on the team if they lost fully healthy. The people we brought in we’re bottom six players and we never brought them into score
@@nickrenick5887 We got a remember that they are all NHL level players. They’re technically is no easier line but better ideal match ups. Look at the player who shut down McDavid, but nobody’s talking about how deadly he is as a defensive player. We also got a remember that these elite players on the maple leafs could’ve scored many goals but it was just missing by inches and if Simmons scores that one goal the series would’ve been different
So, what I've learned in the last two playoffs is that come postseason I'd rather have Jamie Benn and a one legged Tyler Seguin than Matthews and Marner...
Man i so blown away how good you guys are together. I'm not a leafs fan, but i am a conversation fan. And you guys are so good at this. I may not agree with some of the things you guys talk about, but man, you guys really know how to engage your crowd. Keep it up boys!!........ oh, and Steve needs to look into heart/stress medication....
We learned about residential schools in high school and it’s crazy to think it’s was so recently that they were open too. One of my moms friends has a grandma that’s a residential school survivor and she says she saw terrible things happen including a live baby being thrown into an incinerator. It’s just absolutely heartbreaking
Adam, thank you for speaking on the residental schools. It needs to be brought up and talked about, as these atrocities towards the Native Americans are even committed to this day. We can't just bury this underground anymore.
I dont know what game it was, but when matthews was being ragdolled from behind and he had a huge smile on his face, I knew right then and there the leafs still dont have the killer instinct to win
Speaking as a Bruins fan, I don't even have the heart to "play the classics" anymore. This feels like the pre 2004 Red Sox that would do just enough in the season to get your hopes up just to rip your heart out and stomp on it in the playoffs.
Any London Knights fans here? I am curious about Marner’s playoff career in the O, they had long playoff runs and that league is no walk in the park come playoffs as well. How did he handle the physical stuff as a teenager is my question?
He was incredibly dominant on a line with Christian Dvorak and Matthew Tkachuk. I don’t really recall too much physical play from him then, because most teams couldn’t keep up with their talent, and our depth lines were far more physical as you might expect. Marner’s line was just so much more skilled than the opponent it seemed like they scored at will, and Tkachuk’s style of play handled so much of the physicality that Marner could stay on the perimeter. In some of the toughest games, including the memorial cup final, Marner was still good, and deserved the MVP, but wasn’t always the one who scored the big goal.
I think they should have an 18-wheeler with the Leafs logo on it. It seems to be an annual event: “The 18-wheeler going off a cliff”. It is truly unbelievable.
As an American, your reactions to learning about the residential schools is the same as to when I learned about the Tulsa Massacre, or the Wilmington Coup, or the Philadelphia bombing, which happened in the far off time of 1985!!!!!! I learned about these things on Twitter after I graduated, not in school. I grew up and went to school in the same state as the Wilmington Coup and there was never a hint of it in our education. It is a horrible realization as to how far systemic racism reaches
I know these things are not comparable, but as a hockey fan from Espoo Finland I know very well what pain caused by a team that you love is. Our team was promoted to the SM-Liiga back in 1992. We had 2 final appearances (2008 and 2011), but then came 2016 and the team went bankrupt. A new team was quickly formed and they started at the 2nd tier of Finnish hockey system. Then came 2018, just 2 years after its creation the team went bankrupt. A new team was formed and this time we had to start at the 3rd tier of Finnish hockey system. After 2 strong years in the 3rd tier and being promoted to the 2nd tier the pandemic hits and the financial situation is dire... There is a silver lining to all this tho. The current management is very capable and the current team has gotten lots of support from Espoo trained players (of whom there are multiple in the NHL atm) and we did survive the pandemic season, even if barely. What I'm getting at with this is that, even if the team isn't performing, at least you have a team =) (and no I'm not trying to diminish your frustration and pain just tried to say that it could be worse)
Commented before I listened to the end part. Such a sad part of our distant to shockingly recent past. Every person in Canada should know this, and its something I only became aware of because of Gord Downie's Secret Path project. All I can say is keep spreading the word, we as a species are capable of talking ourselves into the most horrific cruelties imaginable.
For myself the PP is sooo clear, AM plays the shooting role on the right wing for one timers as a leftie, MO up top dishing the passes, Simmonds and Hyman get in front of the net, and my wildcard on left side is Spezza, a right handed hard shooter taking one times!! clear as dirt
I get the point but I disagree on trading the core pieces (unless it's favourable ofc). It may be too early for some to acknowledge, but there was progress on almost all ends --- steamrolled everyone in regular season, more engagement and commitment defensively.. Loosing to the Habs in 1st round is bad, but not something that can't be redeemed. It came down to the two individual mistakes in OT. It's a thin line between winning and loosing... Playoffs are all about matchups and adjustments - the Leafs didn't make any adjustment but I'd argue they didn't had much room to begin with... Too many similar "status quo" players i.e. Engvall, Mikheyev... In saying that, I would like Kyle to further diversify our depth.. More abrasive, mean, tough and able to wear down/annoy opponents - as opposed to betting on speed and... tenacity? And I don't think trading Mitch is a necessity here. All-in-all, I think the team (the core) is still heading down the right path and on the verge of something good. Cheers!
@@erikmacaluso all they have is atrocious takes . they make fun of edmonton when at least we have made the finals in my life time. the leafs havent made the second round in 17 years lol
When the kids were taken from their homes many of our people fled into the woods. I know of stories of elders who hid in the woods for days before their parents were able to come find them. Imagine being a small child alone in the woods.
Thank you guys for talking about residential schools. Something important to add - the schools may have closed, but the disparity continues. You mentioned the high rates of tuberculosis back then; this continues today! Indigenous people in Canada have almost 300 times the risk of getting TB than non-Indigenous people. There is a lack of adequate on-reserve housing, leading to crowding and increased transmission of infection. There can be significant restrictions on access to quality medical care. Some communities still do not have reliable access to clean drinking water. It's unbelievable to think that this can happen in Canada in 2021. If you're looking for a more meaningful way to get involved, contact your local MP. Write to the office of the Prime Minister. Advocate for change. As you said, we need more than thoughts and prayers, or a filter on our profile pictures.
"Nick Foligno's post game interview will be in a car on the way back to Columbus." LMAO. As a Jackets fan, I love that. We absolutely adore Foligno here, apart from his stupid Papa John's commercials. We were devastated to see him and Savard go.
I don't think he's going back unless he wants to make less then he can somewhere else. I think CBJ is going for the NYR retool after this season, especially now that they're likely to move Jones before the draft.
@@futuresequence. hey you don't say that. You're probably right, and we might even lose Laine, which means PLD walked for basically nothing, and we're still paying him.
@@rowanblaze4185 I don't think Laine will be going anywhere. Once he grows up and starts acting like an adult his skill will have him challenging Matthews again.
You can't blame the flat cap for any problems. Many other teams are in a tough spot for the same reason. I know it sucks, but it's not an excuse. Marner is overpaid, no matter how much gerrymandering you try to do. Edit: Thank you for shedding light on such a serious topic. Is so tragic and so many of us need so much more education on this. I'm ashamed to admit how little I know and how much of a bubble I have been living in my whole life. It's just disgusting. This needs to be acknowledged and we should all do our part.
For all of his faults. At least Nylander plays the same no matter what the situation. they could be in a really close game in the playoffs or they could be getting completely destroyed and he still plays like Nylander. People say that he doesn’t care and while I don’t think that’s true if it is it actually might be an advantage in close games in the playoffs because he doesn’t get nervous and start making mistakes.
Great show. We all want to knw what the future is for the Leafs. One historical correction for Adam. Manitoba joined Canada in 1870. BC joined the following year, as the promise of the national railway began....west from Winnipeg.
I think its incredibly important to remember that: The Government == The People. We can say all the things we want about how its the governments responsibility to educate and reperate, but WE are the governemnt. WE as Canadian citizens bear that responsibility as well, and we need to do all of that and more.
Adam saying Ducharme is not a good coach when he clearly outclassed Keefe with the Danault vs Matthews match-up, the managing of his top 4 in Def and the line changes...while Keefe kept Matthews and Marner together so Danault could shut them both...

@@dominiquerichard1342 I disagree. They were very hard of Mikeyev etc.
I first heard about residential schools last year through the CBC podcast Missing and Murdered. I highly recommend listening to it. Really opened my eyes to the struggles that the Indigenous are going through as a result of going through the residential school system. Absolutely horrific
BEEN WAITIN
People forget that Mikheyev was being talked about for the Calder last year. I believe he is a really good player with offensive upside. But he has become what he was told to become. Last year he filled in on the first line and second line a lot and did very well. This year Keefe played him as a 3rd liner and a penalty killer. He had 23 goal season in the KHL before he signed with the leafs. I think he has a lot more upside then we think. Minnesota would appreciate him with Kaprizov
I laughed so hard and played over the mom part about 5 time. Steve’s face absolutely kills me
full props to Adam for brining up the Residential schools topic. Much needed
To be fair Steve, Hutch definitely *can* stop pucks well at the AHL level and he's said that he signed because he loves playing with the Marlies.
You know the Leafs lost an elimination game when the pod goes nearly 2 hours...
I remember when 2hrs was the norm 😔
"None of the first round 1-4 matchups are interesting. No way Habs wins, it's kinda boring" Your words. Not mine.
they wont acknowledge that
Just want to say bravo! and I tip my hat to you guys talking about the residential school thing and it was so well in depth.
(1:21:39) where they're talking about the hamburgler moment, the sad part is that what we had in Jack Campbell this year
i dont get how you guys dont have more views, but very glad you still do it, much love homies
Because there's a million of these with the leafs
Adam and Jesse are way to happy for them to be Leaf fans. Steve is in anguish. My Bruv, I’m with you.
I would also be devastated if the Leafs lose Zach Hyman. He's tied for my favorite current leafs player.
A captivating reading touching on residential schools and rediscovering one’s lost culture is Keeper'n Me. I read in university and loved it. Highly recommend it.
I wish Adam was my History teacher. Thanks for another lesson in the country's history.
They bring Pierre on to talk about how he coached for the Penguins and that time Lemieux and Jagr got together and scored a goal during a game.
If your top talent can only score against lesser talent, does that really make them elite?
@@nickrenick5887 We got a remember that they are all NHL level players. They’re technically is no easier line but better ideal match ups.
Look at the player who shut down McDavid, but nobody’s talking about how deadly he is as a defensive player.
We also got a remember that these elite players on the maple leafs could’ve scored many goals but it was just missing by inches and if Simmons scores that one goal the series would’ve been different
Thank you for the coverage on the residential schooling atrocities here in Canada. ❤️
Steve as an oilers fan I wish we had someone like you to talk about the oilers in the good times and the bad leafs nation needs you Steve
At least it's not early 2010s anymore
Is it just me or does this podcast deserves 1m more followers best hockey podcast anywhere and this is said by a die hard habs fan
So, what I've learned in the last two playoffs is that come postseason I'd rather have Jamie Benn and a one legged Tyler Seguin than Matthews and Marner...
You guys are incredible. Thank you.
Adam I've been usually in a Love/Hate relationship with you but by golly I've been lovin' ya lately buds!!
This is gonna be a tough one...
Thank you for recognizing the residential school survivors.
The US has just as brutal of a history towards our indigenous people. It's astounding.
This episode was quality.
What I'm getting at with this is that, even if the team isn't performing, at least you have a team =)
(and no I'm not trying to diminish your frustration and pain just tried to say that it could be worse)
"Does it taste like Mom?" - Jesse Blake
For myself the PP is sooo clear, AM plays the shooting role on the right wing for one timers as a leftie, MO up top dishing the passes, Simmonds and Hyman get in front of the net, and my wildcard on left side is Spezza, a right handed hard shooter taking one times!! clear as dirt
MO?
Cheers!
Hello, it is I, sicko, here to declare that this series was the hockey gods punishing you guys for Adam's perennially atrocious takes
Well put!!
Either that or his head bands
Adam, Steve, and Jesse's perennially atrocious takes.
We were devastated to see him and Savard go.
you can gladly have him. Toronto barely even used him.
I will not tolerate this Foligno’s Favorite slander lol
YES I've been waiting all day!
Secondary scoring was not a problem, 16 and 34 choked
Thanks for the history corner, really important to share this information as widely as possible!
That Jack Edwards comment had me laughing
It's time for Sandin, Liljegren and Robertson to get regular ice time.
1:06:35 LMFAO "Look at steves face. I just wanna kiss you. Im so sorry. I just wanna tell you itll be okay"
We as Leaf fans are at the point that if and when we finally win a series : we won’t even cheer, it will be like “Finally you bastards”
Great show. We all want to knw what the future is for the Leafs.
One historical correction for Adam. Manitoba joined Canada in 1870. BC joined the following year, as the promise of the national railway began....west from Winnipeg.
Adam's crypto takes colder than his salary cap takes
Nice touch to the logo
I think its incredibly important to remember that:
The Government == The People.
We can say all the things we want about how its the governments responsibility to educate and reperate, but WE are the governemnt. WE as Canadian citizens bear that responsibility as well, and we need to do all of that and more.
If I could I would give all three of you a giant hug. I love you guys. In Danish we say "time heals all wounds" Hang in there!
Want to know who might have been able to calm down Marner and calm his nerves, his close friend Matt Martin.
also some adversity earlier in life, he's SOFT!
@@MJ-mt8qp you're probably softer
Adam saying Ducharme is not a good coach when he clearly outclassed Keefe with the Danault vs Matthews match-up, the managing of his top 4 in Def and the line changes...while Keefe kept Matthews and Marner together so Danault could shut them both...
That's what I was saying and Montreal won game 1 against Winnipeg so I think the team does better than everyone is giving them credit for
Waiting all day for this podcast 😭
*in outer space looking at the Earth*
Steve: when did everything become a meme?!
Astronaut: always has been...
If your a true leafs fan than after 4 game when they go up 3 to 1, your thinking immediately there going to drag this onto a game 7
This is exactly what I thought when we won the 4th game
I after the bruins game 7 I'll never get my hopes up again lol

Tampa had SEVERAL deep playoff runs prior to winning the cup. Not a great comparison
Spezza and Nylander played very well. If this team wasn't injured it would have been a different series.
