The Blackhawks were fined $2 million for covering up sexual assault. Ten years ago, the Devils were fined over $3 million and lost draft picks for circumventing the salary cap. That's a slap on the wrist for Chicago.
They should have been fined 100 million and lost their next 2 first round picks that they own. That’s a better punishment. Also, Quennville should be fired immediately. Doesn’t matter that Florida is 6-0. Winnipeg Gm should also be canned. Also, Kane and Toews need to be suspended from the team, as well as both of them including Keith need to be taken off the NHL top 100 list. Disgusting what happened.

So, the Coyotes got a larger fine for physical fitness testing prospects than the Blackhawks got from this... The NHL is a joke when it comes to stuff like this.
First. don't put the cart before the horse. The NHL has NO CHOICE but to do SOMETHING QUITE SUBSTANTIAL in terms of discipline to the Hawks no matter what ANY ONE THINKS. i will say KUDOS to DANNY WIRTZ to admit to the guilt and recognize that not only is POSITIVE CHANGE NECSSARY BUT REQUIRED. I fully expected this to be swept under the carpet because, when Dollar Bill was alive, that's what he would have done. I have been a Hawks fan for over 55 years and, the fact MY team would allow players to be treated this way, is beyond comprehension. I can kind of understand not making any public statements _during_ the playoffs. However, the fact that the Hawks didn't take _any_ _internal_ _action_ whatsoever to protect their players/staff and instead allowed Aldrich to continue his duties as video coach, participate in Cup celebrations, and ultimately make more inappropriate advances towards a young intern is appalling.
Yep. Should have been unpaid leave, and then a full investigation the day after the Cup win. Still would look bad for the delay, but at least the investigation would have been that year and Aldrich would have gone to jail/prison right away instead of more inappropriate behavior at Miami Ohio and sexual assault in a Michigan HS in the UP.
@@JHockeyFan maybe not jail/prison right away since the justice system doesn't always work that way, but definitely charged right away and hopefully no more harm done to the others. They could've even gotten the police involved pretty much immediately without having to publicize it right away.
Simple was to fire him and let the police do their investigation. Then, after the playoff run, announce why he was fired. While supporting his victims... but... Nah... they didn't even do it _after_ they got the cup.
'But we're doing so well' was the excuse Penn State used to look the other way about Jerry Sandusky. It was the reason that Ohio State didn't do anything about Richard Strauss (Thanks, Jim Jordan). @@pale_saint they failed to act knowing the information they did they choose greed instead of another humans well being… so its on them too just cause they didnt rape the guy doesnt mean they aren’t accountable
How do you not strip this team of draft picks? Money is one thing, but where is the moral argument that a team like the Coyotes loses picks for “prospect tampering” but the Hawks punishment for far worse is letting people resign and losing some money (not that it isn’t a substantial amount of money). This situation was shelved with the “on-Ice performance” in mind, there should be forfeiting of picks to go in theme with that.
If the Devils lost draft picks for the contract they signed Kovalchuk in 2011 or 2012, then Chicago should fork over draft picks for the next two seasons. And it has to be their own picks that they still have, not picks they acquired from other teams.
The two examples that have been stated on this thread relate to on ice (competition) issues. I believe a $2M fine is not enough, and would not argue against draft picks being taken away, but the Devils and Yotes situations are a bit different.
@@matt_indy agreed the scope is a bit different, but this decision to delay judgement was made with performance issues in mind. I don’t think that can be separated from this.
To be quite frank, this is probably my favourite video so far from this channel. It was very thorough and the tone was very appropriate. I hope that as much as possible comes to light about this situation and that everyone involved is made an example of publically, including the players. For this league to stay afloat with the other sports leagues today, it needs to show that it has a zero tolerance policy for this.
It wasn't one incident just before the cup finals. There were multiple incidents with multiple victims. Toews and Kane and Keith must have known. Impossible for them not to.
0 chance that the leaders of that team didnt know; and with kanes own accusation history I find it even harder to believe he wasnt the one cracking jokes tbh
how do you know that there were multiple incidents - there is nothing in the independent report that indicates that . That would be important to the case - if you know that you should serve as a witness. please surrender to the court -for discovery and you can be called as a witness

They had the perfect chance to deal with this issue relatively quietly in the summer after the cup celebrations and all that, yet they're still waiting for the right moment over a decade later. I don't buy it that team chemistry and the cup run was ever much more than a convenient excuse.
Best way to handle it would have used the day of the cup parade so no one would be near the arena and the arrest could go quietly. Like they had the ability. Now heads are gonna roll across the league.

As a hawks fan, I always had a feeling it ran deeper than what they were telling the media simply to save face. Honestly I'm really impressed the investigation was so thorough and actually fair to the victims. You hear about it all the time with teams hiring their own investigators and it eventually fades away. On the executive side, I'm glad they're all gone, I'm especially glad that Bowmans gone. Now we just have to see what the Jets and the Panthers do. From a player perspective I have no doubt that Toews and Kane lied about not knowing probably to save face but also probably mostly because of the organization pushing them to remain neutral, I know fellow Hawks fans can only hope that neither of the two were in the same group as the players who bullied the victim. Regardless of what happens next I'm glad the investigation actually got to the bottom of the case and presented all the correct information and I hope the victims get true justice for what happened all those years ago. The next two weeks are going to be a hell of a ride for multiple organizations but hopefully now the hawks organization can move forward from this and build to be better.
Thank you, Shannon. You promised to talk about this when the report was made public, and you have done so with all the professionalism and authenticity I would expect from any top shelf news organization. But when you note this is just the beginning for this, regarding the Blackhawks, I can't help but hear, "This is just the beginning of the change of hockey culture as a whole." Because as several commenters have already noted, the attitudes that were at the core of this tragedy, are at the core of organized hockey at all levels, so there must have been - and still be - more unreported tragedies like this out there. It is time to start revealing those ugly truths, and start dealing with them. Let's really start taking care of the people involved in hockey at all levels.

It's amazing how much attitudes towards sexual assault allegations have changed in the past 10 years. The Blackhawks' attitude in 2010 was disgusting, but it was also typical at the time. Things like this in all sorts of organizations were just brushed under the rug. I don't say that to defend the Blackhawks, I say that to condemn all the many organizations that acted like they did at the time. The victims who came forward got ridiculed and ignored, and I'm sure plenty of others never came forward because they knew it was useless. The Me Too movement did a ton to change those attitudes, and those involved in it deserve a ton of credit. We're still a long ways from where we should be, but we're a lot closer than we were in 2010. And with that in mind, we're kidding ourselves if we think the Blackhawks are the only NHL team with a skeleton like this in their closet. I would bet a lot of money that similar things happened at other NHL teams, but they were better at covering it up or getting the victims to stay silent. Maybe some of those stories will come out now, but even if they don't we shouldn't pretend that they don't exist.
Agreed and well said. The events were horrible but sadly typical of the era. Yet, today, people are often addicted to the feeling of moral indignation.

I’m a Chicagoan and lifelong Hawks fan, so this really hurts. I have grown to respect the organization because they’ve typically stood for integrity, and this is just unacceptable and a dark, dark period for the Hawks. Maybe even the darkest. That is very relevant to the way in which the team proceeded. But again - you said criminal behavior - what was the criminal behavior? A case like that is taken on contingency - meaning the lawyer is not paid unless there is a compensation and then it is 33% . The suit is for damages - that his hockey career was ruined because of it . Which means they will be seeking damages in the 10s of millions of dollars . He was 6' 3 230lbs - the coach is 5 '4 and 130 - if he did not want that to happen he could have gotten up and walked away - And the most damning part of his entire story is about the woman report p 32-33 . - i expect the coach and Beech to describe things differently - but i cant account for a woman with nothing to be gained and in an obviously embarrassing situation - has her account very similar to the coach - and drastically different than Beech - makes his account very suspicious . When i was that age i was in the very similar position as he claims to have been in a few times . I don't like to see bad things happen to people - so honestly i hope his lawyer settles the case . because if he has to be deposed with 10s of millions of dollars on the line - a lawyer will tear his story apart and it will be more traumatic than the actual event - that would be a real shame . I just happen to have lived in the real world - I don't automatically believe everything someone says when they are attempting to receive many millions of dollars - especially when there are several obvious discrepancies.

This aches, and casts a permanent shadow over the organization and their semblance of dynasty within that decade. I'm barely older than Toews was when he must have heard this. It sickens me to see that this was swept under the rug by coach Q, Bowman, Wirtz and every single player involved. The Toews jersey usually hanging on my wall has been banished to my closet. Can't wait for my Kraken jersey to arrive. Go Kraken go, until I can find it in my heart to forgive the organization
Such a powerful video had to watch twice. Wanted to blame everyone involved but then asked "What would I have done in that scenario?". Yes yes I can hear everyone saying "I would have blown the whistle at the start". And how many times have all of us kept their mouths shut and looked the other way when others have done wrong? You can all be excused for looking at your shoes. At some point in ones life you might take a stance and say "From now on I will do right, consequences be damned". If the Devils lost draft picks for the contract they signed Kovalchuk in 2011 or 2012, then Chicago should fork over draft picks for the next two seasons. And it has to be their own picks that they still have, not picks they acquired from other teams.

Such disgusting conduct by the entire organization as well as the league for letting it get this far.
Either he's unbelievably upset that something like this was kept from him, or he's misrepresenting what he knew. In his interview he stated "I didn't know anything, and you can print that". Seems like an odd response to something like that. It just smells, really, REALLY bad.
Hmm...I think there are several other possibilities. Such a situation seems obvious after the fact. If this came to your attention vaguely as a possible rumor, something you wouldn't want to repeat etc. Living within this kind of problem is not like reading a headline of a news story. Sometimes this court of public opinion gets it wrong even though it thinks it always gets it right.
Thank you for reporting on this, even though it was clearly heavy and weighing on you. As it is all of us.
Everyone who knew and let it go on needs to get the boot. The CEO's statements today were embarrassing. As a Hawks fan, our Dynasty is tainted because of these goons...
I wouldn't say their wins are tainted. The players still earned those cups. However, as a long time Hawks fan, I'm glad they're going to be wiping their front office after this. It's the least they can do to have some accountability for the actions that should have been taken care of a long time ago.
Not a Blackhawks fan but I do have sympathy for the fans, this is a tough pill to swallow
@@scottbecker4367 their wins are 100% tainted and always will be. Every time people think of those cup teams they’re only going to think about child molestation and rape.
Dynasty?
@@Yupthereitism I won't. I've already separated them from the incident in my head.
Hey man - Thank you for this video. Hard to watch but it puts everything out there.
This also comments on the character of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. They were leaders of that team and its clear now they cared more about winning than protecting the players they lead.
Reminds me of Penn St. and the ignorance of those culpabily involved.
As an Oilers fan this is why i"m fucking livid with having Keith on my team. He was a leader and KNEW what was going on.... Kane, Toews, Seabrook, Keith and any other main core member who stayed around for every game of the incident IS to blame.
Where is the anger? Where is the outrage? I'm so fucking tired of living in a world where we try and save face for people we don't 100% know are at fault yet they are standing at the front of the burning house as the cops chase a handful of others down the street
Keith has stated he knew nothing or even who the victim was.
@@yegman You're a fucking moron if you think Toews, Keith, and Kane didnt know what was going on. They ran that fucking organization and had a relationship with every single person in the building bc they were pampered. There is 0 chance they didnt AT THE VERY LEAST hear rumors about it.
@@yegman And that is very possible - those players were playing a game in Vancouver or San jose when the event happened - but again there is no reason why they would even know much more than who Kyle Beech even was - he did not practice with them he would attend games in the press box probably along with lots and lots of other people . That he was a 1st round pick - they might know more - but not necessarily and exactly why would they be responsible for everything that happened to the guy - they weren't there - they had nothing to do with it - honestly i can not even understand where some of these insane accounts come from
One of your best videos. Probably the most emotional I’ve seen you but it’s well deserved. Messed up situation
Remember how everyone was commenting on the Blackhawks awkward celebration when they won in 2010. That had to be a grossly uncomfortable locker room
Good coverage of a tough subject sir. Your empathy and do the right thing personal attitude running underneath the surface while discussing the facts is actually comforting.
I am really thankful the Hawks organization did such a thorough investigation. Finally, FINALLY giving the victims their due diligence. I hope this brings them some peace
Thank you for making this; I’m sure it was tough to make, it was tough to watch.
Bowman, Quinville and everyone else who was culpable should be banned for life.
Including Gary Bettman himself.
Thank you, Shannon, for striking exactly the right tone with this. Criminal behavior, and covering it up for the sake of a Cup run, cannot be tolerated. As a significant voice of NHL fandom, you've done the sport a service here. Just another reason I'm a regular and loyal viewer of your channel.
where is there criminal behavior ? I don't know where you live but what two adults do in their own home is their own business. BTW the player never came forward to the team. The team heard a rumor and approached the player - he reluctantly agreed to being harassed . They got their human resources involved and had the coach separate from the team at the end of the season . You might know about laws that the rest of the world are not aware of.
@@pjpredhomme7699 0:52, 5:50 Take it up with THG. And Quenneville, and Bowman, and Wirtz. Their actions speak louder than your nothing-to-see-here narrative.
@@barkofsky11 first of all - His whiteboard is wrong - about the meeting - 5/23/21 the title says sexual assault allegation - and that is 100% false - what the team knew about at the time was that the video coach had made unwanted advances while they were on a road trip - nothing more - and that was confirmed by the player- that is what the meeting was about . That is very relevant to the way in which the team proceeded. But again - you said criminal behavior - what was the criminal behavior? This is a civil case - which although you are an expert apparently in criminal law is not the same . BECAUSE there is NOT a crime committed. It was treated as an HR issue- because it was discussed as an HR issue. I am actually sympathetic of the victim -and so I really hope that he has a compassionate lawyer and she settles but that will be hard . A case like that is taken on contingency - meaning the lawyer is not paid unless there is a compensation and then it is 33% . The suit is for damages - that his hockey career was ruined because of it . Which means they will be seeking damages in the 10s of millions of dollars . If the victim thinks he is traumatized now - he has not seen anything until he has to be deposed by a lawyer - with his story compared to the other witnesses . that would be a lot more traumatic for sure.
@@pjpredhomme7699 What was the criminal behavior? The sexual assault of Kyle Beach by Brad Aldrich, described by Beach to the Blackhawks' Jim Gary just before the May 23 meeting of upper management, per the Jenner & Block report. You presume Beach lied. I don't. I stand by my statement.
@@barkofsky11 well you are entitled to your opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts - You have just misrepresented what happened. Kyle Beach DID NOT report a sexual assault to Jim Gary or anyone else with the Blackhawks - that is consistent across multiple people. Gary- went to him and said he had heard that he might have been harassed by Aldrich - and Beech said he could confirm that . That is NOT sexual assault ! There was never mention of sexual assault that can be traced until this lawsuit. I don't presume Beech lied - i believe he has many millions of reasons to characterize his story differently 11 years later.
So it sounds like Bergevin wasn't involved? His name does not appear at any point in the full 107 page report.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he heard about it through the grapevine but all signs point to him not being part of the inner circle that was making decisions about this.
Seems like he was telling the truth. He was a relatively low level guy in the organization at the time (director of player personnel) so probably not aware of everything happening
I’m very certain he knew about it and didn’t do anything. I don’t believe a word that clown says
@@nintendofan7218 Pretty much but at the same time, since he wasn't in the inner circle, he's got enough leeway to wriggle out of it all. Either way, this looks pretty bad on the NHL in general. And the Blackhawks are going to mired in the shit for quite some time.
I have a hard time believing he never heard anything about it, but at least based on the report he wasn't in on any of the important meetings, etc., so he'll probably get away with it unless one of the named people subsequently fingers him.
Thanks for reporting on this Shannon.
I can only imagine how this must be for Hawks fans. The team on the ice is playing horribly and now this abomination. It's shaping up to be a brutal season and potentially more.
I’m a Chicago fan. As bad as this story is, be more sympathetic for us having to watch the Bears on Sunday.
I'm just happy that Bowman is no longer GM.
As a Sens fan, I can relate with the season because of 2018-19 when we were complete trash, we didn't have our own 1st and because of all the off-ice drama... But man is yours much worse and damning. Your fanbase plus the victims have my thoughts and prayers.
I would've added "at least you have those 2 other Cups" because the 2010 one is looking sour but there were complicit players on all 3 teams too so idk how much of the '13 & '15 championships get tarnished too. Man, I feel bad for you guys (the fans, not the team).
Yeah I feel terrible for the hawks... not the people sexually assulted. Oh and I feel even worse for the hawks bc theyll get a lottery pick for shane wright now too. Boo hoo gtfo and redirect your empathy to the deserving.
Help
Thanks for the honest and thoughtful coverage of this horrible event
As a Blackhawks fan it is extremely disappointing and disturbing hearing even more about these allegations
@DecrepitOrigin888 Aldrich sexually assaulted a Blackhawks player in May 2010
Agreed.
@DecrepitOrigin888 hes a convicted of sexual assault crimes hes on the sex offender list, you dont get on that list unless you have committed crimes, the player is saying he was drugged and assaulted by this monster, the monster said he agreed to it, he is also accused by a former high school hockey player of also being assaulted by this monster, do you honestly think these are his only victims
@DecrepitOrigin888 Shannon has linked to a 107 page investigation to the incident. You can find all of the answers to your questions there.
@DecrepitOrigin888 you can figure out the player pretty easily from the info in the report
I just read the report.... JESUS H CHRIST! EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE FIRED!! Great video.... this whole situation is so unfortunate.
Damn, Shannon looks extremely emotional. It is really upsetting. If Quenneville and Jets GM don’t resign, it will make the league look even worse
You really don't like how well Florida is doing
@@lanceludwig5349 Yeah, it keeps me up at night
If they don't resign, they get fired. Can't see quenneville in hockey again after this
As a Jets fan Chevey has to go. But will wait to see what Jets ownership and management do.
@@lanceludwig5349 has nothing to do with how well Florida is or isn't doing. This has to do with the fact that Quenneville put winning and not ruining team chemistry over the well being of one of this players.
Thank you so much for reporting on this, even though it is tough to do. It is so important to talk about this and not just let it slip away. This type of thing HAS TO STOP. Thank you thank you, so very much.
The 2010 team was a major part of my childhood and reason why I love the Blackhawks so much. This is a giant punch to the gut and I honestly don’t think I can be a fan for the time being. I hope everyone involved gets what they deserve including Coach Q which hurts me to say since he was so loved here in Chicago. Can’t imagine what the victim has been going through for the past 11 years.
That was a great season. You let it taint your perception of that season- I won’t.
This will set back the Blackhawks for years. THG is my main source for NHL news. No yelling, shrieking, just level headed talk with a dose of Canadian nice. THG rules!
Down the rabbit hole we go!
Buddy, I have been watching your channel for a long time and I have never seen you like this. I can tell you are holding a lot back and trying to keep it professional. I am not a Hawks fan by any means, so I can’t imagine what they are feeling on this, but I think this goes beyond just their organization. This is a prime example of clubs trying to keep serious issues internal and ether brushing it under the rug and/or keeping it out of the news. What has me pondering is the possibility of other cases of misconduct that have been buried over time. As you said this isn’t over and I hope everyone involved takes a good hard look at themselves and think was it worth it? What if it was their siblings or spouse that was put in that position etc. anyway that’s my rant, keep up the good work man! You can’t stop the signal!
Funny how the hammer happens to fall when ownership realizes the present iteration is going nowhere....
Great video!!! Always genuine and always true to your heart in your videos. The passion shows through
Embarrassing day to be a Hawks fan
Thank you for summarizing the findings and for treating the topic with the respect this needs and for showing how important this is.
I haven’t heard anything about Marc Bergevins potential involvement. He said he didn’t know anything, but as an A-GM, I can’t really believe that
Im not sure he was assistant General Manager at the time I think thats Kevin Cheveldayoff I read somewhere that Bergevin was in charge of scouting and player development, I could be wrong tho
Wow, what a shame. Thanks for the update and detailed answers. I use to have a lot of respect for Coach Q.
I've fallen in love with the Blackahwks in 2009 when i was 10 or 11 years old. Toews is my hero and he has been so for well over a decade now.
Certainly sounds like the right time for a fresh start with a new team to root for. This whole situation is so unfortunate.
ya dont blame you, never liked chicago but they're definitely one of my least favourite teams now
I am 78 years old and thr Blackhawks were my dads favorite team, so they were mine. Living in Seattle and a happy Kracken fan. It’s just horrible
Do not judge those who have yet to reach that point for you would have been in their shoes. Shannon I can tell it took a lot out of you to make this video, don't know if I could have done same.
I will give the NHL till Friday. On Friday if Chevy is still the GM of the jets and on Friday if Quinville is still the bench couch for the panthers I will be shocked and pissed off. How can these people but a hockey game before the own players livelihood… what a joke. They should all be ashamed. Thanks for reporting this Shannon.
Thank you for covering this, Shannon. Here’s hoping you’re right and that this is only the start of all the changes.
Makes me wonder if the Sharks had an incident with him as well since his departure with the organization was rather sudden.
Yeah, they sure seemed eager to get Tallon to hire him. Which he did, unfortunately. Yeesh.
As a Hawks fan, thank-you for doing a video on this. It's hard to describe how heartbroken I am. My mom is 80 years old now. She and I enjoyed those games and team together in 2010. And that's tainted now. I'm trying to hold on to those memories with my best friend. I think Hawks fans should come together to show Kyle and the young man in Michigan our support and help to raise awareness about male victims of sexual assault not only in sports, but wherever it happens.
Excellent piece on an awful topic Shannon. Really well put
Very well done reporting Shannon.
I feel as if I am at a funeral, but it's time to bring this forward.
And then they get Connor Bedard. They were punished less than the Coyotes for testing prospects.
Incredible coverage as always.
