At least we still have the Lions, which is not a sentence I thought I’d ever say without laughing.
@moochnmunch You won 2 cups in the 90s back to back and 2 in the 2000's. You'll be okay.
@@GabbyBabby-pp1lxlast cup was 16 years ago. The past success doesn’t matter to a new generation of fans.
Don't say it too loudly the coach cost the Lions that playoff game last year, all by himself. If things end up with the two best teams in the NFC that means the Eagles and Lions will face each other in the Championship game. That will be the real Superbowl as those are the two best teams in the entire league IMO. It could go either way my friend!
I was fortunate to be around when The Lions won in 1957. I was 2 weeks short of my 6th birthday.
My Father, and his Brother took their oldest sons who were both 12 at the time. Both our families got together for breakfast that morning and the big kids went to the game, as the rest of us watched it on TV, and my mother and Aunt, and the 2 oldest girls played assistant, and prepared a big Sunday Supper, for when the "Men" got home from the game.
My memories are really of the day, more than the game, at this point, and at 72 and starting to experience some health issues, and being the only remaining one from my family, and just losing my cousin 1 week before Christmas, I'm really hoping that The Lions can pull this one off. It would really put me in a much happier place for a little while.
As for The Wings, I'm just hoping that Stevie, can get this team competitive in the next 5 years, or so. It sure would be nice to see a Red Wing raise The Cup up over their head, before my time runs out.
Campbell should coach the red wings and the lions lol. Imagine Campbell behind the bench ahahaha.
I am okay with Yzerman, but his pro-scouting team is clearly a disaster. Replaced all depth scoring with free agents who can't produce this offseason and spent a lot of money and term on mediocre players in Copp, Compher, Holl, and Chiarot. I am still waiting for all his prospects to make the league before I make any changes. But if he cannot fix his pro-scouting, it will be hard to ever push this team to the highest level, even if all our prospects hit.
yeah - Kirk Maltby, Yzerman's brother - are pro scouts - not a great look.
It's the same problem with the Rangers need better draft guys bring in too many free agents then no money to pay regular guys
Jesse wallin is pro scout director. Jesse wallin. I don’t get it. Also yzermans brother is a pro scout.
Sorry but both Holl and Chiarot are done after next year. Copp and Compher are both still below 30 years of age. This 10 mil is not the problem. The problem is lack of 7-8 mil guys worth their salt.
@@davidkruse4030 Wallin is the Chief Amateur Scout. They don't have a Pro Scouting Director.
I think Shannon could fix the Wings
Sometimes, I’m curious about what kind of GM Shannon would be 😀🤔
He's quietly been in our corner long enough. I trust him.
1. Create time machine.
2. Bring Nicklas Lidstrom of 20 years ago to the present.
3. ???
4. Profit.
Quit stealing notes from Chris.
Honestly put him somewhere, need a new voice
I could write a college thesis on the issues with the way the Wings were playing that I attribute to Lalonde's coaching.
-inability to create high danger scoring chances
-inability to easily exit the defensive zone
-lack of strong forechecking, hitting, and general intensity and effort
-too few shots on goal, too much passing
-too many other missing fundamentals of hockey to name
Lots of Wings fans are convinced that this is one of the worst rosters in the league, despite it being very similar to last year's team. There's a reason so many players are underperforming, and it's not that they all just suddenly became bad. Kane was good last year, and had a full summer of training for the first time in a while. There's no reason for him to just drop off a cliff like this. Lalonde's style of hockey was crushing the life out of this team.
Lmfao shooting across the league is down. They are only registering abour 1.5 fewer shots per game than they did last season. Kane is what we call old now.
You are your roster, it's that simple, Todd will come in their record might improve by .035-.050 if they are lucky, anyone who thought 'we're gonna make the playoffs' let themselves down, by getting to up on this team. We have 8 guys that do about the same thing, too many D (that do about the same) and 3 goalies that are the same. It would be nice to pick top 3, we signed too, too many fillers (chariot etc) for way too long, that should have been cap space weaponized for picks, each year.... nope.
Ok I agree with most of this and it’s good reasoning, but losing walman and ghost, even arguably Matta, to have the Defense we have now was such a big step back imo. But getting really good goaltending but not scoring goals is a new problem
In summary dump and chase doesn’t work when your guys are too tired from defending and need a line change - and when they’re not changing lines they don’t have the speed or physicality to collect the puck. Then in the D-zone they default to no pressure perimeter style defensive like it’s a perpetual PK. Then they can’t breakout and pass bad where it’s an immediate turnover. This has been lalonde’s MO for 33+ games this season doing the same thing every game when obvious it ain’t working. The roster is bad but it’s honestly not too much different from last year overall talentwise. It’s been obvious since game 1 he’s messed with the systems which doesn’t fit the team. Guy is a scrub and the change won’t fix everything but there so much glaring fault on his decisions and leadership (lack of).
@@djk679edvinsson is way better already than walman and maata and ghost was a big PP guy yet the red wings have had a great PP - 4th best in the league until like a week or two ago. Defense is awful but i think people are undermining how much lalonde changing play style and systems has been a major issue. The roster is only half the answer. I personally see it at equal weighting with the terrible coaching this year.
Berggren and Kasper play with so much heart every game I would only hope they move up the lineup
Oiler fan here. Red Wings fans can expect two things.
#1: Vets play, prospects on a short leash, then straight to the dog house.
#2: Lineup in the blender for the 3rd if the team is down in the second intermission.
A Sharks fan tried to warn me about Mclellan when he left SJ. I didn't want to listen. He was right.
I don’t think McLelland was the greatest choice. Was really hoping they would’ve strongly considered Gallant.
@@stevenlitkey9354Gallant probably said no. Or maybe he takes over the NYR?
Lol that's what we had with Lalonde as well. He had his baggage that I'm not thrilled about, but I think Quenville would've been a really good coach for this team.
@@stevenlitkey9354gallant will was never going happen
@@stevenlitkey9354gallant hates young players too
Would rather see them get a top 5 pick then finish 12th which is what they are destined for the rest of the year
Been screaming this for weeks
The turnaraound they need is just too much to ask. I'm with you.
Going on a decade of getting top 5 picks now, throwing another year for a pick when cap space is finally used is embarrassing, this was the year to get back in playoffs.
@@hockeymike333 we've had exactly 1 top 5 pick in that time..
@@mattl2642 Wasn't for a lack of trying. Thanks Lottery.
I really like LaLonde, seems like a genuine and awesome guy. This move had to be done. I really wish him all the best in the future.
Yzerman really wanted to make this team healthier over the off-season. He gave up Fabri, who barely played at all, to Tarasanko who's already played 33 games. Maybe not the greatest move of all time, but it's fine for what it is. I still believe in the plan and I think once we start getting the young guys up like ASP, Danielson, Brandsegg-Nygård, Mazur, and whoever else. I think that's when the team takes a turn for the better.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little EXTRA
The Wings pro scouting and contracts handed out to vets have been terrible. I lost my head when the Holl deal was signed.
They have to offer lucrative contracts to vets or nobody will sign.
People often come up with "What about the Blues? They did it!" But they really don't look at the situation. Going into the 2018/19 season, the Blues had a good team. Many pundits thought they were a preseason contender. Scoring skill lead by prime Tarasenko, a big tough defense anchored by Pieterangelo, and they made moves to bring in veteran leadership in the off-season. Things went bad, quickly, mostly because their goaltender (Jake Allen) had developed a case of the yips. Then, out of nowhere, a 25 YO rookie goalie comes up and goes 25-4-1 down the stretch. Where's your Binnington going to come from?
This team has been unwatchable; right now I'd settle for entertaining hockey and let those "8 points out" unfold accordingly.
I was excited for this year, I really was. Last year we outscored our problems, and everybody from the top down knew the directive this year was to play better defense. Even with passing on resigning some players to have enough room to make the Raymond and Seider contracts work, we shouldn't have been this bad. So Lalonde doubles down on a more defensive style of play this year, and you can tell nobody is comfortable playing that way. It's boring, low event hockey. We get outshot routinely, not by a few but entire periods go by and we're outshot by 10 or more. After every game, Lalonde would tell the media "yeah, well, actually the underlying numbers say we were pretty even". I'm sorry but this team is not passing the eyeball test. Underlying numbers be damned lol. We're getting hemmed in our zone for entire periods and making it impossible for the next line to pick it up and do anything with it. If we happen to win a game, it's only because the team plays "against" what Lalonde was trying to do. The past few games it was obvious that what Lalonde was trying to do is not going to work with the players he's been given. I don't blame him entirely, he didn't choose the roster and when nobody outside your top 2 D-men can match up against anybody, there's other problems to solve. All I can hope is that the systems that McLellan brings at least plays to our roster's strength more than what Newsy was trying to force.
I would like to see Sandin Pellikka come to Detroit once the SHL season is over. This kid should be on the wing D next year.
Just got a hat trick today.
Pretty good start to the juniors
I think he should start in Grand Rapids next year and come up after a month or so to acclimate to ice difference, etc…
in 2050 "what about St Louis Blues"
St Louis went. They don't have to go anymore.
Yzerman needs to stop signing disasterous FA contracts in the summer every year.
I think this was a necessary change. Redwings still don’t make the playoffs. But I was concerned about players walking.
The Wings need a better defense, mindset wise.
Watching them not contest the net on offense, and just LET PEOPLE IN on Defense, is very aggravating.
He lost the team before the season started, didn’t he?
Based on the content of this team there are plenty of guys with goal scoring on their resume..and they didn’t do much with previous coach in recent times in Detroit.
Sometimes these are guys who have just gone into sustained dormancy because there were mixed messages or a lack of a voice coming from staff. And then guys become not so much on the stats sheet.
Hope for fans this is a wake up call that sees a more energetic effort remainder of season.
Yeah, This team on paper is better than 13-17-4. But when most of the team just seems to be floating. I am a Wings fan and even some of our wins weren't entertaining because we still played with a complete lack of vitality. I'm hoping the coaching change will help them snap out of it, and at least get a respectable finish even if we don't make the playoffs.
Maybe the reuniting of Todd and Talbot from the days with the Oilers can help Detroit.
Bro that was like prime Talbot 7 years ago not 37 year old Talbot 😂
Plus the Wings look far less physical than last year, probably to avoid the risk of penalties because of their awful PK. But it's a downward spiral to play that passively. All of the lost board battles, free passes to the front of the net, and the near total absence of a forecheck, just set up the same sequence of the Wings constantly backing up into their own zone without engaging. When even guys who made careers out of fearless play like Copp or Chiarot fall into giving opponents a free pass with a token poke check, they just looked deflated under Lalonde and Boughner. They're probably not going anywhere this year, but they should at least be harder to play against.
If SY would have kept Walman and Gostisbehere, this season wouldn't be good, but not quite so bad.
My confidence in the Yzerplan took a major hit the day Stevie signed Justin Holl to a multi year contract after he was booed out of Toronto, a team with a terrible defense. Some coaching change had to be made, but it should have been made after they came back winless from the West coast trip. Don't think much will change with McLellan. The players aren't good enough to do much at all. Playoffs are out of the question. Steve needs to find a new GM and scouting staff.
He did the same thing bringing in Dan Girardi in Tampa, he had the worst corsi, Rangers fans chased him out and bought out by ranger. He gave him 3 years contact. There is something with him that likes mediocre D
Usually a few players will improve under a new coach and a few players will be worse, with players getting a clean slate to convince the new coach why they deserve more ice time and special team time, but mostly it just gives Yzerman a little more breathing room to make some changes and hope they end up as improvements.
Grand Rapids Griffins, iykyk
I remember when the Red Wings held the hockey record for playoff appearances in a row. It's been a whirlwind. They used to be the Ducks' rivals too.
The price tags on some of these players discussed here is definitely a large problem. Yzerman used money to get players in, but at this point let the veterans go and go young and grow like we should have several years ago.
Excellent video as always!
Thanks for the video! Wings have a lot of talent but questionable depth. Maybe the coaching change will light a fire under the lower producing players. Gotta give it a week or two to find out.
Thank you Hockey Guy you sir are truly a great fountain of knowledge and what’s happening this is truly the best place for hockey news and information thank you
Wings aren't making the playoffs. I think this was more about changing the culture and style of play for this season. They still have way too many players on the downswing of their careers on bloated contracts to be a playoff team this year, and probably next as well. We need Copp, Compher, Petry, Holl, Husso and Chiarot all off the books, and I believe this is Husso's and Petry's last year, but the rest have more term. I'm looking more towards them making a playoff run in 26-27, maybe even 27-28 if Cossa's development takes longer. I think this season is done. It's just about developing the young players and getting the players adjusted to McLellan's system and coaching style. Yzerman really needs to start doing a better job of signing free agents. I've liked a lot of his draft picks, but his free agent signings have been disastrous for this team.
Wings fan here. The roster took a dump this offseason and there was rumors of locker room chemistry issues which I frankly don’t believe. The way this team fought at the end of the year last year was amazing. Perron, Sprong, Walman, Ghost, Fabbri, all gone. We are completely careless with the puck. Our ability to exit our own zone with the puck is basically zero. The PK is just an absolute embarrassment. Idk how we waited this long for a coaching change. I was all on board for the Yzerplan last year and in less than 1 year the entire fan base is left scratching our heads and pissed off.
Don't forget about Maatta. He had the highest +/- rating on the Wings and was the only Dman that could carry the puck out of the zone. Maatta, Walman, Sprong and Fabbri were not cap issues and were sent packing for nothing. Ghost was a must sign, but was probably a cap issue player to get Raymond and Seider signed. Replacing Ghost with Gustafsson as the PP "quarterback" has been a disaster.
@ I knew I was forgetting someone.
Great Video, as usual, Shannon - I think the coaching change in Detroit can't hurt them. At the very least, it's some type of a change to a bad season.
Kane having 14 points this season, shows how far he's fallen.
Can’t blame a man for aging
He didn't just magically get old over the summer. He's struggled under Lalonde's system as much as anyone.
@@darkphoenix2 ain't going to get much better under Todd's defense heavy system
He is slow and not physical. He is only viable on the pp.
What sucks is we don’t have that fast paced kaner anymore. He kinda just glides around passing the puck, we need somebody that can throw a check here and there and can set up good plays. I swear every game I’ve watched Detroit play this year we haven’t been able to keep the puck in their zone other than being on a PP, that’s not acceptable
Kind of getting sick of people dismissing teams' standings with, "Remember St. Louis!"
The reason what St. Louis did is so extraordinary is because it is _RARE_ because it is _DIFFICULT_ to do.
We’ve been sold the glorious Yzerplan for almost 6 years now. The plan was to slowly build and make the playoffs. Now the team is regressing and most of Stevie’s biggest moves have been highly questionable. Most if not all of his long term signings have been busts and other than his first round picks most prospects in the pipeline don’t show much potential. As fans were getting tired of hearing how the organization doesn’t expect to make the playoffs year after year when we hit the halfway point of the season. Ownership is a joke and as long as corporate sponsorship money keeps coming in nothing will change.
His pro scouts are a joke. Take a look at the list of pro scouts.
You are right on the draft. They have completely wasted picks after the 1st round. Teams like Dallas have a great gm. Pro scouts and amature scouts.
Look at their team it’s a great mix of young talent and veterans
It'S aLL bEcaUsE oF thAt TraSh LoGo On tHe JeRseYs!!
Since they kept improving every year point wise, I feel like most didn't expect this. Either way, I don't feel like their decline is too surprising. Some of Yzerman's moves have been odd. As a Larkin fantasy owner, I hope he improves.
There was talk about a little regression perhaps but as it stands now, they're on pace to 75 points for the season. That's a pretty big regression from 91 last season.
It won't make a difference this season, this team is just not very good top to bottom outside of 4-5 players. Defense has always been an issue during this rebuild. Also I'm not seeing how Todd comes in and changes much, he was under .400 with his last team and overall right around a .500 coach for his career. So we basically replaced mediocrity with mediocrity and looks like the only reason we hired this guy is because he used to be in the org. We have a ton of guys that are inside the org just because they were on a cup team and they aren't any good at their jobs. Pro scouting has been horrible for awhile now. We are still a couple of years away from even contending for a playoff spot so I hope fans are ready for a few more years of being bad. Given how bad we've started off and with no answers anywhere, they'd be better off just tanking for a good lottery pick.
They at least made a reasonable change. Cheers from a rangers fan.
Definitely think the honeymoon phase is over in Detroit. Steve hasn’t delivered on bringing us back to relevance, we’ve simply gotten slightly better, then the roof caved in and here we are. McClellan is not the answer/fix that will turn this whole thing around, it’s simply something new to try. We all see how he coaches teams. Not to talk down on the guy, hes an established NHL coach, but he is not the savior who fixes everything. Just a sad state of affairs for my favorite team.
- sad red wings fan
Fire SY and it will set the franchise back another 5 years.
@ I agree. I’m not calling for yzermans job. I’m simply past the point of giving him a pass because of what he inherited. He’s had this team for years now and to see what the product on the ice is producing deserves some criticism. I respect the move of firing Lalonde mid season, but I also question if mclellean is the answer long term
I'm glad that our new coach is going to win Coach of the Year!! Good for him.
I was hoping to tank the team and get Cooper on board but you can only dream. Having an NHL experienced coach will do wonders for this team. The last two coaches were both rookie head coaches. I think we’ll end up just outside the playoffs and then make it next season.
Ive only watched a handful of wings games because theyre not my team but the ones ive seen have been pretty ridiculous. These players dont seem to click its all over the place.
I'm a Wings fan who has watched most of them, and apart from a few days where the sun shined and these guys showed some fire, you're not wrong at all.
Derek Lalonde as a dunning-krueger self-professed 'analytics guy' hated Kane from before he even signed there and viewed him as a liability from the moment he signed - and treated him as such. Even after Kane led them in points per 60, 5v5 goals per 60, game winners last year and was a + at 5v5 on a bad 5v5 team and basically carried the team post-all star break to their hot streak, Lalonde still hated him and viewed him as a liability.
And when it came to this year Derek doubled down on that and buried Kane w no talent and a system that shackled him. Refused to use Kane's preferred offensive d-man on the power play as he'd been signed to play on. And put all resources towards Raymond at Kane's expense. This got Raymond his numbers but destroyed the team.
Kane has demonstrated this year in odd moments even in a stretch of recent games when given linemates he likes that he retains more or less full use of his powers. And given those linemates he carried the team to a couple huge wins over good opponents and turned Andrew Copp into a 1C for a few games. But Lalonde couldn't abide this even with his job on the line, so he stopped giving that line the top d pair ever to undercut it.
The team's best line all last year by a good margin was Kane Cat Larkin. It scored more than a goal more, gave up more than a goal less, per 60, than the Raymond version of that line. But the Raymond version of that line, stranding Kane, is what Lalonde went with from day 1 of camp and to start the year. And for the majority of the year.
Derek bet on the wrong horse bc he believed the negative national perception and biased analytics perception of Kane as an older player, and ignored both his own eyes and the results on the ice he saw all last season. And doing this cost Kane greatly - it cost him Team USA and historical numbers - and now it's deservedly cost Derek his job.
If McClellan wants to succeed the rest of this year, he will a) never use Kane with JT Compher as his center, and b) never use Kane wo DeBrincat. Those are Pat's 2 conditions. He prefers Larkin or Copp at center, but could probably make even Kasper work. Those are the conditions. Any coach who wants this year's team to not be a miserable unwatchable losing awful team had best maximize Kane and his line. That's where the offense is, that's where the momentum is, that's where the danger is. If you want the team to be a Lucas Raymond make a wish project thing, fine, but there are no wins in that direction.
Kane is a selfish player and a cancer on the team. Should have never resigned him.
He still won't be able to fix Erik Gustafsson, Justin Holl, Olli Määttä, Jeff Petry and Ben Chiarot. Can't make chicken soup from chicken shit.
Maatta was already traded away
I think one of the issues with us is we're trying to play a defense-first system when we don't have the personel to do that. I'd like to see Kane and Tarasenko get unleashed because I think that's part of their problem. With that said, I have zero expectations moving forward. I didn't expect anything special anyway, this season... but especially not now.
2nd and 3rd line has been a non factor all season
I think Yzerman is a good GM but I was surprised he didn’t switch coaches at the end of last season.
Why would he have done that?? The team tied for the 2nd wild card spot and only lost on the tie breaker. The team looked good in 4 out of the 6 months of the season and injuries is the reason why they were bad the other 2 months.
Yzerman had to field a team and putting a bunch of rookies out there before they were ready was not a good idea. The older stop gap guys just got a year older and slower while we are now finally starting to move in some young guys. 4 new young guys (if you include Berggren as a young guy) this year plus a game from Cossa. The most important thing is not that the old guys are doing good, its that the young guys are performing well and developing.
Detroit shouldn’t have any problem betting Washington just like how Chicago and San José did, as bad teams are Washington’s weakness this year xD
Debrincat is fine and not the problem in Detroit. His effort is always there and he scores goals.
I’m not worried about Yzerman doing things the “old way” considering he just locked up two young franchise players on team friendly deals. I think we’ll be ok.
This man released this video something like within an hour of Lalonde being fired
Buffalo Wild Wings yes, Red Wings no
I think Terasenko will improve his game significantly
Having a disastrous penalty kill makes a team timid and afraid to take a penalty. That's not a good way to play hickey. And it's just demoralizing to be constantly allowing power. play goals.................
Buffalo seems to be in the same spot as Detroit. The difference between buffalo doesn't have a huge commitment to the veterans like the wings.
Per Tankathon, Red Wings have the hardest remaining schedule in the NHL. Pretty sure we can forget the playoffs.
I'd like to see a few guys go, Kane who I'm sure has asked for a trade (I never wanted to resign him either). Chiarot who is grossly overpaid. Not a big fan of Veleno. I thought he was a good pick when he was drafted, but he isn't the offensive player he was in the juniors. Copp is untradeable, Petry will retire at the end of the season, and we couldn't get a bag of chips for him. I would like to see Rasmussen used differently. With his size he should be on a top line digging in the corners and getting in the goalies face. In reality Yzerman has to quit giving all these free agents bad contracts. Go with the young guys, let them get their feet wet.
BIG HIT defensemen! They need BIG HIT defensmen!!!
Well, we have MoreHits Seider! Chiarot lays bodies too. Edvinsson wants to...
So the Wings were able to make the change with firing Lalonde and bringing in McLellan. The next issue is Yzerman, because the fans were expecting big things from him after he was able to help bring Tampa Bay to where they are with their cups. He was making a lot of trades for draft capital that felt he was basically fleecing the other teams. But he has signed veteran has-beens to big contracts and big money and they haven't played to the potential of their contracts (i.e., Compher, Copp, Woll, Petry, Chairot). What is really frustrating is that the Wings barely missed the playoffs last year, and the fans were hoping Steve Yzerman would get serious and sign/trade for some players to make the Wings a definite playoff contender, and he didn't make much of a big splash in signing a big-named player, only re-signing Patrick Kane. He also did not make the defense better than last year, but rather worse. Then there's the questionable trade of Jake Walman that hasn't been really explained why he was traded with a 2024 2nd round pick. It's been 7 years since Yzerman came in and the Fans are expecting that it should be time for them to make the playoffs.
When is people going to put some accountability on yzerman? He had replaced bad contracts with other bad contracts and player development is not good there. There should be no excuses considering other teams has turn the corner around quickly during his tenure in detriot.
No, they have no depth scoring, their defense is old and lackluster, and their goaltending core is old and lackluster. They are old and lackluster except for Seider, Raymond, Larkin, and Debrincat
Must be nice winning the draft Lottery
@@LionsWingsTigers It must be nice not dropping out of the top 5 picks almost every year you team finishes is in the bottom 4, thanks to the lottery system. The wings go screwed over so often they changed the rules.
I think Todd McLellan will do well in Detroit. He's got a monumental task ahead of him though. Red Wings will probably surge for this next stretch of games, but unfortunately, they will fall just short of a playoff spot.
The answer is in the room. The Yzerplan is the players who are in the room. 5 goalers 13 wins.
Debrincat scored 67 and 66 points his last 2 seasons not playing with healthy Kane so being on pace for 60+ is right in line with who he's been. Get some guys around him who can score who aren't meh 2-way centers or over the hill Wings 🤷♂️. They don't have a top-6 they have a bottom-9
Just saw Husso in Grand Rapids where he was torched for 6 goals. Should never play for the wings again.
It's weird to throw out the coach when the season is already lost. St. Louis changed coaches after 19 games (7-9-3), they went 8-9-1 before Binnington, 11-0-0 when he came up, and finished off with 19-10-5. Basically, if you have a star goalie in the minors, you can recover, no coach change required.
who's pulling the 2019?
Would like to see Soderblom play a couple games
He can barely be productive in GR. Total bust.
The compher deal never made any sense
Thing about steve yzerman is i think at this point hes staying in the org most likely even if they decide to have a new gm i could see him just relinquishing the gm position and keeping his evp title so steves here to stay most likely no matter what unless he cares about being a gm that badly and wings decides its time for a new direction
Sure miss Walman...
Walman wouldn't be producing like he is in san jose because the offense runs through seider. Walman gets way more opportunities than he would get in detroit
I expect a full leafs game tonight in that DRW will shutout the TML 6-0
Yzerman has to take a lot of the blame. Lalonde was dead set on playing a certain way and Yzerman just didn't create the roster that could play within that system. Lalonde has to take blame for not adjusting though.
whatever that system was - the red army in their prime couldn't play that system effectively - it was brutal , and even worse to watch . I have been a fan since 1970 and this was as bad of a stretch as there ever has been .
Seider is nowhere near Norris trophy caliber. He’s a great defenseman but no way near the caliber of a Quinn Hughes, Cale Makar, etc
Phenomenal content and insight. Thanks for all the thoughts on my wings tonight. In such a frustrating season, this coaching change gives a bit of hope for a potential turnaround. Though I know the roster is to blame too and Yzerman. All that said, we need more out of our top players (Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat) and definitely more out of Kane and Tarasenko. Would like to see Cossa come up and get at least a few starts…especially if we’re out of contention in a couple months.
This is so ask and you shall receive someone asked during the Christmas live stream and here we are
Watch us catch a heater in February and mess up our lottery chances. This is not a cup winning team. High draft picks is what we need. Also need some these first round picks coming up to pan out.
Tanking for Dupont🤞
The wings had issues in the 90's until the captain bought into Scotty Bowman's defensive plan. If the new coach can improve the defense to at least help thew team start making a positive goal differential. We could be in very good shape for the rest of the season. What does everyone else think? You to Shannon, what do you think?
Play with heart and dont give anyone room..cause the lead doesn't lack speed but people who think as fast as they skate the whole league is super fast pond hockey
I promise it couldn’t get any worse. At least this is showing the team yzerman isn’t giving up on the season. The last three games you could tell there was no motivation with lalonde at the helm.
There's a difference between Holland doing nothing for this franchise toward a rebuild; and Yzerman doing his best to find the right prospects and players for the franchise. Smarter fans will know the difference. People wanna criticize the contracts but I don't see any crystal ball and winning lottery tickets.
You nailed it
Blashill redeemed maybe the problem wasn't coaching? Pizza Pizza
Blashill never was the problem, he never once had a team that wasnt 30M under salary cap...
@@hockeymike333 I thought Blashill was alright when he was with the wings. I think it was pressure from the fans to replace him, when it wasn't anything to do with him as you said. I guess people just thought a new coach would be a good way to herald the wings actually putting down some money for players that were supposed to be decent.
This season is pretty much over but now that we have an actual NHL coach, he can implement his new and certainly improved from Lalonde system for the rest of the season so we can have a chance to do better next season.
They're only out of playoffs by less than 10 points, seasons not over.
@@hockeymike333as much as I want to hope it's sadly the number of teams they have to jump that's the issue more than the point difference.
They need to jump 7 teams. The issue is that in a 3 point league we need ALL 7 of these teams to at least partially collapse. But if these bubble teams play vs eachother another 15-25 games of their remaining 50 or so... Someone has to win...
Then you look at the points issue after that... The sens are on pace for 92 points. So it's fair to assume 93-95 pts is the playoff cutoff as the bubble teams tend to gain a few points down the stretch as other teams throw in the towel and top teams rest players.
Let's assume 95 pts for a spot.
The wings have 96 potential points up for grabs. They need 65 of those... Meaning Detroit needs a .677 down the final 48 games to get in.
Impossible? No. But highly highly unlikely. Only 3 teams in the league are above that through the first 30 ish games.
Tl;Dr
The wings need to jump 7 teams
Have a top 3 in NHL record down the final 48 games with a .677 or better point percentage
None of the other bubble teams can go on a run of any kind and we need the final playoff spot to be 95 pts or lower.
I've been patient with rebuild until this year. Larkin was ranked over 300th in Cost per point last year. The production from him and cat for over $8M cap is not at par with other players in similar contracts, esp when he has 6 years left in contract and injury prone year after year. I don't like the 8 year contracts, on any team really. Can't solely blame a few players, when it's visibly poor play up and down lines. Nothing wrong with Kane's 1yr contracts, can always offload, but he's solid compared to others. Goalie game has been weird for years. Talbot started great for them though, and team couldn't find wins so can't blame netminders.
8 year contracts do not favor the team generally. Overpaying your core when you not even a legit cup contender is sooo risky.
Maybe for once they get lucky in the draft lottery.
Not if Der Commissar has a say in it.
Maybe next year. The Red Wings have ONCE AGAIN blown their chance to get in the playoffs!
Wings need far more than a Coach change.
Kane at 4 mil looks fine, but he is actual at 5,5 now because of his easy achived bonuses. And he could potentially hit 6,5 in total salary...
He won’t hit 6.5. And it doesn’t matter as it’s all this seasons cap hit
You Know Its Bad when Shannon takes an episode to tell you how rough its going to be. 😮💨
Holy shit, 9 years?
If there’s no improvement, at least to finish off playing a game or two above .500 the rest of the season, then it ain’t the coach, the spotlight has to burn bright on Yzerman.
On a long shot I’d give the youth (Bergeron and Kasper) top minutes
Red wings fan here…. This move was a year overdue. Late in the season last year when we lost 7 straight without Larkin was the nail in the coffin. If Stevie doesn’t have us in the playoffs by the end of next season he needs to be GONE!!!!
TMac will get them back in the playoffs, probably next year, but at what long term cost? Will it take a couple early exits and wasted years and/or players/prospects before he's replaced?
I have been irrationally annoyed by the word "Yzerplan." He didn't invent taking a mediocre, old team, tearing it down to nothing, and then trying to rebuild. Despite being a Bruins fan, I wish the Red Wings and their fans well.
And he kinda just replaced all the bad contracts with new ones
The target's on Y's back now.
I don’t think he made the move for the “coaches bump“. He signed McClellen multi year. This is not a short term fix.
I was hoping for Gerard Gallant but oh well at least Gru the penguin is gone!
