    The EOS R5 and R6 look amazing, but the 8k sensor on the r5 can be a blessing and a curse. Overheating isn't a small problem like a 29 minute recording limit. Once you hit an overheat shutdown, you have to stop shooting for 10-20 minutes. I suggest testing these thoroughly before any professional shoot.

    It's simple: without the active cooling, high-performing electronics will overheat, period. It's physics, you can't escape it. But considering the amount of power R5 generates and the amount of data running through it (remember that Sony uses much lower bitrates for its 4K), I would say even with these limitations Canon made quite a nice job. There's a reason why Cinema EOS cameras, which are dedicated for heavy-duty video recording, have big cooling fans and vents. Since I'm more of a stills shooter, the inclusion of IBIS is WAY bigger news for me than 8K.

      I think the issue is not the time limits themselves, but the fact that this problem is probably cumulative. If shooting for 40 mins overheats, what about if you shoot say 20mins, then 10mins, then another 15. Does it still overheat and shut off then? Honest answer at the moment is, we don't know. But if it does, and it's not that predictable, that could be a high stakes game for a pro to indulge in. It's no use explaining to the bride's mother that your camera is the shining market leader and cost you five grand if you missed the exchange of rings because your equipment suddenly and unexpectedly shut down.

    For all the people complaining that Canon is still worse than Sony:
    I'm not a Canon fanboy, I love using them but my camera is a Sony! The major complain over the last few years was that Canon's smaller cameras aren't fully packed with features (no 120 fps in the eos R) but Sony is. Now, look: Sony cameras had better specs but tend to overheat the smaller they are as the small body couldn't handle all the processing. Now Canon releases the r5, a small camera full of insane specs, which everyone wanted. These aren't just Sony's specs but they technically are way better! Therefore they overheat, maybe even faster than Sonys.
    Why should one complain?🤷🏼‍♂️

    So many reviews just blowing so much about the overheating issues jumped up yesterday - today. The thing is they are all spread by videographers. Guys, u live so much in your own world that it seems you don't see your own major misunderstanding ) U just did not get properly the target audience of these cameras - try to look from the point of view of the wider community of photographers and of Canon also ) R5 and R6 are FANTASTIC cameras FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS shooting also short videos. Just amazing AF, amazing sensors, fantastic IS, unbelievable speed of 12/20 fps!!! Plus amazingly convenient compact bodies and ergonomics! Plus the best in industry most convenient fully articulated touchscreens! Plus top-quality EVFs! Don't u really see these are just CAMERAS OF DREAM for the majority of photographers?! One should be so blind or so biased not to see or not to admit these so evident facts and so superb achievements. Anyway, for anyone who is not so blind or biased, it's clear these cameras are bound to be tremendously popular among various photographers all over the world. And from Canon's perspective - they just produced two fantastic cameras FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS with great video capacities too and a truly amazing package for affordable price. Next Canon just will produce a camera (cameras) more oriented for video. That's just it.
    But more to say, even for so many videographers R5 offers so great options of 8k RAW and 4k 120 footage recorded right in camera besides with SO AMAZING DPAF! In fact, just a pocket camera giving super high-end quality footage and with tremendously diverse lens options for it! Actually it opens great new possibilities even for high-end cinema industry! And you underestimate these cameras so much! If u are a wedding shooter who wants just shoot without much thinking the whole marriage without a break for 10 hours of oversampled 4k, then probably these cameras are just not for you. Buy something else, shooting 4k incessantly. Although, first of all, one has first to test the new cameras in real life - overheating may be not so big issue in real shooting; and, second, one can also use such cameras thoughtfully to get them do the needful work with all their superb quality, if one just finds ways to use them in an effective way. Many serious videographers already speak about possibilities to use these cameras effectively in their workflow in spite of overheating. That's thoughtful and sober practical approach, and not just condemning so mindlessly such fantastic cameras. Anyway, there are so many sober photographers and videographers all over the world for whom these cameras will surely be CAMERAS OF DREAM!

    It got leaked that Canon is releasing a firmware update to the R6, adding All-I codec for video instead of just IPB like it was supposed to only be released with originally.
    I wonder if it was the IPB codec providing additional compression, hence making your camera work harder to produce the image that was causing the overheating. Just putting out a thought

      Guido Pezz it’s continuous. After the temperature inside the camera drops (power off for 10mins) you can record for another 3 minutes or 8 minutes if power was off for 20mins. But it depends on the temperature inside the camera. If recording in intervals the camera is still generating heat.

      We expect a company to put its best face forward. We expect them to create maximum hype, and then slowly start admitting problems and letting us down slowly while still trying to keep the excitement as high as possible.
      The fact that cannon is admitting upfront "this thing overheats at 20 minutes at room temperature" means that there's no way they can plausibly deny that it's got serious flaws.

    My thoughts are this, keep in mind i'm a beginner stills photographer and not a filmmaker, how much slow motion 4k does a wedding shooter use? isn't 4k 24 still the go to for regular shooting? And if you're a professional that can afford the r5 and some rf lenses I feel like you already plan on having a b camera or ever a couple to switch between when you run into those problems.
    I feel like alot of people were looking for the hammer but not really thinking about the big picture, having 8k or even oversampled 4k 120 uncrropped raw with dpaf is insane, and it might not even be possible to eliminate overheating in a small body like this with those specs.

    I guess there's no way around overheating if your squeezing all that performance into a photo camera body what's weather sealed and not actively cooled. The video cameras have fans built in to dissipate the heat.

    You got to remember this is just with the pre-production cameras. And people like Peter McKinnon who had the camera for 5 months I'm sure have let Canon know that this issue has occurred as well as the development team. So in the last 5 months I'm sure Canon has looked into the matter. I seriously doubt they want to sell 3000 and $5,000 cameras and just have a mass recall

    • @Davitor1
      @Davitor1 4 года назад

      The camera just shuts down. It does not over heat to the point of any damage. Another fact is that you’ll run out of memory even faster at 8K. Just to have 51 minutes you need a terabyte memory card.

      I actually think binning = better lowlight performance because its averaging out the noise.

    • @geraldbaria
      @geraldbaria 4 года назад

      The Film Poets That’s oversampling. Pixel binning is skipping every other pixel, just getting the 8megs for 4K that you need from strategic pixels in the sensor. That means less info recorder, and more guessing to fill up the unused pixels. That usually creates a far inferior image, similar to the S1R.

    • @nightdonutstudio
      @nightdonutstudio 4 года назад

      Oversampling will have better low light and better detail. Say canon c100 oversampling from 4k sensor to output 1080p only. That 1080p is so detailed and have great low light performance.

    Any Camera that costs so much and overheats should not be considered by any serious video pro (which is what Canon says it is).
    If Panasonic can do FULL FRAME Photo and Video without shutting down then Canon should be able to do it (That's all they make, and they charge more).
    Second point: Every good feature here is a Panasonic invention right back to their GH2 some 10 years ago ! (down to the articulating screen). So, What could have been something I wanted (Canon 8K) is null & Void. Sony should learn a lesson here with the next S3 !

      I would add in regards to the wedding shooter comment, how many serious wedding shooters are doing video on these small bodies anyway? I would think anyone serious has actual video cameras for their video, since they need something that will last an entire event. They likely use the smaller bodies to get short videos for b roll and side angles, not as the main camera. People that are crying otherwise I feel are those that are just assuming that wedding togs are pissed that this camera won't be replacing their C300 or whatever they are using.
