If I were to get a new camera now, it would be the R6 hands down. 4K 60fps is plenty! Especially at 10 bit which is amazing! R5 is just overkill for most people IMO
I'm filming with a potato (Galaxy S10 or Logitech C920) lol. Matt, we said it in the last vid, but I want to say it again to be sure you know: your audio quality is usually better than this. On the past few vids, there is a loud white noise. IDK if it's noise from a preamp turned up too high or what. Other than that, good job!

just ordered GH5s, never been happier with any other camera decision :) great price, beastly specs and I don't fall into this high numbers hype like 6k, 8k, does not matter at all - and shouldnt matter for you too! camera is just a tool for an artist to create. if you cant create in 4k, you can't create in 8k either. dont fall into this trap!
Especially since GH5's 1080p looks almost or as identical as it's 4K and it's also All-Intra 422 10bit. 🙌🏼 4K has few advantages like cropping in post and better noise handling when downscaled but I've *never* ever gotten a client asking for 4K export, it's mid 2020 and the vast majority of people are still watching videos on their 1080p phones and screens and only few of them would be able to tell the difference between the two resolutions put next to each other.
Yeah I have the GH5s. Will keep it for a B-Cam for the time being and sell the GH5. The IBIS wobble in mckinnon's vlog video has me worrying more than overheating
I pre-ordered the R6 yesterday. Something that most people don't know: The R5's 4k/60p mode is LINE SKIPPED, while on the R6 it is true pixel binning mode (the kind you want). This means that the R6 has a clear advantage over the R5 in that res/fps (plus better low light). Overall, the R6 is a better deal for a videographer. Some things that could have been done better on the R6: All-i compression, DCI 4k (the sensor/digic CAN do it, and in fact the sensor pixel count was MADE for DCI, but then the Canon cripple hammer stroke there), microHDMI breaks way too easily (older Canon FF cams used miniHDMI), picture style support in 4k 10bit (only log/hdr are currently supported), 720p proxy support or redundancy on the second card, a larger 16:9 screen, no artificial 30min recording limitation, AWB lock, and why not, a cropped 4k/24-30p raw mode (1.33x crop). Overall, from all that, the DCI 4k was the easiest for them to add, if they wanted to. Let's hope for a firmware update with it.
majority of people can not tell the difference from ALL-I vs IPB recordings, really not a biggie. But I think Canon easily add this functionality to the R6 in a future firmware update
@@jtdiddy3160 well actually they can only in youtube you can't see because of youtube compression. Ipb for canon 4k records at 170 mbps and all-i is at 480mbps . All-i footage has better image quality, color, shadow, highlight recovery, less artifacts( when overly graded). For personal uses yeah you can use ipb but for paid jobs I won't be taking any chances.
You know the camera overheats in 4K 24p? According to canon themselves you’ll be able to record for 40min in room temperature. Abysmal, makes it unusable for any type of documentary work. And we haven’t even seen the rolling shutter - if it’s as bad as the 1dxiii it’s a deal breaker. Nothing makes footage more unfilmic than a severe rolling shutter.

Was curious to see if you had any footage with the 5Dmk4 and came across your video on your other channel with the bride/groom that planned their wedding in 3 days. Wow. It's sad, but also so awesome/joyful. My wife is due in 30 days and I have a feeling if I showed her that video she would cry for 30 mins.

Are you not worried about the overheating issue also present on the R6, with the super long recovery time for which you can start to use the camera again ? If you just do photo it might be great, though I'm waiting to see how the image and dynamic range actually look like !

That 29:59 limitations is due to stupid UK law which classifies a camera with continuous recording time > 30 min as a camcorder, which means higher tax.

Two great videos with sage advice. Wait to order until real world reviews are out there on production models for the R5, R6 and A7SIII. And don't let FOMO get the better of you. If you're happy with your present camera and/or ecosystem, stick with them. As Canon shooters will tell you, the grass is NOT greener on the other side of the fence; only the skin tones are.

This was the only video witch made common sense of R5 and R6. Seriously no need to talk about overheating . Who wants to storage that much data? 256gb CFexpress card is costing 500$ with that you can only shoot 13min video. 512gb CfExpress card costs 900$ 26 min raw. Think about transfer times of those files to PC or Mac. Also who wants to edit those giant file sizes? With 8k mode its only useful for small B-rolls and thats it. Heating should be least talked topic maybe since nobody would like to shoot with 8k that long. I believe it is too early technology to be used for full time. For small b-rolls and such can be handy of course. Good video Matt well done thanks for your effort.

I just switched from canon to Sony a few years ago and I can’t imagine going back. Sooooo hopefully whatever Sony comes out with will be something good!!
It will be. Canon, Nikon, Sony, you can't go wrong. They all make great cameras. The question is whether or not we can make great photographs (videos). Some of us have just turned into whiners, blaming our cameras for our own shortfalls. "Oh, company A has less, and company B doesn't!! If only I had camera A!!" So, what? Sell everything and but camera A?? That's what the companies want us to do! Then you can switch back next year when B has the "better" product!! All the while they will laugh all the way to the bank! Or, maybe you could create wonderful stuff with what you have, only replacing it when you really, really have to? Do that with everything you own, like cars and cell phones etc., retire at fifty and live the good life!

All of these cameras are great, but a part of me wants Nikon to somehow dunk on everyone just for the pure absurdity of it.

Preordered R6 after watching the virtual release yesterday morning. 🤞I’m not negatively surprised in anyway by ordering too soon, and as you point out, got to see it in action by reviewers before making a purchasing decision. Having said all of that, I’m extremely excited to get my hands on it.

Not at all worried about 20mp .... I've used canon cameras since the canon eos 5 (Eos A2E) film camera 1992, I went digital in 2004 & have owned the 400D, 5d, 5dmkII, 6d, 6dmkII - 20mp is a good balance of high iso performance & file size. For me canon has the best ergonomics, the camera just feels right in my hands, I used to shoot weddings & the 6d / 5dmk4 were great, I now specialise in car photography & currently own the 5dmk4 & 5dsr ..... love the resolution in the 5dsr for car photography because I sell very large prints & the files out of that camera look amazing when you print big. These are great tools to have & having the option to pick the right one for the job your doing is the way to go!
R6 doesn't record video to both SD cards, photo proxies to second SD card only. And that 30min limit and potential overheating issues at 4K60, sucks, and the 1.07x crop sucks too.

Joe Nicolette literally people have review units and canons site says you will get like 25 min of 8k. Then 10 minutes of cool down is 3 minutes more of filming. That’s horrible.
I feel like the Fuji XT3/4 hasn't gotten enough love. The R5 is great and deserves love, but the R6 is really just rehashing existing territory apart from being full frame. The Fuji does 4K 60 at 10-bit internal, does ALL-I up to 30 fps, and has higher max bit rates than the R6 as well, records video to two cards simultaneously unlike the R6 (huge deal for pro work) and has 26MP compared to the R6's 20 for photos. Also the Fuji has had external ProRes 422 10 bit with the Atomos for a while. Also the XT3/4 dynamic range is absolutely top notch, and their native glass is super fast, so a lot of the full-frame benefits are kind of nullified. I dunno, all I'm saying is there are other options.

The XT4's IBIS is not on par, their AF is not on par, it's not full frame. Canon has better video lenses. Better panning performance. Doesn't suffer from exposure stepping. Much more room for firmware updates as it's using a brand new processor and a brand new sensor. Unlike the XT4 which is more than 2 years old at this point and nearly tapped out from all the additions they added. If it works for you then that's great and all but comparing specs isn't telling the full story. There's a reason why a lot of people like myself skipped that camera entirely.

How are you coping against the reported overheating issues? Also, how are you finding editing the 4k IPB files? Reports have shown it's super hard to playback those files in Premiere.
Hey Matt I was in Canon Europe livestream q/a session they mentioned that based on user feedback they will add all-i in r6 future firmware update so everyone ask Canon to give All-i in eos r6. R6 will be perfect for hybrid shooters if it doesn't overheat and if All-i is added in firmware update.

I love your videos. I have the EOS R and I sold my Panasonic GH5 and boy do I miss that 4K 60. But I sure don’t miss that terrible auto focus. You’re right finally the camera everyone’s been waiting for. Cannons dual pixel auto focus with 4K 60/10 bit (no need for Atmos recorder) everything‘s internal. I’ll be waiting for your review before I make my purchase.
well , just remeber , from 2008-9 so a decade ago , the camera market fell 80%!! i read a lot of this rumor , ALL-I is coming to R6 , i hope in every mode and we don't have any surprise ( like only for 1080p)
I mean the first impression is WOAH!! But then you look at bit rates.... 422 10bit is great, if you have a high enough bit rate.
4K 120fps and ALL-i codec plus no record time limit on the R6, and you have literally the perfect camera for videographers.
The "perfect" camera for videographers would, I would think, be a video camera not a hybrid. However, this would make a great "B" camera for a videographer and A camera for a still shooter who only occasionally plays with video.
The R6 seems like a better fit for me I like the two SD slots but REALLY wanted the 4K 120fps... but I’ve heard the R6 is better in low light 🤷🏼♂️

I believe it’s only 20
ProRes RAW 5.5k for the R6 from Atomos and future updates to the bitrates and WDR mode. Then it's a no brainer but lets hope Atomos can get them to approve it. Like the Nikon Z6.
I'm going to wait for the real-world reviews, but am leaning towards the r6. I record a lot of footage for my videos and can't see needing or wanting to use the r5's full capability. Thanks for the great video Matt!
Love the sense of humour Matt. I agree, the R6 is great, but I can't do it without All-I. Why can't they let us choose the compression we want. An otherwise stunning camera has me looking to the R5 #$%@%
Yesssss! You're really speaking from my soul. Three simple things, and no one got it, I was guessing we were dealing with their fear of "cannibalising" their five-figure cinema models. But then again there are plenty of more specific features that production companies would be willing to pay for, like built in ND filters, SDI outputs, etc.
And yes: What's wrong with Canon: From being the first to implement HD video in their DSLRs to being the last to implement 4K after every other smartphone had it (I know, not a good comparison), to...this. This company is so weirdly inconsistent. Which is honestly why I don't really want to go back to using Canon cameras. Who knows, when the next big thing comes around that would add great value or efficiency to my work, I don't want to wait another million years for Canon to implement it. Like with the "land of IBIS". It only took them FIVE years. That's a looong time for someone following the market developments closely.
Wedding cinematography is tough in terms of long shots, and one take, no do-vers. For most staged filmmaking the overheating and recording limit and file sizes are easy to look past. For a five-minute music video I might produce one or two hours of footage. For one wedding you might easily get up to ten, I guess?
But it should be considered that the recording time limit is not an arbitrary decision - as far as I know, it is needed to market these cameras as photo cameras which makes a difference on taxation or toll, I believe.
What will be the benefits of me leaving the 90D? First off regular editors like myself barely can edit 4k. Second the 90D has great 4k and 120fps and I do not have to worry about over heating. Only when it's in cropped 4k mode but who wants cropped? Maybe the R6 but for almost 2500 dollars with 20Mp????, I rather keep my 90D with 32MP.

According to a Canon Rep on the ProAV QA the R6 does overheat at every 4K mode, because it’s always oversampling it’s 5.5k sensor. However the R5 if you film in non-oversampled 4K, doesn’t apparently overheat

Love they are putting that sensor in the R6. Hopefully that extended dynamic range will actually be usable without it overheating.
That record limit is a bummer but I'm happy Canon FINALLY got off their high horse and listened. 2020 it's full of twists.
The R6 seems like my GH5 but on full frame crack! I likey but will have to see if its worth the switch. IF i would choose between the R5 and the S1H then i think the S1H seems more robust and usable even if a bit more expensive
I wouldn't use a S1H if the paid me. Autofocus is horrendous. And I need AF because I do sports.

Part of me feels like they need to slow down and perfect 4k at the moment...this level of video in that tiny camera just isn't feasible yet without overheating issues and sacrificing quality for the already massive file sizes. Both cameras sound incredible but I'm curious to see how they truly perform.
Dynamic range ... dynamic range ... dynamic range ... it’s capped at 12 stop on the R5 & R6. For me that’s way more important than « 8K » ...
You can get 15 stop using the slog 3 ... yes it’s 8 bit on current sony mirrorles cameras. But if you know what you’re doing .. awesome results.
If the A7s iii will have 4k60 full frame 10bit 422 keeping the slog 3 ... taht will be the camera to get.
The lack of ALL-I and RAW really makes me question getting one. Definitely need to see how it grades and looks before deciding
This is my thought exactly, it seems like canon deliberately nerfed the quality by removing all-i since it has the digic x processer, I'm wondering if they might add this with firmware after they've got all the R5 orders in. Looking at it on paper right now in my country the R6 is over 3k dollars with tax compared to the the a73 which is 2k. I could use the extra money to get some decent lenses. Tough choices!

I have an R5 preordered but have been having the same thoughts as you, the extra features the R5 has seem to have catches like limited recording time because of overheating and really high costs of storage media. I really wish one of them had 4K raw but 10-bit 422 is still a big step up.
You will have a fine camera! R5 is the way to go.
Even if you don’t use it for shooting 4K or 8K video, the R5 should still be an awesome camera for wedding, events, sports and birders. Shooting stills at 12/20 FPS with a buffer of over a hundred shots pretty much guarantees you don’t miss the shot and shooting them at 45mp gives you all the latitude to crop. And if that’s still not good enough for you, then you can shoot video bursts at 8K and grab 16mp files from those. It may not have the bullet stopping build of the 1DX series but it should be plenty tough enough to serve as a weapon for any photojournalist working in a war zone or BLM demonstration. So don’t wait to pre-order because if you do, then you’ll have to wait much longer for the stores to restock because the first batch is sure to run out.

That 29+ minute recording limit is a tax issue in the EU. All similar cameras have the same limit. At that resolution and FPS, it’s a professional still camera. At a longer recording time at that resolution and FPS, it’s a higher taxed professional video camera. It’s nuts, but that’s what it is.
Already preordered the R6, and just purchased a Ninja V. The fact I'm getting FF 4k60 10-bit 422 internal, with best in class AF & IBIS, with a flip screen, USB-C powering, and C-log....all under $3000?! I'M SO PUMPED!

Am I right in thinking it doesn’t allow dual video recording? That would be such a bummer for what otherwise looks a really tempting camera.
The best of my knowledge, you are correct, no dual video recording. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t overheat like the R5.
R. Powell I think the “no overheating” would be because it doesn’t record in 8K or 4K at 120fps. From a videographers perspective, not being able to record to both cards simultaneously really does render the dual card slots a bit useless. That’s disappointing as it looks like it’ll be such a great camera - but I wouldn’t want to risk filming a wedding on one card.

Matt WhoisMatt Johnson that’s a real shame, so much going for this camera, seems a small thing to have omitted that would have been of great importance to lots of potential customers.
If you are a serious video shooter, you still need a external recorder. You don't need worry about over heating issue.
I would pick fuji xt4 instead of R6

I spoke with a manager at Canon today. He said company will add all-i in the very first update. I was looking to buy Canon 1dx Mkii for documentary filmmaking. But now I am going for R6.

@@DenisasPupkevicius utimately the video gets cropped in R6, so it's better to shoot in crop sensor cameras than a fx camera which ultimately gets cropped 😝, and neither is Sony A6000 series cameras or the Panasonic Gh series.. still Fuji is a better option if you compare the prices. And image quality is all that matters.
What about the overheating issues Canon describes? 10 minute 4k 60p before it overheats? I want to see some real-world tests before I spend my $$

Excited for both, R6 is definitely more in my range though, I do not need 8K, 4K already fills me with too many hard drives! And, I am concerned about the overheating. Also, the 29min limit is annoying still (That's supposed to keep the price low, so it can't be called a Video Recorder ala a Cinema Camera which incur customs duty imported into Europw - That said, how is the GH5 therefore affordable!?) I have the GH5 so I'll probably keep that for such long record occasions and then R6 the rest of my life in beautiful Canon style!
The ability to record on CFexpress alone, should lean you towards R5. R6 is a watered down R5. Spend the extra money.
You answered your own question in a way with S1H...with a fan it couldn’t commit to 4k60 no crop, thus the reported overheating in the R6. Maybe the a7siii will solve that?

The R6 just might tempt me to make a switch back to Canon for DSLR film making. Will it finally make me want to switch out the GH5? Guess we gotta see the reviews first when it comes out.
Ifffffff we got ALL-I, if we dont get overheating in 4k ... yeah. Ive pro ordered, but damn lets hope for the best. Thinking of canceling and getting the R5.

Sweet camera, but the record time limit is a bummer. I'm not sure if that could be removed in a firmware update later.
A tiny HDMI is also not a good thing for those who want to record externally to get around the record time limit.
One interesting thing I found today is R5 shutter rated to 500,000 (same as 1dxiii), R6 is 300,000 (still double 5d4 at 150,000!)
I wish R6 had more mpx, but for the sake of low light it doesn't. Coz I already have 24 on my 80D. Don't feel like downscaling. R5 has too many advanced features I don't feel like paying for. Since I just can't 8K and don't care for 4K 120p. There was a rumor about some 70-80mpx camera. Maybe that's the one. If not, 5DSr it is.

5472 / 3840 * 3 / 4 = 1.06875. It creates three pixels out of four on 4K - or 9 out of 16. They could have gotten rid of the crop by making it 17.5 megapixels but apparently it would have been too little for photographers.
Great, now we need a cheaper aps-c mirrorless from canon that has IBIS, 4k 30fps, Full HD 120fps, fully articulated screen, and that bigger LP-E6 battery. Yes I'm asking for a mirrorless 90d with IBIS, is that so hard to make Canon?
I don’t understand why people want 4K and 8k so badly, your phones have them, your dslr have them. I 100% prefer HD as good as Arri Alexa any-day over 4K. Cannon keep the 4K, keep the 8k just give me amazing HD over capable or good 8k and I’ll be satisfied.

I want the R5 but it just doesnt make sense for me. Don't need 8k or 4k/120 and worry that my current computer/storage infrastructure can even handle processing the R5 files. Gonna go with the R6 and record at 4K/60 with Ninja V Atomos combo and be more than happy 😀

Blah R5 is the way to go, if you using it for photography then definitely the R5, that 20mp sensor ugh, that might fly for weddings but not landscapes.
For casual shooters, this camera does not let you do shutter priority videos outdoors, which is a real shame. Even the much cheaper EOS R lets you do that.
Canon have said the the R6 will overheat at 4k/30 after 40 minutes while using oversampling. Looks like you need to use pixel binning to get longer run times 😔
