  • Canon R5, R6, R | Best RF Lenses to buy first! | Buying Guide
    BEST PRICES TO MY FAVORITE CANON GEAR BELOW👇
    So you you put your order in for your Canon EOS R5, Canon R6 or EOS R and are wondering which glass to pick first. In this video I’ll help you with that task as I own several and been shooting with all of them.
    So what are the best lenses for your Canon R5, R6 or EOS R? When the answer may be more complicated than it seems as Canon has put out a very important line up of RF lenses with many others to come.
    In this video we are going to be talking about the following lenses for your Canon R5, Canon R6 or Canon EOS R:
    The Canon RF 35mm f1.8, the Canon RF 50mm f1.2, the Canon RF 85mm f1.2, the Canon RF 15-35mm f2.8, the Canon 24-70 f2.8 RF, and the 70-200mm f2.8 Canon RF.
    These are the lenses that conform my mini arsenal of RF glass and in this video I’ll be sharing the reasons why I chose each lens.
    When buying RF lenses for your R5, R6 or EOS R, there are a few main thing to keep in mind.
    The first one: What is the RF Lens going to be used for? Video? Photography or both?
    The second question would be: Do you want image stabilization in the lens
    And third: Budget.
    Any of these lenses will perform great for stills and video. Now I have not tried any of these glass for 8k video on a Canon R5 for example because I haven’t got the order in at the moment of this video being published. However I am planing to do a follow up review putting all these lenses through their paces on both photography and video. Particularly with my Canon R5 4k 60, 4K 120 FPS, and 8K Raw 12 bit. That would be most likely a series.
    Now I have not included images in this particular video as I have episodes dedicated for each particular lens when I’ll get in depth with everything you need to know.
    Should you want to checkout any of these lenses, I listed them all below for your conveniency. If you decide to buy any of them it won’t cost you any extra and help me support these types of videos.
    For comments and questions make sure to drop them in the comment box and as always thank you for stopping by.
    Gaston Shutters.

    Great coverage. I did pick up the 35mm for my R6 but sticking with my Canon EF lenses as you can almost double those prices in Australia. Just waiting for the adapter - sneaky trick by Canon as camera without a lens is useless. Probably hoping everyone would buy at least one RF lens.

    Gaston thanks for the info about the lenses but one thing that I always need to know as a hybrid shooter is just how much lenses focus breath. Most reviews that mention it that I have seen on almost all the RF glass show quite bad focus breathing that is unfortunate as these lenses for stills are excellent! 🙏🏾

    Yes! Thank you for doing lens videos! I know I will get the R6 but I am really struggling on what lens or lenses I will treat myself with without going way over budget. I have the EF 24-105 1:4 L IS USM that I paired with a rented EOS R this weekend for a wedding. I was so disappointed in the AF to the point where I worry if something is wrong with my lens. I'm not sure if I should get the RF version, or a different RF lense. Or use my EF mount for awhile to see what Canon will be putting out in the next couple years. I would like to have wide available if needed, but also really want a zoom lense. Decisions decisions.

    • @GastonShutters
      @GastonShutters  4 года назад +1

      Hey man. Thank you for your comment. The 24-105 is fast at focusing. The EF version is fast from I used to own it so maybe something with your focusing setting or lens itself. I’ll be dropping son in-depth lens reviews for each lens I mentioned here.

      Generally, to be all round you need three focal lengths. 15-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm. Th is covers most of your needs regardless of what you do. Generally you also need a prime lens, like 50mm but 85mm is often best.
      I can see why he previewed all of them. You could get 24-70mm or 28-70mm or 24-105mm and they all cover the same focal range but the price difference is huge.
      Your budget determines a lot

    I preordered the R6 and I think I’m just going to get the RF 28-70 f2. I shoot on a super old T3i with only 28mm and 50mm primes - which are around 50mm and 84mm when multiplied by the crop factor. I film my woodworking and also take my finished furniture photos all with those primes, so an R6 with an incredible RF lens will be a wonderful upgrade. Down the line I think I also want the 85mm 😬

    Man I cannot believe you did not mention the ultimate lens for the RF system... the 28-70 F2... Hands down the absolute best lens I have ever used. It is heavy as hell and expensive AF. But it is the most versatile lens I have ever used. The quality is insane and it is like having 3 primes in one. I highly recommend that you try it !

    • @GastonShutters
      @GastonShutters  4 года назад +4

      Hey man. I rented it and loved it. But like you say it’s a very particular lens, heavy, expensive. I prefer the 24-70 f2.8 more manageable also sharp as hell, lighter and easy to carry around when choosing only one lens.

    • @locsbcn
      @locsbcn 2 года назад +4

      Versatile? Don t agree… in vidéo not so good… af braithing…heavy no IS, no 24mm. Only one more stop aperture. Not a good deal and the difference in sharpness with the 2470 is very weak.

    • @bodinian
      @bodinian Год назад

      I'll also add that for video the 28-70mm f/2 lens has louder autofocus than the 24-70 f/2.8 lens.
      The 28-70mm is great at photographs, but I wouldn't call it the most versatile in this mixed media environment.

    The new teleconverters won’t work with the 70-200. The rear glass of that lens, and most RF lenses, is too close to the mount. The new teleconverters only work with the new F/11 primes and the new 100-500. This is official, per Canon.

    • @GastonShutters

    Thanks for the review, I purchased the 70-200 RF because of this review (in part); i love it, thanks. However, note that the teleconverters do not work with that lens as you noted in 13:35. I accidentally purchased the 2x and the extended component does not fit, even if you lock out at full zoom 200m. You may want to revise that portion of the video with a correction. But still great video, thanks for taking the time.

I have the 35mm f1.2, 24-105mm f4, 70-200mm f2.8 and the 2x teleconverter on order.....THEN I read that the extender won't work with any of these lenses so I ordered the 100-500mm that I was planning on getting eventually anyways to save me the hassle of sending back a teleconverter....crazy!. Glad to see I'm not the only one who fell for Canon making the 70-200mm incompatible with the teleconverter! Oh well, I think I will manage to forgive them.

      I grabbed the RF 28-70 f/2 while Canon had the refurbished units on sale. It was priced less than the 24-70 f/2.8 new by $200. Still get the 1 year Canon warranty. Other than the weight it was a no-brainer. From all I have seen and heard it is one of Canon's best ever lenses. And paired with the R5 or R6, it is one of the lenses rated for 8 stops of stabilization even though the lens itself doesn't have IS.

Than it would be better to choose R5 with his 45 Mpx. Of course I will not print big pictures but I thought that maybe after zooming in you will still have much more detail as while using R6?

    How good is the the low light performance and DOF on the f/4 of the 24-105? I’m trying to figure out the best 1-2 lenses to purchase for a portable travel kit (preordered R5’s) for landscapes, night time city, lifestyle portraits, night skies, and general travel. Wondering if I should get a 24-105 + 50, 24-105 + 35, 24-105 + 15-35, or if I could just survive with a 24-70 on it’s own. Will the f/2.8 be good enough for low light, night time, and interiors? I shoot hybrid, both photos and videos, with photos taking slight priority.

    • @GastonShutters

      Welcome to the channel Will.
      Tough call here. I would get he 24-105 f4 for travel and everything else if your budget is around 1k. No if you can spend a bit more I’ll go for the 24-70 f2 and get the 35 f1.8 and 50 mm f1.8 when it comes out. You could easily survive on one lens. If you don’t need super wife or super telephoto capabilities. The 13-35mm f2.8 is crear for cityscape architectural... very tough to decisions but that would be my recommendation.

    • @dahebable
      @dahebable 4 года назад +2

      I use the RF 24-105 f4 for travel, with my EOS RP. I find the low light performance and DOF very satisfactory. I find that I use the zoom range 70-105 a lot. The RF 24-70 f2.8 lacks this very useful part of the range, so for travel I would not buy the RF 24-70 f2.8. I usually have to save weight when I travel, so I go with just the RF 24-105 f4. I love image quality from this lens. If I could bring one more lens, it would be the RF 50 f1.2 or the RF 70-200 f2.8. But almost every time I pack my travel bag, I leave my 50 and 70-200 at home, to save weight, and to avoid changing lenses.

    • @HenrikNordberg

      If I could bring only one lens it would be the 24-70/2.8 for its versatility. 2 lenses? 15-35/2.8 and the 50/1.2. And 3 lenses? add the 70-200/2.8. I traveled to Europe last summer with the R and I had the RF 30, EF 50/1.2, EF 16-35/2.8, EF 100-400. I used all of them and wished I had also brought the 11-24/4 L.

      Faster aperture in the prime. Blurrier background. Better for video in certain situations. But if shallowest depth of field is not an issue go with the Zoom f2.8

    hi just cany understand why do you need 24-70 if you have alredy 15-35 and 50 and 85 i think you are ok and you could really skip it and save some money a spacialy if you also have 70-200

      A lot of the times I carry just one lens. Also when shooting portraits at the studio I zoom in and out to get full body, half body, headshots in a split of a second. Something you can do when switching glass

      Gaston Shutters yes I totally agree but if you looking for reduce costs for the lenses and you want to have good glass I think it is worth to consider skipping 24:70 and go for 50 instead at the beginning and later if you get some money back think about 24:70 I think I’ll do like that I’ll go for 15:35mm 50 f1.2, 70:200, 100:500 I’m thinking about 85 macro also I have EF 85 f1.4 IS the best lens of all time ever made in all EF line 😍
