      I can't find anything wrong with the design of the camera. I'm not referring to performance.

    • @TomHofmann

      Do a search for "Canon R 5 leaked manual overheating" on Google. It seems when you shoot 8K, 4K 60 and 4K 120 the camera heats up quickly. Once it reaches a certain temperature it will shut down to prevent damage to the camera. Under ideal conditions (23 degrees C) this is around 20 to 30 minutes. If the exterior temperature is higher then 23 degrees C the recording time will obviously be shorter.
      This only applies to the R 5. The R 6 doesn't seem to have this baked into firmware.

    Someone who actually can talk to a real canon rep or engineer should tell them that the control ring would have like a million times more use if you could use it to do micro manual focus adjustments that automatically engage peaking and zoom the liveview in while you're turning the ring.

    Rolling shutter is inevitable at this price point. These cameras are basically mass market (relatively) cheap. My issue (and I'm sorry to obsess about this)is over-heating.
    Reminds me of the new land-rover defender. Brilliant 4X4, but it has air suspension. Meaning: when the air suspension fails (and all things fail) the car fails 100%.

    TY for the ibis tests, you seem to be one of the first to do one this in depth. Did you get a chance to test the rolling shutter at all?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  4 года назад +3

      Hi Jake, it was on my mind to do, but had to be dropped because of time. Thanks for the great comment though. IBIS is never a complete saviour - there is almost always some herky-jerkiness to it; but considering that every shot of this camera (except when we tell you it's a gimbal) was hand held - I'd say that the IBIS is pretty amazing and does a lot to hedge against a lot of the rolling shutter.

    Soooo.... you didn’t test the one feature that this whole camera is hyped around? Because... it overheated? Seriously, that’s not the FIRST thing you’d have tested? I’m just going to assume Canon had a clause in its contract about not sharing the results of 8K tests before launch and save you the trouble of claiming that you tried to test the most hyped feature last... like a true professional? Not trying to be cruel, but come on. The only other rational explanation is that you knew that it’d brick the camera, wasting what limited time you had with it. And let’s not “pre-production firmware” too hard, firmware can’t vent heat out of a sealed camera body.

    • @miyahtallulah
      @miyahtallulah 4 года назад

      Suspect the R5 is a great B roll camera. Great for image/creative, not so great for long duration interviews etc. Most image shots are no longer than 10 seconds. Who seriously needs to shoot 20 mins@120FPS 4k? The truth is no camera at this price point is going to give you everything. If you want something for documentary/weddings, buy something else! Otherwise, 8K nonsense (and low light performance?) aside, for image and beauty, the R5 is probably AMAZING

  • @ClintNicholas
    @ClintNicholas 4 года назад

    Facts to consider before we lose our minds:
    1) How long are you guys really planning to record 8k ...keeping in mind...
    1tb CFexpress = 789.00 = 51 minutes of footage
    512 CF express = 500.00 = approx 20 minutes
    256 CF express = 319.99 = approx 10 minutes
    Say that to say ... cards aren’t cheap...the average consumer will most likely run out of storage before the camera overheats in 8k
    2) 4K 120 overheats .... are we shooting interviews in 4K 120? I figured that extra slow motion would be used a few seconds at a time. No?
    3) 4K overheating in general...correct me if I’m wrong...the camera has two 4K modes..one downsamples from the 8k and a “normal” 4K mode...my understanding is the normal 4K modes don’t have the overheating problems.
    3) These are all preproduction units...can we at least let the final version get out there?
    4) Keep in mind that the EOS R was supposedly dead on arrival by many youtubers...a few firmware updates later...same youtubers posting “switching to EOS R” videos.
    5 all this talk about overheating is good and bad. Good to an extent because Canon must have seen the reaction by now and are hopefully putting things in place(where possible). Bad cause every review after July 30th will be a glorified “will it overheat” test. 😔
    6 Innovation usually comes at a price. Canon seems to be in a bad position. They relax for a few years...people are mad canon isn’t doing anything. They push the boundaries of what’s possible in a form factor and people are still mad. Catch 22?

    • @TomHofmann
      @TomHofmann 4 года назад

      I'd agree. The 8K feature is a headline number. You'll probably get a few film shoots using them as a B-roll camera that might get destroyed. Cheaper then putting a Red in that place.
      Interestingly I have seen a couple of German review sites that suggest when you look at real world shooting the R6 actually makes a lot more sense.

    • @hexotech5202
      @hexotech5202 4 года назад

      1 - aboustley correct people shop invest in a NAD, NVME storage for editing that 8K if they want to grade it and edit with multi track as well, New GPU + possibly faster laptops
      2 - not everyone shoot interview, some shoot weddings, live events where they benefit from the high frame rates and you have sports and other sectors and this is not just for a few seconds but minutes.
      3 - 4K shouldn't overheat in general that is a fundamental problem this is not 2016 when we had camera like A7s II.
      4 - Well i agree but taking a youtubes opinion is stupid most times a lot of them are not better than you are. and some don't know what they are talking about so that to be expected. firmware can't fix a design or engineering flaw.
      5 firmware can fix some issues but not engineering flawless like the overheating and i know canon said this is pre production unit. I will like to educate does that think that the final unit will be different, the answer is simply nope.
      - reason is for each product in a company design cycle development stage is the longest in design and manufacturing, it goes in this order usually.
      Brief > case study > research > Design process - this take time if it a new product that is completely difference from your existing line ( in this case there is already such a line the EOs ) > DEVELOPMENT STAGE > refining the design > testing and prototype ( this stage will be monthsss before the launch) and you go on a cycle between development, testing and prototyping.
      So if canon was to have sorted the heating solution it would have been done in advance during the testing when they had some pre production unit giving to selected people for reworld testing and they would have worked on the feedback and this is under an extreme tight NDA. the pre production unit youtubers get are the final refined version before launch. a company will only fix major sever flaw that will cause them things like a lawsuit, loss in negative profit because people will not buy. the fact that the heating is know by canon should tell you that sorry that is pretty much it. why spend hundreds of thousands in engineering, testing and changing the production line just because of a heat issue that people can deal and bare with.
      6 - people will always complain no matter the innovation, but canon can only blame themselves for this because they allowed there competition to explore mirrorless world well ahead of them and failed to get the user experience that would have kept them in front. canon should have release the first Eos R after the A7sI, just for them to gain the understanding ahead of sony and panasonic.
      Also people fail to forget that canon is well aware that they know thermal design constraint will be a big issue, take the 1DX II for example that did 4K 60p and it gets very warm. so why did it take the Eos R5 to remind them again.
      Overall the Eos R5 regardless is a brillant camera it will work great for does who know how to make advantage of the situation and the tool they have. I have a A7RIV + A7RIII + 2x A6500 am look for a camera to replace my A6500 for video work. must have 4K 120 that is my requirement and 4K raw or 10bit minimum 6K ideally the S1H would have been perfect but it lacks goo autofocus if not for that i believe that is the true winning camera that and the BMPCC 6K fall into the same situation. for me

    Hello, you showed a photo with comparison between different sensors. Is it true, that using Canon R6 with his 20 Mpx sensor will restrict the high resolution of RF lenses? I read that they are capable of even 100 Mpx. Than it would be better to choose R5 with his 45 Mpx. Of course I will not print big pictures but I thought that maybe after zooming in you will still have much more detail as while using R6?

    Appreciated the presentation of how the camera handles high speed action shots for stills. In the past, for the R, many reviewers mentioned that while the camera LOOKED like it was tracking focus, the shots themselves were often NOT actually in focus. Can you comment on whether the still images you saw in post actually focused sharply as they appeared to in the video?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  4 года назад +1

      I think most were acceptably in focus. In many shots I had the shutter speed too low, so Nick's movement was a bit blurred, but you can see from his surroundings within the focal range (so below him, like a railing) it's tack sharp. Which means, it hit him with 90% or greater accuracy. This can probably be improved by isolating a zone. My experience was sometimes it wanted to hit things that weren't near him - especially moments before he became a major subject in the frame.

    • @jaxphotobuff9252
      @jaxphotobuff9252 4 года назад

      Thanks for the response! Did you select the initial auto-focus point manually? If not, how does the camera make the selection of the initial focus point for a burst of images? I ask because on my 1DX Mark 1, I always felt like I had to select the auto-focus point manually for the first image and then either follow with that focus point or allow the camera to take over from there (if there was only one subject). But otherwise the “miss rate” on the initial frame was pretty high.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  4 года назад +1

      I probably should have done a zone system. But I just left it fully wide with Face tracking. Just to see what it would do. It's often that the marketing buzz is around the full frame of AF points (as is with these cameras). So, why not put it to the test? But honestly, in a real professional setting I would use the zone system at the very least.

If the R5 overheats and the stills resolution is compromised (by a filter - which it has) then surely its better to buy 2 bodies: a video specific and stills specific. I've delayed buying due to the R5. But if it overheats, that's a real world pain for professionals (Sony!) Honestly, I would rather have less power and more reliability for video. More (uncompromised) resolution for stills.

    Do we really need bigger/better to this extent? Of course Canon wants to convince us purchasing yet another new camera with more processing power than the PC taking humanity to the moon in the 1960s... AND it cost as much as a second-hand car!!!! I admit that the "true silent mode" is very useful during weddings, nature shots etc, but is it worth the money for a semi-pro?
    In the old days (pre-digital) photographers used what today is sneered at, a mechanical metal box with a piece of glass in front + 36 negatives and no "auto" anything what so ever... still they produced fantastic images that still stands the test of time.
    OK, if I had a million on the bank I might buy one of these R5/R6 toys... but as long as I live in the real world I will keep to the great second-hand gear that flooding the markets.... most of this type of gear cover 98% of what us semi-pro and/or amateurs need. If I ever need an R5/R6 these for a job which I doubt... then I will not buy one, I just rent it for a day.

    Do either the R5 or R6 do timelapse photography with the option for a timelapse video to be created in-camera like the Panasonic GH5 does?
    Do they offer the following GH5 features:

      Video? IDK... didn't really keep track of time that way. I think I started shooting with the camera (photos) around 7:30am-ish, and video likely started around 8:20-ish. Warning maybe started happening around 9:30. So that's 2 hours of solid use in direct sunlight, shooting 4K HQ, HFR, HDR. The camera wasn't physically rolling that entire time. There was a lot of just figuring out what to shoot, shooting stand ups to camera (many of which didn't make it into the final cut), and just the camera on standby and I muck through the menu & settings etc. So it was "on" for a good portion of time, even if it wasn't actually recording much.

    Good video. The point of the flip screen though is so you don't have to get on the ground anymore. Sore Canon shooter's necks rejoice.

    What is the battery life on each in video mode ?

    If you are not into video then there is not so much the R5 is actually offering more compared to their competition. Way too much hyped. The CMOS sensor is of old technology, not even stacked type. That’s why you see the rolling shutter being quite ugly on the R5. That’s not good at all, the Sony A9 II beats the crap out of the R5 on this point. Also the battery lifetime sucks in the R5, the A7r4 is where? 800 images typically whereas the R5 is at about 400. Only the memory interface is cool. One thing to add for video: the R5 suffers terrible from overheating, what a bummer!!! That’s not useable, that’s a toy function.

      Whatever it was on standard wise seemed a bit dark in the full sun, but I never went into settings to crank it up. I'm sure it's decent if you turn it up. It was good enough for what I was doing at the speed in which I was doing it.

    I think Canon made a blunder marketing their mirrorless cameras as video beasts (particularly because they dont have a diverse set of models for different uses, like sony does)......I see their mirrorless cameras as far more impressive for photography, good for video. Maybe I'm being a negative nelly, but my gut tells me their marketing team shit the bed on this one. I think most people were using the EOS R for photography and a secondary video camera to begin with, they should have just continued with that marketing direction, and would have attracted a lot more photographers. This wouldnt hurt them as everyone knows canon has beasty cinema cameras that are cream of the crop in the video industry. The only real attraction to these new R series cameras for video is the autofocus system.
    Also, if their intention was to release a mirrorless video camera that was a game changer, they should have gone way more conservative with the specs and built something high quality and functional. Its a joke that top camera companies are still releasing cameras that overheat.

      Good question. I don't have an answer for that yet. We'll need to get the cameras back and do some controlled tests. I'm sure it was operator error. Need to examine further.
