: Would you recommend s24 ultra, as the best camera mobile phone, on android? Considering overalls like macro, simple portraits, astro, vediography etc etc.... I wanna buy a mobile phone, just for the camera....
I'm a horrible person to answer that. I 've only really ever used Samsung phones for the last decade or more. I'm not a phone camera review or tech review channel. I'm just a photographer who likes to mess around with the phone I happen to own, so I have no idea how the Samsung phones compare to others, unfortunately. The only thing I can definitively say is that as a photographer, I personally would never buy a phone just for it's camera, but I realize that's due to the fact that I use dedicated cameras for my photography. I use Samsung phones because I like their phone features and their multi-device ecosystems, not because of their camera features. That's just me though.
@@BrentHall : So far I've watched a lott of tech channels, who are not phorographers, say, s24 is the king. Ofcourse in software n stuffs, it might be.... But I'm not interested in them at all... I just wanted the perspective from a photographer... I loved your astro vedio using the s24...which is why i had to know your point of view. 😀
I've noticed a degrading in the Astrophotography Mode for quite sometime. When I showed examples on some Facebook groups, I was ridiculed and even abused lol. Now it's a known issue. Keep waiting for it to improve, but I'm guessing that ship has sailed. Oh well. Thanks for the comparison video. I've resorted back to Expert RAW 30 seconds manual mode. I might try Pro mode on my next opportunity.
Oh, that's the Heipi tripod. I don't normally have this one in my phone videos because most phone photographers think it's a bit overkill, but I like it a lot for all kinds of stuff. I made a video about it too, but it's this one: heipivision.com/products/heipi-3-in-1-travel-tripod?sca_ref=4619310.99uWoz6ilv I used it for this one because I actually forgot all my phone mounts, and luckily this tripod has one built in to the actual head, so it saved me, lol.
Thanks for letting me know. I usually have my big camera and big tripod but since having the S24 Ultra I want to try more phone photography because it's just that good now. So that tripod looks very promising. Will check out your video first tho haha@@BrentHall
So I did the astro mode on my s23 ultra and I just got a completely blue picture, I'm trying to figure out why this is happening, the hyperlaps works great it's just the photo on astro mode that I think sucks on my phone, and tips on how I can fix that?
I wanted to thank you for introducing us to all the modes as you know, I have been following you since 21u on this subject Basically I would say the 4min astro mode is more than sufficient And unfortunately yes, RAW is dead Otherwise, I saw that you were in 24Mpix in Expert Raw Do you find the output better than 12 or 50Mpix? Otherwise in companion, what options did you put for: Adaptive Pixel high-end digital zoom softening photos thanks for sharing I'm waiting to see the other video of course!
Normally that's a good rule of thumb, but unfortunately with astrophotography it's not possible. If you lower the iso for astro, then you won't have enough light to get a properly exposed image, and having a properly exposed image at high iso is always better than having an underexposed image with lower iso, for any scenario, not just astro.
No, it's not tracking, just stacking. Each shot is like 15 sec, then it takes about 15-20 of those and then aligns and stacks them, then crops and processes the final image to a jpeg all in the phone.
No tracker. It's stacking multiple shorter exposures. I'm pretty sure I talked about it a bit in the editing part of the video, but I split that and made a separate video about the whole editing process. It ended up talking like 7 shots at ~19 sec and stacked them in the phone during the 4 min.
Since raw from pro mode and expert raw is not a true raw i will say jpg. In my experience this phone does not suits for raw shooter and that is a shame. Samsung is ruining a great hardware with very bad software decisions.
It's time for me to upgrade my phones, My Note 10 PLus has seen better days, lol. Great video! It's a shame we can't get raw files from this though.. so much potential. You mentioned that you don't like the wide field camera.. is that the 200MP one? I will check out your processing video now.
First off. Great video. New subscriber here. I got my s24 Ultra last week. Switched from a pixel 6pro. I definitely see how the images you took of Orion in astro mode looked crappie. I've seen it on mine of the milkyway. Came out with a purple color on it. Couldn't get anything out of it. And like you. I'm an Astro, photographer. Anyway, I was looking in the camera setting menu and found something called Intelligent optimization. There are 3 settings you can choose from. Max, Minimal, or none. I switched it to none. Have to try it out and see if it changes anything. Just thought it might be useful. Update is supposed to come out tomorrow 2/22. Hopefully it will fix things. I love being able to use my phone when I'm out imagining with my scope. Clear skies!!!!!
Hey thanks for the sub, I appreciate it! Yeah, you can turn those settings off and it might help with the jpeg processing, but that's all it's for; it won't help with the raw images.
Brand new to the astro on a Samsung; I have been using a Pixel for this and it always did an amazing job. I haven't really done much testing in a proper environment but how is Sammie handling this? Do they stack like Google Pixel or is this doing something else? On the pixel, I could set it up, walk away for several minutes and the only editing that was needed was lowering the dark levels. Booked every weekend for camping so hope to get some practice in soon!
The night mode and the astro mode in expert raw are both definitely stacking in the phone. If you want best results with minimal editing, those two options are going to be your jam, with emphasis on the astro mode in expert raw, having up to a 10 min exposure time, though the colors in mode come out weird so you'll probably have to do some minimal editing even if it's on your phone, just to get the colors right.
I had my first cloudless night since getting my s24 (not the ultra. Wanted to go down in size after my s21u) Just doing a 30 second exposure in expert raw turned out fine. Astrophotography mode 4min? Barely anything. I'll have to go out of town on the weekend and try it somewhere other than my backyard
Usually, but you can't do that in astrophotography, there just isn't enough light to collect, especially with phones since you can't do more than a 30 sec exposure. If you're going to do astro, with any camera, then you'll be shooting with very high isos. Space is a dark place, lol. The way we (astrophotographers) get around this is to take many images and stack them to reduce noise. I have a whole astrophotography playlist if you're ever interested.
@@BrentHallNever dared to up the ISO as much as you did and was amazed to see myself in pitch black using the pro mode but that was back when got my first S6 Edge , loved it ever since , and now they allow even 30 seconds shutter speed ? That should make it even brighter.
Good video. Always like your videos. Very informative and interesting. Was all set to replace my S22 Ultra with the S24 Ultra but having watched many RUclips reviews I felt the device was very disappointing. Decided to import an Oppo Find X7 Ultra.
The only way you can natively create a flat profile is by switching down to FHD, and even then creating a flat profile isn't going to work like shooting in a log profile. I think there might be some apps out there, like filmic pro, that allow for flat or log profiles, but I don't think it plays with android or samsung phones very well. Never tried it though. If you're wanting better video, but something smaller and inexpensive, you could look into something like the new osmo pocket 3. It has a better sensor, and shoots in log, and is just way better for video overall while still being super compact and much more ergonomic than a phone.
Informative video. I watch most of yours. The DNG issue seems to be the same with my S23 Ultra. Lightroom's Denoise feature doesn't work with the phone's DNGs.
Astro mode is a stacking mode, but it is better to do it with external stacking software and use a time shift gimbal for the Earth's rotation. I find it much better and have very good results. If you only have a static tripod, you can also calculate the earth's rotation with the stacking software

Phone photography has also become a new hobby. I cannot wait to try the astro stuff out myself. Loved this video and look forward to the next one. Take care.
So I did astrophotography with the s22 and got some phenomenal pictures. I've been messing around with the s24 and I feel like I can't get the same pictures it's disappointing in a huge way because I love astrophotography. I'm really glad I'm not the only one who thinks this or sees it. Totally going to watch your second video though on the editing part. Thanks for making this one
I wonder if the alterations to the raw file processing has to do with their A.I. editing options. It would be a shame if they ruined the capabilities of the camera for the chance to charge people for A.I. in 2025.
I've been subscribe to you from the days of my s9 plus and now that I've upgraded to my s24 ultra I've come back to check the astrophotography capabilities of The 24 ultra
Thank you for this super interesting video. Those 3 final photos certainly show that today's mobiles are capable of some stunning photos of the sky at night. As for Samsung's raw, I suspect that the reason they are doing the cardinal sin of processing those supposedly raw files (and by so much) is to disguise the fact that the cameras/s are not quite as good as their marketing would want you to believe. It's certainly a slippery slope of fooling the customer more and more. It also reminds me of today's near 100% autotune/melodyne/miming at live concerts/dehumanising vocals/fake product etc. It also reminds me of todays GPU's and Nvidia/AMD/Intel pushing to have those looming Upscaling and Fake Frames hard-coded (and hidden) as on, permanently...perhaps a few 'options' to fool you.
I'm so thankful for this. I take northern lights photos just as a hobby. Yesterday I opened my brand new S24 Ultra, which is replacing my S22 Ultra. I have been using the Expert raw for a while now but was instantly disappointed in the photos I got with the S24. I bought it for the camera more specifically astrophotography. I have decided to return the S24 because of it. Maybe this is the push I needed for a real camera.
your light ruined the expert shot, the reflection from you light easily visible in the center of image, also the pro shot have this problem, and for the expert astro shot i think your light went off based on video 7:48 . all i say is it's not a fair comparison
I have found, even with any/all "AI" enhancements off, still crapifies single astro images. On S22 Ultra, you witness the damage in real-time: picture completes, looks good, then it turns to crap. Actual astrophotography images (using astro mode) look pretty ok. For single images, I would use the PRO camera rather than expert raw. PRO 8mages look good and don't get "enhanced" (as long as you turn those settings off.)
@@BrentHall alright thx u ,,,, maybe some other time ❤️🔥❤️🔥 I really wanna know how best/good the master mode is on the OnePlus 12,, that's why,,but anywho ,,,thx u again ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
That really depends on your personal definition of good. If you think my images were decent and would be happy with similar quality results, then yeah, it's good. If you thought they weren't great and wouldn't be happy with similar results, then you might want to look into a different camera for astro. As far as phones go, I think it's pretty solid.
Hi Brent! Thanks again for another well-made video! ✨️ It would be nice if you could test out one of the GCam versions on S24 or even S23 ... especially in terms of improved RAW quality (instead of Samsung AI messups). 🙏🏼
Yeah I feel you. If it wasn't for this channel, I wouldn't have upgraded to the S23U or this one from my S22U. Not enough difference for me to personally justify spending that much on a phone. Oh well, at least I could make some videos for you guys about it, lol.
Thank you for making this video. All s24ultra owners on RUclips don't bother to make astrophotography videos. This Is why I like your channel. ( same comment for s23ultra as well ) 👍👍
Wow, this video is all what I was looking for, thank you for taking your time to identify the mistakes of what should've a pro experience especially with RAW files, for a long time I was waiting for someone to say the truth about what Samsung are doing in their processing. Especially for us amatuers who like to geek out with a device they have in their pockets, have a feel for what the pros are doing and maybe start out from here into the world of photography.
Hi brent thanks again as always for your great work... Hope that samsung fixes this next week with the first updates... If no this would be a shame for sam... Hopefully this isn't happen 🙏🙏
Your videos have me intrested in doing this as a hobby. I have a S22 ultra and a S24 ultra. Do you still prefer the 24 over the 22 despite whats going on with the Dng files? And also, what tripod do you recommend? Really informative videos man you got another subscriber here.
Thanks man, I'm glad you're liking the content! If you want me to be brutally honest...I don't even care anymore. I don't mean that in a bad way though. I just mean that the differences between these newer versions are minute, and they are all capable of getting similar results for what they are. More brutal honesty...if it weren't for this channel, I would not be upgrading my phone every year, because for photography, I just don't think there's enough change to warrant the price of yearly updates. I struggle to afford them as it is. What I do enjoy though, and why I keep putting myself in the hole with phone debt every year, is because I love helping people and getting them interested in photography, and phones are the absolute best place to start. So I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying it. The dng file thing is pretty annoying though, I really wish they'd fix that, but I doubt they will. As for tripods, I should have a couple listed in the description for ones that I use and recommend. Normally I'm a bit picky with my tripods for my bigger cameras, but for phones I really think just about anything will work since they're so light.
Eh I prefer the way iPhone takes astro photos. The pixel is also really nice but the thing I dont like about pixel is the overprocessed look it has. iPhone has more "grain" in it because it does less processing and it looks a bit more natural like film. The Galaxy Astro mode is honestly not doing it for me. It looks washed out every single time. And I dont care for the character of it. Id rather go with Pixel or iPhone. And then aside from Astro mode, I choose iPhone because the telephoto lens is much more reliable and it captures more light and at times it even out zooms the Galaxy's telephoto as well due to the amount of light it can capture.
I highly doubt it will. I don't think Samsung views this as an issue. I think they designed it way because that's what they want, but we'll see. I'll certainly check after the update. Just don't hold your breath for a fix for this.
It's all digital guys. Samsung is making you think you took a great photo of the moon. I take long zooms photos on the lake at sunset and they turn out out grainy in s23 ultra. My $600 infrasonic camera takes better zoom shots.
You'd be forgiven for think thinking that. It's a good line of logic; however in terms of overall image quality, it doesn't really matter that much when it comes to the phones. IMHO, the images I got in this video and all of my other phone astro videos over the years are a good representation of the upper limits of the image quality they can produce. I just feel like there's kind of a plateau or ceiling that the phones can and have hit for image quality due to physics and the restraints placed on them by their hardware. There's just only so much a tiny little sensor and lenses can do, you know? AI and software improvements have helped to make a pretty big jump for phone IQ, but I really feel like it's kind of peaking. Are these the best images ever from a phone, of course not, but I really don't think they could be that much better, even with perfect astro conditions, as I have been out quite a few times in such conditions with the phones. I'm still going to do a video about photographing the milky way with it here in the next new moon phase though.
Here's the full editing video I said I'd do. It's long and in-depth: ruclips.net/video/ZDQhhOFSCgk/видео.html

What tripod and phone mount tripod head are you using here? Doesnt seem to be the one in your links.
Oh, that's the Heipi tripod. I don't normally have this one in my phone videos because most phone photographers think it's a bit overkill, but I like it a lot for all kinds of stuff. I made a video about it too, but it's this one: heipivision.com/products/heipi-3-in-1-travel-tripod?sca_ref=4619310.99uWoz6ilv
I used it for this one because I actually forgot all my phone mounts, and luckily this tripod has one built in to the actual head, so it saved me, lol.
At 2.26 when you press to take the photo how do you get it to do the 20 second timer? Mine doesn't do that. Thanks
It's not a timer. I changed the shutter speed. You can do it in both pro mode and expert raw mode.
I wanted to thank you for introducing us to all the modes
as you know, I have been following you since 21u on this subject
Basically I would say the 4min astro mode is more than sufficient
And unfortunately yes, RAW is dead
Otherwise, I saw that you were in 24Mpix in Expert Raw
Do you find the output better than 12 or 50Mpix?
Otherwise in companion, what options did you put for:
Adaptive Pixel
high-end digital zoom
softening photos
thanks for sharing
I'm waiting to see the other video of course!
Great info! thanks 🙂 at 12min there is a small typo in the word ASTRO. maybe you already know ;-)
Is Iso 800 not too much ? I thought you would use lowest possible for less noise 🤔
How can you take 4 minutes still and not see the earth's rotation? Is it available to other samsung S line? I have an S22
Because it's not taking a single 4 min exposure, it's taking multiple shorter exposures and stacking them in the phone.
@BrentHall Thanks for your answer. So there is a form of tracking? Should you not see star trails if not?
No, it's not tracking, just stacking. Each shot is like 15 sec, then it takes about 15-20 of those and then aligns and stacks them, then crops and processes the final image to a jpeg all in the phone.
@@BrentHall Oh I see
Thanks!
Im trying to get my head around this 4 min exposure with no star trails. Is that a tracking mount you're using?
No tracker. It's stacking multiple shorter exposures. I'm pretty sure I talked about it a bit in the editing part of the video, but I split that and made a separate video about the whole editing process. It ended up talking like 7 shots at ~19 sec and stacked them in the phone during the 4 min.
Question: What is the best format to use on S24? and why? thanks
If you lowered the ISO but increased the shutter time would you not get much clearer photos?
Marginally, but then you'll also start getting star trails, which I didn't want.
I had my first cloudless night since getting my s24 (not the ultra. Wanted to go down in size after my s21u)
Just doing a 30 second exposure in expert raw turned out fine. Astrophotography mode 4min? Barely anything. I'll have to go out of town on the weekend and try it somewhere other than my backyard
I'm pretty new, I noticed your iso was in the thousands, don't you want the lowest possible Isolation to help get rid of noise in the photo?
Usually, but you can't do that in astrophotography, there just isn't enough light to collect, especially with phones since you can't do more than a 30 sec exposure. If you're going to do astro, with any camera, then you'll be shooting with very high isos. Space is a dark place, lol. The way we (astrophotographers) get around this is to take many images and stack them to reduce noise. I have a whole astrophotography playlist if you're ever interested.
thanks! I'll check it out!@@BrentHall
How would it look at 50ISO and 30seconds?
Very dark
@@BrentHallNever dared to up the ISO as much as you did and was amazed to see myself in pitch black using the pro mode but that was back when got my first S6 Edge , loved it ever since , and now they allow even 30 seconds shutter speed ? That should make it even brighter.
Good video. Always like your videos. Very informative and interesting. Was all set to replace my S22 Ultra with the S24 Ultra but having watched many RUclips reviews I felt the device was very disappointing. Decided to import an Oppo Find X7 Ultra.
I've heard good things about that Oppo.
No one talks about shooting videos on a flat profile on galaxies anymore....any advice on doing it the right way
The only way you can natively create a flat profile is by switching down to FHD, and even then creating a flat profile isn't going to work like shooting in a log profile.
What I found is the default app does give RAW files but the "expert RAW" doesn't
Informative video. I watch most of yours. The DNG issue seems to be the same with my S23 Ultra. Lightroom's Denoise feature doesn't work with the phone's DNGs.
Yeah, it's the same thing. It seems this is how samsung wants all of their raw images to be packaged from now on, which is a huge bummer.
Thanks. I'm interested in attaching phone to 10" Dob.
Astro mode is a stacking mode, but it is better to do it with external stacking software and use a time shift gimbal for the Earth's rotation. I find it much better and have very good results. If you only have a static tripod, you can also calculate the earth's rotation with the stacking software
How is the DNG file otherwise. I mean for landscapes for example
I did another video on that:
ruclips.net/video/RdqaMErFILI/видео.html
I couldn't see telephoto option in my s24 ultra
Можно нажимать на стилус... И не тыкать в экран же...
That was a really great to see such a great thing in such a small device that fit inside your pocket.📱
Definitely handy to always have this kind of capability on hand.
Thanks so much for this video Brent.
I have finally upgraded my telephone to the S24 Ultra About time as the Samsung S20 was getting a little out of date. Phone photography has also become a new hobby. I cannot wait to try the astro stuff out myself. Loved this video and look forward to the next one. Take care.
I'm glad it helped!
Oh wow, thanks for sticking around that long! I really appreciate it. 🫡
But I will never agree to Compare Camera with any Phone, Big Lies . Cameras are Truly Real to Real Professional Photographers. Have great day People
I have found, even with any/all "AI" enhancements off, still crapifies single astro images.
Hi Brent I'm a new subscriber ,,ur welcome,,,,can u please do the OnePlus 12❤️🔥
Hey, thanks. I appreciate that! I'd love to try out other phones, but unfortunately, this is all I have.

@@mrunknown6557 oh yeah this one to❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
do you think the s23 ultra is better for video and
images than the s24 ultra? great pics by the way nice video
So is the 24 ultra good or not so good for astro photography? 🤔
That really depends on your personal definition of good. If you think my images were decent and would be happy with similar quality results, then yeah, it's good. If you thought they weren't great and wouldn't be happy with similar results, then you might want to look into a different camera for astro.
As far as phones go, I think it's pretty solid.
@@BrentHall So in your opinion the camera of the 24 ultra is rather good for astro photography? 🙂
Buddy try Vivo x 100 pro let's see what a big sensor can do
Hi Brent! Thanks again for another well-made video! ✨️ It would be nice if you could test out one of the GCam versions on S24 or even S23 ... especially in terms of improved RAW quality (instead of Samsung AI messups). 🙏🏼
Thank you for this. I currently have an S22 and I'm now not going to rush into getting an S24...
( same comment for s23ultra as well ) 👍👍
Thanks man, I'm glad you liked it!
You shouldn't avoid 5x. In fact (daytime) this lense +sensor is of higher quality than 3x
Amazing how astro picks up the chemtrails at night
Normally I'm a bit picky with my tripods for my bigger cameras, but for phones I really think just about anything will work since they're so light.
oh my god I didint saw any youtuber doing a difrint and a beutiful vidio like whats you are made its out of mind🔥🌟👏
Can you test the Xiaomi 14 Ultra?
No, unfortunately I don't have anything but the Samsung.
How do you like New Mexico?
I love it.
Anyone experienced heat while using camera in s24 ultra
Would be interesting to see ten min picture too.
One of best subscriptions I did on youtube. Thank you
Hey thanks man, I really appreciate that! 😀🙏
I have been so disappointed with the S24 Ultra for astro 😔 The 50mp sensor and lens aren't great. Wish I would have gone for the S23 instead!
I have found that the expertraw files are unusable for the past 2 generations. Pro mode on the other hand gave much better results when editing
I'm hoping the upcoming update will fix all of this.
I highly doubt it will. I don't think Samsung views this as an issue. I think they designed it way because that's what they want, but we'll see. I'll certainly check after the update. Just don't hold your breath for a fix for this.
My son captured andromeda galaxy with pixel 6 without any telescope 5 min exposure i think.
Thank you Brent and wife.

You should use your pen to take your photos. Much more comfortable
It is always a pleasure to hit that Like button for you. 😊
Wow nice video . Thank you for sharing this information
You're welcome, I hope it helped.
Very good video 👏👏👏
It's all digital guys. Samsung is making you think you took a great photo of the moon. I take long zooms photos on the lake at sunset and they turn out out grainy in s23 ultra. My $600 infrasonic camera takes better zoom shots.
My friend, you are great, I recorded the video, thank you for sharing very good information.
i had no idea this was even a feature
Well I hope this video helped then, because astro is fun! 😀😁

Ironically, the best phone I've found for astrophotography is the Moto One, it costs 90 dollars and far outperforms my S21 ultra
I am new to the channel... I must say he is very underrated
I'll take that as a compliment...though I prefer "unknown" to underrated! 😅😉
Pro tip, use the pen to just do it from a better position

It is cool photos! I want to buy S24! Thank you!!!
I do believe Apple or Sony pay to Samsung to keep it to lower Quality Photos on this Phone,
AWESOMEEE !!!
amazing dude
I'd wager your shots would be better with no moon and a perfectly dark/clear sky
