“Once you are over the initial amazement that it can do it at all, you are forced to conclude that it doesn’t do it very well” applies to shooting astro with cell phones as much as cows running steeplechase races.
samsung is smoking high stuff for processing the RAW mode too😂, you are the only one I have seen so far who have pointed this sketchy behaviour of Samsung ruining tte manual mode. You are the best at what you do!
Glad to see a new S24 Ultra video. I haven't done any astro with my S24U yet, but yeah, sadly ExpertRAW does some weird extra processing, which it didn't do on the S23 Ultra. What I noticed from your screen recordings: you might want to try the 50MP mode and also use manual focus. If I recall correctly the sharpest results were somewhere between 0.8 and 0.9 on the focus scale. I just played around to find what gave me the sharpest results. Also, 20 seconds and 800 ISO gave me the best results. But that was all on the S23U, so not sure how well that translates to the S24U. Maybe give that a shot, might help a bit 😅
@@baochinhnguyen3221 Sadly don't have the S23U anymore to compare myself, but technically it's the same 200MP sensor in both phones, the only difference would be processing
as someone just not finally starting to get in to this as a hobby, think my plan is to play with taking astrophotos on the s24, get a feel for actually shooting things, messing around with editing and everything before biting the bullet and moving to an actual camera
That's a perfect plan! The pro mode on these phones really allow you to start understanding the exposure triangle and get a good feel for what can be done. And definitely don't forget to learn some solid editing techniques! That's just as important these days, and the apps are so powerful now.
I'm 2 months late but i hope you see this comment as it might help.. Samsung s24 ultra dngs are linear dngs.. meaning there is linear processing applied on it but since its linear there is no data loss.. apparently adobe denoiser doesnt support linear dngs so try to convert it to a regular dng first since all the data is there..
I've read that the post-processing it does automatically even on the raw and pro is a bug that will be fixed in the next soft update in August. Also, even though it says that it only affects photo mode, setting intelligent optimization in the settings to minimum does noticeably decrease the post-processing when using the 12mp cam, even in pro mode (on 50 & 200 it doesn't help because the phone takes longer to take a photo, giving it more time to post-process).
Ive watched a few of your videos, and they are really great. I havent got a very technical mind on cameras/phones but your videos help show me settings that work. So thank you. Just curious to see/know if there are any other apps that shoot in proper raw mode. Would these photos save in a similar file format and edit in a similar way compared to the inhouse stuff on the s24u and would that then allow the use of the de noiser you mentioned in the video? Do the stack i would also be curious to see the result.
Thanks man, I appreciate that and I'm glad the videos are helping! There are other programs out there, but I haven't tried them, so I wouldn't be much help for that, unfortunately.
GGGGG the RAW is so much better than the automated astro/"pro" mode.. who would have guessed it? lmao.... anybody actually expected any other result? lol
Use whichever one you need for the shot, at least in terms of focal length. Personally I always keep mine on the 12mp though, because it gives me the best results.
Would love to see pro mode stacking multiple images; Damon Scotting captured a great pic of the Andromeda Galaxy, he made a video on it, actually crazy
Could you please compare the stock camera with third party camera app like ProShot because the stock is not giving a real raw files even the pro mode is processed.
a little hello to thank you I gave up on astro with this gear I just check the basic app and auto night mode the rest is no longer at the level of the S22u, even to stack with Sequator Looking forward to following you
Thank you for the video. I am seeing much the same with my S24 Ultra. Excessively warm so I now set the white balance also to cool it down. The last update did fix the horrible banding problem in astrophotography mode and the raw file size has increased so looks to be different than a plain jpg in a dng wrapper. I am getting decent results in astrophotography mode now so glad about that - glass half full😊
All that green in Expert Raw after you adjusted the white balance could be airglow, especially near the horizon. If Expert Raw is taking multiple exposures and stacking, as if you were using a tracker and stacking images, this makes the airglow far more pronounced.
You should stack a hundred of RAW photos (or more) using Deep Sky Stacker (DSS). You may also need to take darks and flats in the field next time, to properly reduce noise, sensor imperfections, and vignetting. And a startracker mount like Nomad would help a lot.
@@BrentHall I wouldn’t imagine that there is too much big of a difference given that they’re both high quality phones but I’m probably going for the pixel, thanks for the help.
I guess the raw post processing was due to what so called intelligent optimization in samsung camera setting which is set Maximum by default. I'll try the minimum setting some times
That's this one: heipivision.com/products/heipi-3-in-1-travel-tripod?sca_ref=4619310.99uWoz6ilv I use it a lot, but I don't put it in my phone video descriptions because it's usually a bit more than most phone users are looking for. Awesome tripod though, and I used in this video because I forgot my phone mount for my other tripods but this one has one built into the head, so it came in clutch that night, lol.
I wonder if Adobe isn't building in the file format profile for Samsung phones on purpose, it wouldn't surprise me that crApple and Adobe are hand in hand to promote the more "professional" or high end phone gear is a crApple phone, purposely making Samsung phone look crappier. Of course Samsung could simply have a propreitary DNG format that they're not providing a proper import filter into Adobe? With ON1 PhotoRAW 2024 Max I can't read my S23 Ultra RAW images, so it's likely just Samsung being annoying with their file formats and processing that they're not allowing RAW editing software to access and edit outside the phone.
Yeah, it's really weird, and seems to be getting weirder with the last couple of galaxy iterations. Samsung is definitely doing strange things to their dngs and I'm not stoked about it.
That means whatever you are, there is too much light pollution, either from a city or the moon, or both. Google dark sky map and find out how far away you have to go to get to some darker skies, and make sure to check the moon phase for rise and set times.
That green is the Aurora. I take night pics of the Alaska sky and sometimes they become red. When the aurora is real strong, I get spectacular pics of it.
I'm so not happy with the S24 Ultra. I should be able to edit in the phone and not have to bring it into the desktop to edit it better. I traded in a Google pixel 6pro phone which is a much better phone for this S24 Ultra. So disappointed with it. I'm going back to Google when I can. Samsung should of never messed with the camera.

If possible , could you do some tests on the phone and give us a video on how to make the phone work for astro?

Would you recommend to a pixel phone for taking shots similar to this (eg a pixel 7 pro) or a s21 ultra (both are in my price range)
Idk, I haven't used a pixel since the 6 pro came out. I tend to prefer the Samsungs for phone cameras, but that's purely personal preference.

How did you get the shots starting @4:48? Absolutley beautiful.
Those were timelapses from my canon mirrorless cameras.
finally got into expert raw on my s23 ultra my tripods outside rn doing another 10min i wasnt gonna try any 4 mins i will thanks
Maybe your green shirt is reflecting off the stars
So if we stack pro mode photos will it solve the problem which having with expert RAW?
BTW I have S23Ultra
Idk, but maybe I'll try it and see how it turns out.
Why you use 12mpix not 50 or 200 ?
Increasing resolution decreases the light intake, as the pixels are binned at 12MP
on the s24 the 12 almost always looks worse, regardless of anything else the 50 does the best
Yes. Do stack
I have some strange red rings in my astrophotos s24u 😢

Auto focus definitely hurt you a bit here, no question. That softness is quite obvious.

I'm 100% sure it's not aurora, as it is from New Mexico. But we get green airglow pretty often with long exposures down here at midlatitudes.
