      Actually, the R5 is the best selling Canon pro camera to date, they have exceeded expectations and made an announcment about this. R5 is a pro PHOTO camera, NOT a video camera. Anybody who buys it for video only has only themselves to blame.
      As a pro photographer, if I'd spent $5000 on an A7SIII and then tried to give my clients 12 MP photos, I'd get laughed at, then fired. Should I blame Sony?

      @@77dris how did he make a "mistake"? The R5 was marketed by Canon as a high end production camera. He literally screen capped the marketing material wherein Canon states this. Canon chose the bed they are lying on. The overheating issue is a crippling situation, especially because it affects the camera even for just shooting photos. If you rationalize that this is an amazing photo camera that Canon overhyped as a video camera... if you are a professional, you still have to ask yourself... can I rely on this item for a full day shoot? The answer seems to be no.

And i'm sure the software is designed to be conservative in protecting against overheating the CF cards as to not damage them. Exactly. The C300mkIII (which also shoots on CFexpress cards) constantly emits hot air from its cooling vents and the cards also get extremely hot after use. I use the iPhone now but want something with higher quality and good IBIS. Some of my hikes can last 3-4 hours (and also in the hot Texas sun sometimes!) so I definitely want something that will last and not overheat. It’s unbelievable to me that a camera company would release a camera boasting about it’s 4k and 8k abilities, and then basically make those settings unusable for most professionals due to overheating. It sounds like they weren’t really ready to release a camera with those options yet after all - at least until they can resolve the overheating issues. So disappointing. Appreciate this - but I have several issues with the findings and commentary of this video. (Note: I got all my RF gear and expect to get my R5 in the next couple of days). 1. "Who buys this camera to shoot photos?" - Are you kidding me?!? It's got amazing face and animal tracking, fantastic IBIS (adding at least 3 stops), 40 MPs, and an amazing set of advanced lenses. Why would you NOT buy this to shoot still photos? It's sharpness, color fidelity and ease of operation are unbeatable. 2. "You shouldn't rely on this camera to shoot a full-day wedding". Agree, but no one would. If you want to shoot a full days video, why would you get a photo camera to the game? Rent a Canon XA50 or something like that. This is a photo camera with the added ability to shoot amazing quality bursts of video, or extended video in HD/30. Works fine for me.

    Nice review as always Matt. Although the conclusion: "You can not rely on they video as a professional filmmaker" completely leaves out professional hybrid shooters who want to shoot excellent stills at 45mpx and 1080p 24p and 1080p 120fps at high mb/s. The R5 is a best of video production camera at those specs AND a beast of photography camera. Its just not an 8K RAW/4K HQ/4K60p production camera, and frankly, I don't know what kind of wedding videographer would be interested in shooting a wedding ceremony entirely in 8K Raw unless they were shooting with the C500mk ii before and felt there wasn't enough resolution! LOL! The 8K is a novelty for that special shot you really need to zoom in on. That's few and far in between. Best would be to dedicate one of the custom modes to 8K RAW, one to 4K60P, and the rest of the time stay at 4K 24 and 1080 120p. That's how I see it... but what do I know... I preordered two A7siii 's! LOL!

    Really good review of this topic! As a big canon fan, I am honestly very disappointed with the company. I always compared it to an Iphone, which most if time had lower specs than it's competition but worked most of the times better overall. It seems like canon decided to change this strategy and they really totally messed up. Also after seeing the improved Sony a7s3 colors and menue there are really less and less reasons to stay with canon after 10 years.

    Very good testing, thank you. I wonder if you had the chance to try the s35-mode, which is oversampled 4K and not supposed to overheat. I know everybody is panning the R5 as a video tool, but if you think of it as a very good stills camera with a small c200 inside, I think it makes quite a lot o f sense (lack of reliable slo-mo notwithstanding). If the s35 4k turns out to be as reliable as the non HQ 4k, that is.

    Nothing beats skill and talent. There are many wedding videos on RUclips now. Kinda short sited to think that EVERY wedding photographer shoots in the same exact way. A more accurate way of stating it, would be to say, YOU don't know how to use the camera without it overheating. Simple. Other people do however. Suggest conversing with your peers and see how they are doing it. The warning doesn't mean it's overheated at or past it's 104 F threshold. Get a FLIR or equal temp measuring device and stay within you published tolerances.

    There are two ways to make it work.
    In both cases, you will have to have at least two of them.
    First way is to have one shooting always in 4K non HQ 30fps or lower and the other one only shooting the occasional 4K60p or 4K120p and then turned off immediately to cool down.
    The other way is to have both cameras recording to an Atomos Ninja V, and switching cameras every two hours.

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  4 года назад

      I could see swapping bodies, but then you would still need even more bodies for the wedding ceremony, because once you film even in 4K non HQ they will lose their ability to record any of the wedding reception in high frame rates.
      If you go the Atomos route, you're looking at $10K for 2 bodies with recorders. 😅

    • @spiroszaharakis2648
      @spiroszaharakis2648 4 года назад

      @@whoismatt
      In scenario 1, you can shoot with camera a continuously at non HQ mode and the camera b will be switched on only to shoot the occasional shot at 60p or 120p only when it is necessary and then put to rest. I believe that unless you constantly shoot at 60p and 120p on camera b, you will be able to shoot a few 60p/120p shots and then have the camera rest for 15-20min before you touch it again so in practice you will be able to shoot for quite a while.
      With scenario 2, you can get away with 2 bodies, and one recorder.Just swap the recorder from camera 1 to camera 2 when you have a long enough break.
      Still an expensive way to do things but on the other hand, working with two bodies for redundancy was always a standard for unrepeatable events like weddings.

    No question that Canon went about the marketing for this camera poorly but as a professional in my business having at least two of everything has always been my motto. Nothing else in this form factor will do the high quality options the R5 does. Either get two R5’s or the A7Siii for its 4k30/60/120 and to save having to buy Sony lenses use an EF adaptor for canon glass and use the R5 for stills, 4K HQ with an external recorder and 8K internal for video with option of 35MP still frame grabs. Not to mention incredible IBIS. Realistically nobody needs all this but why not offer what it can do. Minus lens costs your in 9 grand for both bodies. It’s not chump change but it’s your business and you can bill appropriately for offering the best quality images (skill aside:) This is a pro piece of gear doing things others can’t at the moment with obvious limitations based on spec. If we want the best for our clients these are the limitations of our time. We are either a professional or we are not.
