Hi, great video! I'm also a professional photographer and I shot a wedding last weekend with my R5, video only. I had the camera for about 2 weeks prior the wedding and I tested and tried out the camera a lot, to really get to know the camera with all it's possibilities and limitations. I shot the whole wedding in 1080 25p ( I'm in Sweden) ALL-I, in a tweaked Neutral color profile so that I'd have the material in H.264. I also had an external monitor ( Small HD Focus) to use the waveforms for my exposure. I shot some selected shots in (mostly B-roll) 1080 50p, 4K 25p (normal and HQ) 60p and also a few 4K 120 . The video will be delivered in 1080. The camera did great, it never overheats in 1080 or normal 4K 25. After roughly 6 hours of shooting I did some burst of 4K 120 slowmotion and it did overheat, which I had calculated for that it would do, these were bonus shots in slowmotion, so i just flipped back to 1080 again, or normal 4K. So my point being, this camera is amazing when used to it's capabilities and possibilities, I mean we get awesome image quality in 1080 and 4k in no crop fullframe, in 10-bit 422 LOG if you want - internally. Of course I hope that a firmware update will enable the 4K HQ in either limitless or at least more of it before it overheats, but I will get a Ninja V anyways, like to be honest many professionals do, so then that problem will be gone. Thanks for taking your time reading this, hope you got some good info. 👊😂
Hey John! Thanks for sharing your experience. It's super good news to hear that although I'm bummed the 4k 120 overheated after a couple bursts. I'm still awaiting mine to arrive, but I hope it's something I'll be able to use without huge setbacks.
I understand your point in getting an external recorder to eliminate the overheating issue. My issue is I just should have to buy a third party piece of equipment so my camera doesn’t over heat with there better setting. That’s my biggest hold between the R5 and the C70.
@@lucinadubai1772 hi, yes the Ninja V will not overheat the camera, if you record to the actual SSD that you have to buy separate to the Ninja, at least not for me. But now with the latest firmware to the R5 it hasnt overheated on me even when I record internally to the memory cards. But I dont shoot much slow motion or 8K RAW.
As long as you aren't using it as an A-Cam and shooting lower compression. Of course, you can use it on weddings. It's just an expensive camera for that. I still think this overheating problem is more artificial firmware limitation.
I'm Sony user, but I think Canon use this overheating problem to sell more cinema cameras for that purpose. If R5 would've similar features as C200, people can switch to smaller body, if they don't need that reliability because of size.
Thank you for sharing and your honest thoughts. I’ve been using my R5 for stills and loving it. Happy to see the R5 is working out for your professional needs as well!
You mean to tell me you took the recording and heating limitations information and found solutions to such limitations, like some dirty PROFESSIONAL! TOTAL AND UTTER DISHONOR! Glad to hear your thoughts.
Brandon. Love your work. Canon did themselves a disservice with the way the marketed this camera. If the had just come out and marketed this as a higher resolution EOS R and price it at $3000 it would have been a home run! But when you market it as an 8K beast of a video camera, charge $4000 for it and then tell people they have to jump through all types of hoops to used the OVERLY MARKETED features then the reaction is warranted. Anyway, I'm really happy youre back making videos bro.
This is why i like the Canon EOS 90D so Much, I know people hate on the crop sensor but the EOS 90D is Phenomenal and it only has the option of shooting in IPB Mode, having the option to shoot 120FPS or 60FPS in 1080p is wonderful, i can just scale up to 4k, but the 90D i think is better than the Original EOS RP and almost as good as the original R if it had only been made a MIRRORless Crop sensor that took RF lenses it would be insane.
Thank-you! But I wish you had waited a couple more weeks. I’m still on the list to get my pre-ordered R5 and the more “bad” reviews there are, the more cancelled orders, and the faster I’ll get mine 💁♀️. This was a welcome and surprisingly rare look at someone actually using it to actually do something. If I did not also own a cinema camera, I would not be getting an R5. But it has everything I care about most, and I don’t *need* it for extended shots at 8k or 120 FPS that would burn through my storage devices anyway...
Fellow Houston photographer, I've used it on 2 weddings so far, photos only but the only issue I've noticed is when an using older LP-E6, I had a one ERR 70, I took the battery and turned it off, put it back in and the Err 70 went away. I've also only had the circular polarizer EF to RF mount adapter. All of my EF lenses has worked better than when I had I on my 1DXMark 2, I have the Sigma ARts 24, 35, 50, 85, 105, 135, Tamron 24-70 G2, Tamron 15-30.
Dude! Nothing better than doing it for yourself and seeing what you can come up with rather than just being a talking head. A positive attitude, some skill and experience, is a winning combination. Well done!
Did you get a chance to try to shoot the R5 with a ninja without the memory card inside the camera? I hear that eliminates the overheating and you can shoot for hours in 4k HQ
I set mine to auto power off after 30 seconds: This saves almost the same amount of battery life and overheating as the "real" "off"-mode. There's technically not that big of a difference on Canon cameras. In fact: With my 60D and 80D I often forgot to switch it off for days: The auto power off function did the job (batteries were not drained). And it only takes 1-2 seconds to be ready to shoot again.
Truth is that if you like the camera, you will find a way to make it work. You might die of anxiety seeing that timer every time but hey, you will be happy in post when you see the image. Your money, your career, your choice. If the risk is worth it for YOU and you're happy, we are too. But you sound more like a fanboy when you can't acknowledge that not everybody can afford to take this risk. Not everybody have the same shooting style and/or the same circumstances.
I completely agree with everything you have said about this not being cheating. It's just figuring out how you can work with the camera you have in the situation you are in. I love my EOS R as I work within those limitations because I don't feel like they hinder the shoot. But to each their own. I'm not one to freak out about overheating but I also don't like starring at a countdown lol.
Thank you for an honest and unbiased assessment of this amazing, amazing camera. You did a great job on the video and obviously on the wedding. Go with what you know to be true and don't concern yourself with the pessimists. You're a fabulous videographer!
Hi Brandon. Nice video. As for photo and video, do you think the Canon Eos R5 is a big leap from the Canon Eos R, and the Sony A7iii. Thanks in advance.
Have you shot a full wedding or event with the M50? I got the M50 and gear for it and probably buy the M50 Mark 2 when it comes out so then I can do video and photos.
Super cool. I can't tell the difference between All-i and IPB in your video. The wedding footage does look very nice. If I were your client, I would take this video in a heartbeat. If I were your client, I would rather you get some great moment footage in 1080p than some crappy footage in 4k HQ. I asked a lot of my friends and they all care about is the great moments and not too much about resolution. Great job.
That poor dynamic range shows me that canon hasn’t improved much in that area of their sensors. You didn’t mention whether you shot in HQ or line skipped mode. Did you try the c-log? I would think that weddings would be the perfect place for c-log given the lighting conditions.
Bro I’m not having it. What are you doing creating content with the camera. We need more over heating tests😂 Good work bro. Ps. Canon, fix the record limit(29min? Why?), and give me canon Log 3.
I sold my 5DIV and am currently using my EOS R as my primary, I have some lenses I need to sell that I am not using anymore but I think I will get the camera after the first firmware update comes out. Hopefully that fixes most of the video issues. Canon is lying about the cooldown times on the camera, the sensor cools down very quickly on that camera. Maybe its a limitation designed to increase the longevity of the sensor, or its an artificial limitation put on the body in order to cripple it so it doesn't compete with the c300iii.
Great review! However it seems you used the camera as like a c-cam really..for a lot of people paying for this they really want this to be their a-cam. There's no chance in hell i could ever afford an r5 as a b-cam so from that perspective would you honestly be comfortable using the r5 as your A-cam professionally? Say at a wedding, would be comfortable enough to grab your money shots on the r5 instead of your other cameras?
Killer post dawg ... very informative. Another cosigner for my plan to buy an R5; you confirmed my thoughts on workflow and added to them with camera settings. A smart man with a plan, can get the job done. Big Props!
This is the video I’ve been waiting to see. Nicely done, and gorgeous weddingvideo. Any couple would be overjoyed with that. I’ve been shooting photo and video with this camera for two weeks. I love it. It’s the perfect companion to my R, and I shoot c100, c200, and Lumix at work - along with the R5 and R. The R5 is still my favourite. Also, Canon pro support is the best, and I’ve never had to worry about shooting with my Canons in the driving Pacific Northwest rain. Can’t wait to use this tomorrow or a 75th Birthday party!
brandon i have a question what do u think of the software limitation canon put in and its been proven to be only a software limiter and canon did the b.s again what do u think
Great review! One question: Were you shooting 4KHQ at 60, or the regular 4K? And did you shoot anything at 4K-120, or was that too much pressure to put on the system in terms of heat? Thanks again!
well done Brandon! Did you also take stills between video shots? Because that is what I would want to work... not just single video clips but also loads of stills in between!
Great Video, could you tell me if you used Ronin S or Ronin SC with your R5? Also what lens was on it? I am about to pick up my Ronin for my R5 and I am not sure if SC can handle it...
Excellent review, my workflow is much like yours get what you must have and be conservative with everything else. There is no need for my type of work to be at 8k or at 4k 120fps, just using the basic 4k 24fps and 1080p 60fps. Autofocus and color rendition are the most important to me during the shoot. Do not forget about the post-process as well, time to delivery is extremely important for me.
I thought your confession was going to be 1080p 60fps where I was ready to type, “commmeeee onnnnn man!” 😂 You raise a good point, everyone trying to prove this camera overheats is literally doing just that, so no wonder it happens. I haven’t seen many videos of overheating in real world use like yours. Well done man. 👍
For $4000 I shouldn't have to do all these workarounds for it to just work. I understand the complexity of a RED that's not the same as doing workarounds to stop a camera from overheating
Good stuff. I knew this camera would be reliable if people can get past not using the highest quality mode. I want an R5 but too heavily invested in the Sony system so I ll stick with my a7riv and upcoming a7siii
Hi Brandon, Nice work to be objective! Did you try shooting stills or you just used video? Can you show your editing workflow? Are you using proxies or IPB files? Was it easy to edit on existing laptops/desktops? Check out No Life’s chart for shooting internally, externally with cf express card in slot, externally without cf express card in slot and using a dummy battery to get the longest shooting times.
Hi Brandon, To save you time, here’s the link and the chart is inside it: nolife.digital/2020/08/05/canon-r5-overheating-test-results/ You need to go the the next video where No Life sets it up the R5 in order to shoot 4K30 HQ mode unlimited recording to Ninja5 (of coarse limited to storage and battery). The CF Express Cards and SD cards needs to be removed from R5, ensure camera screen is set to auto off, hdmi + camera is set, and some other items I don’t remember. Some PAL users complain that they couldn’t get the results but it might be that they missed some steps as PAL and NTSC are only using different frequency standards and not affect the recording. Have fun and looking forward to see more of your contents! Stay safe.
I'll pass on this camera because if I'm spending 4k or more for a camera, I better be able to use it fully as a A cam not just as a dedicated B can. But hey, if it works for you more power to you 😉
Doesn't really make sense since people have been able to record for hours externally and get around the overheating by removing the card and battery to combat the heat.
@@MaxKoenig-Mk001 Not sure.. maybe since the cards get extremely hot. Turning off the internal monitor also helps. Either way, it makes more sense to me that it's heat related, as opposed to doing these things to disable the 'fake timers' for a different amount of time for every person who's tested it.
I am planning to rent R5 & shoot wedding paring with my 2nd cameraman's Eos R. Below is my plan of the wedding shoot. - Exterior & Interior shots of wedding party hotel ( 4K - 30fps ) - Details shots of rings and dress ( 4K - 30fps ) - Groom & Bride preparation ( 4K - 30fps ) - Blessings (short 10min polish ceremony) ( 1080p - 24fps ) - Exterior & interior shots of Marriage office ( 4K - 30fps ) - Marriage office ceremony ( 1080p - 24fps ) - Outside family/guests shot ( 4K - 30fps ) - Couple session around marriage office ( 4K - 60fps ) - Hall entrance & first dance ( 1080p - Me on 24fps & 2nd cameraman on 60fps ) - Dance performances ( 1080p - Me on 24fps & 2nd cameraman on 60fps ) - interviews ( 1080p - 24fps ) - Cake cut ( 1080p - Me on 24fps & 2nd cameraman on 60fps ) My Questions: 1. What do you think will be the best settings I can use on R5 as my main camera.? 2. I will be using rf to ef adapter, so what will be a good wide prime lens to pare with R5. Dose adapter gives any crop? 3. Are we able to switch between 1080p mode & 4K-Non HQ mode without any overheating problem?
Hey Brandon, thanks for the useful content! I have a question about that, I currently photograph and film weddings at the same time with the 1DX MK2, but i'm super pumped by the IBIS and Auto focus system of that R5. Do you think it could handle both without overheat? I'm only shooting small clips, like 30s max, then switch to photo mode, and do it again when I need. Thanks for your help!
Based on your previous video on this camera, I couldn't help but notice the dynamic range issue when you had a shot when half the screen was the sky and the other half was a dark area like a window sill. Also, I would be curious to know if image quality drops when overheating is indicated on the camera. Have you noticed? It's common for many cameras to have reduced quality (more noise, artifacts, blocky compression, etc) when the camera overheats.
Dynamic range continues to be an ongoing issue with the camera but I honestly think it's the sensor. So it doesn't matter what format you shoot it, it's going to happen.
Brandon Washington I have much better success with 8K raw personally with Dynamic a range. C-log 3, at least from my experience, is definitely giving me at least a stop better performance if not a stop and a half. C-log 3 is coming to the non raw modes via firmware soon.
Always listen to people who crunch out great works using the tool or use the tool to make a living. Not those gear reviewer who rent camera for review, they like to create controversial topic and hype on non issue, because they rely on click or view for living.
What's good brotha, enjoying your videos. I couldn't wait on the overheating issue to be fix so I went ahead and got c500 MKII but curios what image is better between Red Komodo and R5?
I got so much canon glass, and it's hard to jump into the R5 with all the bad coverage. I really only shoot in 1080 on my eos R, all I wanted was dynamic range improvement, but it doesn't look like it has any (like seriously, I just want my sky to be blue and my face to not have blown out highlights if there is a shine on it), maybe if they put in Clog3 or something, but right now... daaaang. R5 just hasn't won me over.
Yeah, you can work around the overheating depending on what you shoot but the dynamic range compared to the a7s iii is just night and day a youtuber had his sony log3 footage to download and i graded it and it was shot with the sky and subject in the same frame, and the sky was blue and subject perfectly exposed after the grade was done. And it can shoot raw 16 bit on an atomos v i dont even know what that looks like :). But Clog3 would make Canon better, better then the Sony idk we have to wait.
I agree with both of you. Dynamic range is far more important to me and as I continue to test the camera i'll see what's the best way to get the most out of it but honestly I haven't been too impressed.
@@bwashmedia yeah please do some tests if you can. I do hope the R5/6 gets better with log and firmware because they are a good option for a hybrid camera compared to the a7siii. even tho 12mp is still great if you only do online work with your photography. I might just wait for the A7iv since the a7iii looked like a lot of value on release
Props to both Sony and Canon because this has been one hell of a buying decision for me. Right now I'm still leaning Sony because I like the lens selection and product line philosophy a bit more. An A7sIII + the eventual A7IV seems like the perfect solution for my use case.
I know it's not the time for this. But he had my man looking out through a window he can't see out of. What he looking at? lol
It'll make more since in the official wedding edit lol. its for a transition. I can see how dumb that looks with out context.
I think he could see out of the window but the camera wasnt able to film it due to firmware restrictions.

By shooting IPB, you cut the bitrate by half. The camera only process half the data of All-I, of course it's less likely to overheat.

Hold on, so the 4k60 and all slow mo footage was shot from 60p and slowed down to 24p? hm it;s looks slower then that
Killer post dawg ... very informative. Another cosigner for my plan to buy an R5; you confirmed my thoughts on workflow and added to them with camera settings. A smart man with a plan, can get the job done. Big Props!
how is it for 4k video , and wedding photography, m a canon user and want to upgrade
That battery life point is probably the best one!
Great review! One question: Were you shooting 4KHQ at 60, or the regular 4K? And did you shoot anything at 4K-120, or was that too much pressure to put on the system in terms of heat? Thanks again!
Good job M8! informative and instructive
well done Brandon! Did you also take stills between video shots? Because that is what I would want to work... not just single video clips but also loads of stills in between!
All-I and IPB both are being recorded in 10bit 422 regardless of the codec thus you won't see much difference in the colour grading
Awesome show as per usual Mr Washington.
Not cheating brother. Great perspective and thanks for the real world test. Great work.
I always shoot IPB, I simply can't see a difference either on Canon or Panasonic GH5.
Let's go B!
Did you ever think at 90d for wedding video?
Happy for you, looks like you found it great for wedding
For $4000 I shouldn't have to do all these workarounds for it to just work. I understand the complexity of a RED that's not the same as doing workarounds to stop a camera from overheating
IPB is underrated! Great video!
Plz tell how many shots it taken on full charge plz plz reply
Good stuff bro 👍🏽
7:19 those Canon Skin tones everyone has been talking about 😍😍
Did you use the Ronin SC?
Good stuff. I knew this camera would be reliable if people can get past not using the highest quality mode. I want an R5 but too heavily invested in the Sony system so I
ll stick with my a7riv and upcoming a7siii
Thank you.... Finally a practical review from an actual working pro
Hi Brandon,
Nice work to be objective!
I'll definitely check out this chart for sure thanks!
Hi Brandon,
To save you time, here’s the link and the chart is inside it:
nolife.digital/2020/08/05/canon-r5-overheating-test-results/
You need to go the the next video where No Life sets it up the R5 in order to shoot 4K30 HQ mode unlimited recording to Ninja5 (of coarse limited to storage and battery).
Stay safe.
Hey Dude, nice video! what did you use for the split screen?
Did you shoot in log ?
I'll pass on this camera because if I'm spending 4k or more for a camera, I better be able to use it fully as a A cam not just as a dedicated B can. But hey, if it works for you more power to you 😉
The R6 should be great for wedding work. Question - is it still out of order shooting a wedding in 1080p in 2020.
I ask myself this, but most of the people I do videos for watch their content on their iPhones 😭😪 so I don’t think it matters 😂
Honest use of the camera. Great video!
Did you hear about the EosHD rumors that the overheating is fake and seems to be just a software limitation?
Doesn't really make sense since people have been able to record for hours externally and get around the overheating by removing the card and battery to combat the heat.
@@NelsenBrazill why should removing the card and battery fix an overheating issue?
@@MaxKoenig-Mk001 Not sure.. maybe since the cards get extremely hot. Turning off the internal monitor also helps. Either way, it makes more sense to me that it's heat related, as opposed to doing these things to disable the 'fake timers' for a different amount of time for every person who's tested it.
The "test" EOSHD did has been debunked. Check out DP review a guy got 69 mins of 8k after cooling the Camera for 12 hours.
@@Ramage7070 not finding that article. Where was it?
I love your channel bro! Glad I found your page!
Real world usage. I honestly feel the same way about IPB. Great video!!
What Tripod do you use in 4:00 .Thanks in advance
Isn’t All I better for color grading?
I am planning to rent R5 & shoot wedding paring with my 2nd cameraman's Eos R. Below is my plan of the wedding shoot.

- interviews ( 1080p - 24fps )
- Cake cut
( 1080p - Me on 24fps & 2nd cameraman on 60fps )
My Questions:
What lense your using
Nice review man!
That’s really nice to know 👍
Not sold, A7siii preordered, bump cannon
Can we shoot full hd in it?
Finally the review I was looking for!👍
Thanks for this excellent reality check!
why someone are gonna hate this camera, it is amazing.
From another fellow Houston shooter, Thank you for this great video and keeping it real! Can't wait for my R5 & R6 preorder! :)
Red Komodo not even close lol.
@@bwashmedia Dayumm!!! You ever in Los Angeles hit me up, Definitely want build with more shooters. Keep doing your thang bruh
Thank you for being a voice of reason. Great video!
Brandon your content rocks! Thanks buddy
Props to both Sony and Canon because this has been one hell of a buying decision for me. Right now I'm still leaning Sony because I like the lens selection and product line philosophy a bit more. An A7sIII + the eventual A7IV seems like the perfect solution for my use case.
What is wrong with ipb for goodness sake?
