I just got this camera specifically for wedding videography. I'm coming from the Blackmagic Pocket 6K and needed an option with Autofocus that I can trust during sunny ceremonies. I'm excited to put it to use next weekend for the first time.
I ended up getting a 100 watt hour viewmont battery for my first full wedding day. I will also have a few backup solutions on hand. I loved my GH5 and I really was only annoyed by the autofocus.
Came from a 5D Mk3 for stills. Due to Canon just not being there, I ventured into Panasonic and used the GH4 / GH5 / GH5-II for video years ago. With the advent of the R5C, Canon is finally ticking all the boxes, they should have ticked with the 5D Mk4 / EOS R when it comes to video. For sure. Also, the reason that it still drains the battery in standby is, that the sensor is still powered as it can record a few seconds before you hit the shutter button. So yes, to save battery, it's essential to turn off the camera. The Anton Bauer Titon base, that you mentioned or the Core SWX PowerBase Edge, that i'm using solve that issue.
How funny I use my GH5 for RUclips and hobby. I upgraded to the R5C for professional and RUclips work. I am currently second-guessing bringing my GH5 on the gimbal for a third camera.... Really cool content I am going to subscribe.
Thanks for the great review! Really love the R5c. Hitting the Media button to switch to media browser really helps the battery a lot between shooting, and is faster than switching the camera on and off.
I have the R3, and it sounds exactly like your talking about my camera, accept the battery life is great on the R3. Yes it hasn't got the cinema menu but is awesome. My only complaint is it has a lot of magenta/red in the face colours which I don't like, but i have sorted that now with a custom LUT and in camera settings. I actually went from 4k back to 1080p as i couldn't tell the difference in editing. It must be down sampled. This means i can shoot in any frame rate with no overheating. Have weather proofing and no heavy accessories.
@@ricr.4669 Highly recommended 1080p Alli (files are bigger than 4k IPB) it is so dam good, just add a little sharpening in post and you will not tell the difference on YT 4k res. And zero overheating. Of course if you are zooming in digitally in post, do that in 4k.
Awesome video, man! I'm about to shoot my first wedding video with the R5C in a couple weeks, and I have 2 exposure questions: 1. I'm wondering approximately how overexposed you normally aim to get clean shadows but still preserve detail in the highlights? I'm shooting CLOG3 with Cinema Gamut - approximately what IRE on the waveform do you aim to keep your subject at? 2. And do you find it cleaner to shoot with a wider aperture and, say 2000 ISO, or close down a bit and just jump up to 3200 to take advantage of the dual ISO? Thanks again, and keep up the great work!
Great review! Im a wedding filmmaker also and I just purchased the R5C. If I may ask, are you shooting in XF-AVC? I'm trying to nail down what I will shoot in. Thanks so much for the info!!!
When shooting on the C70 (similar firmware to the R5C) I find the XF-AVC is much easier to edit than the MP4, even though the quality is similar, if not identical. Holds true for the long-gop modes of XF-AVC too. Unless you find a good reason not to, I would stick with XF-AVC.
This was a great review! Honestly you’re the first person I have seen talk about the battery life this frankly. I got my R5C and thought I was crazy. I got 6 mins of video from my first fully charged battery… I returned it thinking it was defective 😂 I have the R5 and R6 and the moment and typically I’m working in start stop environments so in the last two years of use I have only had one overheating issue on the R6 and that was after four 1 hour interviews back to back. I might still add the R5C again when I test it with the support equipment it needs to be usable.
Having the right thing to power the camera is definitely important. But I'll definitely take needing an external power source over the camera overheating any day! SInce I shoot primarily handheld, adding a bit of weight to the camera with a battery doesn't hurt!
@@ShoreSummit I couldn’t agree with you more. It just seemed so insane I assumed my copy was faulty. There is a good chance I’ll pick up another when they come back into stock! Thanks again for you’re review. It was refreshing.
What most people don't understand is that the autofocus will get to the same level as the r5 and r6 with a simple firmware update. It's nothing hardware related, only firmware.
Are you sure it has duo gain ISO? It has duo BASE ISO, but not the former like the C70. The R5C is great in low light though compared to my older R because of the download sampling.
HI! I wanted to ask you how you are with the Anton Bauer battery and which brand of CFEXPRESS and SDXC you use with this RC5 and the capacity. Thank you very much
I set the base iso to 3200 and iso to 3200 in RAW LT (clog 3), in resolve, it is so noisy and switching the RAW from 3200 iso to 2500 makes no difference. Am I missing something?
@@ShoreSummit Oh ok. I shoot on a blackmagic 6k pro but I just got the R5C as a 2nd camera.. I also shoot weddings too and there's no R5C wedding videos on youtube except for yours.
So I've been in the sony ecosystem for a while now. I have the say the a7siii is arguably a wedding filmakers BEST bet for weddings filmaking. Heres a few things i like about it: image quality it does 4k 60 or 120 fps all in 10 bit. 2. Battery life, for a Normal wedding day where I'll walk away with around 200 gbs just off the a7siii I only go through 2 batteries, S-cinetone allows for a much faster workload when it comes to coloring, the colors look AMAZING straight out of camera . For you I could see the downside of needing new lenses because of being pannasonic which I guess would make sense
Definitely and interesting thought. Sony was a contender for us however, canon made the most sense and gives us what we need! Sony is still great but just didn’t check all the boxes we had.
All the stuff you mention about Sony A7siii can also be achieved with R5c and more. Canon colors look much better than Sony. So I don't understand why Sony shooters like forcing Sony on people.
@@nigerian-nightmare personally I couldn't care less what camera they use, of Canon does the job that's cool, but Sony definitely had a comeback with the a7siii as far as colors go. And to be honest clients don't care. I've never had any of my brides as me what camera I shoot on

Would love to see an updated review with the new firmware! Tempted to get this cam
Coming soon! 😉

Great video! Been using mine for weddings since it came out. Came from the R5 and having the EOS Cinema menu is just an upgrade.
It truly makes a difference in the experience with shooting on this camera!
Do you shoot wedding videos? I just upgraded from my R5 to and trying to get use to setting the dials for aperture and shutter speed
3:09 - that is clearly just the Sony lovers whining & exaggerating. The autofocus is still great 👍

Were you using the LP-E6NH battery that came with the camera or an older third party brand battery?
@@csound55 I have 4 LPE6NH batteries from my R5 and R6 but this was the new one supplied with the camera.

What lens do you use as your main for r5c
Great video. Why not buy the C70?
at the time is was just about the All-In cost. I also wanted a smaller setup that would fit into a smaller case
The canon r5 going as low of 2500 dollars right on adorama you think it’s worth buying for videography in 2024?
great review
What are your ideal codec and quality settings? I just got my r5c
What picture profile you using at weddings ? Outdoor and indoor ?
Thank you!
How have you found not having ibis? Have you been using it on a gimbal mostly for weddings?
Greetings!
how to avoid lens noise - focusing.

Unfortunately I don’t have much experience with camcorders at weddings.
Dead to be honest

clog 3 is crap...on a "cinema" camera?
