    In the old days black and silver camera bodies were common. All black bodies were the top of the line pro bodies. It was a status symbol. It was desirable. I think the manufactures are still of the same mindset.

    • @sebastianmatthews1663
      @sebastianmatthews1663 3 года назад +4

      It's not just manufacturers who think that way, sadly. I gave up using Fuji for pro work because I had a handful of (entirely separate) clients make comments to the effect of not trusting my work if I was using a camera that didn't look 'professional' i.e. a big all-black brick. In one case a client on location literally said "oh... is _that_ your camera? Really?" to my face when I pulled out a silver X-T3 and X100F, continued to sneer for the entire time, and then I later learnt they had hired another photographer (who happens to be my friend, which the client didn't know) to reshoot the same job _before they'd even seen my photos_ and apparently spent several minutes of the reshoot complaining about me and my 'hipster' 'amateur' gear. Yes, that particular client was an asshole and yes the others weren't much better, but still the end result was that the nice-looking, stylish, silver cameras cost me work.
      Never had that trouble when I shot with Canon or Sony before then. Didn't have that problem when I used the all-black chunky Fuji X-H1. Never had that problem since switching back to Canon.

    To get over a sticky eye AF I find having the AF on button set to eye AF, the AE Lock button set as my normal focusing method (selected using the lens or lens adapter ring) and AF Point Selection button set as spot gives me great flexibility. If I find the eye AF sticking a quick jab on the spot AF (AF Point Selection) on the eye then resume eye AF. Works every time. The eye AF then locks the on to the subject.This set up allows me to shoot one handed as all the controls I need are buttons on the right grip top and right rear of the camera. After trying many differing configurations over the last 6 months it's the one I've settled on. Take 2 SD cards with you Chelsea. They're not expensive.

    There are lots of ways to save battery life without loosing performance. Setting up the LCD so that most of the time you keep it closed with the screen protected means it’s off and doesn’t drain the battery. Having the EVF set to turn off after 30s and turn on when you bring your eye to it means even more saving. Utilising the ability to have different screen modes that you can change with the info button helps. You can set the LCD so that when it is flipped out the EVF is turned off. That means that you are only using one screen at any time again saving battery. If you then turn the screen around and have it facing outwards but flush with the body both the LCD & the EVF work. This works well.

    R5 is one of the best looking mirrorless cameras imo and RF 24-70/2.8 is a total beauty. If you want a rangefinder, go and buy one. I do like M6 II silver too, but those are different cameras for different purposes imo, especially when you need them to combine with certain lenses. 750 shots on a half charged battery is imo quite decent for what the R5 is. As for the AF, we use similar setup - we have initial point for AF set to the middle option, definitely not the Auto, or you have no chance influence, what the camera focuses to. I call it - focus & recompose reborn. Also - we've got AF-ON button set to Eye AF, which works as a backup even in a Single focus AF, * set to Servo on/off and Focus selection set to instant switch between the modes - we use just two - Eye / face tracking and Single point. Works quite well for us.

    Chelsea, I have the R6. Another work around for that sticky AF is that you can click the joystick in and it'll make it look at picking something closer to the centre frame. If you have an eye near the middle when you do this it's pretty good at resetting and locking onto what you want.

    Great video Chelsa but you missed to mention 1 flaw of the R5...
    Test this one out:
    On electronic shutter... it only has 2 rates of fire... ONE SHOT... and 20 FPS Burst... nothing in between... the other burst speed options do nothing.
    Its super annoying when you are shooting on a Film Set, doing backstage and to keep it silent, select Electronic Shutter and the camera goes wild with the burst filling your memory card in a few minutes. Thats a flaw, we should be able to select 10fps or 5fps.. but it only goes 20fps no matter what.

    • @stevemurnan1702
      @stevemurnan1702 3 года назад

      That's hardly a flaw. That's a spec you don't like but not a flaw as the R5 performs to it's spec just like the video capability. The SD lock up sounds like a flaw although in 7 months I've only had one instance of this happening.

    I have R5 and R6 since October 2020 and I slaughtered them to test them. Ceremonies, glamorous shots and sports. I must say that in terms of cards I have never had problems, both Cfexpress and SD with brands like Lexar and Manfrotto. Any canon in the last 20 years has never given me problems reading the cards and formatting them in the room, without going to remove and put back in another room. Do we know how to use the menus? AF is great and with the life of the new LP-E6NH battery I got up to 3450 shots per burst on two occasions. I believe your battery still needs to have full charge cycles to work well, otherwise you have to change it.

    As recommended by the manufacturers, I format my memory cards every single time I put them into a camera-Canons, Nikons, Panasonics, Sonys. I've never had a camera seize up at all in more than 25 years shooting, whether from lens issues or memory card issues. Maybe you should plan to format your cards with each insertion as well? Battery life? R5+2 batteries in the vertical grip, 50-54 degrees Fahrenheit ambient temperature, Servo AF for every shot, I took 996 photos over the course of 5.5 hours (switching the camera off between uses) with 62% charge remaining on battery 1 (the new battery) and 58% on battery 2 (the battery that came with the EOS R). Virtually no chimping.

Power output decreases at a faster rate when battery is low, so once it’s started to get low it gets lower faster! Love the hair style by the way! Martyn

  • @hasithasamarajeewa5453
    @hasithasamarajeewa5453 3 года назад +3

    @Chelsea, I feel the battery life issues are from poor software/OS implementations. I’m coming from a 5dm4 and use super-tele primes for wildlife and BIF, so my observations are relative to my 5dm4. I’ve seen some of these mentioned on online forums, but not a whole lot.
    I feel the IS(and IBIS) software implementation is poor. The camera is continuously running both body and lens stabilization, when I’m not ready or waiting to take pictures...and even when I put the camera down. This is probably using up a lot of battery. They should have implemented something similar to DSLRs. On the 5dm4, IS only comes on when I’m metering, and IS stops a couple of seconds after metering stops.
    Also, when I’m walking around with the gear, most of the time, the power-saving timers don’t seem to work. Maybe the evf sensors is getting triggered....I haven’t been able to nail down the cause yet. Soooo......I’m walking around, for a couple of hours in woodlands looking for birds, with the screens and IS+IBIS running the whole time (plus the IS rattle....uggghh). It doesn’t make sense. I had to dedicate the light bulb button to “display off” to put the camera to sleep, and remember to press it when I’m done shooting.
    Also also, they should’ve implemented an option in “screen/viewfinder display” to mimic a DSLR. Meaning an option, “evf for shooting only and screen for image review only”. And if you turn off image review time, the screen would be always be off, until I press the playback button. This is how I have the 5dm4 setup, which saves a ton of battery because the back screen is off, almost all of the time (I don’t use Q menus).
    The software/OS/UI implementation is, in some cases, so different from my DSLR, which I’m guessing is geared towards “videographicists”.
    On memory cards, look into the boot/wake time variation from card to card. Some cards take longer to boot/wake. Since you are using both card slots, maybe disparities in the boot/wake times are causing the crashes. Maybe try a bunch of cards individually, write down the boot/wake times, then use the two cards with the largest time difference, and see if you can recreate the problems. I have a suspicion it has something to do with the times.
    Overall, the r5 is an epic camera, mostly due to the AF and 20fps. Would’ve needed a lot of luck on my 5dm4 to match shots from the r5. Having said that, I prefer my 5dm4 for the ergonomics, feel, OS, and general usability over the r5. 5dm4 body with an r5 sensor......one can only dream.

  • @tomacquilano1304
    @tomacquilano1304 9 месяцев назад

    Maybe add this to your flaw list! I bought the R5 yesterday. Got it set up and tried it out today on some sea gulls. Main issue is the start up lag time of the electronic viewfinder. What I mean is when you quickly raise the camera to shoot something, there is such a delay in the viewfinder coming to life that you miss the shot. So, let's say you're shooting sports and moving to another spot or just not much happening in front of you. Then you see something about to come into play. You quickly raise the camera to your eye and all you see is black for a split second until it lights up. But in that split second, you missed the shot. In shooting my 1DX or any DSLR, this is never a problem. Very frustrating. It doesn't look like you can keep the viewfinder on either. Not that I would want to because of battery drain. Now what? I also noticed the issue right away with the eye focus and set up two back buttons. Great video! Thank You! BTW, you are so adorable!

    yes I’ve only had my R5 for a couple of weeks, I prefer to use the VF rather than the LCD screen because of sun glare. So any problems have to be resolved by button pressing. For example the green square ends up in the corner, I press the focus mode button and then press the joystick to centre it.
    When the camera goes to sleep, I can’t see anything compared to the optical DSLR. (EOS 5D mk III).
    I’m considering the two button focussing method but need to learn more before changing the default settings.

    I had to smile about your 2nd quirk: the Autofocus. I was shooting gannets and the camera animal eye autofocus decided to lock onto the anal regions of a bird. I kept resetting the focus point, but like a moth to the flame, it went back to the back. I had to speak to the camera severely! It adds a whole new meaning to the concept of shooting the moon... Quirk #3: I use a battery grip and I prefer that for the ergonomics as well as the battery life. Doing some fine tuning of the display settings makes a bit of a difference. Quirk #5: I am happy with black, it makes the camera to look the same as any other camera - ok for some, not so much for others.
    As I shoot across a bunch of subjects, I have configurations assigned to C1-3 on the dial. C1 is for animals, C2 is people, C3 is landscape.

    Button assignment suggestion:
    AF-on: AF tracking, preselected box (eye af on)
    AEL: eye AF
    DOF botton: press it to override and camera reverts to single point AF
    For wild life this is fast, versatile. If general eye AF doesn’t work, you move to putting the box over the animal, and that works 99% of the time. Move onto single AF for small birds in the brush type scenario

    In muy use i found that the camera and lens stabilizer engage every time you press a button, ANY BUTTON, not only the shutter or focus buttons (that’s when it should engage, only). Also the lack of wb, iso, metering mode/white balance buttons, the lack of gps, etc are things I missed a lot. After using the R5 I decided to buy a 5d iv. I miss the higher resolution but for the rest I’m quite happy with it.

My question is do I go for the canon r5 for the megapixels? I never shoot video so would a r6 be more practical? I want this to be my nice investment so I can enjoy my retirement. Photography is a sort of therapy for me and I love getting out into nature to appreciate the beauty of it. What would you choose if you were in my position?

    I've had that problem with the SD Cards (Song Tough and Sandisk Extreme Pro Cards) on both the R5 and R6, doesn't happen all the time, but I agree, it fixes once I reformat the card. Some issue there. I also have a C70 Cinema camera that takes SD cards and when I stick it into that camera, I never get an issue with the same cards. So it's definitely a glitch on the R5/R6 software, not actual hardware.

    I had the issue a few times with the R5 freezing on me when i used the SD card. In my case taking the battery out to restart the camera was sufficient without having to reformat. Another issue that i have found is the camera slowing down and not tracking AF as well if the battery are at less than 50% power going from around 12 frames per second to about 5 or 6 frames per second.

    I had a similar problem with an 128GB Lexar UHS II card on Canon 80D, 90D & 5D Mark IV. I used JPEGMini Pro to compress my JPEGs and save space on my computer. Sometimes I’d do that directly on the SD card instead of the computer. I never had a problem doing that on a Sandisk Extreme Pro (32GB, 64GB &128GB) except with this Lexar. It would take about 30 minutes to empty the buffer! Depending on how many photos I had compressed, it would take more shots stored at that ridiculously slow speed before starting to write fast again. As if the camera was performing defragmentation on the card and moving files around on this specific card would take forever. The red “writing to card” LED would be on the whole time and after a couple of minutes when one photo would be written I could take another one. Formatting the card after letting the camera to finish writing would make it work normally again. I simply don’t touch the files on that SD card anymore.

    In regards to battery life, it is heavily dependant on settings. I found out with my previous cameras, the canon M6 / M6 Mark II, I could get over 2000 images with a manual focus lens. There was a feature with AF lenses, I like a lot, but drained the battery quite fast and this is "Continues AF". This feature is in general great, but it will move your lenses a lot. Another feature is the power saving function. If you don't mind a minor inconvinience, just put it to the lowest settings. Just one more thing to remember with low power saving settings, restore them to a good duration, when you're trying to get images of your camera. Otherwise you'll end up with a camera shut down during an image transfer.

      This used to happen commonly on point 'n' shoot cameras. If you took a card out of one camera and put it in another, without formatting first. I think the issue then was something to do with how different cameras indexed their images. The second camera knew there were files (images) on the card, but didn't know how to address/access them.
      I had a camera whose handbook actually said SD cards must be formatted if containing images from a different camera.

Then, the other custom button to activate eye focus. Thus, inside the settings where it has where eye focus to be prioritize, I set it to where I have my spot focus. So, work best for me since I can easily choose if I want to do eye focus or normal without even changing in the menu. 3) Style wise, haha I do agree but then, Canon camera ergonomic wise is superb.. just the style :P. 4) Versatility.. yup.. give a lot of points even with the video. 5) Lense.. unfortunately, I can't afford them :( Waiting on Sigma Art version, then I can smile crazily.

    I have prograde for both SD and CFExpress type b and not once have I experienced the lockups. But I have experience the autofocus locking on something I don’t want so it is frustrating I hope a firmware fixes. I’m not doing a feature length film so the 30min doesn’t bother me per se but can you elaborate what you meant Chelsea? About the 30 min being a law???
    As for aesthetics sure what Leica does is cool but I think the look of the R5 is great. But more than that I like the look of the L lenses. I love love LOVE ❤️ the red band on the L series. I really don’t get why Nikkor dropped the gold band on the Z mounts. And it might be petty but it was a consideration going to Canon.
    So I’m very very happy with my R5 purchase. But had I waited since I wasn’t in immediate need I might have bought the R5c edition. If only for the ability in shooting longer without heat being an issue especially it being summer soon don’t want those hot 30° plus days affecting it too. And I can’t say I’ve even shot once yet but I like the option there and it being larger the idea using CPS or something to mod it is close to nil. Oh well. It’s still a nearly perfect camera and I just wish it came with GPS like the DSLR older sibling has. There is no reason and I’d rather not use my mobile I forget do use nor take up hot shoe with an accessory.

    I had a similar issue on first firmware with my CFExpress card - haven’t had it since updated from 1.0 - I have my SET button custom to pull focus to the centre of the frame - my usual fix if the AF sticks to something I don’t want in focus (don’t need to change focus mode) ... the 30 min limit annoys me in theory, but realistically I will never hit that 30 min limit ... one thing that doesn’t annoy me is if you fill up your SD card the camera blocks you from switching the card you are seeing.., so you have to take out the non-full card... and then you will see the card that is full.. and then you can delete, and the. Put back in the other card

That BEAUTIFUL, USEABLE design is pace setting genius. I pray Canon does not listen to your concern literally. The Leica design is a throwback that is neither pleasing nor ergonomic. What I think we should ask of Canon, Nikon, and Sony alike is more in camera intelligence like we see in smart phones. They have done a great job on autofocus but can do more. Example, merging multiple shots into single shots in camera and other creative capabilities will reach a larger, average shooter market.
