    Funny enough despite being one of the most successful fire emblem game Awakening wasn't exactly a perfect piece of software. The story in particular was one of it's weakest aspects so much like with Fates I felt the need to offer up my own perspective on how to improve it.

    As interesting as all this sounds, my problem is that Emmeryn's sacrifice was what changed Chrom for the better, so turning him into his father would make him seem like an over-emotional idiot instead of the one who heeds the advice of his friend. The way I'd improve it is to simply throw more hardships at the heroes rather than turn them into sociopaths. For instance, why not instead of the whole "Evil Robin from the Future" thing, give Robin a twin that Future Grima possesses, giving Robin a moral dilemma similar to Lucina's (Especially if FemRobin marries Chrom) While I understand where you are coming from, your "Chrom the Prince of Vengence" sounds like Character Assassination to me.

      Not necessarily. See, in the Drama CDs, Chrom actually WAS turning into his father. He absolutely hated Plegia, said that Plegia has always been in the wrong, and when Robin spoke against him, he got angry at her. This was only subverted because:
      1) Robin got stricken with a fatal illness.
      2) Chrom and the others got into a dangerous situation where they were fighting for their lives to find the cure.
      3) Thanks to a spell from someone, Chrom and the others heard Robin's pleas and worries about death and how she wants to keep supporting them.
      Afterwards, Robin and Chrom had a serious talk and got him out of it. Had Chrom not had the above things happen, Chrom would never have listened to him, because the above is what helped Chrom calm down.

    Y'know what might have been interesting? A reveal that Chrom's father waged war on Plegia not because of greed or power lust, but because he knew (be it by prophecy, a soothsayer, or just by being really good at reading old books) that Grima's reincarnation was at hand, and he was trying to find and kill the Heart before it could succeed. He failed, of course. And went down in history as the most monstrous Exalt to have lived because of it.
    I dunno. Something Validar could throw out to mock Chrom at some point. A revelation that he has misjudged and hated his father for actions that were cruel and unjust, but born from good intentions.

      My theory on why Chrom's Father declared war on Plegia is because he tried to force the Faith of Naga down on the Plegians throats when they just wanted to worship Grima. Chrom's Father took that as an offense and declared on the Plegians, branding them as heretics. After Plegia lost the war, the people were subjected to such ridicule as the People of Ylisse called them heathens, sinners in the eyes of Naga. The Plegians swore that they would be the heretics Ylisse branded them. So that might be the reason why the cult is so hell bent on bringing Grima back, is to make Ylisse for all of the years of discrimination they have shown them.

    Things I wished Awakening would expand on:
    - What exactly did the previous Exalt do to Plegia to have them hate Ylisse so much?
    - How does time travel even work in this universe?
    - How did Gangrel, Walhart, Aversa, and Emmeryn survive?
    - Who is Grima and where did he come from? (I know they answered this in Echoes but it would've been nice if it was in the main story)

    • @saltystick_99

      I always imagine/interpreted Grima as Medeus being resurrected way too many times and becoming more decayed because of it. Seriously, make first Exalt to Marth and say Grima is Medeus and would it at all change the timeline? Medeus even says he'll find a way to come back as long as evil exist, and Grima is regarded as one of the more evil Fire Emblem villains. Not to mention, Grima has a lot of Earth Dragon in him apparently.

    IMO Awakening is a great game the first time you play it because you won’t notice details that will make you say this story sucks. the first time you’ll see everything perfect, good characters, good gameplay, great story, the marriage system is fun, supports are great. But when you play Awakening a second time you’ll begin to noticed things that are stupid in the story. it’s the perfect game for newcomers because it will leave a good impression.
    Also, if you’ve known FE before Awakening you will notice that the story it’s bad because you’ll compare it with the older games.
    The story is not bad but it’s not perfect

      Wolfox it does have a certain charm to it doesn’t it? I enjoyed the story all right despite it not being as good as some past stories, a few of the characters were bad (Kellam in particular just annoys the crap out of me-he’s probably the most pointless character in the game and only exists for a joke) and the balance was way off but I still really enjoyed the game.

      Strangely enough, even though I can recognise that the balance is busted and that the story is weak (not bad, there are far worse FE stories, but certainly weak). I started with Shadow Dragon(probably not the best choice in terms of FE games, but eh...), and only really got into the franchise with Awakening. And say what you will about the balance, but I quite enjoy reaching the Endgame and being able to take it all on with just one unit+obligatory lord. The story isn’t great, but you are correct that it’s story isn’t grand and that the characters, even inside some of their supports, are lacking.
      Still love it, it’s just infectious somehow.

    I really like your idea of using Paralogue chapters with Robin and side characters at the front with Chrom and Lucina elsewhere. That would be an excellent idea to give those characters more space and allow for more world-building. Not to mention giving Robin a role that doesn't hinder the story.
    As for your Chrom idea...hmm....I think some aspects could work, but perhaps make him more of a middleground, like a somewhat more aggressive Hector or something. He definitely needed more character growth that's for sure, but a warmonger might be a little too far. I think taking the kind of person Hector was might be at least a good starting ground for Chrom.

  • @HugeBigMan
    @HugeBigMan 6 лет назад +156

    I feel like the story would've been way better if Robin didn't have amnesia and we could hear about his backstory, like how it was growing up with Validar as a dad and who his mother was and what she was like, and maybe have Tharja and Henry be his childhood friends, which would explain Tharja's obsession with Robin a little bit more and I just really love Henry sooo. Also this way there'd be an interesting dynamic between his loyalty to his country and his love for the shepards (who I'm sure he'd learn to love after spending time with them even while feeling the effects of the last exalt's war on plegia growing up).
    I know people think Robin has too much of the spotlight already though so this is probably not a very popular opinion ;__;
    Game should've just been 20 chapters longer so they could get into all of this stuff and not have it feel rushed, and lots more paralogues.
    ALSO, I don't get why people think avatar characters should be bland so you can "insert" yourself into them, the character still has a set personality and (basically) set choices in his/her life so I just don't get it. should've just made Robin an actual character, not an avatar if people really feel that way. I love his default design anyway. and this way he could actually kind of be the main lord since he technically IS the crown prince of Plegia with Validar as king right?
    Okay im done now I swear

      That actually would have been a cool development. I think it would work better if the memories slowly came back to him after he had been fighting with them for a while though, that way he still feels torn. If he remembered everything from the beginning, even if Validar was the world's worst father he would still feel the desire to fight for his friends and his country. By allowing him to develop those strings to the other side before returning the relationships from his childhood would make it more interesting to see that inner dilemma. So yeah, wish they would have done that.

    • @HugeBigMan

      @Kage-pm6qi 6 лет назад +11

      Oilkey to answer your rant about why Avatars need to be bland and have no character, it's because by definition Avatars aren't characters they are supposed to be inserts that you decide every aspect about them, as it is Robin is a poor Avatar because they have too much decided for them already. You are correct the story and character writing would have been better if Robin wasn't a half avatar but an developed character with actual deserved impact instead of usurping the spotlight near the end of the game.

    @thesparduck117 6 лет назад +43

    Most of my changes you already stated but here are a few.
    I'd give robin dialogue choice in supports and missions as to make robin a true reflection of yourself.
    I'd also have a few different missions based on choices, with different results. I'd have robin either form a team to escort Emmeryn back home and they get captured resulting in a few missions with Robin trying to break them out and unlocking Phila, but giving Valm part of Pelgia in act II. or they can leave Emmeryn unescorted and gain an new Knight unit in the process, but it gives Valm a few territories in Ferox as a result of Chrom's invasion.
    Another choice would be allow Validar to travel with Robin since he's his father, and you gain a powerful wizard, and robin's power grows, but Grima becomes more difficult. The other option for this one is allow Adversa to travel with you. Her memories reawaken and she steals the fire emblem (to keep it from Validar) resulting in her death.
    Give Walhart Alm's Falchion and play up his crusade against Plegia out of fear of grima(which he discovered through his ancestor Alm's diary that the creature in Theabes was the same fell dragon that nearly killed the world), and you have the option to spare Walhart and get another Falchion user. If he dies, you can recruit Pheros.
    Final change(beyond yours) have Morgan be in the plot, make him be a way to kill Grima without losing Robin(or him), maybe have Validar be manipulating him, and if he/she has the Exalted blood let him use a Falchion.

    Hmmmmmmm......
    Have to disagree with you on Chrom becoming a revenge fuelled , bloodthirsty war mongerer like his father.
    Yeah it would make for a more darker story, but I don’t think it would show Chrom favourably as a character. He could possibly become one of the more hated lords in a different way, kind of like how people feel about Xander from Fates Birthright. It makes him very over emotional and there is only so much the audience could take before Chrom becomes irredeemable.
    I feel the point of that arch is to show Plegia that Ylisse has truly changed, that they are better than the generation that came before. If Chrom becomes exactly like his dad and goes on a rampage then he is only proving Gangrel right. And I think it would hinder Emmeryn’s sacrifice, not enhance it.
    Plegian soldiers are touched by her death, they are inspired by it. To put away the past and try for peace not war. If Chrom goes on a rampage, sacrificing innocents then that message would go out of the window since now the Plegians have a new Ylissean figure to hate.
    Yeah he’s distraught that his sister is dead and you see that in the game. But with the help of all his loved ones and friends he finds strength again to confront Gangrel. He does not forgive him, since he is not like his sister, instead he strives to become someone better than his father. That is his revenge against Gangrel. By not surrendering to hate and becoming what Gangrel thinks of him. And I think it is better that he realises this before he goes off on a blood thirsty rampage instead of after.
    Plus, I cannot imagine Robin or Lissa being “too grief stricken” to talk to Chrom about how much of a douche he’s become.
    That’s my two cents. I agree with most of your other points, especially sacrificing the Valm arch to make the other two feel more fleshed out. But I don’t agree on this one.

      You realize the that one of the best ways to develope a character is to show them at there worst? A character needs to mess up to really shine later on, and to learn from there mistakes. Plus Chrom's turn as a revenge fueled beast would not be permanant, but a part of his arc the game acknoledges is a bad thing.

    It took me a long time to keep my personal feelings out of this and to give this particular a chance. While I can genuinely say I respect the ideas and opinions expressed in this video and can tell a lot of work was put into it, I definitely disagree with many of the ideas and changes espoused. I could make a video of almost equal length if I tried to get everything I was thinking about out in the open, but I do have at least one major point of contention that I want to address. If anyone reads this, you'll understand why I only chose to focus on one point of many.
    Chrom - While I certainly respect the idea of giving him a darker story and character, I think that fundamentally changes him as a character for the worse. Being justifiably upset at the murder of one's sibling and then going on a quest for revenge, actually seems like the natural progression of a character arc, not a unique one. What I find interesting about Chrom in the first place is that he is a leader who not only does not want to lead, he does not feel like he is capable enough to lead. Awakening's 3 part story actually clearly communicates to me a three tier arc for Chrom's character; he goes from Chrom the Knight in Part 1 to Chrom the Leader in Part 2, to Chrom the Hero in Part 3.
    Chrom honestly acts like a servant in Part 1 doing what he feels is right or just but he usually only reacts, never thinks. He is admittedly terrible at diplomacy and only really knows how to serve as a knight on the battlefield. Nevertheless he still has a kind and caring heart and can understand where his country had failed in the past. After Em's death and Chrom becomes the leader of Ylisse, Chrom is at first distraught, because he does not view himself as worthy of his sister's ideals and feels he could not live up to her legacy because he sees himself as inferior. It is only through the support of his friends and allies around him that he gains the strength and confidence to trust his ideals, becoming the capable leader who is able to defeat Plegia and establish peace that everyone believed he could be.
    In Part 2, Chrom becomes an active leader, assessing the situation with Valm, understanding the need for diplomacy among his allies in order to combat Walhart's looming threat, and trusting his advisors and friends for military strategy and advice. His ideals of what makes a strong leader clash with the ideals of Walhart and their struggle comes to embody the conflict between two different ways of viewing strength.
    In Part 3, Chrom again evolves from effective leader to a hero who makes and decides his own destiny. Despite being shown was is foretold to happen, Chrom does not waver as he did in the past after his sister's sacrifice. He holds fast to his belief that the bonds he has with his friends will allow them to defeat destiny. He restores Lucina's hope that the future is not written. Chrom at this point is a man who has seen the impossible happen (Future children coming from the past). He knows that events can and have been changed for the better (the saving of Basilio). Chrom becomes a true hero who embodies these ideals, acting and fighting with confidence and conviction.
    While I feel Chrom could have taken the path of the leader who follows his passions, makes mistakes, and learns from them, I would argue that they would fundamentally change and conflict with the overall theme of Awakening, that destiny is not written, that one can only truly be strong when he or she stands with others, and that a hero is someone who acts because he believes in those that believe in him.

    How to improve Awakening: make it like Genealogy of War. No time travel. The main character becomes Grima in the end of the first era, then you end up playing as the children afterwards in order to slay Grima in their timeline with Lucina taking Chrom's place, and Morgan as the new tactician.

    how to fix awakening:
    1.skip the valm arc
    2.make emmeryn an actual character rather than a plot device
    3.explain why the gemstones are missing
    4.if you have the gemstones missing dont let a dragon that is implied to have been awake for several years join chrom
    5.explain the origins of grima and his cult(alternatively just replace him with loptyr or medeus)
    6.make the main villians be actually competent
    7.properly explain how time travel works
    8.actually explore gangrels backstory

    Personally I wouldn't say Awakenings story is bad, it's just very.. safe? I guess they did it because the series was more or less about to enter Kid Icarus/Metroid/etc status and be forgotten about for (insert years here). As much as it has flaws, I will take the story, characters and everything it has and thank it for saving one of my favourite Nintendo series. Fire Emblem, you may not have the story down like you used too, and the characters can be a little.. anyway.. But you're still the fun FE Gameplay I know and love (minus pair ups)

      My main problem with awakenings story is that it's 90% a wild goose chase, the entire plot with the fire emblem and Falchion is all meaningless when it's revealed that only robin can truly end Grima. The only relevant chapters in the story are 1-12 and then the final like, 3 chapters. Everything else does nothing in the long run.

    Hey Blazing Knight, you know your idea of having Chrom becoming a vengeful Prince, seeking revenge on Plegia was kinda explored by the drama CDs or to be more specific the FRobin drama cds, which take place after Emmeryn's death, and covers the group escaping Plegia.
    At the start, Chrom is filled with rage and refuses to listen to anyone, not even Robin, this results in him noticing Robin's failing health, until she collapses from fever. Long story short Chrom finds out about the medication that can cure her nearby, and sets off with Fredrick, Stahl, and Gaius to get the medicine for her, while Lissa, and Virion look after Robin. While on their journey they get attacked by Plegian soldiers who are still loyal to Gangrel, and they realize that Robin is in trouble, and Chrom starts to worry. When they make it back to their shelter where Robin was, they find her Lissa and Virion gone, and Chrom nearly breaks down. Turns out that the Plegian villagers found Robin and others and not caring who they were or where they came from gave them food and shelter. They then give Robin the medicine and she gets better.
    The whole event results in Chrom both letting go of his hatred towards Plegians, vowing to never become like his father, and to protect Robin, as the thought of losing her genuinely scares him. The whole thing really did develop Chrom's character, as well as really did hit the point home about Chrom and Robin's relationship, as well as give a reason for why Henry chooses to join Chrom's. The only problem with it is really integrating MRobin into it since the undertones between Chrom and FRobin relationship particularly towards the end of the drama CD was kinda romantic.

    • @brightlight8852
      @brightlight8852 6 лет назад +2

      The reason why I say it's hard, is mostly because of the way how Chrom and FRobin speak to and treat each other. It's kind of hard to imagine Chrom and MRobin walking around holding hands.

      This sounds amazing!
      I vastly prefer this over BlazingKnights suggestion about Chrom’s character.
      He emotionally overcomes his hatred towards Plegians in a meaningful way without turning him into a murderous sociopath.
      I must find this drama CD!

    • @brightlight8852
      @brightlight8852 6 лет назад

      darknessknows1235 Well the whole point of it all is that Chrom and Robin get closer (they start calling each other their other half), and the bonds between the shepherds deepens through Lucina's intereference.
      It could have been a chapter in the game. But like I said, the story was made with FRobin in mind and it shows with the way the characters treat her, and might not even work with her being the avatar. Since the drama cds treats her more like another character in the story and not the avatar.

    Sounds like the game just needed more chapters, along with most of your suggestions. The reason I say most is because of your ideas for Chrom. They're not bad, but for fire emblem they don't really fit. Chrom to me always felt like a middle ground between Hector and Eliwood (though most of the time he leans towards Hector). In general, most lords in the franchise use their hardships as motivation to better themselves/push forward. Even with that being said, I think your ideas would be awesome to see come to life.
    Also, am I the only one who thought Walhart was closer to Ashnard than Gangrel? Design aside, they both seemed to harbor similar ideals of strength and power being what matters most (that's just how I saw it).

    I'm a little torn on the avatar character being in a supportive role. I understand your points about robin taking away the spotlight from other characters as that was an issue I had as well, but in the meta sense it makes robin feel pointless as his supportive role could easily be filled in by anyone in the game. After all, robin is the player's avatar. Robin's decisions need to feel important to the player. Which is honestly the major problem I have against Awakening.

    • @MrSentinel07
      @MrSentinel07 6 лет назад +17

      Blueblade13 I totally get the whole wanting the avatar to be in a supportive role thing. But I feel that relegating the avatar to a supporting role TOO strongly could be a bad thing as well. You run the risk of turning Robin into just another Kris. And I don't think that many people liked Kris.

    • @brightlight8852
      @brightlight8852 6 лет назад +7

      That Filthy Casual Gamer You don't realize how right you are. Looking back on Awakening the main problem with Robin is that his role is ill-degined. First he's just the observer but then he hijacks the story and becomes the main character. While he does this neither Chrom nor Lucina have completed their character arcs so it comes across as forced, and the in only way to really fix that is to either go one extreme or the other. Make Robin less of a self insert and more of a character, erasing a lot of player input or they could just make Robin an observer but then that just makes Robin come across as pointless.
      If the avatar is so pointless then why should they even exist? That's the reason for why Corrin the avatar from Fates was made into the MC. And no, he isn't Fate's main problem. Fates problem is that it actually desperately needed to have a gray morality. The story should not have inherently treated either side as good or bad, but rather just acknowledged that both sides had an equal number of good and bad people.
      Back to Awakening, player input is what hurts Robin because they have to take player input into account he can't really be defined.

    • @0axis771
      @0axis771 6 лет назад +5

      Relegating Robin to a pure supportive role ruins a lot of things. For one thing, Robin is the one that became Grima in the future. The last boss is his evil future version, Validar is Robin's father, who runs the Grimleal cult that is manipulating the events of the story.
      No matter how you go about it, Robin's role cannot be a pure supportive, as then you will need to completely rewrite the premise of the story. Because Robin can't be a pure supportive role when a lot about him is so heavily involved.

    • @matthewheinlen9164
      @matthewheinlen9164 5 лет назад +2

      I kind of view Robin, Lucina and Chrom kind of like Lyn Eliwood and Hector from Blazing Sword-it had three lords, three main characters. The body of the game was about Eliwood, but the other two had important roles to play, input in plot elements, and had a time to shine-admittedly Lyn’s was mostly in her own story.
      That being said I feel like Awakening had less balance between the three protagonists, and I agree that they could have gone whole hog and turned Robin into a full character, and it probably wouldn’t have hurt the story at all.

    I like how you brought in all three conflicts coming together, with Plegia and Ylisse having the problem, Valm arriving in, all while Validar, Aversa, and Grima are manipulating everything from behind the scenes. I like that even Grima can show being a very cunning and manipulative being that has had a hand through the conflicts the entire time, always making sure to set things up to force things to play out in his benefit. And this also connects with what Chrom's father did, as his reasoning is what led to so many conflicts to arise.
    I believe that Grima can also have another reason as to return to the past. If we go by that he knew of the fact that time travel was possible, but we go by multiverse theories, Grima might have realized that if he merges with Robin, combining the two Grima of two timelines, Grima discovered that this would allow Grima to gain the powers of time and space, allowing him to cross to different realms with no effort any longer. And possibly also have the power to finally end Naga.
    Though another thing I wanna point out is how there's a key part of worldbuilding that you didn't mention in that you very little mentioned the First Exalt, who is literally the figure in the time that altered how the world works, bringing out the Branded bloodline, Naga coming back, Falchion used to seal Grima, etc.

    19:24 here’s another interesting idea.
    If grima was really being controlled by a dark force, perhaps the sins of humanity over the ages, but robin is basically the reincarnation of the last chunk of good left in his heart.
    Personally, tiki would be more suspicious of this, but would soon learn the connection that grima went berserk because of humanity’s sins, and keeping him sealed longer is the only way to restore his humanity he lost because of that.
    Honestly, if you got the dlc characters from past games , grima should just use robin to resurrect them.
    Hell, in chapter nine, it’d be epic if say, robin awakens to grima rage when the risen are summoned by aversa, and he promotes to a dark Druid from the gba games, then goes ham on every risen.
    A few ideas embracing the “grima was a good guy turned bad by the sins of humans”:
    The Grimeal were never bad to begin with, but the devastation past grima caused was so bad, they weren’t killed, but their ideas were struck down.
    In terms of gameplay, robin would ride around atop grima, and be a class called: “fell rider”
    Have valm know the truth about grima, but not until you beat them.
    When it comes to the child units, have grima feel guilty and insecure around them, and in supports robin has with them, he’s often noted as hiding away from them for fear of being attacked.
    Maybe grima and naga could be siblings?
    Rather than chrom going crazy when emm dies, he’s disheartened, but when grima tells stories that he actually played with Marth when he was younger, before he had been turned into an evil beast, showing that the connection he has with the hero kings family is powerful.
    When it comes to plegia, he blames himself for this war, as the cult that worshipped him had been centralized in plegia, and because of that, chroms dad began a brutal crusade on the place.
    The death of emm would instead make Grima mad, instead of chrom, and thus, grima nearly became the past him he always dreaded....
    Once more the evil adversary of his elder sister, naga.

  • @matthewmigler1623
    @matthewmigler1623 6 лет назад +4

    One big thing I would change is keeping Lucina as "Marth" for longer in the story. The idea of someone outside of this timeline constantly checking in, and giving warnings is a neat idea. She let the cat out of the bag a bit too soon I feel. You mentioned towards the end of the game, you thought Chrom took a back seat to the plot while Robin and Lucina took the front. The more I've played the game the less relevant I've found Lucina after she reveals who she really is. Once she joins the army, she only mentions how horrible the future is, and how they have to stop it. Yeah thanks Lucina, I think we got the message the first ten times...
    It's not until the moment she threatens Robin where she becomes notable again, otherwise the third act mostly about Robin dealing with Validar's control internally with Chrom trying to help him/her through it while simultaneously dealing with the threat of Grima's return.
    I don't quite agree with all your ideas, but they are well thought out and I respect that greatly.

  • @nahte123456

    I have to be honest, I don't like this story changes. That's not what Awakening's story was about, it was about People and there bonds overcoming hatred and even Gods.
    Sure moral grey and everything, but that's a completely different story, at that point your only using the general characters, and ignoring everything else. Especially with Chrom, he was meant to get angry sure, but always fall back on his friends to stop him, take away that and you just take away the entire reason Chrom exists at all.

    • @MrSentinel07
      @MrSentinel07 6 лет назад +6

      The problem however is that just doing that leaves Chrom with minimal room for character growth.

    • @nahte123456
      @nahte123456 6 лет назад +21

      Oh there can be some small changes, something the supports of both Awakening and Warriors(Olivia comes to mind for Awakening, and Azura Chrom is all about this) is that Chrom is actually kind of introverted, he prefers practice and fighting over talking. We see him from Robin's perspective who's pretty close to Chrom, but on his own Chrom isn't good with people, one-on-one or in big talks.
      That could make some great character growth, if Chrom was having problems making these Bonds he valued so much, and he get's worse after Emmeryn dies, retreating into fighting to get away from it, but having Lucina be born helps snap him out of it for instance.
      I just think trying to make Awakening into the big moral-grey political intrigue of other FE games is missing the point, it would be like trying that for Pokémon or Power Rangers, sure they have some deeper/darker moments and theme's, but that's not the core point of there story.

    • @alancollette7744
      @alancollette7744 6 лет назад +1

      But in the end, I'd rather have an interesting story will well-developed characters. Just because a franchise has a tradition of sticking to a certain mood for its story doesnt mean you cant make a different, more enjoyable experience. The best example i can find is the Paper Mario games. They have very dark stories for mario games, yet fans find them to have much better stories than other mario games (even if most of them barely have a plot), and even many other games. This would also apply to fire emblem awakening. I imagine they made the story the way they did to appeal to as many people as possible, which is understandable. It still doesnt change the fact that the story had more flaws than previous entries in the franchise, and fixing those flaws would make it a far better story though.

    • @nahte123456
      @nahte123456 6 лет назад +6

      Oh I don't argue the story could be better, I think it gets more flak then it deserves, but it could definitely be better. Having said that though there are ways to do that while keeping it the same game, changing things to Blazing's version, you might as well just make an entire new game for all that it relates to Awakening.

    Dear Blazing Knight, this was a really insightful video you made. While I may not agree with all the changes you proposed you have given me some great ideas on how Awakenings story could be improved. In my free time I have been trying to improve Fire Emblem Fates: Conquests story. I absolutely love the game but I wanted to do my best to bring out what is potentially an amazing game. Thankfully this video has inspired me to see what I could do to bring out the best in Awakening. Also personal opinion coming up, I have no problem with the marriage system and I can understand that it may need to be approached in more mature way for future installments, but I do not know why people have to whinge about it being “fan service rubbish” since marriage has been in Fire Emblem for a long time. Sorry for the small rant there, it is just something that makes me upset about the Fire Emblem Community, where they can come across as completely hostile for such a small feature.

      Chan Ellis Well this situation is more of a 2 way street, because apparently if anyone dares point out flaws in Awakening and Fates, they immediately get labeled as an elitist, and if anyone says that Awakening and Fates are the best in the franchise, then they get called weebs, or other insults. Awakening is good, but I'm not sure if it is the best (definitely better than Birthright and Revelations, but I'm not so sure about Path of Radiance or Blazing Sword).

    • @LeRandomRayquaza2011
      @LeRandomRayquaza2011 6 лет назад +1

      +Aizen2468 Well considering how much Nintendo loves Awakening and Fates over the older games, try putting yourself in the shoes of older players (and even people who play Smash Bros). I'll start with Smash Bros, since it doesn't have much to do with this problem. When Lucina and Robin were first announced for Smash 4, I was kind of excited to see that Lucina was going to be in the game, because she is one of my favorite new characters, and Robin had an interesting play style, with both close range and long range attacks, along with Marth and Ike I was fine, since they were pretty popular before in Melee and Brawl. You want to know who wasn't fine with this? People who wanted Roy. Yes Roy, from Fire Emblem Sword of Seals, an old Fire Emblem game. We eventually did get Roy, but you know what? Marth, Lucina, and Roy have the same move set, but different damage priority (where the most damage comes from, with Marth it is the tip of the sword, Lucina the whole sword and Roy is the hilt of the sword). Then we have Corrin as DLC (with tip priority)... Great another Fire Emblem sword character, as if some of us weren't planning on buying Fates in the first place, Nintendo had to make sure that they advertise their new game by making another Fire Emblem sword character. Yeah Nintendo, plug in your new game in there why don't you, I mean I was already planning on buying Fates in the first place, and when Corrin was first released they were kind of hard to deal with. Corrin's neutral special stuns on contact, and their side special pins players, a charged smash attack does the most damage from the tip, and has ridiculous range, and Corrin probably has the strongest counter in the game next to Shulk. Then there is Robin during team matches with team attack not turned on. Just camp, charge Thoron, shoot, and repeat (unless if there is someone on the other team with a reflector).
      Then we have Fire Emblem Heroes, the new Fire Emblem mobile game that a fraction of the players who started at the beginning have dropped the game. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so here are two discussion threads on Reddit for the same image of the different characters that got special costumes in Fire Emblem Heroes:
      www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/7mxbc3/truly_a_celebration_of_the_entire_franchise/
      www.reddit.com/r/FireEmblemHeroes/comments/7n3ds8/truly_a_celebration_of_the_entire_franchise_xpost/
      Fire Emblem 13 and 14 (Awakening and Fates have 31 characters with special costumes- Awakening has 16, and Fates has 15). Meanwhile Fire Emblem 1 THROUGH 12 ONLY HAVE 5 special costume characters, and that is only because Roy, Ike and Lyn were voted the most popular during the "Choose Your Legends" voting event before the game was released. We can clearly see the favoritism Nintendo and Intelligent Systems has towards Awakening and Fates, considering those games probably made the most money for them.
      Finally we have the latest (and hopefully it has died down by now, until the next DLC is announced) controversy in the Fire Emblem community :Fire Emblem Warriors. At first I was excited to see a Fire Emblem Warriors themed game, since for some reason I love the hack and slash gameplay of Dynasty Warriors games, and Fire Emblem! But then over time we saw that again Nintendo favors the newer players over the older players (my guess is that since Awakening and Fates made them so much money, it would be safe to make a game just for the newer characters). You can already guess the disappointment that was brought up, and as last minute damage control they added Lyn and Celica to the game (as unlocks when you complete the game, so they were not part of the story). The new DLCs are only for characters in the game, with Fates already released last month, and Shadow Dragon coming out next month, followed by Awakening in March. Damage control and some rumors have mentioned a sequal if the first Fire Emblem Warriors games sells well, and Higuchi-san said in an interview "If everything goes well and people enjoy the game, it would be great to make a sequel where we could offer many of the other characters that people have been hoping will show up in the game."
      nintendosoup.com/fire-emblem-warriors-developers-want-make-sequel-game-well-received/
      www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/06/feature_we_quiz_the_fire_emblem_warriors_developers_on_characters_game_design_and_more
      I can't find any other sources stating that other Fire Emblem games will make it into the sequal, but all we know is that if Warriors does well, then there will be a sequal.
      So between Smash Bros. plugging Awakening and Fates with Lucina, Robin and Corrin, followed by Warriors only having a roster of Shadow Dragon, Awakening and Fates characters, with rumors of a sequal IF the game sell well, and with Awakening and Fates characters in Heroes getting the most attention with special costumes, this is a reason I'm so upset and so vocal with this situation.

    Yay! Finally the video I requested since the Fixing Fates story is here at last!!!
    I like a lot of the aspects, and Chrom turning more and more into his father is both good and bad. See, even though we would understand, it would be very hard to even be supportive of him if we keep seeing him turn into a demon. If he keeps rejecting help but showing no ounce of improvement, it feels like it won't work out. I agree having consequences would work. However, if Chrom only shows improvement late game, not many people will like him.
    The idea you gave is in fact an idea I had about how to improve Ephraim's character. He was too perfect and everything he does is solid gold. I hated him for it. But I felt that he SHOULD have been consumed by vengeance because of his kingdom's fall and his father's death. But Eirika was meant to help him realize his wrongdoings, reminding him of the good in others.
    Also, there's a bit of an issue with how you depicted Robin. For one thing, he's still amnesiac, his background is still unknown, and he's still supposed to be Grima. For me, I feel you should have also explained a bit of Robin's origins, which I am trying to go with in my fanfic, in that Robin's mother actually was a villager ravaged by Chrom's father, and in despair of losing her home and family, she turned to the Grimleal after they found her.
    And giving Robin a pure supportive role doesn't help if Robin is the ultimate villain in the end. I don't think it's wrong for Robin to keep some form of a main character. Imagine this: Robin is a pure supporter of the story, and for a while, he does only stay there. But as the story progresses on, Robin seeing Chrom having issues and drowning in hatred, and the encounters with the Grimleal, Robin begins to mention things like Chrom is never like that, and begins to question his memories, as he keeps getting these weird visions. Over the course of the game, Robin begins to piece things together and begins to understand some important things, and realizes what will happen, and makes preparations to avoid it. Furthermore, Robin also tries hard to help Chrom out, wanting to remind him of the kind man that found Robin passed out on the field the day they met.
    I like how you have Lucina and Robin's relationship, in how Lucina actually confides in Robin quite a lot. This would actually in my opinion, make Robin/Lucina more canon. XP
    But it would make it incredibly painful for Lucina to go and try to kill Robin because she thinks of Robin as either a friend, a lover, or a mother. It's an incredibly painful choice.

    I absolutely adored this video, it even made me get a little teary-eyed at the end at how perfect the conclusion was. I agree with many of your suggested changes, and you helped opened my eyes to how deep the Awakening story can potentially be. The biggest legitimate problem with your changes, however, is how in-game Chrom would effect support Chrom. For example, if in-game Chrom is seen as bitter, angry, and vengeful at times, it would not fit in the continuity of the more casual support Chrom. I suppose this could also be changed by rewriting support Chrom to be darker, but I don't think that would be a risk IS is willing to take. Their protagonists always must be flawless.

    oh yeah Extra point since you sort of glossed over it, with Validar constantly Pressing into Robin's mind, fragments of Grima could poke through now and again, first in the form of oddly powerful (and perhaps helpful) bursts of strength to breif slips of control and the harming of another character, perhaps depending on how Robin decides to deal with these "grima attacks" could alter the flow of they story and Character supports, perhaps in a one substatial control Slips Robin deals a grevous yet non life-threating Blow to Lissa and Frederick, which of course upsets and startles Chrom who basically sends you off to calm down while the healers tend to his Sister and Knights injuries.
    then comes in Lucina's judgement and the reveal that it's Robin who kills Chrom, this sets Robin thinking, if they'd just hurt Lissa and frederick for no reason whats is stopping them from Killing Chrom? perhaps there is no way of preventing the control slips, perhaps Death would be a mercy at this point, end it before any real damge could be done, and Since Chrom is busy watching over Lissa and Frederick, now would be the perfect time.
    Instead of the 'perfectly timed' intervention, Chrom arrives just in time to see Lucina dive her sword into Robin's chest, instead of the whole heartwarming Huggy scene of Lucina and Chrom having feelings, Chrom Takes the Mortally wounded Robin into his arms and does a mad dash to the healers tent while Lucina slinks off to think over her actions and wonder if she made the right choice or not,it cuts back to Chom begging Robin not to die as they pass out.
    after a few moments of black screen it lights to Chrom sleeping in a chair by Robins bedside, Robin wakes him by saying his name and Chrom expresses how glad he is that Robin is awake and how worried they were then states that lissa said there was something 'Off' about you before you suddenly attacked them, you'd have never attacked her on purpose and they still trust and love them disptie whatevers eating at Robin from the inside and together they'll find a way to ease it if not cure it entirely, cue the feelings moment.

    I think the key to Gangrel is that his people need to mostly be on board with him. Notice in the Valm campaign that Chrom quickly wants to see what the common folk feel, and of course they help make you feel good by saying their living conditions are terrible.
    I think the key is that when investigating Plegia, you find that while the people agree that Gangrel is a tough and pitiless ruler, they feel that he's still doing a good job and that it's worth doing. They should feel hopeful for the day that their burdens are lifte when the Halidom is sacked and wealth, riches, and righted wrongs flood back into Plegia.
    That would really take the wind out of the player's sails where even the common folk can't stand you.

    you put forth some good ideas, especially the ones about fleshing out the actions and characters of the previous generation before the Shepherds and the 2000 years since the time of Math, as well as some of Lucina's changes backfiring and her having to cope with that. However, personally I feel if the game focused even harder on developing its already existing themes and tones, it would benefit the story more than inventing new ones to add in on top of them. Overcoming fate is badass enough of an idea in and of itself, why not lean into those ideas even more? Going all Dark! Chrom seems silly and counterproductive.
    Depending on players choices, we could even see characters like Lucina and Owain or Morgan have to struggle with the two opposing sides of their heritage if Robin or a Ylissean royal or even Tiki in Morgans case is their parent respectively, in addition to having the cast of characters themselves grapple with these ideas of tossing the fates assigned to them away and becoming friends with those who are meant to be their sworn enemies. The game as it stands alludes to these ideas vaguely, but imo it would only benefit from fully exploring them. I also fully agree with the idea of integrating the Valm conflict into the Plegian/Ylissean war, because I believe that it was implied that was how things happened in Lucina's original timeline anyway, it was sort of never ending war right up until the end.
    Another idea I've seen tossed around before that maintains the three arc structure is scrapping the Valm arc, having the first arc play mostly as normal with whatever changes one sees fit, but then having the second arc showcase only the second generations fight in the future. We play as them as they struggle to solve the mystery of who killed Chrom and fight to protect their home until they are eventually forced to abandon it and go to the past to change the outcome. Finally, the third arc would see both generations of Shepherds band together and face off against the grimleal together. That idea would be cool, but it probably would suffer from not having Lucina/Marth introduced as early in the plot as she should be.
    Honestly the criticisms about Awakenings story are 100% valid, but I feel like they have a tendency to be exaggerated. and yes I'm aware that I'm three years late to the discussion on this video lol, but I still think these points are worth making even all this time after the initial discussion. Great video though, cool ideas even if I think some aren't strictly necessary. You could write a pretty great fanfic with these concepts.

    Better to have a bland story, Awakening, than a legitmally bad story, Fates. I would have personally given The Grimleal a actual reason for worshipping Grima. Maybe they consider Grima to be both The Creator of and The Destroyer of the current age, and without any age's creator turning into its destroyer, they think that the world will entropy and die, with not even the souls of the dead surviving, but that all whom accepted this would be resurrected at the end of time. They would see Grima's defeat 1,000 years ago as a catastrophe that potentially doomed the world, therefore explaining why they want to resurrect him. This would be furtherly complicated after he is resurrected, when he, with seemingly no reason to lie, repeats these very doctrines and claims them to be true, leading to a decision at the end of the game to either join Grima for real or stay loyal to Naga. You then kill the dragon opposite your deity, and regardless of your choice, whether you just saved the world or doomed it would remain ambigous. And yes, that is partially inspired by Malefor from The Legend of Spyro, but I really don't think that in the least bit takes away from what a compelling narrative choice that would have been for Awakening.

    Something I came up with is that when Validar finds Robin during Emmeryn's attempted assassination he tells his soldiers to make sure to spare his life but capture him. Of course they fail but throughout the story when they run into Grimleal or Plegians during a battle the enemy is under orders not just to kill Chrom and seize the Fire Emblem, but to also capture Robin and bring him back to Validar, since he is the vessel required for Grima's return.

    I love almost everything that you've putting forward and would advocate a different tone in the story (it's a war after all) which changing/improving some areas. However, if there's one thing I want you to keep in mind, it's that all wars need a ray of hope for any country to keep going. Let's say that (to not spoil the video too much) Chrom does go off the deep end, Lucina starts to resent her actions being so narrowly focused on saving the timeline, and the Sheperds/other countries receive the domino of Chrom/Lucina's actions pulled by Valheat. Who's the one to assure them both along with everyone supporting Plegia that hope is not lost?
    Robin.
    Yes, he gets a fucktonne of screentime compared to the rest of the cast-in my honest opinion should, considering he is one of the main focal points of the story (Narrative 101)-but as Chrom's right hand man and the lead tactician of the Shepherds, he would be stunning as the one to ensure that every battle can be won, with the beginning drive to do so sparked by Emmeryn's death. After witnessing the Exalt's death and seeing Chrom so distraught in Chpt.10, Robin would make a personal vow to see that all battle can be won, and will make sure to always be with Chrom and the to ensure the Shepherd victory. This acts as a double edged sword, as Robin is always there for Chrom, Lucina, and the Sheherd's to cheer them on to victory, but could negatively make Robin so focused in battle strategies and victory that he believes that if he's not aiding the Shepherds in battle they are much more likely to lose, and times outside of battle makes him more becoming of an introvert because he studies too much, and affects major plot points throughout the entirety of the game.
    This all comes to a head when Grima steals Robin away from the Shepherds, and Robin loses hope that the group can't win without him, until the shouts of Chrom, Lucina, and everyone supporting him convince him that they can do it without Robin, and that nonetheless he will pray for their success. The final battle proceeds, and because you don't have Robin on the field, certain stats, weapons, movement, and abilities can't be seen-but the Shepherds push through because it's all they can do now. Halfway through the battle, the Shepherds push back Grima into a corner, but of course can't find a way to truly kill him, in which Grima summons risen to keep the Shepherds at bay. In a desparate attempt to trump the Shepherds, Grima attempts to take over Robin's body, and succeeds, and returns to the field, the Shepherds stunned at what they see. *Cue Id~Return* When things are starting to look grim, _Robin's Faith_ takes affect on the Shepherds, allowing them to see everything from their enemies again as if Robin was on their team. *Cue Id~Purpose* To Grima's distain, Robin's prayer towards the Shepherds victory was so strong, that it manifested into a blessing for the Shepherds. After brief thanks from Chrom and Lucina especially (with remarks from Naga being impressed), the second half of the final battle commences. (will be continued, typing on mobile, and fingers are tired).

    The Recap of BlazingKnight's Fire Emblem Awakening; in case anyone got the points mixed up (according to a layman in Fire Emblem fandom.):
    Chrom's father the previous Exalt starts a Religious Crusade against Plegia to eradicate the Cult of Grima but the conflict escalates into full blown war due to the lengths his father goes to, to eradicate the faith from the top down with little regard for anything that is rended asunder or destroyed upon his warpath for the greater good in his mind of stopping an ancient evil from reawakening and destroying all.
    The war scars the land; on the surface Yilesse and Plegia will be bitter enemies for all of time, and the cult of Grima reinvents itself through presenting them as the martyrs of the conflict alongside the many casualties and it grows exponentially from this tactic with many people now believing lies that Grima is paradoxically a "Benevolent Dark Dragon" or even more ridiculously a Divine Dragon itself that can save them! And his name is prevalent throughout the game.
    You, the Avatar (Robin) wake up to Chrom, Lissa, and Frederick, and you join the Shepards in trying to stop the war with Yilesse and Plegia as Chrom's tactician.
    The game has a world map and you can choose to fight minor skirmishes or other side missions or simply go to the main chapter Battle to make a gain on the war against Plegia and later on other nations.
    Part way through the first act Emmeryn is kidnapped by Plegia after she tries to attend a negotiation with Gangrel and he slates her to be executed at a later date as part of his ploy to prove a point that Chrom and by extension the nature of all men is war and vengeance.
    Chrom flies into a rage and takes over the war effort and he starts to resemble the negative images of his father in the eyes of the Plegians and the Cult of Grima his acts of cruelty escalate until he almost conquers nearly all of Plegia and is almost at the capital and then Walhart shows up wanting to conquer the entire continent on the advice of Excellen to obtain Grima's power to bolster his armies forces!
    Emmeryn sacrifices herself by using a great magic to bring a swift end to the battle breaking Chrom and forceing him to come to terms with his character flaws. He then reluctantly agrees to ally with Plegia against Walhart's Empire. And perhaps around this time Lucina and Robin (of course getting a manipulation from Validar) tells him to seek the Fire Emblem at last to combat this threat.
    Chrom goes to the Fire Emblem's location and at his request to take it to help bring an end to the war Tiki refuses him citeing his past actions of ignoreing the pleas of helpless peasants and his other crimes of war saying that he will only bring darkness to the land if he has it.
    Chrom looks deep inside of himself and maybe over the course of a chapter or maybe just a monologue and he makes another request for the Fire Emblem this time he acknowledges his wrongdoings in the Yilesse-Plegia War and that it is a weakness of his character but ultimately he fights for his people and others to know peace and he vows to bring this very peace to all people across the land regardless of nation or creed. This makes Tiki deem Chrom worthy of the Fire Emblem.
    For the rest of the game Chrom fights the war against Walhart more humanely while Gangrel learns nothing and drives himself down a path of destruction and hatred that leads to his downfall at the hands of the Cult of Grima as it starts to reveal its True colors a dark parallel to Chrom and what he would have become had Walhart not interfered with the Yilesse-Plegian War.
    The Shepards ultimately discover that the Cult of Grima was manipulating everything from behind the scenes profiting from war and chaos to drive people to their Religion based upon a lie that it would "save them" when ultimately it would have done quite the opposite as Lucina knows from her timeline.
    With Gangrel dead Chrom leads the armies of all the nations conquered by Walhart on one Final Holy Crusade not to achieve glory in doing what his father could not but to bring light back to the land for everyone like the line of all Exalts before him.
    And you know what happens to the Avatar at the game's True ending but lets have the revival optional (or a 100% completion Reward) this time.

    Awesome vid, Blazingknight. Your ideas are really nice. I'd do a mix of your ideas to have Plegia, Valm and Grima arcs, and the Dark Chrom route and Lucina's impact. Having the first part of the game to have the Shepherds under Chrom, with the death of Emmeryn and Frederick (explained later) having Chrom go berserk like you said. Chrom going berserk and Gangrel showing it to the Shepherds would make him lose the faith of his comrades for Lucina to take on the group and Chrom leading the rest of the army to fight against Plegia (Chrom totally losing to anger without Frederick to call him back to his senses). Then the 2nd half of the game would have Lucina and the Shepherds trying to break through the war waging between Plegia and Ylisse to stop Grima's ressurection behind the scenes. That would allow for a tour in the Thabes labyrinth (where the group would learn of Valm's using the war to invade Akaneia) as well as having missions fighting Plegian army and Ylisse's with Chrom as its Lord (this idea to make Lucina face Chrom comes from one Star Wars like pictures of the 2 Falchions). In a playable mission with Chrom we would be able to finish the war with the followers of Gangrel with a devastated Chrom, finally understanding the nonsense that is war. By that time, the Shepherds would fight the invaders of Valm. Valdar would start ressurecting Grima and Chrom would join in at the end to conclude the invasion arc and finally wrap up the Grima fight. Though, it has kind of a pacing problem I admit it. Maybe I should do routes like you did in the video ahah. Again, really nice video.

    I love this i totally agree it would make the plot and characters more dynamic and debatable. I would personally love to see a custom cut scene in this story of chroms wife screaming at him to stop (and maybe even leave the party for a chapter?) this could show just how far chrom has gone as the one who swore to stand by him has lost faith in his humanity. Plus each of his potential wife’s would take such different approaches! I also think this story would allow the player to see how chroms story has forced lissa to mature. We’re told by Lucina that lissa kept morale up in her future so why not show her to do so now? It would also allow her to calmly tell chrom that he needs to open his eyes and see the truth of emmeryns sacrifice. I think the woman he loves screaming for him to stop along with his little sister telling him the truth would really change him within this story line

    I like the changes to Gangrel's story but I think Chrom should not do the blood rage. Having him act like a psychopath all game then apologise at the end would make him less likeable as a character, it's not growth. But having his main conflict being him having to work and live with Gangrel, who is going on a blood rage, would be more interesting. He knows what Gangrel is wrong but since he needs his army to protect his kingdom he must turn a blind eye. Here's another idea, Gangrel could kill Validar as the story approaches it's end and after Walhart is dead, and awaken Grima himself, fully showing his complete descent into madness.

    I'm actually in the process of making a fanfic retelling of FE:A. Watching this for ideas, and will give my opinion below:
    1: I'm gonna keep Valm in its original place, but I'm gonna allow all parts of the story to last as long as I feel is needed to be fully fleshed out.
    2: I've been planning for awhile now to implement the history of Ylisse into the Plegia arc, and Plegian history into an arc exploring the 2-year timeskip between acts 1 and 2. Thus, Robin would know both sides of the story, and begin to formulate his own interpretation of what happened.
    3: As for the Ylissean conquest of Plegia, I'm gonna have that be after the end of the main story, as both Ylisse and Ferox would see Plegia as a permanent threat, resulting in the nearly-dead nation being split between the other two. Just for good measure, there will be a wall running from the inner sea on the northeast to the ocean coast on the southwest.
    4: I personally have a near-completed story for Grima, whom I attempted to make actually sympathetic(After all, there has to be an actual good reason his religion lasted 1000 years after its foundation). How? Well, change him from the "Kill Them All" pseudo-Satan he is in the OG, to a radical reformer(Thus sparking the fear/hatred of Grima in his enemies) who attempted to make absolutely everyone equal under the law(Thus allowing an actual following to form). The fact that no one really knows what the hell he is doesn't hurt the idea that the resulting wars were started by the followers of Naga who feared/hated this new "false god". Basically, my version of Grima is a warlike, anarchistic spin on Jesus.
    5: Yeah, I'm gonna try to emphasize Chrom's more chaotic nature. As such, he'd be far more difficult to pull away from the Midmire Battle, and he'd be far more prone to rush in blade drawn(a la Hector). Essentially, I'm gonna have Chrom's attitude stem from one of his lines in the Plegia arc: "We should put a sword in his gut and be done with it!" However, it will be more subtle, and last _far_ longer than the events of the game.
    6: Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be placing much emphasis on Lucina, as the story is being told through Robin's eyes. However, I'm going to bring in an element of suspicion from Lucina that will subtly die down over the course of the game, up until chapter 21, at which point, Robin himself would beg her to kill him. After finally getting to know her godfather for who he truly is(As opposed to when he was Grima), Lucy simply can't find the courage she originally had to kill him, instead collapsing into tears.
    7: I am most certainly gonna add in the supporting cast as more prominent in the story(ie. support conversations directly affect how they see each other/behave, love could more feasibly bloom on the battlefield, and[Flame shield up] Tharja just might lose her stalker nature in place of actually becoming a good friend to Robin).
