    So it’s a brand new year and I feel the best way to start it off is with a fire emblem video, in particular a video about Fates, because god knows I haven’t enough of those already. When it comes to Fates the story is an area that receives the most criticism and hate, and though while I think it isn’t as bad as everyone else makes it out to be, it is most certainly flawed and there are many areas for improvement, so much so that I have made my own guide, on how to improve fire emblem fates story.

    My biggest issue with Corrin is his lack of flaws. He's made out to be a perfect character. His support shows he's good at everything pretty much, except making tea. Robin was a workaholic and overthought things. His partner works with him in his flaws. Corrin on the other hand has phenomenally lackluster support convos with everyone. No one feels right.

      What? Corrin shows many flaws like being indecisive and naive.

    • @narutardkyuubi
      @narutardkyuubi 5 лет назад +94

      I think he meant ‘flaws’ that actually affect relations. No matter what you do, Corrin’s always treated as a pedestal. Xander will always think the best of him, Sakura and Elise will fangirl his every action, Ryoma apologizes even on Conquest, etc. Only Takumi gets pissed off at him (and gets brainwashed...).
      As he pointed out, if you were allowed to make choices, then there should be consequences to that. Your allies may not feel you’re trustworthy if you’re too naive, or if you’re too ruthless, whereas others might be drawn more for that same reason.

    Garon's backstory could've been something about him going mad over the fact that his wives died, he lost his stepdaughter (Azura) and whatever happened to his concubines. He lost not one, but two wives! Feeling that he had not enough power to protect his wives, he just decides to conquer Hoshido and more territory. (Another plothole! Where are Camilla, Leo and Elise's mums? Are they alive? Are they sick? Are they on a trip to the Bahamas).

      I believe that it was mentioned somewhere that Garon had a thing for one-night stands with concubines. Camilla was manipulated by her mother for status, which wasn't uncommon. Many were born and many were assassinated, all except for Camilla, Leo, and Elise. Beruka was set to assassinate Camilla, but she hired her on the spot.

    What I would have loved to see was a struggle between Corrin and their dragon, bestial side. I mean, there IS a solid chance that those power would backfire, dragonstone or not, and it would have been nice to see a struggle to contain that feral side. Heck, maybe even a third class change choice alongside Hoshido and Nohr noble which would put more of an emphasis on the whole dragon thingie, as well as maybe some Valla foreshadowing by this mean, would have been cool.

    • @christopherbravo1813
      @christopherbravo1813 6 лет назад +49

      it would be cool if in one chapter, Corrin threw out the dragonstone saying "you know what? screw it! all this thing does is limit my powers, and I don't need it!" and fully embraced his bestial side and went completely ham on whoever he was fighting.

    • @christopherbravo1813

      I just came up with a new idea: WHAT IF in the birthright chapter where you face off against Xander, Corrin, after initially getting his butt kicked, does what I just mentioned and ends turning the tables on his "brother". however, just as he is about to strike the finishing blow in dragon form, Elise, in an attempt to save her brother, jumps in, and Corrin's attack ends up killing her instead?
      that would make things interesting,
      plus possibly resulting in Xander going into a sort of rage mode once the actual chapter starts.

    • @Spiral-Mark
      @Spiral-Mark 5 лет назад +40

      That's exactly what I was thinking. People would have hate, feared, or be cautious around Corrin/Kamui dragon side rather than being loved by people. Corrin/Kamui would have conflict with themselves about being a half dragon. It would have made the story more compelling.

    • @SwordmaidenGwen

      @@christopherbravo1813 what if there was a chapter like that where Corrin was separated from the party in full dragon form and basically had berserk status permanently on him/her. The map clear is for azura to reach corrin and you haven to keep them alive while staying out of range from corrin.

    I felt like the Revelation was a waste of a campaign and I basically stopped playing halfway through the game, I believe that instead of having basically some third party being involved it should be about Corrin and Azura trying to bring Hoshido and Nohr together and stopping the war as that is the main conflict in the first place.

      If nothing else, I think it would be interesting to see just how much you can go in-depth without repeating yourself on the points that bother you... who knows, maybe a small glimmer of positivity will peek through the storm clouds of your discontent? ;-D
      But in all honesty, while I don't share your opinion on the matter I feel I'm growing to understand all the more why you think of Corrin the way you do. There are problems - quite a few problems - with the execution of their character, and it's tied in no small part to the overall narrative of "Fates"... For me I guess, the issues you take aren't as critical to my enjoyment (or lack thereof) concerning the protagonist, which led to our disagreement on the matter: what with the HUGE cast, I prefer the supporting characters to be the more complex than the hero (and both royal families have quite a bit of that, especially in Supports and such); perhaps I'm also just not as let down by execution, so long as I feel like the writers' hearts were in the right place - perhaps THAT is why I'm often so harsh on Camilla, because despite her complexities all the fanservice and the yandere-ness she gets over Corrin feels like their hearts were NOT in the right place (also, I guess, why I forgive Charlotte more despite being even more revealing - it felt like the writers DID have their hearts in the right place with her). I dunno... it feels more complicated than I intended, this point did.

    • @samaramelissa6156
      @samaramelissa6156 7 лет назад +5

      Why are you bothered by Charlotte and Camilla's clothes? It's not as if their entire character revolves around their sex appeal. And I think you're not bothered by Corrin because you're the kinda player the writers were thinking of when they wrote him/her; the type of person that wants to put themselves in place of the protagonist for their own fantasy. I can't think of any other reason why Corrin wouldn't bother you.
      Corrin in meant to be bland and uninteresting because he/she was written for the player to see himself as the protagonist as much as possible, Corrin is not meant to be a -character-, he/she is meant to BE the player, and because of that he/she can't have any strong characteristics that would make him an unique protag.
      I'm saying all this because I see no other reason for someone to want to prefer the supporting characters to be more interesting than the hero, since the hero is the one that's gonna appear more during the game.

    As somebody who does have a degree in English Literature, and is fond of writing things, I agree with... more-or-less everything you've said. I would probably take things further on a few points:
    I. Nohr and Hoshido DEFINITELY need to be shown to be more ambiguous - the clear-cut black-and-white portrayal really made things, as you've said, less-nuanced, and I would love to see Mikoto and Garon played as you've described. I also think Garon could use a bit of a character redesign, so he doesn't scream I'M OBVIOUSLY EVIL the first time you see him. I would also have loved to see more of his better side, and so on, possibly going as far as (1) having the conference in neutral Cyrkensia; (2) not having Sumeragi die at Garon's hands directly, but rather being killed by somebody with a grudge against Hoshidan isolationism while making it look as if Garon were connected, when he either wasn't or only marginally was; and (3) having Hoshido actually retaliate in a way that leaves a lingering sour taste in Nohr, such as capturing what fertile land they do have. It's implied their militaries are roughly equal, I think, and, as fertile lands would likely be nearer to Hoshido anyway, I don't think it's too big a stretch to imagine it would be pretty hard for Nohr to take it back.
    II. In addition to Azura not knowing everything, I don't think the Revelation route should have existed as a third possible path; having to choose is one of the most important parts of the game, and not choosing at all wrecks the impact. You also don't get to see Azura's dance scene, and, as you've noticed, the plot there doesn't have much impact. I was thinking it would be better as a sort of "Book 2" of Fates. You could have a certain timeskip happen, as in Genealogy of the Holy War. The impact of your previous decisions matter, and you can also begin recruiting child units (or replacement characters, if somebody died or didn't get paired up), possibly from both sides here. Depending on your actions, certain foreign royals would survive, while others would not, and you would also be able to recruit them, as well as survivors from the other side in limited numbers, again, depending on what you did during "Book 1". This new quest would focus on both sides coming together to fight a common enemy, while losing some of their enmity, though I imagine tensions would still remain, especially if you somehow kept all of Ryoma, Xander, Takumi, and Leo alive (though this would presumably not be easy). Your actions would presumably also influence the course the non-chosen side follows - for example, which royal becomes king or queen Hoshido or Nohr, with a very willing to listen Queen Elise differing a great deal from a resentful King Xander or a depressed Queen Camilla, a hawkish Queen Hinoka, a Xenophobic King Takumi, or a more moderate Queen Sakura.
    III. There were a few silly things in the story, like the Astral Plane, and the Deeprealms and other rather non-sequiturish worldbuilding elements I would personally have preferred to cut; I also think there needed to be less fanservice, and more practicality (especially in how Camilla dresses), and a greater emphasis on the magnitude of what's going on. There are some elements of gameplay that could be discussed, but those are probably better left for another time.

      As for Asura’s dance, they were probably trying to do something really “different” in the third run, so no dance scene.

    • @Saltyoven
      @Saltyoven 5 лет назад +12

      I'm fine with revelations, but not as a game itself. My idea would be to use some of the chapters in revelations as gaiden chapters for achieving certain things in birthright or conquest and completely removing the child system. Here are a few examples from a story setup
      birthright
      9x finish the chapter within 12 turns
      12x escape within 10 turns
      13x visit all houses
      15x have an A or S support with Kaze
      16x finish within 12 turns
      17x Do not spawn additional reinforcements from visiting houses.
      conquest
      8x visit at least 3 villages
      10x defeat Takumi
      12x defeat Ryoma
      16x Spare Shura and obtain at least 7500 gold
      17x keep Saizo alive
      21x escape within 10 turns
      each leads to a different revelation chapter and upon completing all of them, the final part of the game changes to the final act of revelations.
      This is only from a gameplay perspective, as It still needs to be fixed from a writing standpoint.

      I would like to see Avatar cry during the two armies meeting up and having a feast. In the game I would be very interested in seeing a more Bloodborne type of system where if the Avatar gets taken down by a hosidian royal or main character he gets either taken in casual or phoenix mode or stays dead in classic mode escilating the war and making Azura involve Leo and Xander on the plan of exposing King Garon and teaming up with Ryoma and the Hoshido royals to kill him.

    Have to shoot down that bit about Awakening having the weakest story. It is foreshadowed from the beginning that Robin is Grima's vessel. It wasn't forced as was claimed. It was simple and not overly complicated, Robin was supposed to be taken over by Grima and that caused the fall of Lucina's timeline. Awakening was a story about destiny not being written beforehand. I'm not saying it was a masterpiece but the ending felt satisfying based on what had been learned prior. Robin defies his/her fate to become the destroyer of the world and only is saved through the bonds the character formed with his friends. Awakening had a much higher importance on creating fleshed out and likeable characters than its overall story but I felt that the relationships forged with the other characters are what elevates Awakening's overall story from so-so to solid.

    • @GreyWandererXD
      @GreyWandererXD 5 лет назад +11

      Awakening story compared to Fates is an epic story. You know the final results, but how will this caste of characters avoid the inevitable results of fate itself. It comes at no surprise as you mentioned that Robin was the vessel for Grima from the very beginning; but you wouldn't know that was a previous timeline until Lucina is revealed in her entirety. As the player, you press forward within wars against the corrupt Plegian King that forces an execution of Exalt Emmeryn who would have been declared innocent of the charges by any one of the King's generals except Campari. But at least Plegia had reasoning behind attacking and being deceitful towards Ylisse considering the bad blood behind the nations and Plegia still suffering from the aftermath of that war. But then people bring up the Conqueror's part of the story, which people say is the weakest part. But I also believe that is understandable because it wasn't Ylisse's war, it was Ragna Ferox calling in a favor to defend their harbors from Valm. The motivations being hidden by the player (but clearly Walhart had Alm syndrome where he said screw the Gods, mankind can do whatever they want!) of this Conqueror is understandable considering the caste of characters did not have a leg to stand on within Walhart's reasoning or even what he was doing until Say'ri and various characters give context into why Walhart is "evil" in terms of how he ruled. At least compared to the Plegian King, Walhart is vastly more morally grey if you delve deeper into context. Then the rest of the game is based around stopping the resurrection of Grima in which the main caste of characters failed to do BUT Chrom does not die due to Lucina's confrontation in which she wanted to kill Robin because in her timeline they will lead to the demise of the world. Considering that Robin did say that he had nightmares of future events, he was indeed able to prepare beforehand with exceptional knowledge of what happened. The only real flaw I would consider is the stones that are inserted in the Fire Emblem which various other RUclipsrs have commented on. Even if you do not agree, at least Awakening had the avatar right with Robin being the obvious side protagonist and Chrom the main. Corrin being the main protagonist with every character except Shura bowing to his whim is ridiculous, even plot conveniences come out as half baked and based around Corrin still!

      (I know its a 3 month old comment but ehh fuck it)
      'Game story writing is often introduced very late into a development of a game.' -Extra credits on storytelling in videogames on YT. (really recommend watching it)
      A problem with fates that it tried to be based off a 'choice and decision making' mechanic. this means the writers had to make many different decisions, how other characters would respond to the decision, different events that may occur and they must all line up with the gameplay mechanics of the game. the problem with making those differences, is... time and money. Think about the similarities for birthright and conquest. 27 chapters, you vs the role model(s) Ryoma and Xander in this case, hans and iago die anyway, you vs king garon.. and the list goes on. Now about the time problem. this game was released for japan on june 25th 2015 and released to the west 2016. It can be suggested this game likely started production during late 2013 or mid 2014 because of awakenings success. Now the game mechanic was pretty much already there as they could just base it off awakenings and making minor adjustments to it. Now producers need to make characters because how can you tell a story without characters? and characters take a shit tonne of time to make and in addition, in game design the final product of a character is never anything similar compared to the first drafts. So we can assume that the writing team had many different and possibly better ways of telling the fates story but was limited mainly due to gameplay not working with the gameplay mechanic or limitations set by nintendo. I mean if one day someone leaks possible first story drafts or first sketches of early character development we'll see how different each character is.
      Then again bad story telling in video games is fairly common amongst video games mainly because the writing and narrative team are brought into the development cycle really late in, as game mechanics and possible restrictions from the publisher are already set.
      I feel as if fates was just rushed just to be a successor to awakening.

    I mean it's easy to say "oh just make Nohr not entirely villainous," but I think it would be more interesting if both sides had good and evil political powers at the top. Like if Yukimura did as much wrong as, like Hans or something, or Sumeragi was this giant asshat which caused the turmoil in the first place. Political intrigue would be really sweet in this kind of story, something like the Jugdral or Tellius games.
    And we would all be better off if Revelation didn't exist at all.

    • @samcase9328

      Ryan Keenan Don't say that. I thought Revelation was good, and had the best story overall, on top of having good map design. Hate me all you want, just stating an opinion, and yes, opinions ARE, in fact, a real thing.

    • @ryankeenan4425
      @ryankeenan4425 7 лет назад +5

      I could care less about the story in a Fire Emblem game. The one thing it should try to do is at least hold the player's interest, but Revelation doesn't do that very well at all.
      And Revelation's map design is objectively terrible. Do a bit of snow shoveling and come back to me with an argument for it.

    • @samcase9328
      @samcase9328 7 лет назад +1

      Ryan Keenan I disagree. Try saying that Revelations has bad map design after playing such great chapters as Voice of a God, Memories, Hear My Cry, Blades Drawn, Days Lost, Lost Peace, Veiled Kingdom, Arete Undone, and Going Forward. THEN maybe I can be swayed.

      In Birthright, after meeting Elise's nanny, who spoke of how King Garon used to be, I thought of Awakening. Emmeryn wanted to repair all the damage her father, who was basically as evil as Garon, did. I began to wonder: What if Garon was only acting in revenge? For all I knew then, Sumeragi and Mikoto could have been similar to Emmeryn, trying to atone for the sins of a ruler just as, or even more evil than, King Garon that came before them.

So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Intelligent Systems wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Nintendo knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. One of the biggest wasted potential in my opinion is Azura. Some of her supports and what I've read on the wiki page, Azura suffered from abuse during her time in Norh and was severely bullied by the Norhian children. As soon as she is kidnapped by Hoshidan Ninja's, she ends up being a political prisoner and is rejected by Hoshidans due to her supposed ties to Norh. This all leads to her becoming cold (not cold-hearted or heartless) and distant from others. This would've made her not only an interesting character, but also a real tragic one. Seeing this poor young lady suffer years of abuse and rejection, only to be distant from others that try to help her. This could help improve Corrin's character a little by having him try to converse with Azura, only to be unharshly dismissed by her, but as time goes on, Azura starts to hear him out as well as other members of the army. I really wish they did that because I still see glimmers of Azura becoming one of the best characters in the series. But sadly, people see her as an emotionless robot that serves as the mysterious guide to the main hero and nothing more.

      True that isn't always much growth, but what makes it worse is that there is barely any character there to begin with! I know Corrin is suppose to be a way to put ourselves in the story, but since the story focuses on him, its more glaring of his lack of character.

    I agree with most of your points here but when it comes to villians its possible to have a good villian who's evil for the sake of being evil. Take medusa from soul eater for example. These types of villians can work if done correctly. It really all boils down to how the character is established and portrayed. In the case of medusa, she was meticulous, cunning, coniving, cold hearted, and would go through anything to see her plan through. her actions portray this. She treated crona like shit, she manipulated stein, and she took over a child's body and used it as a hostage. All these things make medusa the most detestable scum on the planet and that's the whole point. We hate her and would love to see someone put that bitch in her place and that's what makes her a good villian.

    Lilith should have had some role. I would have kept Takumi and Ryoma's deaths rather than having Corrin succeed at changing them. Ryoma's last second choice to trust his sibling and self sacrifice to spare them from doing it was the only time a death meant something to me in the three games. Takumi's suicide and subsequent demonfication rather than changing his beliefs serves as a powerful contrast and an amazing final boss. i would like to suggest some things here that should have either been expanded upon, or altered to some degree that wasn't listed in this video:
    1. the Valla Curse - i would love to see this specific part of the story, that was a very specific plot point, integrated better into the story. like Gunther trying to tell everyone in Nohr about the mystery kingdom, and as a result being affected by the curse. or hows about that curse being exactly why Takumi ended up as the final boss in conquest. where in he ended up in Valla after a fight with him gone wrong and he is plagued by the curse when he does finally find a way to leave Valla. also, since Odin, Selena, and Laslow know of the curse, along with knowing who Lillith really is and specifically being sent there to help Corrin with said issue, they should be more then willing to join forces with Corrin in revelations right off the bat.
    2. Lilith was a bigger waste of potential - sure she could somewhat help in the castle battles, but that's really it. outside of the few scenes in the beginning that introduced her, the part where she saves Corrin from falling into the bottomless canyon, and sacrificing herself in conquest when she never appeared in the party beforehand; she hasn't had much development within the main story. the two big things that we know about her, and i say big because they should have been heavily emphasized in game, are that she is Anankos's daughter, making her part dragon, and that she is secretly Corrins real sister; both of which are super important points that are never played off or expanded upon, ever. i think they could definitely have remedied this by giving her a major part in revelations, since she obviously knows about Valla and the curse it bares along with who Anankos is. Since she is also Corrins sister, this would definitely be something he/she would love to know about and her part could truly influence Corrin's character throughout the story. also, she should have been playable, cause that could really help people get attached to her; making her life matter just as much as the others.
    3. Corrin being a manakete - can anyone really tell me when this very point is ever brought up outside of chapter 5? absolutely never. they could have made very interesting developments with Corrin's manakete power, being that said power is exclusive to Corrin and Kanna/Kano (name i made for the male version, AKA brother, of Kanna), there really should have been some exposition as to how said dragonic form impacts them and those around them. for example, how a rage filled dragonic main character attacking everything around them cause of a shit fit would either scare or anger the respective royal siblings, along with anyone else in the army. how inclined would they be to joining Corrin's side if they knew that exreame amounts of stress fueled aggression can cause Corrin to throw an catastrophic tantrum that they can't control? not exactly the best motivation for newcomers to the crew. plus, what if someone who knew how to cause some real problems for Corrin were to find out about said dragonic powers? i would think someone would probably want to abuse that power. basically, this part of Corrins character needs some real touch up. also, wouldn't it be cool if the prince/princess classes were able to be passed down to Kannas/Kanos other sibling as an exclusive option? along with the dragon stone not just being a power exclusive to the prince/princess/royal classes, but exclusive to the characters from Corrin's specific bloodline? that would be awesome, and make a bit more sense, in my opinion.
    4. The Ganglari - what do we know of this sword? outside of the fact that it's from Valla, absolutely nothing at all. it's a sword that just so happened to be found by Garon from Valla, though he never says it outright we can confirm it from revelations, and just so happened to be the plot device for queen Mikoto's death; essentially it was introduced, used for awhile, and then never spoken of again, which is a same cause i feel it could have been an amazing idea for a weapon if it was properly used in fates. hell, here's my idea. the Yato should not be obtainable in conquest, instead having the Ganglari as your main weapon during the conquest route. i feel as through Ganglari would fit better for conquest since unlike the Yato, which seems like a blade that would represent Hoshido's pristine, yet reserved, state and the code their honor, Ganglari definitely feels like a more accurate representation of Nohr; it's dark, seemingly cracked blade representing the harsh times Nohr is going through and the struggle to make it all work out in the end. hell, Ganglari can even go through a similar process of evolution as the Yato, though the visual change will see the blade becoming less and less cracked, representing the efforts of Corrin and the royal family of Nohr in trying to truly save and repair their broken kingdom. hell, in the final battle for Valla in revelations, Ganglari and the Yato could esentially combine into one truly magnificent blade all it's own, representing how both kingdoms, in the end, came together to despite their differences. that's how this blade could have truly shined.
    5. why do the female siblings have no special weapons like the brothers? - i feel like this one is something everyone has noticed, but it's something that's always bugged me. they could have very easily given them their own real personal weapons. unique staffs for Elise and Sakura, a deadly spear for Hinoka, and a truly powerful axe befitting of Camilla. These special weapons could also tie into the Yato/Ganglari's evolution along with the brothers weapons, which means that Elise, Camilla, Sakura and Hinoka should also have some truly major character development to tie them into the story even more so then before.
    6. a better way of introducing Child Units - remember heirs of fate? well, imagine that, but included within the base game and being a story that takes place after the "main" revelations path, and the hair colors of the childs parents actually do change their hair colors within those scenes. special weapons could have been passed down appropriately if applicable, with maybe a few more child possibilities for some characters. example, special child units for the royal sisters of each kingdom. also, the deep relm bull crap needs not happen, period.
    7. no need for my castle - no real need for explanation, there really isn't a need for this feature. your free to think about how this could be better used as a part of the story, but for me it doesn't really need to happen.
    and that's what i can think of so far. this game is still a pretty amazing game, but as you can see i still have my fair share of problems with how the time constrains fucked up the entire process. if done right all the changes that have been listed, both in the video and maybe within my own comment here, could very well make fates a much better game.
    also, don't know if he'll see this but incase he does; hi BLAZINGKNIGHT, love your content dude, and i really enjoyed this video. keep up the good work, and thanks for the inspiration.

    Unfortunately, those awesome ideas of Hoshido wouldn't pass, due to how patriotic Japan is. Only someone who has the balls to be open-minded of other cultures, like author of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (who made a protagonist that hates Japanese people, apparently), would probably be cool with it.
    Fates' story should've just been written by a bunch of Fire Emblem fans. Set some outlines, draft, talk. Hell, I'm 100% sure YOU could've made a better story, despite you saying that you aren't a writer or anything.

      Regarding Joseph Joestar, the protagonist that "hates Japanese people", you have to remember that that was in Part 3. Before the events of Stardust Crusaders, iirc, he went to have a baby with, ironically, a Japanese woman, which later gave birth to Josuke Joestar

      And to be fair, he grew up in WW2, which did foster a lot of dislike towards both sides (my own grandpa has claimed that even having Japanese-American friends/family at that time could get you some dirty looks). Even then, his heart doesn’t really seem to be into it; he’s just sad that his daughter is grown up and lives in a country far away from home.
      Regarding Japanese patriotism...maybe it was the other way around? Strip away the veneer of paint off Hoshido, and they don’t really have anything in common, geo-politically, with Japan. Nohr has more in common with Japan pre WW2.
      They’re countries that have been forced to a larger stage than they were prepared for, lack large resources to match their neighbors, and have taken to militaristic doctrine and culture-posturing to hide the feet of clay that they stand on. Even Garon’s weird harem antics seem much more like Japanese Emperors and Shoguns taking multiple wives and concubines and their descendants jockeying for power. Hoshido isn’t really characterized as much and just seems to have a Japanese skin slapped onto everything. Maybe Hoshido was supposed to be different, and the writer felt uncomfortable with ‘Proto-Nohr’ looking a lot like Imperial Japan and they decided to overcompensate. Well, this is just conjecture.

      Buck Wade (This comment is super old but) As patriotic and downright revisionists as Japanese can be, I don’t really buy the “But Japan would never portray Fantasy!Japan in a bad light”.
      Japan is a democracy people, which means that you’re going to find nationalistic people as you will find people ready to criticize their nation. There are already plenty of Japanese works of fiction that deals with Japan’s problems, I don’t see why this game couldn’t have done it. They could have made an interesting and unique nation, not based on an European culture FOR ONCE, but no they had to make Mary Sue Land.

    What I feel like happened with the Fates story is very similar to what happened to Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Rogue. With those games, they were working on both at the same time and those ended up being trash, both in gameplay and story. With Fates, they were working on 3 games, and it's a miracle they didn't end up glitchy. If they had stuck to just one game, they probably could've made a lot of changes that would make 1 story better than 3 meh to sub-par stories.

    You know after coming back to this after doing the 3 routes and experiencing Warriors, it dawned on me what else is missing: the lack of a Camilla/Azura support! She literally has a support with every other royal sibling EXCEPT Camilla! In Revelations, Camilla sides with Corrin the moment she realizes Azura is with them. How does Azura feel towards Camilla compared to the others? Why does Camilla care as much as she does for her step sister, Azura? What do they both think of Corrin together!? I agreed with a lot of points and suggestions you mentioned!
    Azura kinda bothered me, because she was so mysterious that I couldn't relate to her at all. It didn't help when I heard the developers refer to her as the pseudo-protagonist. Meh... she just wasn't interesting.
    One thing that REALLY bothered me was by the time I finished Conquest, only two of the gems on Corrin's blade was filled in. They were from Xander's and Leo's mythical weapons (Siegfried and Byrnhildr, I think) and I assume that case is the same in Birthright with Ryoma's Raijinto and Takumi's Fujin Yumi.
    ...What? Only two gems filled? You do realize that there are four Nohrian/Hoshidan royals, right? It's not even the eldest children who get the mythical weapons, it's the Princes! Honestly, I found that a bit unfair.
    I think everyone should have gotten a mythical weapon. Sure, Elise and Sakura would probably not be able to use them very well, but HEY ITS WAR DESPERATE MEASURES YO. It would make them more important to the plot of the story (a plus) and not make them so easy to defeat.
    And by the end, no matter the path, four crystals would be glowing on Yato and it would be very satisfying. Seeing two crystal slots unfilled like I did at the end of Conquest? Very unsatisfying. :(
    Also, in Conquest the gems glow purple. I assume they glow a different color in Birthright. If all the royal kids got a mythical weapon, then the best course of action in Revelations would be having each of the slots be split in the middle between the colors of Nohr and Hoshido, that way each of the family member (and not just the princes lol) are represented in Corrin's Yato.
    (Don't know how this would impact the sword's actual stats. This is mainly from a story perspective.)

  • @karabirb

    Honestly I know this is kinda drastic, but I would remove Revelations entirely. Not just because it’s a bad game, but because I think Valla’s role in the story is a bad concept. Why does the war have to be fueled by a shadowy evil boogieman from behind the scenes? Why do Garon and Taco Meat have to be possessed by some evil force when the game lays out genuine motives for them already? Having an entity like Valla in the equation robs the story of any genuine conflict and validates Corrin’s naivety. There shouldn’t be a “true villain” in a story like this. This is meant to be a story about choice and the following consequences, not killing the big evil dragon so your friends will stop being mean to each other.

    • @BLAZINGKNIGHT50

    For Chapter 5: Mother Corrin should have sat on the throne turned into a dragon destroying the top half of the castle and he tries to attack Mikoto but stops mid way because of the magical barrier Hoshido has then the sword Garon gave us would explode into pieces badly injuring Ryoma(or anyone) but Corrin blocks Mikoto from getting harmed which would lead to Nohr attacking Hoshido in order to get Corrin back. This would have been a perfect lead to making a choice between conquest, birthright, revelations, or smash.

    I like your ideas, but two things; I think it's a bit much having Garon flipping out and outright killing Sumeragi out of nowhere in the midst of a civil conversation. It might make more sense if, say, Garon was insistent on forming an alliance between Nohr and Hoshido, which annoyed Sumeragi who in turn spews some vitriol towards him and his people (not necessarily anything genuine, but just something in the heat of the moment). This causes him to fly into a rage and attack Sumeragi, inadvertently killing him. Despite Garon not truly having intended to kill Sumeragi and having only attacked in a moment of anger, this causes a breakdown of communication and Sumeragi's forces at the meeting attack Garon, and the forces Garon brought fight back; the meeting area turns into a battlefield, more or less, and on his way out of there Garon runs into Corrin. Not wanting to leave a kid in the middle of the battlefield, Garon takes Corrin with him back to Nohr, and there you go.

    Honestly, I have one personal idea in regards to the conquest path. What if azura freed Garon in the nohr path? Really think about it for a bit. Azura would tell corrin the full details about Garon being possessed and that her song could help set him free. Corrin could relay this information to their siblings who, while reluctant at first, do understand what corrin means. We'd have a fight with Garon at the opera house, and Azura could sing her song and set Garon free from anankos' control. Maybe because Garon was in such a state for so long, his perception of time was muddled while he was controlled, being genuinely confused in regards to the nohrian siblings age and Corrin themselves. Because Corrin broke Anankos' hold on Garon, he might seek to influence the hoshidan siblings since I imagine they'd still be sore from their birth sibling "abandoning them". Maybe Garon could be like "Screw this! No demon dragon's gonna take advantage of my sorrow! I'M gonna kick his ass!" He could have his on skills and character exclusive weapon and We'd have Relius clover as a goddamn party member!

    • @BLAZINGKNIGHT50

      That idea does sound pretty cool, and if Fates was rewritten in a way where there were small hints of Garon's former self trying to break through it would give further motivation for Azura to set him free.

Making the filthy westerners the obvious bad guys and the hoshidans the brave innocent residents of the perfect and beautiful land of hoshido. Like what the fuck......Ironically that made birthright the worst game out of the 3 as it was generic, predictable, had hte most boring and copy pasted characters, and introduced nothing new...meanwhile conquest was the best one as you were working with the bad guys for a change.

And even if Hoshido are the good guys, they still go off the deep end in regards to Conquest, with Mikoto's death annihilating any ideas of peace from the Hoshidans.

    This isn't really about the story, but a way to deal with the "To many retainers" problem people have with the game is have only one join and the other not for various reasons. Think the tutorial of Shadow Dragon where you have to sacrifice a unit to proceed. Have one of the retainers offer to sacrifice themselves so the rest of the army can survive and the other saying to choose them instead, because the other is more important (or whatever). They would also be willing to sacrifice themselves, as they care and are loyal to their lords and they would know that the royals' lives are more important than their own. For a non-death variant, you can have the retainer you didn't choose come back later in the game as a prepromoted unit to help save your army when you a being overwhelmed.

    This is my way to make the story better:
    1) **Make Corrin not the protagonist**
    The biggest problem I've had with Fates Story is the fact we got a bad protagonist. Corrin is literally one of the only Fire Emblem protagonist that I considered BAD because he is BLAND, doesn't develop, being a slave and can't even freaking SOLVE A DAMN PROBLEM!
    **Which character could be the protagonist?**
    Make Ryouma the protagonist for Birthright, Xander for Conquest and Azura for Revelations! Let Ryouma and Xander start with their base class instead of being PRE-PROMOTED! Have both of these brothers be in all chapters of their respective paths!
    The other characters in the game are far better than Corrin!
    2) **No senseless death**
    The 2nd problem I've had with Fates Story its the bad writing as they just killed a random character in a random way! In Birthright and Conquest, they killed Lilly for no reason and I laugh so freaking hard since this is so random. In Revelation, they killed Izama so fast in Chapter 10 and Scarlet in Chapter 18! It pissed me off when you recruited Scarlet in Chapter 16!
    **Ways to Improve these BULLSH*T DEATHS**
    **Birthright and Conquest**Have a Corrin and Lilly conversation during the story before she dies! She was underdeveloped! During the Chapter where she dies, let her and Corrin have a f**king conservation before she sacrifice herself!
    **Revelations:** Have Izama to warn Corrin about the sacrifice for the gods before he perform the ritual and dies! Corrin will try to stop him but was interrupted by Zola (Not disguising as Izana)! After the battle, its too late because Izana is already dead but has enough time to say "Dragons" before he leaves! THAT IS CALL GOOD WRITING!
    For Scarlet, let her die in future Chapters like after the battles on Chapter 22 or at the start of Chapter 23 before the battle!
    Let her have a lot of roles and character developments in the story before she dies such as her Interactions with Ryouma and Corrin! ANOTHER GOOD WRITING!
    In Summary: If you want to have a death in Fates, it must a DAMN GOOD one such as Elise death in Birthright!
    3) **HAVE A BETTER VILLAIN**
    King Garon AKA King of Wasted Potential, he has great potential to be one of the best FE Villains but literally wasted since he doesn't get enough development other than being a King who slave his Nations! lago as well, he could be literally be a playable character like King Grangrel and Aversa in Awakening because he is just there to serve the King! Why not make him understand the truth of King Garon and let him rebel against him! That is one epic writing! For Hans, give him a lot more development such as having a Nohr Unit who has his/her sibling killed by Hans! He/She will have a special dialogue when they fight him in the chapter which makes Hans a lot more interesting!
    You want good villain? Takumi is a good villain because he freaking develops in Conquest!

    But as for my thoughts, I really enjoyed the Shigure DLC and wished it was part of the main game. So I think marrying Azura off should be a requirement and the Shigure stuff would be in there. Like all your characters die at the end of Revelations and then Shigure becomes main character or you play through that alternate dimension. However at this point its sounding too much like Awakening. Also the Deeprealm stuff needs to be reworked. It wasn't written very well or could have been explored more. The way it is now, it feels like it was tacked on just so you could have children like in Awakening. Speaking of Awakening, it would have been cool to play the DLC with Selena, Laslow, and Odin as a sort of prologue so that we know how they got there since it actually does tie in nicely.

He just needed more...flavor as a character to make them a believable avatar.I think fates' story was alright albeit a bit of a head scratcher but it wouldve been alot better in my eyes if it at LEAST had corrin evolve more as a character. Who knows maybe fates might get a remake with all of the story improvement in mind in the future when the 3ds dies out.

    Now I really wish this was the plot. Also three things that really bothered me were Corrin being a dragon, for the first fifteen minutes everyone had a reasonably surprised reaction, but then it's here's a dragonstone have fun. (also another point to Azura being all knowing) Azura's necklace, what is it? Where did she obtain it from? How does it have these powers? Finally the game intro itself shows Corrin drowning Azura, but plays no role in the story. I mean I guess it can relate to when they first transformed and almost killed her. It just really bothered me they didn't expand on the whole 'hey, guys, I'm a bloody dragon'.

I picked up Conquest, because the cover looked cooler, loved it, got Birthright, felt that Conquest was just a bit better with characters, but I loved using the OP characters of Birthright to destroy my now exfriends in online battles that it pulled the experience through. Then, after taking a small Kingdom Hearts break, I played Revelations, and I'm still playing it today, because a few of my friends still have Fates, so I have to get 5 people to 99, because I want to be COMPLETELY FRIENDLESS! Your video was good and I agree with your opinions. However, I'd extend the royals and Corrin more in a certain area. Throughout when I was playing Fates, I rarely felt that Corrin (mainly) or his siblings cared about anyone except their friends, family, and allies in their army. When he is thinking about his decision to invade Hoshido, it was about how hard it was for him and his siblings. Corrin, being a kind hearted and caring person, I thought that he would consider the casualties on both sides, invading and destroying an innocent nation, the families that will be torn apart, and the consequences of the above. Along with his reasons for doing so extending to help his people besides exposing Garon as a fraud because some crystal ball from Azura told him so. Unless his caringness only extends to people who he knows but he did feel sorry about murdering a tribe of kitsune...
    Your explanation for Hans and Iago makes a lot of sense and would justify why they're there. Perhaps something else that could be done with them is having them as examples which would provide further world building. The social class system in Hoshido is concrete and hard to break which would provide a further explanation why most of the retainers are from royal families or have had a long history of loyalty to the Hoshidan family. Hans and Iago (and most of the Nohrian royal retainers) could be examples of those who managed to rise above their class because they had ambition, worked hard, good luck and talent allowed by Nohr's emphasize of merit over birth like Hoshido.
    The idea of Nohr spreading their laws to their conquered land is a great idea. They could also spread their value of meritocracy which most likely has made some improvement in conquered areas.
    Hopefully you'll enjoy Fire Emblem Heroes if you download it :). I'm not hyped up for the game (and Fire Emblem Warriors) itself but more that newer fans get more exposure to older Fire Emblem characters. Hopefully, they'll be motivated into wanting to try out the older games or support the remarks out of their interest for some of the characters.

      Boshwa The children in Fates are the very definition of a "Shoehorned Concept." Because they were popular and everyone loved them in Awakening, the devs knew that is was foolish to not include them. The way Fates was made does not support child units, it's just not their story hence why they had a DLC made for them just so they didn't seem like wasted characters. If you want a logical reason for children in Fates, they had to pull a Genealogy route and make a time skip. (Then again, Fates always seemed to have a FE 4 inspiration vibe from it) Perhaps after the main two routes of the game, after the war has been over for a set number of years and things finally seem to be normal, Anankos rises from Valla and starts to decimate the earth. It is then up to the children of the heros to pick up their parents' blades and finish the war they didn't finish. Sorry, but other then that, the children are merely gameplay elements, which sucks because they are amazing characters and a lovable feature. :(

    @aceofjacks7071 7 лет назад +1

    I'm a little new to Fire Emblem so I'm not 100% on my facts, but I do agree with you on a lot of these things.
    Elise was my favorite character because while she was so innocent and playful, she always had the haunting in the back of her mind that this wasn't a game of two neighbouring families playing in tree forts; this was war. I chose Birthright and what she said at her death scene broke my heart so much, that I understood what this game had as it's message. Elise was also well-developed in the fact that she was loyal to the one person she grew up with and actually took the time to bond with her that she was willing to let herself die for them to live and restore peace. (Well sorta peace...) She also tried to make an example to Xander and teach him that just because you may have strong troops, it doesn't mean you'll necessarily walk away without a scratch. In fact, a scar. Elise's death cut a deep scar on the hearts of the Nohrian royals, because they didn't realise what this war meant for them and what it could do to them until their family was ripped apart.
    Also the big sisters could have had amazing character development. Camilla had the potential not just to be the hotty in the back, but she could have been a protective, strong, yet caring figure to her loved ones. Camilla seemed to dote over Corrin so much, but this was put to waste as she wasn't really given much importance in the story. What Camilla could have been was she could have been so she felt like this young child of Hoshidan birth but lost her father wasn't just an extra ally, but a part of her family. If someone threatened to take your little brother or sister away from you forever and you could never see them again, you would want to protect them too, right? What Camilla could have had was she would try to protect Corrin from the truth in fear of losing them, and losing a sibling. A little like Elise's case, but maybe more on a 'I'm responsible for your life' level.
    Hinoka.
    When I first saw her, I thought she would be more of a tomboy who refuses to be seen as a prissy princess and devotes her life to training so she could prove herself to Ryoma and he would let her try rescue Corrin. I could have seen Hinoka as someone who doesn't want to see anybody else she loves get hurt, so she tries to save them by being a warrior. Ryoma could easily protect Sakura currently, and Hinoka would want to be the same. She already lost one sibling, and she doesn't want another one gone as well.
    And I agree with the darker Corrin thing. I mean, the whole point of the game is to choose who will live, who will die, and what will you spend your life fighting for. Basically what happened was you chose a game and you were choosing a deck of cards, the Light Deck and the Dark Deck. You were just choosing what soldiers you had. You should have been able to bend the plot around a bit more, like most JRPG. Say if you chose to kill the leader of the Wind Tribe in Birthright. Hayato could have developed a strong hate for you and Hoshido, and the consequence for your genocide was he ambushed you later with stronger troops. However if you spared the Wind Tribe, they'd be on your side and help you fight against Nohr.
    And those are my main thoughts. Again, I agree with you on a lot of those things. And those were some I wanted to add :)

    I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I legit loved Fates' story, especially Conquest's. I felt the latter was great for its examination and deconstruction of several revolution tropes, and the fact that Conquest went for a "good person in an evil empire" route than a plain evil route was extremely unique and interesting. Add in the amazing characters, my personal favorite lord ever (Corrin) and some great designs, and Conquest was easily one of my favorite stories in a while, despite its flaws.
    I do respect why people dislike it, but I never got why people say it's "unholy" bad. Maybe it's because people were expecting something else, I have no idea. I'm not saying it's perfect, but I certainly don't think it's bad in any sense of the word.
    Even if I disagreed with some stuff, I really liked this video. Good job, Knight!

    • @BLAZINGKNIGHT50
      @BLAZINGKNIGHT50  7 лет назад +3

      I agree I felt conquest had the best story out of the three by far. It was a unique and different perspective on war compared to most fire emblem stories. The were some really great moments in Conquest and it certainly had the better characters, plus it was where I felt Corrin was at his/her best, since it felt like Corrin was really developing, or at the very least you felt Corrin's struggle with the way Nohr did things.
      Was it flawed? Most certainly, let us not forget the end of chapter 15, but I commend conquest for trying something different, and I do think people have overblown how bad it is, I think it's due the main thing that hurt Fates as a whole... the hype. Lots of people were really excited for this game and the main reason was mainly because of the story premise (especially in the case of conquest being the first proper "dark" route for the series), and because the story is what it is, people probably felt REALLY let down, and if other games in big franchises are any evidence, disappointing can be FAR worse than straight up bad.
      Glad you enjoy the video dude.

  • @samcase9328
    @samcase9328 7 лет назад +5

    Here's how I myself would go about improving Fire Emblem Fates's story. Step 1: Give Corrin/Kamui different personalities depending on which side they choose, being more merciful and peace-seeking on Birthright, more violent and cold on Conquest, and having a bit of both on Revelation. Step 2: Have each path alter the opposite kingdom's royalty in some way. Not in the way Takumi was altered on Conquest, mind you, but still some form of mental and moral corruption. Like, make Elise act more cold and distant, like Leo, on Birthright instead of simply siding with Corrin first chance she gets, or have Sakura be slowly driven to violent insanity in Conquest. Just an idea. Step 3: Don't make Azura a walking plot exposition device. I share your sentiments on this one, sir Knight... Step 4: Show the light and dark sides of each ruler for each path. Again, sentiments are shared with you here. Step 5: More choices. I agree that you should have more choices. One on Conquest, for example, could be either pretending to kill Hinoka or killing her for real. If you pretend to kill her, the game proceeds as normal. If you REALLY kill her, your allies begin to doubt your motives and, as a result, perform either slightly worse or slightly better, depending on their trust. Also, Ryoma in Chapter 25 would be utterly unreasonable and Corrin would be FORCED to kill Ryoma of their own will so that he doesn't kill everyone in their army.
    Step 6: Give Mikoto more plot development. I feel that Revelation gave Mikoto SOME development, but not nearly enough. Again, I share your opinion on this one, sir Knight. And finally, Step 7: Have some of the deaths on other routes explained! Lilith's death in Conquest and Birthright, Scarlet and Izana's deaths in Revelation, as well as Elise's death on Birthright, sad though it was, could use some reasoning. Those are MY ideas for improvement on Fates's story. Agree? Disagree? Have your own ideas? Tell me in a response! And BlazingKnight? Tell me what you think of these ideas of mine via a direct response, please.

      Agree.

    • @samcase9328
      @samcase9328 3 года назад

      Here are some examples of the mental corruption I proposed for each route’s choice:
      In one chapter Birthright-which I have called Nohr’s Darkest Day-Elise is riding into battle on horseback, only mending the wounds of Nohr’s soldiers if she sees they’re about to die-a far cry from the gentle soul Corrin had come to know. Confronting Elise about this, he’s met with the rather cold response of, “I don’t talk to traitors. You’ll die like King Sumeragi did!”. This startles the Hoshidan siblings, especially Sakura, and even Takumi jumps a bit at a threat like this. Suspecting foul play, Azura remarks that something may be controlling her, though she doesn’t know what, and a battle against Elise ensues. Though forced to retreat, she swears that next time she sees Corrin, he’s a dead man, leaving Sakura wondering, “What happened to you to change you this much…?”.

    • @samcase9328
      @samcase9328 3 года назад

      And for a chapter of Conquest-which I’ve dubbed Wrath of the Light-The Hoshidan Royals have been becoming more violent as of late, on Queen Mikoto’s orders, oddly enough. This is Corrin concerned, and approaches Garon for potential advice-bearing in mind that this Garon is kinder than the Garon we’ve come to know and…tolerate. Garon suggests that perhaps one of the First Dragons is at work, which catches Azura’s attention. But there’s no time to discuss, as Laslow reports that the Hoshidan royals have begun slaughtering Nohr’s people in the streets, much to Corrin’s dismay. What plays out is a battle against all four Hoshidan royals, and their soldiers, with their weapons seeming a fair bit…darker in form than normal. Though they’re driven out of Nohr, there were civilian casualties, causing some of the survivors to jeer and mock the Nohrian siblings, causing Elise to cry and Leo to get angry. Corrin convinced them to ignore them and to let them grieve, and they report to Garon about their success. And while Garon is pleased by their efforts, he isn’t pleased with the overall outcome…leading Azura to ask herself, “How deep does this corruption go?”.

    • @samcase9328
      @samcase9328 2 года назад

      My idea goes along the lines of, “Choices have consequences, and what you consider right may not actually be the right choice”. Revelation has a chapter like this as well in my idea-dubbed “Silence of Dragons”, where Corrin and their group are advancing into Valla, when Azura begins to get a headache, like how Arete did earlier. Eventually, it grows too much and she collapses, but when she stands again…she is no longer the same. Now under the complete control of Anankos, Corrin and the others have to fight off Vallite soldiers, commanded by Azura. She’d have Dragonskin, Miracle, and other such skills, and she’d be a tough opponent-at least, I’d hope so. Anyway, after defeating Azura, she wakes up freed from Anankos’s control and having a hard time remembering what she tried to do-probably for the best.

    I hate that the Hoshidan royals aren't even related to Corrin, which is a major reason for even choosing Hoshido in the first place. You only find this out towards the end of Revelations or in Corrin's S supports with the royals, and even then, the characters reactions aren't appropriate. They made Corrin's family background over complicated just for more romance options (even though picking the any of the Hoshido royals as an S support partner is gross especially if you don't know the full story yet). To top it all off, Azura is Corrin's cousin and you only find this out at the end end of Revelations too. She is one of the most popular romance options for Corrin which makes this all so damn weird.
    Fates has great music, and it's pretty good in terms of gameplay too, but it was too ambitious. The branching story, while being its main gimmick and selling point is the worst part of the game by farz. I would much rather pick a coherent story with good characters, than three shit stories to buy separately with a cast of forgettable and unlikable characters
    Three Houses pulled off this gimmick a lot better, but a lot of that game's flaws stem from the developers stretching themselves too thin with trying to make four games in one. I hope the next FE abandons the branching story gimmick
