    The Fire Emblem series is made of hundred of different characters, some of which are better than others but they all serve their purpose of fighting the good fight. With that said there's a lot to consider when deploying any units, and when you take into account all the different elements that make up each game, it begs the question of what makes particular units good, and other bad?

    I've been playing FE games since the first one to come out internationally (7, Blazing Blade, just Fire Emblem back then) and I've played almost all of the ones to come out since then. At first everything is new and it doesn't matter as much how objectively good or bad a unit is. Then you become an elite and stats are everything. After that though, you realize what's really important:
    *Use and do whatever the fuck you want to and have fun.*

    I'll never understand why some people get so hostile or rude when someone likes a unit they don't. It seems like a silly thing to get angry over. That being said, I always use Lilina and Amelia on hard mode. I love using them.

    • @Sweaper

      Problem is calling a subpar unit good and ignoring what others have to say, no one likes dumb people that can't have a proper discussion, unless said person is a kid (can't really expect a child discussing with arguments).

    • @Sweaper
      @Sweaper 6 лет назад +5

      What, now you assume the age of people on the internet? Next you're going to be assuming their gender too. /s And yes, there are 6yo kids online, otherwise there wouldn't be youtube channels for this specific public. If they type or not that's another question.

      There's nothing wrong with enjoying certain units, I personally quite enjoy using Ross and Garcia even though they aren't necessary for beating Sacred Stones, it's just that some people seem to ignore perfectly valid arguments as to why someone might not use them.
      Pent/Erk vs. Nino, for example, involves availability and bases (Erk being similar to Nino, but earlier, and Pent being better than Nino at base, but earlier). Using Nino is fine, but her growths don't make up for the fact she only has a few chapters to catch up and that you already have good Mages/Sages. Even when fully grown, she usually kills the same enemies as Pent and has less bulk.

    I remember after Echoes came out someone on reddit put up a tier list of all of the characters. There, at the very bottom of the list, in a special tier dedicated entirely to him, was Forsyth. Meanwhile, my Forsyth turned out to be my best baron, outclassing Lucas at almost every turn.
    He really was a Forsyth to be reckoned with.

    • @d3-ll754
      @d3-ll754 6 лет назад +5

      Forsyth has better stats than Lukas all around. The only reason Lukas is considered better is because Lukas will probably already be a Knight by the time you get Forsyth. But if you 100% the game and do all of the Sidequests, you have no reason to not train up Forsyth and Python.

    • @arha13
      @arha13 6 лет назад +7

      Dread fighter Lukas is broken, but he's not a great baron in my experience.

  • @badcactus819
    @badcactus819 6 лет назад +85

    A unit cannot be taken out of the context of the game it is in.
    Units like Marcus, Pent and Harken are good because they have the stats needed to remain strong for most of or all of the game. Almost no FE7 enemies have capped stats, so saying they are bad because they fail to cap their stats makes no sense because theu do not need to do so.
    Now, if you plop those same units into another FE game where capped stats are more common, and they would be much less viable. Context is king!
    Edited for minor spelling errors

    • @geenobe9941
      @geenobe9941 6 лет назад +2

      Bad Cactus if we're on HHM then Harken due to his bases alone would probaly still preform pretty well in the other games.

  • @Kairnestar
    @Kairnestar 6 лет назад +25

    There are two big things I can think of that you missed, though they're related. Class sets for relcasses (in games like Awakening, Fates, and Marth remakes, and yes, I know you don't use the mechanic much, but a small thing like that can change a character's value immensely, such as Laslow's ninja access in Conquest or Berserker Vaike), and promotion paths. Like how Peri's value as Great Knight exceeds her value as a Paladin, partially due to the competition, but its stats are also more benficial to her

    Given your speach towards the end of the video, I think you would absolutely love New Mystery. FE12 has a HUGE roster full of units, many with different strengths and weaknesses. This combined with the return of FE9 support system makes multiple playthroughs with different units very entertaining. Sure, you can cheese the game with rediculous unit like Palla, but the game gives you so many options, its honestly funn just to mess around and do things like making Wrys into a powerful swordmaster for shits and giggles.

      My reason for why BR is bad isn't because of difficulty, it's the absolutely miserable RNG. I'm sorry but at the very least BR's hit RNG is worse than Binding Blade's. I had to reset nearly every chapter cause I lost a key unit when they should have survived (20-30% hit rates) and failed to hit anything when I attacked (80-90% hit to me feels a lot more like 40-50%) this must have happened to me at least 25 times

    Bonus EXP is not the same as grinding. There is a finite amount of bonus exp you can get in the Tellius games, and they are earned in creative ways, whereas grinding in the latter games and Sacred Stones is just that. You can grind for infinite exp, rendering the challenge.

    BlazingKnight, thank you so much for uploading this video. Because in a special fanfic story that me and my friend wanted to make, we thought about also righting about how they would be translated into the game, going with the branching promotions, stats, growths, skills, etc. And one of my worries was that I had was whether we would be making a unit too good or too bad, and that in the game, they would be benched or used a lot.
    Thanks to this video, I can say that I can actually discuss methods of making any unit work out so that everyone has a chance to be good or bad, so that personal experience with the RNG can be a case. I won't say that every unit will be the same, which will be what you mentioned, but they each have their uses that should be considered, so no one is said to be useless.
    So thank you again, and I look forward to more of your amazing videos.

    I think another thing to take into account that kinda goes into how it depends on the game is how applicable a job is when they join. For example, if a defence based unit is available only at a point in the game that most if not all the enemies are magic based, that trait would become worthless.

My favorite characters of all time are Lyn, Robin, and Cherche based on their design, personality, and combat animations. You can say that, but the most op unit I’ve used was Sety in fe4. I got Levin to just the right level so Sety would come with capped speed at base, so all the enemies were too scared to attack him

      Pent Reglay
      I've been going into a couple of older games. I should look into FE 4 see how good he is.
      Morgan was my pick because of how easy the game is making the game a breeze with properly a built unit. I just Married super crit Severa. Gave Morgan mire and Galeforce.

      Hunting1208 Let me put it this way.
      With Lewyn as his Dad, Sety's speed base becomes so high it breaks the game's stat caps and rolls back around into the sage's class base. And he's still completely an offensive monster.

      Yesh. He's so powerful the game can't contain him. I can see why he can be considered for this position then.

    Great video. Pretty much completely agree. Here's my opinion
    A base of quality is
    Bases
    Growths
    Class(Movement, Weapons etc.)
    Availability
    Competition
    Rquirements(i.e Resources)
    The game theyare in.
    Other(stuff like ranking or con.)
    Utility
    Now, let's lookat two characters, one I consider good, and one bad, to compare them to this standard.
    First, the good. Seth.
    Seth's bases are fantastic. He can easily carry himself very easily for a long time.
    Seth's growths ensure he doesn't fall behind pretty much at all. By the time he gets really outclassed by Franz, the game's over.
    Seth is a paladin,easily one of the best classes in the GBA games. His control of the weapon triangle means he's useful in most situations, and his move makes him perfect for various utility uses.
    Seth has perfect availability. If you ever need hi, he is available.
    Seth faces nearly no competition. The only people who can hope to match his movment early game is Franz and Vanessa, who won't outclass him until later.
    Seth requires literally no resources to be good. Any extra just means he'll pretty much never be outclassed
    SS being one of the easiest games in the series is a great advantage for Seth, because he'll rarely struggle with enemies.
    Seth doesn't have any con issues.
    As mentioned before Seth has utility thanks to his horse, such as canto, getting to places fast, or ferrying. He can also tank.
    Now, the bad, Nino.
    Nino's bases are subpar. She struggles this late in the game.
    Nino's growths are about her only saving grace. However, these are not extraordinary, as she won't have ridicoulous stats by the end of the game, only about what the others have.
    Nino is a mage, which isn't bad, but not that good at this point. She's a staff bot, but struggles to get a respectable staff rank.
    Nino's availibility is one of her biggest problems. She comes at a time when the group is fully established, and most players can't find space for her.
    Nino is in competition with Pent and Erk, and she is outclassed by both. Pent comes with ridicoulous bases and an A rank of staves, the former of which she will only ever get near the end of the game(and her stats aren't much better) and she will struggle to ever get A Rank staves. Erk, however, has availability, being your only anima mage until Priscilla promotes or you get Pent, this gives him time to grow and develop his staff rank.
    Nino requires babying, as seen in the fact that most claim she is good because you can baby her in Chapter 25x IIRC and she is often praised as a canditate for the Afa's Drops, and item you get earlier which is great for characters with shaky growth.
    Nino's use of 1-2 weapons is good in a game dominated by them.
    Nino's only real big purpose is use for EXP rank in a Ranked run. Also, her con makes her unable to even wield a fire tome without being slowed down, and without an energy ring, she only gains access to penalty less thunder after promotion, while Pent has no trouble using Elfires.
    Nino really has no utility.
    If I had to rank the parameters
    1.Bases
    2.Growths
    3.Class
    4.Availability
    5.Competition
    6.Utility
    7.Game
    8.Other
    Also, on the personal experience thing. Personal experience means nothing. Why?
    "This unit was good in my playthrough"
    "Sure, but they were bad on mine."
    Which of these statements is more correct/should be used as evidence?
    The answer is neither,.

    Some people might get mad but Normally I don't use Armored knights Or armored units cause In my case I like speed over Defense,armored knights are slow and can't double normally even with the availabilty of all the weapons on promotion I never really like them that's why I think swordmasters and assassins are the best units(especially in the GBA era) cause they are the best dodge tanks and kills every enemy even if they are not equipped with a slaying edge and especially with a slaying edge but on second lunatic playthroughs Armored knights become a mainstay though only the ones I get early on cause the enemies are so strong that only armored knights could tank physical hits, but until mid to late game they are just average cause every unit in my roster can hold their own now.

    • @MyCristiano1974

      Kellam at least has the option of reclassing, so he's not as bad as most other armor knights, though other units definitely make better use of a second seal.

      There are only so many units to use in an FE game so if you don't want to use knights or generals that's fine.
      Knights are tanks and can be pretty bad, but it pays off having a general later on.
      In fe 7 hhm I remember in chapter 24 that a silver sword hero did three damage to oswin . While the hero was double the damage oswin received was pretty low. All the remaining units near the hero were basically comitting suicide targeting him.

    I must say, this is probably my new favorite video of yours. It's very well made and I agree with basically all your points. I have a tendency to play based on characters personality the first time through, but then do a more objective run the second time through. I guess the best example is that I will often use all knights/generals the games throw at me because I just love their look and the first time I played FE7 I basically used Oswinn as a moving wall to bait every enemy which made me think Generals are awesome.
    At the same time in Fates I benched Charlotte, Peri, and brought her along but rarely used Beruka other than as the personal shuttle for whoever I married her to because I couldn't stand their personalities. I even was looking for a reason to bench Camilla but didnt because she was just tol useful and would show up in cutscenes anyway xp
    Looking back I know it's completely irrational, but I feel like it would kill the experience of the games if before even starting you plan out your entire team based on some shit you read online about the "best team" composition. A lot of time is spent giving the characters great personalities which other franchises struggle or just can't do. You only hurt yourself by not letting yourself experience the games blind. You can worry about growth rates and efficiency the second time through.
    That's just my two cents anyway. I've already gone way overboard on this and I worked to make this concise as possible. If you disagree with me feel free to tell me why or if you also refused to use good/decent units because of absolute shit personalities so I don't feel alone in that I basically bench every thot I got in Fates.

  • @MiniBlackWaltz
    @MiniBlackWaltz 6 лет назад +3

    Personally, growths and bases do mean something to me, but on the whole, what mostly decides whether or not I'll use a unit is whether or not I like them and how much I like them compared to other units. Take Lowen and Rebecca for example, I love both of them and I always use both, despite the fact that both have a reputation for being "bad" units (Rebecca more than Lowen, but I personally don't see it for either of them), yeah, I won't lie, their growths sometimes prove problematic (I mean, Lowen does have 30% in all his offensive growths after all, and Rebecca does have a pretty small 40% strength growth), but I love them both as characters and they're perfectly usable in combat, so by damn I'm gonna use them. I don't even care that there may be better alternatives, Pent is pretty fucking broken, but I still use Erk and Nino both over him, Severa can be a very broken Mercenary/Hero but I despise her and I love Gregor so I use him instead (in fact, I often kill off Severa on purpose), Klein may be serviceable to the end of the game with his stats but I prefer using Dorothy, I like Benny more than Effie, I don't use Ryoma, Takumi, Hinoka, or Camilla because I don't like them as characters, if Azura wasn't a damn good dancer I wouldn't use her either because I don't like her character either, if Cornflakes wasn't force deployed I would immediately bench them because I hate their character, I adore Lyn and Eirika and always use both, the list goes on and on. My personal experience no doubt somewhat blinds me to the flaws of these units (I say somewhat because I'm still completely aware that some of these guys are completely inferior to other units and are even considered bad on their own), but I find using units you like makes the game even more fun than it already is anyways, so...yeah
    Anyways, this is a pretty nice analysis on the subject of what makes a unit good or bad, good job dude
    On a side note, Bors is considered a bad unit? I knew Wolt was, he's hot garbage in character form, but I've always used Bors and he's always turned out amazing, heck, my current Bors has 11 speed at like level 15 unpromoted and has good stats everywhere else too besides resistance, I can pit him against axe units safely without an Axereaver equipped on him. Course this is just personal experience coming into play again, but still, I wasn't actually aware he was considered a bad unit

    This is a very well made and thought out video, but theres a minor nitpick I have that I think could be turned into a good discussion. You say having a varied team is the best, but I dont see why that is the case. Paladins, Pegasi, and Wyverns are all generally better than the unmounted units due to high movement, rescue strats, and weapon triangle control which makes them good in pretty much every situation. Unless the unmounted unit is significantly better than the mounted one statwise, I dont see any reason to take them over the mounted unit. Dont get me wrong I dont do all mounted teams every time I play since I do think a varied team is the most fun, but I dont think its the "most optimal" way.

While majority of the things they say I agree with, there are certainly details that I think is where the heated (but constructive!) discussions start to happen. I think for the most part people have come to agree who the high tier and low tier characters are, but the issue gets finnicky when we get into the mid tier characters.

    Thank you so much for saying what you said at 20:08. I have waited SO LONG for another Fire Emblem to think, "maybe I shouldn't judge units purely by how amazing they can be in my ultra hardcore Iron Man speedruns." I have been playing FE since I was 4. I've played every single game in the series at least twice, and guess what? When I played Fire Emblem 6 on Hard Mode, I used Sophia and Lilina. When I played Fire Emblem 7 on Hard Mode, I used Nino. It was the hardest thing I've ever done but extremely worthwhile and fun. The ONLY pre-promoted units that I have EVER used were Seth (FE8), Athos (FE7), and Galzus (FE5). For the love of god FE fanbase, stop playing this game as if it is some super competitive ultra hardcore RPG.
    Fire Emblem was originally made around one thing: the characters. Fire Emblem is still (except for some upsetting Waifu Sims) being made about the characters. The proper way to judge a FE unit is by looking at two things: their effect on the story (AKA their character/supports), and the amount of work a player is willing to put into them. In others words, a unit's value is different for everyone. All of the fun-hating "pros" out there will simply love the pre-promotes with good bases and some decent growth, but the rest of us-the fans of what FE is really about-we will cherish anyone, even if that means they appear on the last chapter of the game at level 1, have an E in their only weapon class, but have amazing growths in every stat and built in supports/significance to back up their role. I would be willing to put in work to have an excellent unit.

      Everyone has different play styles and to me playing efficient is the most fun and with characters like pent and Perceval , nobody has ever had a bad pent or Perceval so reliable units end up being my favorites . That being said play however you want but I'd recommend trying something different from time to time . Fire Emblem has many unique experiences to offer so try all of them !

For Christs sake my Sophia had def so high you would have thought she was an awakening dark Mage ( by the end she had 20 and I only gave her one dracoshield ) and I also got my Lilina to B rank staffs so she made good use of status staves in the last few maps .

And his array of weapons. Despite his low levels in some weapons (swords), RD has Discipline for both the Dawn Brigade and the Greil Mercenaries which works wonders for grinding weapon levels. One point you missed is the fact that early FE games (especially the Shozo Kaga games) had permadeath in mind. This impacts your other points because later units, including and especially when there is an abundance of similar class types, are there to replace dead units in order to fill a certain slot or niche in your team. That's why Shadow Dragon and FE12 have this trend where later recruitments were serviceable but not quite as good as earlier units (or just terrible like Vyland). Kind of like the game is punishing you further for being careless with your units (even if it was only some bad RNG like the dreaded 1% crit that doing them in).
    Granted, intent doesn't change the fact that even later, non-Gotoh units, can still kick arse.

    One thing that contributes to someone being a good or bad unit is reclass options.
    Since some units can be held back by their base class and after class changing become much more potent than before.
    For example, in shadow dragon you are able to reclass Jagen into a Dragon knight which allows Jagen to be not hinderd by terrain allowing him to reach places faster than before, and is able to use axes against the abundance of lance units in shadow dragon.
    While Paladin Jagen isn’t bad, Dragon knight Jagen is able to contribute a lot more than Paladin jagen.
    Another example would be Robin from awakening.
    Because Robin is able to reclass into almost any class in the game, players are able to reclass Robin to let him furfill a particulair job or mold him to your vision.
    Ryoma is also stupid when he reaches A+ with Silas and becomes a paladin.
    While the -4 spd might be offputting, the movement, balanced stat distrebution, growths and class skills make Ryoma from broken to just stupid.
    Elbow room gives Ryoma more damage when fighting on non terrain, Luna goes well with Ryoma’s skill and helps him one round enemies, defender is nice to have since you often want Ryoma to be paired up anyway because of his personal and the extra +1 with pair up is very nice.
    While reclassing is something that mostly applies to modern fire emblem games, i do feel like that reclassing is a big contribution to a units overall worth.

    6:31 You forgot that Lara, Leen, Layela, Sylvia and Feena can all fight (technically, Reyson, Rafiel and Leanne can in Radiant Dawn via use of Cards). Lara can't even dance at base (she has to promote into a Dancer), and Feena has a personal weapon in FE 3 (she can use the Rapier...for some reason. Even though she can't in the remake).

    • @airtempest8945
      @airtempest8945 6 лет назад

      Also, at 12:38, while I can understand why you'd want that, I'd just spam the units that are good, or meme with some units. For example, in FE 6, would I just bench Zealot for say...Dorothy if I don't have an archer? I'd prefer just using Zealot, or let's say that I have a trained Tate, but Shanna is a bit underleveled. Do I use Barth because he's a Knight and I don't have one? Probably not, unless I'm making a joke run. I'd train Shanna since she's a good unit. In FE 5, would I use Olwen over say, Fred 'cause I have another mounted unit, but not another Mage Knight? Probably not (Hell, if I'm LTC, she won't even be recruited, 'cause she costs the turn Fred costs, and like 3 more turns). I'd get Ilios later anyways if I skip out on her, who is just a better unit.

    • @airtempest8945
      @airtempest8945 6 лет назад

      17:11 Ayra and Jamke are some of the most annoying units in the game. Their recruitment is hell, and once they're recruited, the former gets a Brave Sword 2 chapters later, and the latter gives the Killer Bow over to Midir. If it weren't for those, I wouldn't even bother with them, since, while their combat is good, that's kinda implying they'll see combat, which, they barely will without use of Warp to warp them to nearer castles.

    In regards to your last section I think that the problems with rating units already arise from the terms "good" and "bad", rather it's efficiency. You can make anything work if you want to, but not using a Royal Laguz f.e in favor of a bad unit you've been feeding stat boosters to is way less efficient, and THAT maybe be considered worse than picking the superior option

    I feel there needs to be some caveats with these discussions. 1 is it a low turn count (LTC) playthrough? The reason I ask this is because way too often the most important aspects of a good unit under those circumstances (high mobility, can one round enemies from the start ect.) bleed over into other conversations. 2 bases vs growths should be a unit by unit discussion. While I agree that bases slightly outweigh growths, there are multiple perspectives to look at. If the bases last till endgame and it's only chapter 15, then the growths don't matter. If the growths are some of the best in the game and it's the prologue/chapter 1 the bases can be like Wolt or Bors and said unit should be serviceable.

  • @lilsunny7399

    one thing i find is personal experience can help when devising a strategy, sure it wont matter if a unit is objectively bad how much you train them. but (and this is comign from somone who has beaten Awakening, Conquest, Birthright AND Revelation on Lunatic) finding uses for each unit and overcoming difficult chapters with the right strategy can show you on a personal level which units performed best for you before you even think about judging them objectively.
    a fantastic example for me would be Hana. most people's reaction to her would be "Lol why the hell would you use another swordmaster in Ryoma Emblem" and they're not wrong, lobster lord is ridiculous but....Hana is objectively better given the investment. Ryoma's main advantage is Raijinto. Hana beats him everywhere else, higher strength, speed and resistance, comprable skill, and slightly lower luck. her HP leaves a bit to be desired but when you consider she can be fighting with a 0% retaliation hit chance while he's sitting around the 20% mark, and if he takes an unlucky pair of magic hits he's a goner.
    and yet without personal experience using her in Birthright, people would just go with the masses and assume Ryoma is objectively 100% superior.

    In my expirience with Birthright, I found Hana to be a good unit. Mostly thanks to her pair up bonus that gives you +5 speed on top of giving her a practice katana that also boosts speed by 5. I paired her up with a swordmaster Corrin, and it made Corrin on par with Ryoma.
    Hana also has high speed and skill and good res. So she's quite a good mage killer.

I remember doing FE6 Hard Nods the first time and Banana Man got RNG screwed. I was about to just suck it in and use Energy Rings to counter it in later chapters and someoe adviced me to try Lilina since from their experience Lilina may not double or hit much but her high mag still makes great work of Generals and Fliers and for healing. I must admit, I am glad I did, to this day I still use her in Hard Mode and her support bonus on Roy saved me a lot specially when he is rng screwed.

    About Meg
    Meg’s problem isn’t that her growths are bad for her class. Her problem is that her bases are straight up bad. Her growths would be fine on a unit like Haar, Ike, or more relevantly, Gatrie and Brom, but the problem is her bases are so bad that she has basically no redeeming qualities as a unit (bad move + bad bulk + bad power + bad potential). If she was a pegasus knight with the same bases, she would still be very bad, just with the possibility of being decent when trained, not because of her stats, but because Pegasus knight is a good class naturally.

    • @d3-ll754
      @d3-ll754 5 лет назад

      Meg's bulk and power aren't "bad", per se--they both stil end up pretty decent by the end. It's just that Gatrie trounces here in both shile still having great Speed like her. Though I'm still not using either because I don't like Generals. >_>

    • @DiogoJ1
      @DiogoJ1 5 лет назад

      Really? Her bases looked great to me, for a lv 3 Knight that is quite something. She has a poor start, but that's because she starts on a chapter where enemies are faster than normal, but outside of that, if she manages some levels, she becomes decent.

    • @d3-ll754
      @d3-ll754 5 лет назад

      That's just it--the amount of effort it takes to actually GET some levels makes her not worth it, honestly. Tormod from Radiant Dawn was a special case. I loved using him in the beginning, but when he left only to appear late in the game, It was just painful to use him because of how far behind he was in comparison to everyone else. T-T

    I don't know about other the games, but if I remember correctly in radiant dawn and path of radiance(i think) levels gained through bonus exp were limited to only 3 stat gains? I haven't played it in a long time. I just remember using it more on people who, to me at the time, had not so great growth or some maxed out stats (nearing end game of course) so I got guaranteed growth (I didn't look in to the growth rates and all that) and hoped for continuing luck on those that were doing well or didn't max out stats yet. It was particularly helpful on laguz units since they double stats when they transform. Shrug

    • @BLAZINGKNIGHT50
      @BLAZINGKNIGHT50  6 лет назад +1

      Bonus exp in path of radiance gave you random/traditional level ups if I remember correctly radiant dawn was always limited to three stats boost maximum, however they often increase the units highest growths, so if you gave bonus to say Nephenee, she would gain levels in Speed, Skill and either HP or RES (both are 45%), however if a unit capped one of their three highest growth stats then the extra level would go which ever growths was next in line, in this case luck.
