    EDITORS NOTES:
    Hey, it's Kevin again, thanks for reading the description! This video took forever to get done, life gets in the way, and a lot of the time I wasn't happy with it. But I got it done before 2019! And that's a goal in itself!
    Awakening is a great game, I love it. And I liked the real sides of me that I captured. The writing could've been a bit better, but I'm still happy with how it came out.
    Onto 2019, I hope you all have a safe and happy new years! 2019 will be an important year for me and maybe even BeyondPolygons! Thank you for all your continued support throughout the year!

      Smash 4 ruined it for me. And another certain masked knight from Radiant Dawn was also spoiled by a video title. That really stung since I was just a few chapters from figuring it out. At least Shadows of Valentia I got through spoiler free except the after game. Which is funny when it's a remake, but one hardly any played.

      @@-lord1754 Ghast Station, Mangs there are a couple others as well. Ghast hated Awakening so much that he refused to play it from bad word of mouth from a FE Veteran that was his friend. All he did was do a Wiki search to know the bases about the games story. As far as gameplay goes he really hated playing Awakening after Echoes and only played it because of its connection to Echoes (his favorite FE game in the franchise). The problem is that many people that make up the FE RUclips community are veterans that perfer the older games over the newer ones. There is nothing wrong with that but, when you began to only find flaws in modern games and look over the past games many flaws that's were biases and nostalgia gets in the way. This skewers any games reputation in the eyes of many veterans and new FE gamers to the franchise. Causing many people in the community to label each other based off of their favorite FE games which is very toxic to the community. It also annoys me how many FE RUclipsrs have not even tried to make a video addressing this issue.

    Awakening is my personal favourite in the series. I feel our role as a tactician in the game serves as an overseeing figure that truly brings out the charm of this game. Yes obviously as our job dictates, we control (and so justify) our armies movements and tactics but I think it's important to notice that our ability to build supports and relationships with the various characters and personalities from scratch due to our amensiac beginning allows players to really connect and love the characters as if they too are entering the world of Fire Emblem.
    We start to feel an even greater attachments to said characters and as a tactician, tasked to protect and guide them through battles without losing anyone.
    And yeh sure, the "power of bonds" inspiration scene during the final battle is something we have all seen before but awakening is one of the few games I could actually take such a cliche message to heart and truly cherish the bonds (and families) created throughout our playthroughs instead of being bound by inherant fate.
    I guess this is why i could really appreciate and play the game in this scope and is something I continually remind myself when I see complaints about the game I personally do not agree with. Awakening is an amazing game and fantastic entry point to the series.

    Was always pretty interested in the FE series, but couldn't find a FE game that really caught my eye that stood out enough to me to play. That was, until in Smash, I learned of Lucina and her backstory. I quite enjoyed reading about how she went back in time to stop a calamity that happened in her time, I thought it was extremely selfless and incredible. Then, in that same Smash game, I found out after playing him several times that I was really good with a character called "Robin", I never knew why there was a male and female version (honestly thought it was because of diversity at first). One day after playing Smash, I decided to read more about Lucina and felt a really big urge to play a FE game, googled which FE game Lucina was in only to find out that Robin was in the same game! Immediately got FE Awakening and played it, fell in love literally first cut scene, started playing a few days ago and have already played through the game 5+ times and now I want more.
    FE Awakening honestly set the bar for me, it's what I want in an FE game now, and will always be an FE fan from this point on. I'm mad that I waited so long to find this amazing series, but, happy that my first FE game was Awakening. 10/10 literally can't stop playing it.
    P.S Love Lucina and Robin even more now that I've played their game. Heart broke listening to Lucina's Japanese VA cry to her mother (Sumia for my first playthrough), saying that she missed her more than she'll ever know. Adore her character to death.

    Edit: For Ylisse, I did watch the whole thing.
    Few things I need to say:
    Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn sold much worse than Shadow Dragon,
    FE12- New Mystery actually is my favorite FE title. The difficulties are really enjoyable and difficult in unique ways (for instance, there's a mode called Reverse Lunatic, the only time we get a mode that does something other than inflate stats for difficulty), the art is improved from Shadow Dragon's, the music as usual is amazing, and it does a solid job of being an enjoyable FE game. And yes, there is an english patch for the game. Kris (the avatar in FE12) is really strong, as are all avatar characters, but the personality is.. meh. If someone says FE12 sucks, they're most likely calling Kris a bad and not well-written character, or they probably haven't played FE12. But either way, at least the rest of the cast is much better. However, when I say rest of the cast, I'm not referring to every single character in FE12, because of a natural drawback of having one of the *largest cast across all FE titles,* (78, excluding the free DLC roster, which covers a sidestory,) which is, not every character gets the same amount of spotlight.
    There's flaws, as with all FEs, but it's definitely one of my favorite FE titles.

    Awakening was good. The music is great, some characters are actually pretty well written, skills are better balanced than previous entries (especially FE4), the avatar, though certainly not perfect, is much better implemented than previous avatars and bland corn, references to previous games (weapons, locations) were implemented quite well and logically and it looked pretty good for an early 3DS game.
    There are a lot of problems though. Characters have very unrealistic personalities. Some characters in previous entries (especially in the GBA and the Tellius games) were a little more "unique," however they were always balanced out by more realistic, well written characters. FE8 to FE10 had odd characters like L'Arachel (dramatic), Devdan/Danved (...) and Haar (unrealistically lazy), but it was compensated by other characters. FE13's roster is sadly 95% "odd", with barely any compensation. Frederick is mostly fine, though he still has a weird pebble gimmick. Unfortunatly, while enjoyable, most characters act like they jumped right out of an anime (especially Owain and Tharja).
    Furthermore, reclassing plus skills plus pair up is way too broken. For example you can pair up two grinded units with galeforce, kill one enemy, head to another enemy, switch and kill that enemy and move again. Pair up by itself is already broken in FE13. Enemies never use it and Duel Strike is nearly guaranteed. That was one of those few things Fates actually did better.
    The story is also very, very weak. Grima was never explained (not until SoV that is), the villains are very poorly written (especially Gangrel and Walhart) and the avatars role is still way too large for such a "generic character."
    Last but certainly not least, the marriage-child mechanic was very poorly executed (though not nearly as poorly as Fates'). Child units easily replace all parent units (other than the avatar, Chrom and maybe Olivia). This causes people to simply ditch their units as soon as they have the right skills for inheritance. Although this isn't that good by itself, there's also the fact that none of the child units interact with the story, because you can decide when or whether you want to get them, which hurts the story even more. The reason why (in universe) they are even there in the first place is really BS too. Maybe, just maybe if it was just Lucina it could've worked, but it just didnt't. The part that stings the most is that FE4 simply did it better many years prior.
    Some minor nitpicks are:
    - Some character designs are simply awful, being either very ugly (mainly knights and generals) or very impractical. Just compare female character designs from the Tellius games to Awakening. The only slightly impractical Tellius design I can think of is Nephenee, who has her thighs exposed.
    - Every single character has to be at least attractive to some people. There's no character like Jagen, Wrys, Gonzales or FE6 Marcus, because of the marriage system. This simply hurts variety in character designs and personalities. (Fates did have some of these characters, but they were all "Corrinsexuals.")
    - Lunatic+. That's all.
    It is quite obvious that IS sacrificed many things to "lure in the casuals" as some would refer to it. Most of these things were simply done to make the game more casual, with the simple story, ships, waifus, over the top personalities and broken gameplay. Regardless of all my problems, the positives outweigh the negatives and I'm very glad it exists. It's nowhere near my favorite, though I don't blindly despise it like others. It's simply good: not bad, but not amazing either.
    Btw. FE12 was fantastic. Easily the most underrated title in the franchise.
    (Yes, this took a really long time to write)

If that's how the next new installment will be (which looks to be the case with what little we know so far at least maybe Awakeningwise with a mix of an old titles like Blazing Sword/Tellius games and improvement of Fates's ideas of course we don't know everything so we'll see) I'm content. The love and work that was put into this game can really be felt while playing it imo and it felt like a celebration of Fire Emblem with all of its references to previous Fire Emblem works and the fact that you can recruit (and interact though very limited) with previous Fire Emblem characters. The amount of detail put into this work is impressive, even if there are quite a few rough things (like gameplay balance and some of the story itself), but to me this game will always be special as it's not only the game that saved one of my favorite franchises but also a game that helped me with a personal time in my life and always brings a smile to my face.

    I agree, Awakening should be people's first FE game, it was mine and while I will not hold back on talking about how it is my least favourite game in the series (that I've played) I will always be happy I started with it. The main reason I don't like Awakening is the gameplay, more specifically the Pair-Up and Reclass mechanics both of which were improved by Fates, you mentioned Pair-Up but reclassify is even more broken, seriously there's a reason why Donnel always becomes people's best first generation unit, since he's basically forced to reclass, while his level may say 1 it's more just a reset and the levels are carried over, this can be abused so easily, one reclass on a unit and they'll become leagues better than any unit that hasn't been reclassed it's that bad.
    The story of Awakening is quite barebones in my opinion, when I compare it to any other games story, it's the second most disappointing, first being Fates as a whole, Awakenings story starts off strong but after Gangrel dies it takes a nosedive, Valm is boring, though I'll admit I do like on how it shows how strong Chrom and Robin's relationship is at that point and the Grima arc basically makes only three characters at that point matter being Chrom, Robin and Lucina, the Khans don't really do much, Validar and Aversa are killed off without much buildup and then the good guys win (simplified yes but compared to the start of the game it's such a disappointment).
    Character wise the game shines though, there's not a single character in Awakening that I now dislike, (albeit I wasn't too much of a fan of Severa and Gerome in my first play through), the writing is charming each character is unique and while some of them (cough Lucina cough) have been used so often by IS in Heroes and Warriors that it's made me like them less, I'll still say that Awakening has my third favourite overall cast behind Blazing Sword and Sacred Stones.

    • @shadedhydra6674
      @shadedhydra6674 5 лет назад +3

      Redemption V Gonna have to disagree, with Pair-Up the percentage chances didn't happen at all early game but then quickly got to be too good a few chapters in, if you say supported Sumia with Chrom by about B support there will be a 50% chance of Chrom getting in another (based of if it we him attacking so the damage would do so much) attack, Fates fixed this by making Supports only boost the stats of the other unit and instead added the gauge which wasn't broken, it was good because the player could only use it to avoid one attack until it had to be filled up again as well as if the units weren't paired up another attack could be initiated but would deal a lot less damage making being paired up not always the optimal strategy.
      I felt Reclasses were also fixed as instead of two class lines it was one instead, still giving units the opportunity and customisability to have an option of 4 classes for the end of the game and instead made pairings benefit units more and gave way more replay ability anyway, for example say you wanted to make Felicia a Sniper (not that you would) and so you can have options, either pair her up with Corrin (who gets to chose the reclass) or Takumi. Ironically giving the game more replay ability than Awakening as any unit can have any class instead of being stuck with three.

    I've played FE since Sacred Stones, and then played Blazing Sword. I never got to try Binding Blade at the time, but then I got Smash Brawl. I learned of Ike and was miffed that I had no way of getting Path of Radiance or Radiant Dawn.
    It was several long years before I would hear of Awakening. Once I saw it, I decided to try it. As someone who champions creating of customizing things in games, it was a must. Especially as I couldn't believe Mystery of the Emblem was locked to Japanese shores.
    I cleared Awakening and clicked in over 1000 hours on it. I just got so much out of Awakening. Then came Fates. I got the Conquest version because 1, I like Xander and Camilla. 2, I instantly became a fan of Nohr. 3, it looked interesting as you could be on the side of evil for the first time. Needless to say, storywise, I was let down a fair bit. But thanks to skipping scenes I can tolerate it. Revelation...well was Revelation.
    Echoes came and from the moment I saw it, I knew it was a must. For once, a game I couldn't access was made available. I recount that story more than I do for other games.
    Now with Three Houses...I can only hope they wisely choose to release in a similar way to Awakening's launch. Because that game seems like a return to form and seems deep. I hope for a big success for thay game.

    As self proclaimed elitist scum, I really like this video.
    I don't like Awakening, but I can appreciate it for what it did. It had ups and downs, you mentioned some stuff I agree with, pair-up trivialising the maps, Robin being beyond busted and grounds for best unit in the series, the maps being just... bad because they are so cramped, and the game overall being pretty easy, but also the stuff that it did kinda do well.
    I don't agree with everything tho, the Valm arc basically being a whole new story that didn't add a ton is something I'd debate with. I like Walhart, for example, he's got interesting ideals that Chrom legit doesn't debate, and instead of winning philosophically by defeating Walhart with his ideals, he wins on Walhart's terms, might making right. I'd argue that the fact that the game often shoves grinding at you and actively encourages juggernauting (using only 1 or 2 units to funnel EXP into them and be super over leveled for the whole game) especially on Lunatic and Lunatic+. I'd argue that Lunatic and Lunatic+ are some of the worst designed difficulties in the series, etc.
    But overall do think this is a great video, even if the title is far from what I'd call perfectly accurate. Yes Awakening brought new life to the series like never before, but it also only had to sell better than New Mystery for the series to not be terminated, and New Mystery only sold better than 1 other game in the series, Thracia 776, an SNES game made in 1999. To say that Awakening saved the series is not technically incorrect, but it wasn't exactly a Herculean task.
    You could argue that the series wouldn't have been legally dead, just, on hiatus, if Awakening sold decently but not insanely, which, sure, there is evidence for that, Mother and F-Zero for example, but I think that the idea of Fire Emblem sticking to its guns would've been fine.

    • @johnathanera5863
      @johnathanera5863 5 лет назад

      I disagree. Obviously fire emblem sticking to its guns wasnt working. I dont think thats up for any manner of debate, it needed to evolve if it was going to grow. And lo and behold, when it evolved it grew. I think awakening is one of the best things to happen to the series. It made it hugely popular all around the world, and the main titles for a bit may be somewhat unrecognizable from the old games, but once the series cements itself we may begin to see more remakes or remasters of the old games. Getting new fans into the old titles could move IS back towards conventional fire emblem game design. Who knows, but its a hell of a lot better than the franchise being shelved foe god knows how long

    • @lumina3257
      @lumina3257 5 лет назад

      @@johnathanera5863 ~~2 months too late but I'm down~~
      I think a large part of Awakening's success was it's initial goal of "Sell this game". Now, I should clarify that statement, because here's exactly what I'm saying.
      I'm saying that the development team realised this may be the last game, and decided to, in exchange for losing gameplay complexity, balance, main story writing, as well as some support writing, increase the game's marketability in an attempt to save the series that, clearly, the people on the team loved.
      You see, there was almost 0 marketing for the other Fire Emblem games, none. Seriously, there was 1 meme commercial for FE7 that most people know about, there was apparently a commercial for PoR that literally no one I've ever talked to has heard of, and like, some other marketing for the games prior to them arriving in the states, and that's about it.
      Yes, Smash exists, and yes, there are FE characters in Smash, and yes, people start playing FE because Smash but A: I hardly think that makes up for a full ad campaign, and B: Brawl and Melee sold waaaaaay less than Smash 4, (Melee selling just under half as many) which would've made the "Smash Effect" more prevalent for Awakening anyways.
      This, combined with the terrible release window of RD (it came out the same weekend AS MARIO GALAXY 1) and the focus for SD on only implementing like, 5 "major" new things compared to FE (those being forges, death gaidens, new difficulty modes, a prologue, and the weapon triangle), it's hardly a surprise that those games sold poorly.
      "Sticking to their guns" would have worked... if they had marketing to back it up.

    I loved the music, I think it might even be the best in the series. And I am also happy I got to play it spoiler free. The cutscenes are beyond impressive for the time and they really helped make the experience all that much better. I also felt the first arc of the story is really well done, while it gets convoluted later on I did appreciate the effort to properly explain why the children are there and why robin is a part of the story. The characters were also pretty well written.
    Side note: Woohoo! Another Canadian!!!

    Personally, I've always been a huge proponent of the map screen- it's why I count Sacred Stones as easily my favorite. Everyone plays differently, and for me, there's a huge joy in maxing out my characters and letting them achieve their potential, and I appreciate the games that give me the resources to do that. The best part with a map screen is that grinding is optional- as you said, it's great to be be able to have options to accommodate different playstyles and provide replayability.

    Awakening is an amazing game and this is coming from a guy who believes the Telius games are the best. I will defend this game forever. Awakening got me into FE which is now my favorite franchise and other RPGs in general. Before 2013 I only played Pokémon and that’s it

    I have a grudging respect for FE: Awakening. I absolutely loath most of the characters and the story. Yeah the gameplay is good, but Fire Emblem gameplay in general is always good so I can't exactly praise it for doing the bare minimum. There seems to be more of an overemphasis on stats over strategy, and most chapters devolve into either turtling up on superior forces, or shock-and-awe against inferior forces. Also character models have NO FUCKING FEET. But yeah it did save the franchise and kept it relevant today. Without it, there would be no Echoes (which is my favorite of the 3DS trio and one of my favorite games in the series period), there would be no Three Houses which looks amazing so far, and there would be no hopefully inevitable remakes of the older games that I feel really need modern re-interpretations just like Gaiden did (Jugdral, I'm looking at you).

      Shadows of Valentia was so awesome! It was so much better of a remake than 11 and 12 were. Also the creator of SoV said they wanted to remake FE 6 next. However they probably won't be able to due to SoV doing horrid sales wise compared to many other FE games due mostly to people hating it in Japan cuz it wasn't a 1 for 1 remake and internationally it was hated for being a game that was a mix of new and old in fire emblem so elitists for the newer games and older games despised it

    • @DarthWillSmith
      @DarthWillSmith 5 лет назад +6

      It's news to me that Japan hated Echoes. I hope they continue the remake subseries all the same. I need to see Jugdral rendered in modern fashion. I have heard that FE6 was next in line but I honestly dont think that game warrants a remake, at least not for another several years.

    • @blackbird7781
      @blackbird7781 5 лет назад +3

      @@DarthWillSmith i think a remake for 6 and 7 in style like Geneology of the Holy War would be good. Also apparently Jugdral won't get a remake unless they hugely change lots of the story and make certain marriage options not doable anymore. Otherwise it could get an M rating which Nintendo would not be happy with

      @@blackbird7781 If all they take out is the incest it wouldn't be such a huge loss. it was never really in the foreground to begin with. plus it's gross anyway.

    i love awakening - its probably my favorite game. I have so much nostalgia for it too. I remember waiting for smash 4 to come out, refreshing the Dojo every day to see new characters. Seeing the Lucina and Robin reveal trailer gave me literal goosebumps. I then got the awakening demo, I played the shit out of it - easily blowing through all the demo start limit counter. I eventually got the game and holy fuck it was amazing. Seeing awakening gameplay, hearing its music or seeing its characters makes me so happy as i remember the days of cozying up in bed at night and flipping back the 3ds screen to play it when I shouldve been asleep. I dont think any other game nails as many marks as Awakening does, and this is definitely from a place of ignorance as Im not too "into" the fire emblem franchise (outside of maining marth in smash lol) but I'd argue its the best of the series and its last good game.
    Then Fates came out. I was excited. More Awakening? Sign me up! I bought all three versions - originally I was going to buy the special edition but it was sold out. I ended up getting Conquest with the other three as DLC. I went for the Conquest route (mostly because Inigo was in it) and damn was it a slog. None of the characters were interesting in the slightest, worst of all was Corrin. Corrin is the reason I despise custom main characters. You sacrifice character design quality, writing and pretty much everything else and for what? To be in the story? But you have no control over how the main character acts, so whats the point? All that ends up happening is the main character becomes generic, unrelatable and unmemorable at best. Thats the case with Corrin, though I'm sure they are the worst example of a custom main character, but the same applies to the protagonist of Fallout 4 who is their own character that you superficially change the appearance and "choose" the dialogue for. Robin was perfect. They dont take up valuable screen time until the end where its earned and not forced (the Valm section forces the shepherds to strategise unlike the Plegia section which makes Robins transition into center focus in the Grimleal section a lot more reasonable and smooth). Robin being customisable makes sense, too. Hes the "avatar" for the player, yes, but hes also the literal avatar for Grima. You customising his stats and physical traits is *Grima making Robin the best vessel for himself*. After Fates came out, I felt burned. £70 down the drain. Thats the price of TWO 3ds games.
    Awakening will always hold a special place in my heart, and its real shame that its emulation is so poor with stutters during fights and so forth. I could go on about more things I enjoy about awakening: its UI, music, the support mechanic, the story and the child units but I'll save that for an essay one day. I only hope they remaster the game at some point - include all the DLC and add a few additional chapters into the mix to make it last just a little bit longer.

    Shadow Dragon was my very first Fire Emblem game. Not the best way to introduce the series,I'll admit. BUT it's arguably my favorite Fire Emblem game. I just how it has zero fcks given about new players. Perma death,Items are few and far in between and you have to rely on shops and conservation,not to mention tight money. First time I didn't know perma death was a thing and when I did I made my mission to recruit every single unit and keep them alive till the end of the game...and then immediately fail because Cain died in Minerva's chapter and saved over it. Funnily enough I never actually finished SD and went straight to New Mystery and I just love everything about New Mystery. Kris' character creation is the best because you can choose their background and it actually effects their growth. Not to mention that Luke gives you different nicknames depending on what face you choose. Little details like makes the game pretty cool on my scale. And Then Awakening came along...and I just couldn't play it. I don't know why but something about it driven me away from it. I want to give it a shot I really do but I just can't for some reason. Fates was a similar case except I kinda played Birthright and stopped halfway through because of how boring it was. I get Awakening saved the franchise and I'm really glad it did and if you like more power to you but I don't think I'll ever will.

    I've had so much fun with awakening and I'll still go back doing random playthroughs and drafts with friends I go back through my high school stuff and I was so excited for this game I wrote fire emblem awakening and it's release date all over my notes and I remember playing it all through highschool seeing the characters telling my friends about them and how cool they were the Lucina twist the Robin twist of course as time went by the cracks started to show and it lost favor in my eyes but it still probably sits in my top 5 FE games I've played being all NA released titles and 6

    FOR ALYSSE! Probably spelled that wrong, but W/E :)
    I'll forever love Awakening because, while I do like Echoes more, it's what introduced me to Fire Emblem. A friend attempted to get me into the GBA games years after the fact, but I couldn't motivate myself to play through them somehow. I have done so now however, and that's because of Awakening; it's presentation, romance mechanics, gameplay, music and everything is just so goshdarn enjoyable that, even as someone who doesn't usually play strategy titles, I couldn't help but fall in love. Now there are only two localized titles I have yet to play, and my getting that far owes itself entirely thanks to Awakening; I wouldn't have wanted to do nearly that much if I'd started with, say, Fates.
